Blog Post 15: Open Topic
For the last entry of this blog, I had to play a game related to the architecture I have chosen for my research artifact summative.  As with previous blog posts, I have chosen to focus on brutalist architecture, however, since I have already  played through and reviewed Wolfenstein: The New Order, I have decided to play through a different game that utilizes brutalist architecture.
The game I chose is Kairo developed by Limasse Five.  Kairo is a puzzle/maze game that provides the player with very little instructions, instead, it makes the player work out the solution themselves, making this game very different than Wolfenstein: The New Order.
I have previously written about this game focusing on the abstract nature of the environment, however, this time I have decided to speak about the unique way it uses brutalist architecture.  This game still uses brutalist architecture within many levels, however, unlike many other games, it does not appear to be intimidating or scary.
I believe that this could be due to the lighting effects and style of game.  For example, the game is not based in a dystopian world and the lighting is often warmer, as the image below portrays

The level designs in this game are very minimalistic, yet still provide the player with a lot of visual and gameplay variety by simply rearranging structures, colours and lighting as the images below show

In my opinion, although these levels and structures used, look awe inspiring, they do not look intimidating, which I feel shows that brutalist architecture does not always have to be associated with negativity.

Herkese merhaba. NaissanceE an itibariyle ücretsiz olarak indirilebilir hale geldi. Normalde planımız oyunu çıkışını takip eden birkaç yıl içinde bedava haline getirmekti. Şimdi bunun vakti geldi. Oyunu oynayan ve bundan keyif alan herkese teşekkürler.
Stanley Parable’ı oynayanlar NaissanceE’i bu oyuna benzeteceklerdir.
Evet, oyun an itibariyle Steam’den hiçbir şekilde para ödemeden temin edilebilir durumda. Siz de https://steamcommunity.com/app/265690 adresini takip ederek oyunu kütüphanenizdeki yapımların arasına dahil edebilirsiniz.

NaissanceE takes visual cues not only from other games (Portal comes to mind, but also Antichamber), but also from film (Kubricks 2001, Syd Mead) and graphic artists like Piranesi and MC Escher. Am I correct? Do you see other visual arts and artists as inspiration for your game's visual design? If so, which in particular?
Correct indeed. Others big influences are Blame! by Tsutomu Nihei,  Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural work, Anouk de Clerck’s "Buildings" or the House of Leaves book by Mark Z. Danielewski. This last one I discovered it during the game production by reading comments on a news about NaissanceE !
You can find many sources of inspiration, references and artistic creations in the same wave as NaissanceE on the twitter series I posted : #ProximaNE

Lucy is Lost
That is all resembling a plot one gets from NaissanceE, indie game created by Limasse Five. Feeling like the orphaned child of Myst and Antichamber, it is a first-person surrealist exploratory game in which one wanders strange futuristic architectures and plays with the interaction between light and darkness. Beautifully constructed, though one would do well to remember that this is a low-budget game, which does show with its occasional roughness.
A gorgeous and mind-bending exploration of loneliness and the self, it is absolutely worth getting.
NaissanceE is available on Steam.
