my favorite thing is when Sonic artists get creative and consider the characters’ abilities/personalities when drawing them in action
my personal favorite example is Tangle the Lemur and her fabulous tail
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she ziplines down grind rails, she’s probably fast enough to spin dash regularly but she instead uses her tails to create her own “spiral dash”(this is what i’m calling it)
just one of the many reasons why I think Tangle is such a fun character, her excitable and thrill-seeking attitude mixed with her powerful, stretchy tail makes for some creative and entertaining visuals

The One That Got Away
“Summary: Shadow finds himself comforting his arch-rival after witnessing the messy break-up with the Princess.
(Takes Place after issue 134, aka the Infamous Slap.)
Characters: Sonic the Hedgehog, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sally Acorn (mentioned).
Pairings: Sonadow (Pre-relationship), Sonally (Past.)
A/N: Here’s the next Archie! Sonadow AU fanfic. Sorry for the terrible wait. Hope u all enjoy reading this!
Shadow skidded to a stop as he surveyed the green vegetation area of Knothole forest, looking for a certain blue hedgehog who ran off in a fit of distress. He did not understand why he wanted to look for the blue hedgehog who is also his arch-rival, but his instincts were telling him to and being the Ultimate Lifeform, he knew his instincts were never wrong.
When the black hedgehog learnt, that Sonic has somehow came back from the dead; or more accurately…came back to Mobius from being lost in space for a year, Shadow has been feeling a strange emotion just like what he felt during that same year. Ever since the day Sonic “died”, he’s been feeling a very strange emotion in his chest which was vastly different, than the warm magnetic pull he felt when the two of them saw each other face to face. It was cold, empty and painful that constantly gnawed at him, much to his own irritation while he kept continuing his ongoing mission of discovering his true purpose in life.
But now that he learned Sonic is alive, that terrible feeling of pain and emptiness had been replaced with the warm magnetic pull he felt before. Which was why earlier that night, he found himself hiding away from everyone’s view in the trees as he watched what had literally played on stage, like a messed-up tragic soap opera that he used to watch with Maria during his time on the ARK.
After going deeper into the forest, he finally found a familiar shade of azure blue in a small clearing, sitting near the lake in a fetal position, his head resting in his arms.
In any different kind of scenario, the black hedgehog would’ve found this scene of his arch-rival wallowing in sadness, rather pathetic. But because of what happened earlier tonight, this was understandable; since it seemed like both him and the princess loved each other very much. Shadow also didn’t understand why he feels that same empty feeling when he thinks of his rival’s now former relationship with the princess at times.
The black hedgehog begins quietly walking closer before he stopped at the blue hedgehog’s side, who either did not noticed his presence or became too emotionally drained to even respond to any kind of sound or movement.
“Faker?” Shadow spoke, seeing if this might initiate a response in his rival.
Sonic jumped from his spot, being rather startled by the voice. He quickly turned his head around to the side, to see his black and red rival standing over him with an unreadable expression. The blue hedgehog made quick work of wiping any eyes left on his face and eyes before plastering on a small fake smile, “H-Hey Shadow, what’cha doing all the way out here near Knothole?”
Like when he was looking for the blue hedgehog, Shadow allowed himself a moment to observe the blue hedgehog. His green eyes that were once filled with life, were now nearly dead and lifeless with a slight red tint and swollen due to crying. Bags also started forming under his eyes and his quills were slightly drooping, along with his ears.
The black hedgehog took a seat next to his rival, much to the latter’s surprise; as he started trying to think on what he should say to him, without showing that he cares for his rival after witnessing what happened over several minutes ago.
“You should be with your friends, blue hedgehog. Not out here alone.” Shadow said, before mentally kicking himself, what the hell was that?
Hearing what his rival just said, Sonic immediately groans as realisation kicked in, hiding his face again.
‘Can this get any worse for me?’ he thought.
He slightly lifted his head, “Did you see all that, Shadow?”
The said hedgehog looked at the blue blur before letting out a sigh, “Yes, indeed I have Faker. I only came out here because I…because I.” he immediately looked away, knowing his attempt at trying not look like he cares, is starting fail.
Oh, fuck.
Sonic blinked for a few moments looking surprised, before he was able to recover some of that cockiness back to make a remark at his rival, “Aww! I didn’t know you cared about me, Faker. It almost makes me see you in a whole different light.”
Shadow only gave a glare his rival, little annoyed that the blue blur was able to figure out his intentions that easily. This only made Sonic chuckle in return as he begins to feel slightly better from the events, that possibly took place nearly an hour ago. It did not last exceptionally long however, as the thought of it made the hedgehog feel sombre again.
Noticing that his rival had become depressed again, Shadow decided to speak up again, while also deciding to give up trying to hide his care for his rival’s well-being. At least for just one night.
“Everything alright, hedgehog?” he asked, despite already knowing what.
The blue hedgehog looked at his rival for a short moment before answering, “Aw, it nothing Shadow. Just thinking about…Sally and everything.” He then lets out a sigh, perking the black hedgehog’s ears a little.
Shadow found himself falling deep into his thoughts as he began to remember…
Sonic’s face became one of sadness, as he gently brushed the princess’s hand away from his cheek.
“Sorry, Sal. I…can’t.”
A loud slap resounded throughout the area, as everyone watched in shock or even gasped loudly. Shadow who was watching everything from the cover of the tress, even looked slightly shocked as he watched what just happened. He felt an extremely dark feeling form in his chest as he watched the princess slapped the blue hedgehog across his face, hard.
“I SHOULD’VE KNOWN YOU’D BE SELFISH!”
As the blue hedgehog held his throbbing cheek, his expression turned to one of great shock, to seething anger. “Selfish…? Selfish?!?”
He then screamed at the top of his lungs in a tone filled with utter outrage and anger, that the black hedgehog has never heard him use before: “I SACRIFICED MY LIFE TO SAVE THE PLANET, ENDED UP ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE UNIVERSE BECAUSE OF IT, DID EVERYTHING I COULD TO GET BACK ONLY TO FIND OUT I LOST A WHOLE YEAR OF MY LIFE AND NOW I WANNA JUST END THIS STUPID WAR! HOW IS THAT SELFISH?!”
The princess already started having tears coming down here, “Do you know what it was like believing you were dead? It completely broke my heart! Watching Mecha hurt you, brought it all back and I refuse to have my heart broken again, Sonic.”
While the black hedgehog was able to understand her reason for calling Faker selfish, he was also fairly sure that she wasn’t the only selfish person here.
“WHAT’S MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU, ANYWAY?! PUNCHING OUT ROBOTNIK’S LIGHTS, OR BEING WITH ME?”
A huge heavy silence fell over everyone as the two started to face off against one another. Like the blue hedgehog’s lover, or ex-lover as it seems right now; Sonic also started to have tears running down his muzzle. Shadow’s expression had changed back to his regular cold expression, but his eyes were slightly wider than normal, as he continued to watch the scene.
Taking her ex-consort’s silence as a no, the princess ran off the stage leaving a devastated Sonic.
“THEN HE CAN HAVE YOU,  ALL TO HIMSELF!”
In a matter of seconds, the two tailed fox and the pink hedgehog came rushing to the edge of the stage, asking their friend if he was alright, snapping him out of the depressed trance. The moment the blue hedgehog had noticed that everyone had all been watching, his eyes widen as he began to hyperventilate and started shaking like he was going into shock, before he dashed off into the forest without a single word, ignoring the cries of his friends to come back.
