So you thought I was really gone? Poor old Bunny! But I hope Mackenzie saw your face?" "He did," said I. I would not tell him all Mackenzie must have seen, however. "That's all right. I wouldn't have had him miss it for worlds; and you mustn't think me a brute, old boy, for I fear that man, and, know, we sink or swim together." -The Return Match
poor old bunny indeed :( he had a rough day :(

Who here likes ✨crime✨??
This Ides of March, make it special by not only stabbing Caesar 23 times, but by robbing from the rich for the sake of the poor. Or, at least, reading gay stories about it.
The Raffles Stories were written by E. W. Hornung in the early 1900s-10s, following the felonious exploits of AJ Raffles and his besotted chronicler, Bunny Manders. You can read all of these excellent stories, conveniently delivered to your email inbox for free, by subscribing to the Letters From Bunny Substack. The first story, The Ides of March will start the series off on, as you may have guessed, March 15th, otherwise known as our favorite Tumblr holiday. More information can be found at the link below:
💎🏏💎
I hope you will consider subscribing if you have not yet. Cheers to the death of Caesar! 🗡️

“It might have been Bertie who took all those things from the very start,” suggested the little brute hopefully. “He may be like Raffles.”
“Raffles?”
“He’s a chap in a book who went about pinching things.”
CROSSOVER EVENT
Also obsessed with the origin of the gentleman thief genre being described as “chap who went about pinching things”

One of his hands fell kindly on my shoulder, while the other slipped into my overcoat pocket, and I suffered him to deprive me of my weapon without a murmur. Nor was this simply because Raffles had the subtle power of making himself irresistible at will.
You guys, uh, weren’t exaggerating, were you

It's been a while since I read Raffles' Ides of March short story, and I not a day has gone by on which I haven't thought of this image:
Tumblr media
It's so homoerotically suggestive. Raffles is literally on his knees, head and forearms bare. Bunny is standing so close behind him, leaving over to Raffles like he's either going to whisper in his ear or kiss his neck, and a bottle of oil is literally in his hand. It's so damn easy to come up with captions for this art. I'm offering you a few:
"Bunny, I didn't bring the oil for THAT porpose!"
"You don't need to go on creating holes, Raffles, I have already a perfect one for you to use"
"I have no time for horny bunnies now, dear, can't you see that I'm busy?"
"You really enjoy being occupied with holes, aren't you, Raffles?"
"I'm really good at slipping inside, Raffles, would you care for a demonstration?"

The Raffles story collections - a quick guide
The Raffles stories are split into three short story collections and a full-length novel. In the order we are covering them:
The Amateur Cracksman: Eight short stories originally published in 1899.
The Black Mask: Another eight short stories published in 1901.
Mr. Justice Raffles: The 1909 full-length novel and the last work Hornung wrote featuring Raffles.
A Thief in the Night: Ten short stories from 1905.
Hornung also did two plays:
Raffles, The Amateur Cracksman: From 1903, based on "Gentlemen and Players" but considerably expanded to a four-act work.
A Visit From Raffles: More of an extended comic sketch, this is a single-act version of "A Costume Piece", much simplified.

He was that terrible type, the Silly Cynic, his aim a caustic commentary on all things and all men, his achievement mere vulgar irreverence and unintelligent scorn.
Yeah, I'm familiar with the type.

The Ides of March, part 1
Hey everybody, it's Raffles time! Here are thoughts and noodlings about the first Letter from Bunny.
(nb, this is a reread for me, I am going to talk about these stories like I've read them before, there may be spoilers for future events, so my random thoughts go behind a cut.)
Thing 1: I love the way Bunny remains stuck on the idea that he is in total disgrace and that everyone (including Raffles) will treat him that way the minute they know he's written a bad check, while Raffles absolutely does not care about Bunny writing him a bad check - he has skipped over that entirely and gone straight into problem-solving mode.
Thing 2: "You used to be a literary little cuss," he says, like he doesn't have bits of Bunny's terrible schoolboy poetry memorized, the complete and utter nerd.
Thing 3:
...had fear or horror flown to my companion's face, I shudder to think I might have died diabolically happy with that look for my last impious consolation. It was the look that came instead which held my hand. Neither fear nor horror were in it; only wonder, admiration, and such a measure of pleased expectancy as caused me after all to pocket my revolver with an oath. "You devil!" I said. "I believe you wanted me to do it!" "Not quite," was the reply, made with a little start, and a change of color that came too late. "To tell you the truth, though, I half thought you meant it, and I was never more fascinated in my life..."
Raffles over here all, "I have been (unconsciously) trying to kill myself by engaging in wildly reckless and dangerous behavior for years now and this little rabbit is just going to go all the way and shoot himself right now in front of me. Fucking wild. I must immediately adopt him and find out what other crazy stuff he's willing to do."
Thing 4: It says something about how overwhelmingly gay these stories are that I had forgotten that Raffles just casually puts his hand into Bunny's pocket in the very first scene of this story.
Thing 5: "What a boy it is for jumping to conclusions!" Genuinely Bunny's besetting sin.
Thing 6: I love the couple of little moments where Raffles is pacing and thinking and almost says something to Bunny but then stops himself - figuring out the proper approach on this newest shiny thing he's decided to steal for himself. (The proper approach is, obviously: 1) get Bunny drunk, 2) compliments and flattery, 3) outrageous boldfaced lying. Works every time.)
Thing 7:
"He must be a very intimate friend!" "Intimate's not the word. I have the run of his place and a latch-key all to myself." "You would knock him up at this hour of the night?" "If he's in bed."
Bunny thinks this is about a very different kind of crime, you know? Like, he absolutely thinks he's being invited to some sort of weird sex thing, right? (I mean, he's not entirely wrong...)

Very excited to start reading the Raffles and Bunny stories via @lettersfrombunny! I have zero background beyond being told it was slashy, and from the first section of the first story, can definitely confirm. (And so dramatic!!)
I had already gotten the (correct) impression that Bunny is extremely smitten with Raffles ("I see his indolent, athletic figure; his pale, sharp, clean-shaven features; his curly black hair; his strong, unscrupulous mouth." But who's looking?) but consider me extremely intrigued by how Raffles treats Bunny.
Raffles is so familiar and dismissive in how he refers to Bunny - starting with calling him Bunny, for one. And he's a "a literary little cuss", "a plucky little devil". "You were the right sort of little beggar then, Bunny; you didn’t talk and you didn’t flinch." Whew!
I'm so curious to see how things develop - if Raffles just keeps leading Bunny around by the nose, I will eat that up with a spoon just like Bunny himself, but I will also be happy to read some affection there. Despite their hierarchical relationship at school, Raffles answered Bunny's "Is there any chance you remember me from school (I was in love with you)" with fond commentary about what he was like and what they did. Just how much is actual fondness vs being happy to take advantage of Bunny's submissiveness agreeableness remains to be seen. I'll be happy either way!

Things that I expected:
Bunny being more active in this plan.
Raffles telling more details of the plan to Bunny.
Things that I didn't expect:
Bunny struggling to keep a conversation.
Raffles making a copy of the picture.
Congrats on your first burglary alone, Bunny!
