#TBT to a few weeks ago when I competed in what I hope is the first of many #DonnaPurkeyClassic bonspiels. @CoyotesCurling was the first time I ever experienced dedicated ice and it was nice to be able to continue the tradition by bringing a mostly newbie @curlsandiego team to the competition. I thought I gave a thorough enough briefing and set realistic expectations as skip & most experienced member of the squad, but there were still some surprises like order during the opening ceremonies, the talent show, & posing for pictures. Lots to build on moving forward. Extremely grateful to the Divas who took the time to coach us - it helped immensely and we almost pulled off the comeback in game 4. Loved how they had commemorative patches too. I definitely want to make it an annual thing and collect patches. . . Speaking of the talent show, the only other team signed up for it bailed so it basically turned into @curlsandiego serving as dinner entertainment while the professional musician takes a break at the bar. I’m glad folks enjoyed the informative “book report presentation” that Misty & Stephanie helped with (I made the board in my hotel room) & enough curlers got the humor of the song parody I performed despite the original song being Taylor Swift’s Blank Space. I’m a big #swiftie & the biggest @teamniklasedin fan so I just leaned on that fully. LOL one of the tables made the comment “I sense a theme here” midway through the presentation & there were lots of chuckles as inside jokes and curling memes were uttered during the song (Malört, YouTube chats, lack of ice access in arena clubs, & Glenn Howard never retiring, etc). FINALLY got to wear my new @teamhasselborg uniform from @runbackcurling to @curlsandiego My women’s team is competing at the Donna Purkey Classic in Arizona next weekend so we did the pickup game against a mixed team w/ 2 male sweepers for practice during the Learn To Curl. I really wanted Elaine to learn how to be the #skip but she didn’t feel comfortable throwing last rocks so she threw third & made one of the guys throw last rocks. #PimpSanta and one of his reindeer 🎅 Congrats to Austin for winning Best Costume at #ReindeerGames this weekend. I still don’t know how he curled 10 ends in that outfit. Thank you Andrew, Ian, and Geoff for being on my team for Reindeer Games. Ian is such a homie not only for wearing an ugly holiday sweater but for letting me put deer makeup on him 👍 We had a rough first half but came back super strong in the second half. #FBF to last weekend when my team won league 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 Happy that this time it’s official official - Andrew & I firmly believe we technically won last season by default due to attendance (games should’ve been Ws for us due to automatic forfeits by opponents for not having enough players on their team). I really hope this is me turning a new leaf both as a skip & a curler in general. The winning shot was a draw through the port to the 4ft that Owen was unable to beat. I was the only female skip this league so it means a lot to come out on top. Sadly, Curl SD moved away from handing out league trophies a couple of years ago. Maybe one day the hardware will be back & I’ll continue to win 😉 It really helped a lot that Josh was there as a sub - having 2 sweepers makes a big difference in league games, even more so when you have 2 strong men sweeper, which has me hopeful for tomorrow’s Reindeer Games since my 3 teammates are men. It’s not a goodbye, but a so long until we meet again. Earlier today I attended what I’ve been referring to as the SCCC’s last hurrah as they are being evicted out of their current location. For several months I got to experience dedicated ice in SoCal and look forward to when we will have it back again. I ultimately hope CurlSD will have our own facility during my lifetime. Been watching a lot of Kdramas lately & this selfie I took before I left reminded me of a scene from Her Private Life where the two main characters get stranded due to weather and end up spending the night at the house of the keeper of a photographer’s last unpublished work. Competing at the #TacoSpiel2022 this weekend w/ Rob, Misty, Bob, and Andrew. So far we’re up to our usual antics of struggling to get rid of hammer & getting creamed, but it’s been a good learning experience so far - we actually have to do the #LastShotDraw at the end of each game so I’m likely throwing the draw tonight since Andrew and Misty already did it. Also, because the number of teams they’re actually doing pools & we get to play tomorrow for sure. . . In anticipation of the upcoming kickoff to the #curling season for several of the elite teams in Europe in a few days (Baden Masters), I got some #Swiss items to add to my curling closet. I basically only had the #TeamTirinzoni signed jersey from the European Championships and we all know I’m not wearing that because 1) it’s signed and 2) I’d have to be dead several weeks before I’m skinny enough to wear something of Silvana Tirinzoni’s size 😂 Got a #Switzerland jacket and a Swiss bag to support the Swiss teams instead. The bag is the same style as the Sweden and Germany bags I already have. I hope they have other countries so I can keep adding to my curling closet. Survived my first day back after almost a month off. Super