Straight after the devastated hedgehog fled into the forest, Shadow found himself up on his feet and immediately heading for the distressed hedgehog. He didn’t understand why he wanted to, but his instincts were screaming at him to go after him; as well as that magnetic feeling that seemed to be getting stronger. The only thing he knew, is that he must find his rival…
The black hedgehog fell back to Mobius, his flashback of earlier tonight now fading away. After blinking a few times to help clear his vision, Shadow turned his head back to the blue hedgehog. His expression was still quite depressed from remembering what happened, along with his green eyes that are now slightly flickering with light, but not a lot to look completely alive. And unlike earlier when his rival was speaking to him, he kept his head down at a low angle keeping his stare on the ground with a look of sadness.
Shadow briefly wondered what he should do. Should he tell his rival what he thinks he should do next now that he and the princess are no longer together? Or should he just leave and ignore the small voice, telling him to do the contrary? After considering his two options; the Ultimate Lifeform took in a deep breath. Well, he got himself into this and he should finish it.
Letting out a huge sigh, Shadow started speaking.
“Listen Hedgehog, I’ve never been in a relationship like your former on with the princess, nor do I know why it feels like to be in one; but…” Well, here goes nothing. “I don’t think that you’re the only one who’s at fault like what she had told you earlier tonight,”
Sonic lifted his head to look at the black and red hedgehog, his expression being that of surprise. Is Shadow trying to talk to him about this or…give him his opinion about it? The blue hedgehog wasn’t sure anymore but allowed himself to listen to what his rival has to say.
“It seems like, the princess doesn't know you or understand you enough to know that you’ll do anything to ensure this world’s protection. Even if you must sacrifice yourself for it. Because you believe that if no one else can stand up for themselves, you wonder who will?” The black hedgehog paused to run his hand through his quills in slight frustration. Why did he decided to do this? He’s never had to deal with anything like this or given this kind of talk to anyone before. “And it may also be a good thing that you broke up with her because; now you could find someone who truly understands you, who can keep up with you, someone who’s willing to give you space and treat you like a person instead of an object and…someone who’s willing to let you fight and be with them at the same time.” Shadow averted his eyes away from the blue hedgehog, not sure what else he could say and feeling a little annoyed, that he had to open up his thoughts like that to his rival.
The blue hedgehog looked at his rival in awe as a strange warm feeling in his chest began to bloom just from hearing Shadow’s words. Despite initially trying to avoid showing how much he cares for him, it was quite obvious that he does, even though it’s actually none of his business and that Shadow had a choice if he wanted to try to comfort him or not.
“You really think it was good that Sally and I broke up, despite the slap?” Sonic could still feel that stinging pain on his cheek from it, along with the broken shards of his heart which seem to dull quite a lot, thanks to his rival and the warm feeling that seem to work as a strong anesthetic.
“What do you think, hedgehog?” Shadow responded, arms folded and giving him a look that accurately says, ‘Come on think, you idiot!’
Seeing the look that he was receiving from his rival, Sonic began thinking on Shadow’s words and the breakup between him and Sally. Despite the fact, he declined when she asked him to give up fighting and stay by her side, he does understand her reason why she asked him however, if he imagined he was in the same position where she sacrificed herself and got lost in space for year instead of him. But he knew that if they or anyone is going have a real future; he needs to help fight this war with everyone else too, otherwise there is a possible chance that they won’t be able to win.
And…if he was also being pretty honest with himself; He hated the idea of someone trying to groom him into someone he’s not; like he’s some-kind of pet or fancy toy for them to play with, instead being treated like an equal. Of course, he knows Sally would never treat him like that, but the thought of it really does scare him. Plus, she should’ve known by now what kind of a person he is by now after all those together, even as kids so; it’s just like what Shadow said. If Sally doesn’t understand his need to risk his life in order to help or save other from Robotnik and to protect Mobius, then maybe she isn’t the one for him.
Sonic couldn’t help himself but let out a breathless laugh, from the irony of the entire situation he got himself into with the black hedgehog.
“I never thought I’ll ever say this but, I think you’re right Shadow.”
The black hedgehog only smirked in response, feeling a little smug. “Hmph! So, you are not as stupid as you look, Faker!”
He then stood up, from where he sat next to his rival. Sonic followed him shortly, standing up from the ground before placing his hand on the Ultimate Lifeform’s arm.
“But really Shadow, thanks for that talk you gave me. I appreciate it.”
Shadow’s eyes widen a little from the touch on his arm, as the warmth in his chest, seemed to grow hotter and started going up to his muzzle. He fought hard to keep the warmth away from reaching his cheeks.
“N-no need to thank me Faker.” He took a small pause to calm himself before continuing, “But know that after this, nothing changes between us. After this night is over, I believe that it is best for the two of us, to forget that this ever happened.”
Sonic only smirked back, “Alright then Faker. After this, we’ll leave this little talk between us forgotten and we’ll go back to kicking each other’s butts, the next time we ran into each other again. Not that you ever managed to kick mine anyway.”
The black hedgehog simply rolled his eyes, “Keep dreaming, Faker.” He said before also adding, “You may also want to go and find your friends as well considering how you just ran away from them earlier tonight.”
This made the blue hero pout after hearing that last sentence, his rival had said to him. But he does have a point though (as much as he hates to admit it.). “And I’ll also forget that you’re also the Ultimate Softie too, Faker!” he yelled out, after waving a goodbye and taking off towards Knothole.
As the blue hedgehog ran off, leaving the black hedgehog standing there by himself in the clearing. Shadow places a hand over his chest where the warmth seems to be, briefly questioning what it is. He then lets out a tiny sigh before skating off into the other direction. Time to get back on his most important mission, now that this one is complete.

My Doctor: Thirteen x Reader - Part 2
Tumblr media
Summary: You’ve landed in Sheffield and are about to change the lives of a small group of people.
Of all places to land after the TARDIS kicked you out, you landed in a train with very scared and confused people on-board.
You got to your feet and hoped to get some time to talk to your, now, wife. All those thoughts went out the window when an alien showed up, so it was a good time to shut up and help out.
The Doctor just kept on talking, you had to kiss her to stop and get her to focus. She reminded you of her past self, the one with the bowtie. The one you married. She brought a smile to your face.
"Sorry, I'm distracting myself." She grinned and turned around to face the alien.
Now that these people had just witnessed that, they had become apart of the team to figure out what was going on.
Running through Sheffield wasn't exactly what you had planned, but it turned out to be quite exciting and you had grown quite fond of your new found friends.
"So, you're married to an alien?" Ryan asked at one point.
"Yes."
"Are you...?"
"Alien? Yes. Now."
"What do you mean 'now'?" He asked narrowing his brow.
"I was human before." You gave him a sweet smile. "The Doctor did something stupid and had my life saved by using up something valuable to Timelords. Now I'm one of them, basically speaking." You shrugged your shoulders.
Ryan was fascinated by you, that's for sure.
Then the time came when you both had to leave. Returning to the TARDIS was the main goal. You held your Doctor's hand and thanked your friends for their help, still feeling awful that Grace had fallen.
The Doctor gave your hand a squeeze and used her free hand to use the sonic, both of you closing your eyes tightly as you expected to be on the TARDIS. Of course, it didn't quite work out that way as when you opened your eyes, you were floating in space, your wife floating beside you and to your left, your new friends.
Everything after that was a blur as when you woke up you were on a ship with Ryan and Graham.
A woman, who was piloting the ship, told you all that she had found you out in space. Just you three. Graham argued with her a little bit, before Ryan asked her where you all were in space.
"There was five of us in total." You tried.
"I only saw the three of you." The blonde woman repeated. You were rolled your eyes. "Hold up, landing ahead."
"No no no, were not doing anything until you turn this ship around and take us back to our friends." Graham came up beside you.
"There would be no point. If they were even still out there they'd be dead." The woman looked him in the eye.
"They can't be dead." You said firmly, looking her in the eye. "Don't panic," you turned to Ryan and Graham, "we'll figure this out."
