Today In History Leontyne Price, world-renowned opera singer, and the first African American singer to achieve an international reputation in opera—made her formal debut at the Metropolitan Opera House on this date January 27, 1961. Both of Price’s grandfathers had been Methodist ministers in Black churches in Mississippi, and she sang in her church choir as a girl. Only when she graduated from the College of Education and Industrial Arts (now Central State College) in Wilberforce, Ohio, in 1948 did she decide to seek a career as a singer. She studied for four years at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where she worked under the former concert singer Florence Page Kimball, who remained her coach in later years. Her debut took place in April 1952 in a Broadway revival of Four Saints in Three Acts by Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein. Leontyne Price performance in that production, which subsequently traveled to Paris, prompted Ira Gershwin to choose her to sing the role of Bess in his revival of Porgy and Bess, which played in New York City from 1952 to 1954 and then toured the United States and Europe. The year 1955 saw her triumphant performance of the title role in the National Broadcasting Company’s television production of Tosca, and she sang leading roles in other operas on television in the next few years. “From muddy Mississippi to the magnificence of the Metropolitan Opera #LeontynePrice just celebrated her 96th birthday on February 10. Her magisterial presence is a gift as much as her voice is a phenomenon. Like fellow Missippians Medgar Evers, Mrs Fannie Lou Hamer, Ida B. Wells, Dr Eddie Glaude Jr, Richard Wright, Oprah Winfrey, Walter Payton, and Margaret Walker, Ms Price has shined on the national and international stage. Salute and blessed birthday to this radiant lady.” William Gipson (at Laurel, Mississippi) https://www.instagram.com/p/ComdsBvLQKKHd6QX3Kv_srh2mSp2cRrXRQPzFQ0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Mary Violet Leontyne Price (born February 10, 1927) is an American soprano. Born and raised in Laurel, Mississippi, she rose to international acclaim in the 1950s and 1960s, and was the first African American to become a leading performer at the Metropolitan Opera, and one of the most popular American classical singers of her generation. Reviewing her televised farewell opera performance at the Met in 1985, as Aida, one critic described Price's voice as "vibrant," "soaring" and "a Price beyond pearls". Time magazine called her voice "Rich, supple and shining, it was in its prime capable of effortless soaring from a smoky mezzo to the pure soprano gold of a perfectly spun high C." A lirico spinto (Italian for "pushed lyric") soprano, she was considered especially well suited to the heroines of Verdi's "middle period" operas: Aida, the Leonoras of Il trovatore and La forza del destino, and Amelia in Un ballo in maschera. She also was noted for her interpretations of leading roles in operas by Giacomo Puccini and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. After her retirement from opera, she continued to appear in recitals and orchestral concerts until 1997. Among her many honors and awards are the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1964), the Spingarn Medal (1965), the Kennedy Center Honors (1980), the National Medal of Arts (1985), the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement (1986), numerous honorary degrees, and 19 Grammy Awards for operatic and song recitals and full operas, and a Lifetime Achievement Award, more than any other classical singer. In October 2008, she was among the first recipients of the Opera Honors by the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2019, Leontyne Price was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Boston Conservatory at Berklee. *source wikipedia #blackhistorymonth #leontyneprice #sopranosinger #singer https://www.instagram.com/p/CLM0oteAzXN/?igshid=nk76f2q2pjci

When I think of the term diva, honey these ladies come to mind. Spinto soprano Leontyne Price, the late Shirley Verrett, Grace Bumbry, and Jessye Norman. (Verrett and Bumbry started as mezzo sopranos and moved into the dramatic soprano Fach, albeit in her latter years Bumbry went back to mezzo soprano). Norman has sung mezzo soprano and soprano parts exceptionally well. #opera #leontyneprice #shirleyverrett #gracebumbry #jessyenorman (at McIntyre, Georgia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs4u7FfDgyhpluP1mGav1xbYA4BlX0Rwc7-Qcg0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1r5h5gx5xdkct

#Repost @articulatedvinyl ・・・ Porgy and Bess was an ahead-of-its-time opera composed by Gershwin, written by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin and was adapted by another play named Porgy, based on Heyward's novel of the same name. The story is a tale of disabled black street beggar, Porgy, attempting to save Bess from her drug dealer, Sportin' Life. The first performance was in 1935 by classically trained African-American singers, which of course at the time, didn't receive the highest of public opinions. But times changed and the story kept being told and eventually gained the recognition it rightfully deserved with its latest iteration being in London in 2014. This recording is based off the 1952 cast, with Leontyne Price as Bess and William Warfield as Porgy. And here, we have Wonder Woman giving Superman the cold shoulder, because he waited all week to figure out a way to tell her Avengers Infinity War grossed as much in its first weekend as Justice League did in its entire run. Someone's in the dog house. And can I just say how cool of a name is McHenry Boatwright??? #gershwin #porgyandbess #leontyneprice #williamwarfield #opera #dccomics #wonderwoman #superman #mchenryboatwright #skitchhenderson

A very #HappyBirthday to one of my biggest early influences and an icon of #OperaHistory and #BlackHistory. 92 years old and still a diva to the core, Leontyne Price is and will always be an absolute legend. Known as the first #AfricanAmerican #primadonna of the @metopera, her debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York in January, 1961, was as Leonora in Il Trovatore. The standing ovation lasted 42 minutes!!!!Quickly becoming a leading soprano there, Leontyne Price made the Met her primary base until her retirement in 1985. She was the fifth black singer in the Met’s opera company, and the first to really achieve stardom there. Happy birthday, Queen Diva Mother and thank you for the 🎶!! #blackhistorymonth #leontyneprice #happybirthdayleontyneprice #artseducationmatters #sopranosofinstagram #standingovation https://www.instagram.com/p/Btw0p4IB04D/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=wwok8txajoly