happy it was a game of no consequence since we were handing off the Golden Plunger for sure after ringer sub Rob got the win for us last week. . . Super excited about the funspiel they announced will be at the end of September—it’ll be Oktoberfest themed. You know what that means - I get to wear German gear 🥌❤️🇩🇪 I hope I can get a team for it. They can even borrow from my German curling closet so we can all be reppin Deutschland 😬 Not sure what the future holds for me, I’d like to keep playing and even try mixed doubles, but nobody wants to commit to playing yet… I guess things would be different if I were a better curler and skip, but that’s not the case. I struggle enough on my best days, now I have #postconcussionsyndrome on top of everything else. I wonder if being back on the ice has made my left leg 1/4 inch shorter again and re-aggravated my hip bursitis 🤔 I’m guessing I need to add #concussedcurler to my list of hashtags now. Glad my @DynastyCurling protective headgear finally came. It’s bright AF pink and I love it, though it is a little snug and requires getting used too, and my preference is to not curl w/ my hair down, but #safetyfirst . . Found another headache trigger when driving - Boom Clap by Charli XCX. I’ve removed it along w/ Discoteque from my Drive playlist. Quality time w/ my TENS unit after taking my Rx in hopes of sleeping tonight. Sneak peek at the decorations I added to the #GoldenPlunger 🪠 I texted this pic to the team & Andrew replies with “I’m surprised it’s not a goat” 🤦‍♀️ Bruh, wrong curling club. We’re #dragons in OC 😂 Also, I didn’t have the time or capacity to #crochet a goat because of my injury. Besides, I’ve only made 3 crochet goats. I kept one and the other 2 were gifted to the 🐐 of their respective sports—Katie Ledecky of swimming & Niklas Edin (aka birthday boy). . . I took the shortcut and bought the dragon iron on patch. I also sacrificed one of my 3 #Daenerys dragon eggs from my #GameOfThrones themed holiday door at work. I unraveled it and only used about half of the original egg because I didn’t want to be obnoxious AF and take up most of the plunger’s handle (gotta leave room in case I end up w/ it again in the future). . . I had PT today & my therapist cracked my back and tried to relieve a lot of the tension there. She was massaging my hip and noticed the vast improvement in the area, and then hit a really tender spot that made me jump. Overall there’s progress and that’s something. Still have lots of medical appointments left to schedule and attend & I have referrals for 3 possible mental health therapists. There have been improvements, but it’s been a difficult journey so far and one I’m likely to on for the next year. My protective headgear is ready. Hope I can play tomorrow. My #protective #headgear from @dynastycurling is FINALLY here!!! It got stuck somewhere near Chicago for like a week or two. So happy I’ll get to finish off Thursday league tomorrow. Well that’s the plan anyway. Not sure exactly how my body will handle playing, but I have to be there either way to return the Golden Plunger. The road to recovery is painful and difficult, but I’m not quitting curling as much as my mom wants me to - I need it for my mental health and sanity. Even the 45-3ish hour drives each way to SD, OC, or the SCCC when I sing along to lots of Taylor Swift songs is good for the soul, even if muscle spasms and back pain start raging at about 90 minutes into a long drive. . . On #Wednesdays we wear pink, but for me, I’ll be wearing #pink on my head whenever I curl for the foreseeable future because #safety first. The overwhelming majority response when I asked what color I should get was pink. I FINALLY have a @scottish_curling uniform to add to my curling closet thanks to the Hollywood Summer Blockbuster Bonspiel silent auction. When it was confirmed that the @cr1ppa & @oggelit jerseys were NOT part of the silent auction, I pivoted to a couple of #Scottish and #American items. I got priced out of the Mouat & Peterson jerseys, and I was never bidding for the signed @teamniklasedin rock - it was at $600 when I got there Saturday afternoon. I’m just gonna buy a rock handle & ask my Icevengers to sign it the next time I see them, whenever that is. Super stoked to now be the owner of a #DavidMurdoch jacket! It’s the first #Foxglide uniform I have too - I only have their face masks (and the uniforms I did order are in progress). Excited to get coach to sign this next time I see him. Now I’ll have something to cheer on Scotland in the future 😜 . . In dealing w/ post-concussion syndrome one of the symptoms I’ve been experiencing has to do w/ jumbling my words - I’m exhibiting dyslexia when typing/writing and butchering words when I speak. I have to purposely try to talk slower especially on multi-syllabic words in an effort to communicate more clearly. The last thing I need is to give more people more reason to think I’m stupid or incompetent. Plenty of those already. The one I tend to butcher the most is MISCONCEPTION, partly because I’ve been saying it so much during the month of June, probably more than I have my entire life. I have to say it in trying to explain or often defend why I was off work or why I’ve disappeared from other things both IRL (like curling & dance) or online (streams & Discord, etc.).