You all sat down prepared for landing, your thoughts going to the Doctor hoping she was safe and fine and that Yaz was with her. You'd find her again, you knew you would.
The planet looked like a desert, bare and Sandy looking. There was no life in sight. No buildings or anything. Just the ship you came in and your little group.
Ryan and Graham stood beside one another and looked out ahead of them.
"We're on another planet." Ryan spoke as if to try and let that thought sink in.
"Yeah." Graham' s thoughts were all over the place.
"Not your first planet then?" Ryan asked looking at you as you smiled at the pair of them. "Course it isn't, silly question."
You chuckled. "I've been to many planets. Many moons. Many worlds. I still get amazed by things, even desolate planets like this one."
The woman who brought you here went on ahead to take in the readings of the planet.
"What shall we do?" Ryan asked, now over the shock of being on another planet.
"Follow her?" Her suggested.
The pair nodded and walked beside you as you made your way to catch up to your pilot.
"Maybe they're already here, Yaz and the Doctor. Maybe they're safe." Ryan said, hope laced in his voice.
"Yeah. Guess we'll find out." You muttered, fiddling with the ring on your finger.
The three of you were non the wiser to Yaz and the Doctor still being in space.
Graham and the pilot began to argue you some more once you had caught up to her. The urge to roll your eyes at the pair of them was hard to resist.
A low rumbling sounded from far up above, all of you turned to see where it was coming from.
The pilot sounded impressed.
A ship came into view. It was hurtling towards the planet and right at all of you. In a desperate urge to not die you trapped the sleeves of Ryan and Graham and began to run.
"It's heading straight for us. Run!"
The pilot was quick to follow.
The ship hit the ground and began to slide along the ground, it's speed slowing, but not fast enough. Dirt flew up into the air and made the air fill with dust and sand.
Ryan tripped and both you and Graham made quick work to get him back on his feet. Just in time too.
The moment he was up again, however, the four of you fell back and rolled down the hill. The ship glided along the ground for a few moments more before it stopped entirely.
You got to your feet and looked up through the sand that was still floating through the air. There was silence for a while and then you head Ryan.
"Doctor!"
You cast your gaze over to where she came into view and smiled. Relief washed over you.
"Sorry about the mess." She apologised with her hands up.
Ryan and Graham went over to greet Yaz, happy she was alive and here.
You can straight into the Doctor's arm. She accepted it gladly, relieved to see you were OK. You could feel her bury her face into your shoulder and give you a squeeze.
"I'm so happy you're alright." You mumbled into her ear. "For a moment I did wonder if I'd see you again."
She pulled back just far enough to see your face.
"Don't ever doubt me." She wasn't angry, just teasing. "I'll come back to you, remember that." She kissed your head and grasped your hand as she turned to the group.
"Quick update: I made a terrible mistake and we shouldn't be here. I'm going to fix it and get you guys home." She promised. "As soon as I figure out where we are."
She then assured the group that should would figure all that out and then welcomed them to their first alien planet, wanting them not to touch anything.
That made you giggle and her smile.
You all followed her as she wandered off, her hand still in yours.
A siren of sorts sounded out over the hills and the two pilots of the ships marched on ahead, seemingly knowing what that sound was.
It led you all to a tent in the middle of no where.
Things were about to get complicated. You could just tell.
The Doctor explained to Graham why you could understand the aliens, via implants due to a lack of the TARDIS, and led you a inside where a man was sitting. The Doctor waved her hand through him to confirm him being a hologram and then introduced you all. She then went on to explain how you all ended up there while the pilots argued about you all being bonuses, and finally asked what the situation was because everyone was clearly confused.
Hologram man explained that it was a race. A space race. The pilots were the finalists. The winner would receive a prize. The with of which, was lost on you.
The last challenge was for the pilots to cross the terrain of the planet and reach the place named the Ghost Monument. The loser would be left here.
Cruel.
You shared a look with the Doctor. Neither one of you agreed with the outcome of the race.
The hologram explained the rules to the pilots and where the Ghost Monument was located. Apparently the planet was quite viscous and the water was dangerous.
Hostile planets were not your thing.
"I know you prefer to ignore the Doctor, but what is the Ghost Monument?" You asked, hoping her answer you.
The pilots prepared themselves for their task as he explained to you that it was legend told by many of a monument that appears in the same place every thousand solar rotations.
You cast a glance to the Doctor and wondered for just a moment if it was possible.
"What does it look like?" The Doctor asked, almost desperate to know.
"What does it matter?" He asked her, walking through her.
The Doctor told him outright that you were a group of people who barely knew each other stranded on a planet with no equipment and very little to go on.
Then he showed her.
That feeling you had was right.
You smiled.
"The TARDIS." All hope was coming back to you now. "Thank you so much."
The Doctor reached for your hand and pulled you close to her side gently. She was relieved to see her beautiful TARDIS.
The tent around you vanished.
"Bye then." The Doctor sighed.
The Doctor was smiling wider than you had seen her smile all day. She was excited and also full of hope. She  began to explain to the group that the Ghost Monument was her ship, the TARDIS, and that if you all made the journey to it, she could take them home. She explained why she thinks the TARDIS is phasing in out and as it appears to be doing and how should could stabilise it. Knowing she could made you happy, because you just wanted to return to your currently unstable home.
The Doctor promised them once more that she could get them home.
"We should follow them." You suggested, looking out to where the pilots had set off to.
"Let's get a shift on." She grabbed your hand once again and began to follow the pilots, the rest following behind.
Home was closer than you thought.

The story begins a few million years after the formation of Spherus Magna.
Inside the remnants of the great being robot, Makuta planted two canisters with his creations, two engineers that were made with the purpose of rebuilding the Makuta empire and rule the universe in the name of Teridax. Their name were Mysterio and Magnuros. Mysterio was a noble warrior that believed in inter-species equality and peace through unity, while Magnuros was a Tyrannic gladiator that believed in peace through tyranny and opression.
Mysterio was naive enough not to suspect his brother of any dark and devious plans. They both created 9 makuta together in the following order.
Zerkon(the prototype and most unstable mentally, sociopathic tendencies, considered to be the most dangerous)
Zinus(Zerkon's twin brother, calm and collected, could generate chains from inside his arms in a Spider-Man fashion)
Taknor(A brilliant scientist that has a bigger ego than himself, he granted himself powers by constantly upgrading his biomechanical body)
Voltrax(a honorable swordsman that believed in honor to the end)
Mesanok(A mutant with unstable powers, his right half was red and had explosive powers, his left half was green and could produce flamable acid)
"D'compose"(he was able to regenerate at a subatomic level and at a fast pace)
Xenoth(two headed and super strong) Rekan(much like Umbra , his feet had wheels that granted him super stregth
and Arana(the only female of the group, considered the weakest).
Mysterio eventually overheard his plan and decided to act against it by talking to the Great Spirit himself, being blessed with Teridax' Krahkaan, he was able to sneak inside the OoMN's Vault, without being detected. He communicated with Mata nui and was granted 8 elemental stones to create a new generation of toa.
Lancelot-Captain of the Ta-koro guard, born to be a warrior(Toa of Fire)
Sentinel-former archeologist, an advanced matoran prototype created by Arthaka himself(Toa of Iron)
Botan:former musician of the Le-koro choir, a treehugger at heart(Toa of Plantlife)
Korax: Chief Medical officer of the Ko-koro medical institute, he gained the ability to fly once turned into a toa in order to provide quicker medical assistance on the field(Toa of Ice)
Nidalee: she was a former Po-koro athlete with incredible fighting skills(Po-Koro)
Horvath: worked as an archer for the Ko-Koro defense team, incredible accuracy and calm under tough situations(Toa of Ice)
Luxanna: a biology teacher in Ga-koro, she admired Nokama's work and dreamed about becoming a toa herself someday , even though her kindness might give her a disadvantage.(Toa of water).
Suletu:probably the most loveable Le-koran, He used to be a bartender, very sociable and loyal to his people.(Toa of air)
On the course of 1 year he trained them to become warriors in every sort of the way. The OoMN lead by Helryx welcomed Mysterio and the new toa as their protectors. In the meantime, Magnuros assasinated Zerkon by shooting him in the back of the head since he became too self-aware and intelligent to manipulate, and disposed of his body by sending it to the southest continent.
Mysterio did however have an asset in the Makuta team, Arana has been secretly providing information about the grand return of the Makuta empire and the day of the attack
Everything went downhill in their clash. Half the toa team mysteriously(Horvath,Suletu,Luxanna and Sentinel) vanquished, the makuta were close to winning , the remaining 4 and Mysterio could barely hold eachother up. As Magnuros was about to shoot his brother down , Arana jumped in and took the blow full-on, dying on impact. That gave Mysterio the chance to strike by unleashing the demonic powers of his mask, leaving his older brother almost done for.
Magnuros: are you not going to finish what you started brother? Isn't this what you wanted
Mysterio: the universe is said to be impartial and in balance, however it always picks the good side of the spectrum...even if you think you are victorious....the universe will make it short-lived, farewell...until we meet again.
He left the makuta lair carrying Arana's body, followed by his remaining team, a scene that would haunt Magnetron for the rest of his existence.
Later on, after celebrating the bittersweet victory against the Makuta, The Great Spirit rewarded Mysterio's noble soul by rebuilding him into a Toa of Shadows because "Even Darkness, can create a path of Light"-MN-2011 years ASM(After Spherus Magna)
In the makuta lair, as Magnuros is recovering after the battle, his second in command welcomes his Fallen leader
Taknor:"You fought bravely my Lord, you've put quite a show"
Magnuros:"I do not need your pitty Taknor....It's time for things to change around here"
Taknor: "I'm glad we can agree...this will make things so much easier for me" *He takes Magnetron's sword and impales it's bearer owner right in the chest and through the Throne"
Magnuros: hanghh! W-what have you..done?!
Taknor: my maker...you are weak, you gave birth to such unique and twisted creations....but you...you are not worthy of leading our kind to Victory...I will not allow failure...for I shall take command of my brothers....
During the following 4 years, The OoMN created a task force lead by Sergeant Curanos Peddlestick, Super soldiers created from matoran volunteers with the purpose of becoming law enforcers and military teams for their Toa Generals , seeing as there aren't enough Toa to defend the whole matoran population(pretty much a Jedi-Clone Troopers relationship)
Although one of them wasnt that keen on Taking orders from toa, that being Vespirion , Lance's lieutenant. He became power hungry, so he decided to steal the mask of life and use it for "The greater good". However, the mask sensed his villanous tendencies and mutated him into a horrifying monster, able to control soundwaves and generate sonic pulses(since he was originally a matoran of sonics before recruitment). Not only that but the mask's power burst created a shockwave that spread over a radius of 1000 miles. So far it is yet unknown if it caused any damage. Sergeant Curanos spotted Vespirion and took him head on.
Serge: "you bit more than yer teeth could nibble on, ain't it lad?Look what greed brings ya. Yer mammy not gonna love that face , but don't'cha worry, after I'm done kicking yer bum, she won't even recognise ya"
The fight lasted quite a fair bit, until Serge gave him the final blow, Vespirion however managed to flee, despite his bad state.
After this incident, Helryx makes a disturbing statement: "To whoever decides to rebel against my will for peace, shall suffer grace consequences, today one of our most trusted soldiers became one of our greatest enemy, thus I want him to face justice accordingly. Once we find him, he shall be executed for his crimes"
The matoran society became disgusted by their supposed protector , claims such as "We are safe from others but not from her" and "Our Guardian is also our Executioner" sprouted an outrage , thus a lot of digging lead to exposing a lot of Helryx's shady acts during her time as head leader of the OoMN. The matoran demanded the choice of a new leader to go against her corruptive and manipulative ways. Thus the OoMN unanimously voted in favour of Mysterio as their leader due to his acts of bravery , selflessness and code of honor. Helryx was then exiled from the Matorans' land and found shelter on Arthaka's new island.
Later on , The Shadowed one sent a letter towards Taknor and the Makuta Brotherhood "I have a business Proposition for you and your Makuta, meet me at the coordinations on the back of the letter so we can discuss like two civilised beings". Of course, Taknor agreed to meet him, the location however was the Fortress of Odina itself(The new fortress got named after the island they were back in the days of the Matoran universe). However the meeting didn't go as well planned.
Taknor: "how could you possibly believe that we'd be interested in collaborating with low-lives like you, you are nothing but Spineless mercenaries"
Tso:"You dare insult me...right under the roof of my home, the place I welcomed you in as if you were part of our beautiful family, and you step on my generosity as if it were a rodent! Here's my current business proposition... I challenge you to fight me....If you win, this entire place and every non-living thing is all yours, but ....If I win.....all of you shall become my property....what do you say? 7 Makuta, against poor old me and 6 of my strongest Darkhunters..."
Taknor: "you've got a deal merchant..."
Unfortunately for Taknor, his cocky attitude ended up being his downfall. One by one his makuta were being heavily wounded by their Dark Hunter challengers. Taknor took a serious beating, Broken bones, massive open wounds, his right hand completely chopped off, he was the last one standing.
Tso:"I'm ready to claim my prize Taknor...I want to celebrate already...Quite admirable, you trully are the strongest amongst them...that's good enough for me, you'd make a great asset....Darkhunters, we have our Prize....Kill them all..."
Taknor:"I will not allow you to do such thing to my brothers! I will not stop fighting!"
Tso:"....but Spare Taknor....He is one of us now.....He will learn the hard way about how actions have consequences..."*with a quick swing of his staff , he knocks Taknor off his feet*"I want him fixed by tomorrow...His discipline lessons need no further delay"
As Taknor helplessly witnessed the execution of his brothers, He sworn to himself, that he will defeat his new Master and claim his empire for himself.
*on the course of this current year, a few more Darkhunters join the Darkhunter Legion*
Darkhunters so far :
-Daxidous
-Gazestealer
-Larsika
-Pelgrax
-Pincer
-Screecher
-Taknor
-Tetra
-Tyrannus
-Vespirion(found, repaired and recruited)
-Virus
With his men and women ready , Tso started the first phase of his plan to conquer the industry of Spherus Magna, that being "Intimidation". He sent his most trusted darkhunters to send havoc among 5 of the 6 regions of the new Island of Mata nui:
-"Screecher"-Bombed Le-koro with zamor spheres
-Pelgrax-Flooded Po-koro with his water powers
-Tetra-Sunk Ga-Koro with her brute strength
-Daxiodus- caused an avalanche over Ko-koro
-Vespirion- created a sonic pulse that collapsed Onu-koro's entire cave system.
They are known as the ,Darkhunter Justice Division"(DhJD for short)- this group, comprised of the most loyal hunters of the Shadowed one were trained to be capable of disposing of any darkhunters that turn or intend to turn against their leader, either through Rebellion,Lack of loyalty and beliefs of any kind.
Although the plan was a success, not all of them came back. During his Mission, Vespirion was directly confronted by his arch enemy, Sergeant Curanos Peddlestick and didn't make it out alive. Vespirion's lifeless body was found at the blocked entrace of the cave system.
The next day was to be the second phase of the plan, to slowly make the Matoran, toa and OoMN lose faith, the "Assault on Ta-koro" , where the Mask of Light is kept safe since Takanuva's passing into the afterlife.
Luckily the toa predicted their next move , so they gathered all in Ta-koro, together with their troops and Serge. But not even their assumptions were good enough, even though they had a strong number, that didn't help them.
The Darkhunters came well armed, plowing through their defenses with ease. As the toa and troops kept fighting , Tso kept making his way up to the tower. Right when the Darkhunters seemed to lose, a new face showed up , a darkhunter no one has seen before, he was very skilled, strong and vicious. He easily cut down the dozens of soldiers until he came face to face with The Sergeant himself, unfortunately, not even his years of military service kept him safe. Once he was weakened, the Darkhunter raised his wrist blade and with one fell swoop, cut his right forearm and right lower leg.
???: I have to admit full of regrer.. Sergeant...I expected a better fight
Serge: Tell me mistah smarty pants, who be the sonovabohrok Standing in front of me eye?
Scourge: I am Scourge, and my face is the last thing you'll ever see my Illiterate yet charming friend...
However two troops interfered , getting badly wounded by one of Scourge's landmines, giving Serge the time to shoot a harpoon that got it's rope tangled up on Scourge's foot sending him away at a safe distance. They both knew it won't be their last encounter. Scourge kept fighting until he got face to face with Mysterio, he was about to overpower the toa of shadows until a trooper pushed him out of harm's way, which sadly ended in the soldier's forearms getting severed  completely off.
Scourge:"This loyalty is admirable but that won't make me forgive you for what you've just done..."
In the meantime, Lance and Tso are having a serious beat down over the mask of light. Both are heavily wounded, most notably , Tso's tail has been completely ripped off by Lance's bare hands and sheer strength. And Lance has a big stab wound in his chest.
Tso: you have nowhere else to go toa...surrender the mask and I might let you leave
Lance: "I am a warrior till the end, but a repulsive creature like you Shadowed one is too low for that word...only someone as dishonorable as you would use their people for monetary gain...you did that with your own species...you enslaved the Steltians and killed your only friend..."
Tso: "<<Ancient>> had a painless death, you however will not!"
The shadowed one blows a hole in Lance's chest, making him loose balance and blood, he leans over the edge of the tower, and lets out one final battlecry"Unity....Duty....DESTINY!" he leans back and throws himself over the edge of the central tower , holding the mask of light tightly, with his final moments, he opens a portal using his Kualsi(mask of teleportation) and tosses the mask through it, in a safe place that only he knows of. As he plunges down the tower, all eyes are on him, toa, dark hunters matoran, all watch his body crash down lifeless.
The shadowed one orders the Darkhunters to fall back since Lance's final act turned their victory into defeat, but one thing's for sure, the toa suffered a lot of losses.
Mysterio:"how many were we before the attack?"
Korax: 2.000 troops, 5 toa, 21.000 matoran
Mysterio: afterwards?
Korax:"*sigh*..1995 dead troopers, 5 injuired badly....1 dead toa...4 alive...aand  50 mildly injuired matoran, no matoran casualties luckily.
Mysterio:"The remaining troops...I want names."
Korax:" Sergeant Curanos of Kini-nui-lost right arm and right leg , Lieutenant Herrandra of Ta-koro-she has a major concussion , Gravion of Po-koro-lost both arms , Rackus of Le-Koro- lost left arm from Scourge's grenade, Reiner of Le-koro lost his right arm to the same explosion"
Mysterio:"I want you to do everything possible to save their lives, and have Sergeant promote them to Members of the Order of Mata Nui"
Korax:" I'll do my best"
Mysterio:"Lance..."
Korax:" he died before his body hit the ground....in mid-fall....no matter how early we would've gotten to him...there was nothing we could've done..."
Mysterio:"I wish I could say that we don't have time to mourn our loses....but the sacrifice was too great...we need to pay tribute to the brave souls we lost today"

“I call people dude now!”
Tumblr media
Hello friends! Over the weekend I had myself a pretty difficult time. I learned a friend of mine is dying and there’s nothing that can be done for it. Because of this, I am not sure how long or thought out this article will be. I might just touch on some key elements from last night’s episode. Either way, I do have half of a Twin Peaks article written, and Edge of Destruction has been viewed, so expect those soon. Also, a friend of mine asked me to submit an article for her zine, and I will be writing that for both this and the zine. You can probably expect that one soon as well!
So far Chris Chibnall has proven to be an interesting showrunner. I’ve not hidden my disdain for his writing at times, but in other ways, I really do enjoy his work. His scripts have the tendency to be like a box of bran cereal with a really cool toy at the bottom. There’s a lot that works, and there’s a lot that doesn’t. One of my biggest issues with "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship," was how dour and depressing it was at times. With a title like that, you’d expect something more lighthearted. When I saw the trailer for last night’s episode, my biggest hope would be that it was more akin to "Gremlins 2." Something kind of camp and silly, which in some ways we did get.
The episode opens in a large hotel in Sheffield. A man named Jack Robertson (a Donald Trump proxy) is discussing the logistics of a vague problem that could "cost [him] in 2020." The woman he’s speaking to, Frankie, is his niece’s wife, though he had to be reminded of this. So far, we don’t like this guy much. His bodyguard waits to whisk him off to his plane, while he tells Frankie to make their problem disappear, though she’s not so sure it’s that easy. Before they can discuss this any further, they are interrupted by a woman named Najia Khan, the general manager of the hotel. She’s there to check up on things before the grand opening. Very callously Robertson fires her (further solidifying his Donald Trump status, and his role as the hotel owner) seemingly for interrupting his nefarious meeting. He gives Frankie and hour to "make this all go away."
Before saying anything else, I would like to talk about that time vortex sequence! How cool was that? The last time we saw the time vortex in such intimate detail was "Timelash," which if you ask the fandom, was pretty bad. (Though I sorta love it for that.) Elements of it reminded me of the hyperspace scenes from "Babylon 5," and other elements reminded me of "Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure," how you could take certain avenues to sort of dial a point in time. The way the sequence segues into the console room was a beautiful bit of production value series eleven has needed. (Even those god-awful closeups were missing!)
Tumblr media
Watching the Doctor and her companions all fly the TARDIS, was kind of great. I was reminded of the scene in "Journey’s End," when the Doctor and his friends pilot the TARDIS together. I loved the idea of her still getting used to the controls. If you’ve not watched the video on YouTube of the production crew talking about the TARDIS interior, you really should. It’s a lovely glimpse into the design process. Not to be outshone, the exterior of the TARDIS, in its brilliant aqua blue, lands in Sheffield. This may be one of the Doctor’s best landings ever. She’s in Sheffield, it’s the right period, they’re right outside Yaz’s, and it’s only been thirty minutes since they were teleported away from the warehouse into the depths of space.
The Doctor made good on her promise- she brought her friends home. Looking like a kicked puppy, it’s more than obvious she doesn’t want to say goodbye. Yaz, picking up on this, invites her and the others up for tea. It’s a rather sweet scene. Graham, who’s not yet had any downtime to mourn since the funeral, decides to nip back home for a moment. Ryan offers to join, but Graham needs to do it alone. It’s a nice bit of character development between them. I rather loved it.
While heading into Yaz’s flat, the Doctor notices a worried woman trying to reach the occupant of a flat a couple doors down. She also notices a bit of spiderweb but doesn’t pay it much mind. Yaz lives with her family still, and we’re introduced to her dad and sister. I’ve been saying how I wanted a bit more Yaz, and this episode really delivers. Her dad is pretty much instantly likeable. He’s excitable, friendly, and has a personal project of keeping rubbish in the living room, or "evidence," as he calls it. It’s a conspiracy! Yaz’s sister is the typical bratty little sister. The banter they share was also charming. She teases Yaz that she’s surprised she even has friends. Yaz is usually too married to her job to worry about friends. Yaz counters with “At least I have a job to be married to.” I like sassy Yaz.
Tumblr media
The Doctor is being her usual self- a bit weird. Marvelling at a couch is not exactly normal. Historically, she’s always been rather enamoured with the mundane elements of human life. Things like having a flat, going to work, watching a bit of telly, are all parts of a life she can never have. Yaz’s sister, Sonya, probes Ryan about his relationship to Yaz. She clearly has the hots for him. Yaz’s father, Hakim, wants to know if the police have followed up on the rubbish he’s collected. Before she can answer, Yaz’s phone rings revealing Najia to be her mother on the other end. She tells her she needs a ride home from work. (If you recall from my "The Woman Who Fell to Earth," review, I wondered if she didn’t have a mother, well she does!)
The sisters’ bickering as Yaz leaves, reminds the Doctor of her sisters. It also reminds her of the time she was a sister at an aqua-hospital, that actually turned out to be a training camp for the "Quiston Calcium Assassins." Ryan responds with "Going off on one again…" Which is what she’s doing right? Going off on a little tangent. Then why is it that the line really irked me? The Doctor is known for always telling stupid little stories, but this one really got to me. It’s right up there with suddenly having Audrey Hepburn or maybe Pythagoras’ sunglasses in her pockets. It’s a question of when. When would she have been a sister with some order of nuns?
The Doctor has always been male leading up to this point. So when would she be a woman in a past life to do this? When in this life would she have done this and not had Ryan around to have witnessed it first hand? If it’s just Chibnall trying to be cute, he’s really bad at it. It leaves you asking the wrong kind of questions, and for me, actually took me out of the story for a moment. Another implication is some "The Brain of Morbius" level fuckery indicating that the First Doctor, is not in fact, the first incarnation, which you could make an argument for. The War Doctor didn’t go as "the Doctor," which makes him "The War Doctor," and not "The Ninth Doctor." Another implication is that one of the past incarnations had a bit of a drag phase, which I could actually see. Both Two and Three have dressed in drag before. Either way, it’s a bad line and Chibnall should feel bad. (Ok rant over)
The Doctor notices that the Khans have a parcel to pick up from the neighbour down the way.  She offers to go pick it up while Yaz’s dad cooks his terrible pakora. We’re now back with Graham at his home. We see more of that portentous spiderweb. The house is empty and feels lifeless. It’s the first time he’s been back home since Grace died and is haunted by her essence, as depicted by having Sharon D Clarke actually there as Grace. She talks to him about all of the little things around the house he’ll need to remember to keep the house in working order. He indicates that he has something else to tell her, but it’s left unsaid. He sits and smells her clothes, trying to remember her. Anyone who has ever lost a loved one can immediately identify with this. I found these moments with Graham and Grace very effective. He’s interrupted by a sound up in Ryan’s room, where he finds massive strands of spider web, and the moulted exoskeleton of a spider the size of a house cat.
Tumblr media
Graham isn’t the only one dealing with large spiders though. The Doctor and Ryan are about to discover these overgrown arachnids themselves. The parcel they’re picking up is at the same flat where the woman, we now know as Jade, was trying to reach her friend Anna. They both work in the same lab at their uni. After confirming Anna may be in trouble, the Doctor sonics the door open. Inside, the flat is covered in the same webbing as Ryan’s room. I’m reminded of "Mulholland Drive," where Naomi Watts and Elena Harring search the apartment of Diane Selwyn. Rather horrified, they discover the body of poor Anna, cocooned in spiderweb. "Spiders don’t do that, do they?" asks Ryan, but the Doctor asks a more important question- where is the spider that did this now?
Tumblr media
Many people are squeamish about spiders. My mate Gerry’s wife sat this episode out, due to an intense dislike of the little creatures. Which is why I found myself rather amused when they finally show the spider, and it’s actually a bit cute. It’s a brown house spider, once again, about the size of a cat, but it is rather aggressive toward the Doctor, Ryan and Jade. Using some quick thinking, the Doctor uses vinegar and garlic paste to keep the spider quarantined, as the noses in spiders’ feet are sensitive to these substances. She creates a sort of perimeter around the spider which seems to work. Now outside the flat, they meet up with Graham who has also seen some freaky stuff today! Graham gives Ryan a sealed letter that he found back home. It’s from his father, who if you remember correctly, didn’t attend Grace’s funeral. The Doctor asks Jade to take her back to the lab where she’s been testing on spiders. Hakim and Sonya are having pakora alone tonight it would seem.
The Doctor tells Jade she thinks she knows more than she leads on. She questions Jade about their experiments, but Jade defends their practices. They’ve been doing everything within the law. The spider carcasses are disposed of by a special containment unit. She doesn’t know why the spiders are mutating. Jade has been plotting out instances of giant spiders on a map in the lab. In what may be one of the most overused tropes in cinema history, the Doctor connects the dots with a series of lines all pointing to one centre point. It’s a bit stupid when you realise she could have just pointed at the centre point of the dots to the exact same effect, but that wouldn’t look as cool right? The centre point is, of course, the hotel Najia just got fired from, where she’s still waiting for Yaz.
Tumblr media
Frankie walks through a pair of doors marked with danger warnings, into an underground tunnel that looks like rock that’s been excavated by human hands. It’s full of spider web. Timid and afraid, Frankie moves forward with her camera phone but is taken suddenly to her doom by an offscreen spider. Back in the lobby, Jack Robertson and Kevin confront Najia and Yaz who has just arrived. I was slightly frustrated by the fact that Kevin pulls a gun on Yaz and she doesn’t mention once that she’s a police officer. Not once does she cite any kind of statute or even try and calm the situation as a police officer. They explain that Yaz was there to pick her up, but feeling antagonistic, Robertson wants to show Yaz how bad her mother is at her job, and why he fired her. He takes them to a room full of spider web.
While in the room, Yaz thinks she hears something through the walls but is called away by the Doctor who is now outside the hotel with Jade, Ryan, and Graham. Still in the room, Kevin and Robertson are confronted by a very large spider, about the size of a car. Robertson very cowardly leaves Kevin as bait as he’s dragged into the depths underneath the hotel to his death. Poor Kevin.
Tumblr media
The Doctor, using psychic paper (a nice callback I was hoping to see) tells Robertson she’s there on official business and goes about looking for the source of the spiders. Ryan and Graham know exactly who he is, as he’s a bit famous. Their standing there grinning like idiots at Robertson was cute. I loved the bravery the Doctor shows when sticking her head into the giant spider-sized hole to get a peek, and what a peek she gets! She pulls her head back just in time as the giant spider lunges at her and they all sprint toward the exit of the hotel, which has now been completely webbed up, which it hadn’t been before. The spiders are trapping them in!
Tumblr media
The Doctor refers to Yaz’s mum since she knows the hotel so intimately. They go hide out in the kitchen where everyone begins asking questions. The Doctor doesn’t seem to know who Robertson is, much to his annoyance. She rather humorously asks if he’s the Ed Sheeran she’s been hearing so much about. Robertson, it turns out, is gunning for the presidency in 2020, mostly out of disdain for Trump. So he can’t be all bad, right? Robertson butts against the Doctor’s authority, but the companions in a sign of solidarity let him know with no uncertainty that she’s in charge. The Doctor sends Ryan and Graham to capture a spider for Jade to inspect and takes everyone else to find a map of the hotel.
Graham and Ryan find a spider and catch it in a cooking pot, only to get chased down the hall by an agitated army of arachnids. It’s about the closest the spiders get to being actually scary in the entire episode. If you don’t suffer from arachnophobia, it’s really rather tame. The true villain, as it turns out, is capitalism. It’s revealed that Robertson built the hotel on top of an old mine that was used as a landfill. It’s a profitable endeavour from his perspective. Get paid to cart off a bunch of rubbish, find use for a disused mine, and build a lavish resort on top of it! This explains the rubbish Mr Khan had been finding sprouting up all around Sheffield. While looking over maps, Najia wants to know how Yaz knows the Doctor and even asks if they’re in a relationship. The Doctor naively asks Yaz if they are, as she’s been ignorant to this sort of thing in the past. (Be still my heart.) They find the entrance to the mine on the map and set off.
As they barge past the danger doors, Robertson protests, trying to use his powerful status to keep everyone from discovering his dirty secret. He tries to stop Najia, and in what may be the best line of the episode she defiantly looks him in the eye and says "You’re not the boss of me anymore." Oof. Good one, girl. Now inside, they find the bodies of Frankie, Kevin, and several others, all of whom met the same fate as poor Anna. Even the callous Robertson can’t hide the tinge of guilt on his face, though it doesn’t stop him from pocketing Kevin’s web caked gun. Anna, who had spider pheromones on her from the lab, attracted spiders to her home from this location. (Why neither Jade nor the lab had been affected, or why they were attracted to the O'Brien homestead is anyone’s guess.) In a very "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," moment, it’s revealed that the toxic waste of gases building up, and the improperly disposed spider carcasses created a sort of mutagenic stew to breed giant mutant spiders. It’s all a rather stupid explanation, but I kind of love it for that. It was Laird and Eastman’s Doctor Who. I’m all for it.
Tumblr media
Back in the kitchen, Jade tells Ryan and Graham she needs a bigger specimen, which basically is only written in as an excuse to give the two of them something to do. It’s a bit sloppy and doesn’t go anywhere. It does, however, give us a nice opportunity to have a bit of a heart to heart between Graham and Ryan. Ryan tells Graham that he read the letter from his father. He mentions he doesn’t like that his father referred to himself as the only proper family Ryan had left, indicating that he still thinks of Graham as family. Does this mean we might hear him call Graham "Granddad," soon? Their heart to heart is cut short, however, when they are confronted in the ballroom by a giant spider.
Tumblr media
Once again, the spiders aren’t very scary, as the two of them escape rather quickly and they’re back in the kitchen. Why the kitchen has been established as the safest place in the hotel, is still unknown, but Yaz’s mum said! Robertson reveals he has a panic room installed in the hotel. He has one in every hotel, as he’s a bit of a paranoid guy. When he had it installed in case the poor ever decided to rise up and eat the rich, I’ll bet he didn’t foresee them being spiders! The panic room has an ocular scanner, a small green laser that really should have blinded him if I’m being honest, but hey, it looks cool! In the panic room, Robertson has enough food and drink to survive for six months. He also had a rather swank entertainment system with a flat screen and giant speakers. Using Ryan’s phone, the Doctor devises a plan! (Always with Ryan’s phone, that one.)
The next sequence is something akin to the campiness I was hoping we would get from this episode- hip hop spiders! Drawn to the sick beats from Ryan’s phone, and Robertson’s sound system, the spiders all gather inside the panic room where the Doctor and her friends trap them inside. Robertson, however, has become increasingly paranoid in the face of being the least powerful man in the room and has decided to take refuge in the safety of his gun.
Tumblr media
The Doctor puts together a very "Ghostbusters," style backpack garden sprayer filled with peppermint and tea tree oil diluted in water. She plans on using this natural spider repellant as a way to wrangle the big spider that chased Graham and Ryan in the ballroom. After all, there’s the Sheffield Comic Con there in a week, they need it empty! However, the spider is behaving strangely. Under the weight of its own mass, the poor beast is struggling to breathe. The Doctor takes pity on it, and apologises to it, as she knows it’s going to die. Then the real monster enters the room in the form of Robertson wielding a gun. He fires a single shot into the spider, killing it, and angering the Doctor.
Now back at their homes, the companions all seem to be slightly removed from their roots. Before walking out of her flat, Yaz is told by Najia she still wants to know how she came to know the Doctor. There’s a sort of Jackie Tyler "I want to know who my daughter is out galavanting with," element to her questioning that I liked. They all convene back at the TARDIS, still parked outside Yaz’s. The Doctor invites them in, expecting to have to say goodbye. Instead, they decide they would rather travel with her. Graham says he’d rather grieve with her, than in an empty house. Ryan has no desire to resume working in a warehouse, and Yaz wants to see the universe. I rather like the responsibility the Doctor has been taking with her companions’ safety, as she tells them in no certain terms, that travelling with her will be dangerous. They all accept, and the Doctor christens their new "fam," as "the TARDIS team." Then, all together, they pull the lever and the TARDIS takes them on their next adventure!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that’s it, really. Which I must say, was a bit disappointing. Not the entire episode, but the ending. It sort of fizzled out. While I was actually rather pleased to see the spiders weren’t treated as big evil monsters, it would have been nice to actually have some sort of final showdown. Maybe Ryan gets webbed up and they had to save him before it was too late. Something. Sadly, most of the danger was short-lived, or off camera. Also, what actually happened with the spiders? Will they spend the rest of their lives listening to garage beats? How many of them were still out in the wild? Did the waste get cleaned up? Will there be a public outcry? Are there more people dead in their homes, wrapped in a gauze of spider web? What’s the difference between killing spiders outright, and starving them in a panic room? Lots of unanswered questions.
I liked that they gave us more interior shots of the TARDIS. I liked that the console room still has Gallifreyan written somewhere. With as much change as the show has gone through, it’s nice to see that continuity. Speaking of change, Jodie Whittaker continues to sparkle as the Doctor. But I did have some issues with her role in this episode. Aside from wrangling spiders, and figuring out what was happening, the Doctor doesn’t actually do much in the episode. I mean, did she do anything to ensure this won’t continue to happen?
While I rather liked Jack Robertson’s campy turn as the villain, even his story seemed to fizzle out. Considering the Doctor had once taken down the prime minister with six words, I expected her to give Robertson a warning or something. But alas, he, like every villain this season, lives to fight another day. Doctor Who writer Paul Magrs said on twitter recently that Missy would have made them into mincemeat by now, and I’m inclined to agree. The Doctor and her crew have yet to really face a truly terrifying foe. The stakes have been disappointingly low. I’m beginning to expect we’ll see a sort of legion of men scorned by the Doctor come together at the end of this series. Perhaps they’ll form a society of the Doctor’s evil exes. Is this all turning out to be one big metaphor for misogyny? Maybe. Regardless, I must say I rather enjoyed this one.

Oneshot: The Real Superpower of Teamwork!
Yes, the title of this is taken from Sonic Heroes in all its cheesy glory. I’ve been meaning to write something with Brick and Savannah and I finally got inspiration!
“If you hadn’t stood there and gaped like an idiot at that ham dinosaur, the pistachios would’ve been fine!” Brick ranted, pacing around the room. “You know what? Now that I think about it, if you hadn’t been so quick to report those bozos to Mr. Block, we could’ve defused the situation without him putting us on pistachio duty!”
Savannah was far more concerned with the nail file in her hand. “You can think?” she asked dryly. “Shocker.”
“At least I don’t tattletale on people even if they completely deserve it!” Brick retorted.
“Tattletale?” Savannah scoffed. “What are you, five? Oh wait. I don’t want to insult five year olds.”
A light buzz from the large monitor interrupted their argument. Savannah furiously hit a red button on the panel to turn it on. Mr. Block appeared on the screen, frowning more than usual.
Well, he was always frowning. So most people didn’t see a difference. Either way, he was the type to suck all sunshine and rainbows out of the room with his presence.
And maybe kick a few puppies while he was at it.
“We have an emergency,” Mr. Block grunted.
Well, second thoughts after a week was better than nothing.
Brick adjusted his bow tie smugly. Savannah wished a truck would smack that stupid smirk off his face. “I’m glad, sir. Who requires diplomatic assistance?”
“Nobody. The Board decided that the agents will have to attend an all day seminar on teamwork,” Mr. Block growled. “The session begins at 9 am tomorrow in the Future Convention Center. Be there or else I’ll remove you both from pistachio duty....”
Well, they could just blow it off then. Savannah didn’t care. She could use a spa day.
“...and put you on chimney cleaning duty.”
Goodbye spa day.
“Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to message Concord and Ohio. I’d like the few moments of peace I get before I have to call those idiots.”
The Future Convention Center was ‘a state of the art, taxpayer-funded facility which encouraged progress in science and the arts’.
At least, that’s what they said.
Most people tended to leave out the part that it was created from the shell of a haunted football stadium.
The memo specified that field equipment wouldn’t be needed, so Savannah had stored her shield, watches, grappling gun, and jewelry inside a locker at the Bureau. She felt so much lighter now that she didn’t have to carry around all that junk.
She was waved through the metal detector with no issues.
Unfortunately, she had to wait on Brick, who set off the metal detectors ten times and counting as he tried to smuggle his equipment past security.
“Brick! Just empty your pockets!” she yelled impatiently. “What were you doing in the Bureau earlier while I was in the locker room?”
Brick shrugged as best he could while security grew fed up and took him aside for a full body pat-down. “They finally had an instant coffee machine installed so I took full advantage. I don’t function if I don’t have caffeine.”
Savannah thought Brick’s brain never functioned in general.
The security team confiscated a total of five laser watches, three tasers, a Nokia, and a grappling gun from Brick’s person. Everything was tossed on the large pile of stuff that had been taken as Brick went through the metal detectors.
“We would’ve been in already if you’d read the memo,” Savannah muttered.
“We could’ve snuck past security if you hadn’t taken so long in the Bureau,” Brick shot back.
The day had barely started and she was already regretting her life choices.
There was a distinct lack of Cavendish and Dakota. As the inspirational speaker talked about friendship and teamwork and some other junk, Savannah scanned the audience for them.
Then that thought was discarded when Mr. Block and his assistant, Gretchen, plopped down in the seats next to her. “What are you doing here?” Savannah asked.
Mr. Block sighed heavily. “Supervising officers were also required to attend. Unfortunately.” He tossed a crumpled up ball of notebook paper on her lap.
Savannah glared at him for the blatant disrespect. Sulking, she unfolded the paper to reveal a neatly written note from Cavendish.
We will not be in attendance due to unforeseen circumstances. Give my regards to the Bureau.
-Cavendish
Then Savannah saw the bottom portion, which was written in a messy scrawl.
Soy milk, grapes, frozen mozzarella sticks, wait this is the note Cavendish was sending ignore this part!
-Dakota
She never thought she’d be envious of those two. She made a mental note to ask how they blew off Bureau company events with such practiced ease.
Finally, the inspirational speaker finished and they broke off into groups.
Savannah was definitely not going to survive being on a team that included Brick and Mr. Block. She withheld judgment on Gretchen for now.
Tortured through elementary school field day events. They were getting downright diabolical.
A mud pit and a long rope. Perfect. Just perfect.
This was not the type of dirty work listed in her job description.
The instructor wrote something on a clipboard. His overly cheery T-shirt was ridiculous. Bureau employees should always have at least have some level of class.
She counted Cavendish and Dakota under ‘time traveling janitors’, so they didn’t qualify.
“Welcome to your first team building exercise!” he exclaimed. “My name is Carlos and I’m sure we’ll be able to salvage your professional relationship with your assigned partner. So to start off, we’ll begin with tug o’war. Best out of three wins!”
Best out of three rock-paper-scissors would’ve preserved some of her dignity.
“The rules are simple,” Carlos said.
Savannah rolled her eyes at the pointless explanation. They knew what the objective was.
“But there’s one additional rule. The partner in front must sing ‘What’s gonna work?’ and the partner in back sings ‘teamwork’ back. This will help synchronize you!”
“Hold it! Since when do we have to sing?” Brick complained. “I didn’t sign up for this!”
She had lost her taste for spontaneous singing and dancing when she witnessed Dakota’s...interesting rendition of the Bohemian Rhapsody at the karaoke night years ago.
“There was nothing in the memo about singing,” Savannah added.
Carlos shrugged. “The Board didn’t want us to put that bit in because they actually wanted people to show up.”
Maybe she could file an appeal with a federal court and claim the Board was enforcing cruel and unusual punishment.
“But enough talking! Let’s begin!” Carlos exclaimed. Savannah beat Brick to the back end of the rope, leaving him to grumble as he took he took the front end. If they lost, she could at least land on Brick and minimize the amount of mud on her clothes. On the other side, Mr. Block ordered Gretchen to take the front. “Go!”
Savannah tugged hard, feeling the rope tighten in her grasp. She took a step back, the rope sliding towards their end. Mr. Block and Gretchen should have been no match for field agents, being stuck behind desk jobs all day.
But it appeared they had some level of physical prowess, since the rope pulled towards them. Her feet slid forward.
“Brick! Pull harder!” Savannah hissed.
“I’m pulling as hard as I can!” Brick grunted.
“I don’t hear singing from either side!” Carlos called.
“What’s gonna work?” Gretchen said flatly.
“Winning and not dying no matter how much we want to,” Mr. Block responded.
Knowing it was a losing battle, Savannah decided to take this loss gracefully and dropped the rope, allowing Brick to plop in the mud pit by himself. “You did that on purpose!” Brick spat out a glob of mud, wheezing from the impact.
Savannah shrugged. “Can’t prove it though.”
“Gretchen, can you tell them why they lost?” Carlos asked.
Gretchen adjusted her glasses. “Because Newton’s Third Law dictates that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.”
“Nope!” Carlos shook his head. “It’s because they didn’t sing the teamwork song!”
“I refuse,” Savannah said. “I’ll take the losses now. Call me when the next event comes along.” She sat on a nearby bench and watched everyone but Gretchen proceed to make fools of themselves.
Ten minutes later, Carlos was wiping mud off his hair. “Well, I’d say that was successful! Feeling closer yet?”
Brick glared at him. “I was dropped into the mud pit twice because she bailed on me! How is that supposed to help?”
“Better you than me,” Mr. Block said, wiping a very miniscule amount of mud off his uniform.
Gretchen toweled herself off, not seeming to care about the situation at all.
“Moving on!” Carlos clapped his hands eagerly. Savannah stood up, ignoring the death glare Brick leveled at her. “For the second event, each of you will learn the value of teamwork and cooperation. This way we can prevent strife within the organization and behave civilly towards our coworkers!”
It better not be another field day event, Savannah thought.
“You’ll be playing Mario Party!”
Certain scenes have been cut from the story because the Bureau of Time Travel wishes to cover up the carnage that ensued because some idiots fought over who got to pick Yoshi. No details shall be given about the actual game. The author has been sworn to secrecy or else be forced to listen to the 10 hour version of the Meow Mix commercial.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
Carlos had been sent to therapy immediately following the disastrous game of Mario Party. Poor naive man had to live with the consequences for the rest of his days.
Savannah developed an opinion on Gretchen: ruthless, unforgiving, and Mr. Block was child’s play compared to her efficiency. How she was only an assistant was anyone’s guess.
Without a spare instructor, there was nobody to lead them on team-building exercises, so Savannah and Brick hightailed it out of there as quickly as possible.
On the bright side, Savannah didn’t have to put up with Brick complaining about his stuff getting confiscated anymore.
