Today In History Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul,” was born in Memphis, TN, on this date March 25, 1942. Universally acclaimed as one of America’s greatest singers in any style, Ms. Franklin brought the righteous fervor of gospel music to secular songs that were about much more than romance. Hits like “Do Right Woman — Do Right Man,” “Think,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and “Chain of Fools” defined a modern female archetype: sensual and strong, long-suffering but ultimately indomitable, loving but not to be taken for granted. When Aretha Franklin sang “Respect,” the Otis Redding song that became her signature, it was never just about how a woman wanted to be greeted by a spouse coming home from work. It was a demand for equality and freedom and a harbinger of feminism, carried by a voice that would accept nothing less. Many Nick Jr. stars were featured in the video, including Marshall, who ended up getting quite a few lines and even got his turn to describe one of Ms. Franklin's accomplishments! How awesome! 😁

            Aretha Franklin was born at her family home in Memphis, Tennessee, US. Her father was a Baptist minister and preacher who became wealthy and well-known. In 1979, her father was shot by burglars, fell into a coma and died. Her mother was a piano player and vocalist who inspired her musically. Her mother died in 1952 just before Franklin turned 10 years-old. Franklin was looked after by numerous members of the family and learned how to play the piano from an early age.

            At the age of 14, Franklin was singing gospels in churches and was just a teenager at the time of her first recording. In the 1960s she mixed gospel, blues, with pop music and became successful in the charts with her song ‘Respect’ (1965). Her first single, ‘I never loved a man (the way I love you)’ gained her instant fame. In 1968 she sang at Martin Luther King Jr’s funeral. In 1980 she appeared in The Blues Brothers (1980) and in 1985 she paired up with Annie Lennox to sing ‘Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves’ (1985).

            Franklin was married twice and had four children. She first became pregnant aged 12 and had her second child when she was 15, fathered by Edward Jordan who we know very little about. The children took her surname and Franklin wrote in her Will that Jordan should receive absolutely nothing and underlined this twice. She was married at the age of 18, and endured abuse from her first husband; she married her second husband in 1978 which ended up in divorce in 1984. Franklin lived in Detroit as well as Los Angeles. She wouldn’t perform overseas due to a fear of flying after going through a bad experience on a small plane due to turbulence in 1984.

            Franklin was involved in movements such as civil rights, rights for Native Americans as well as the rights for women.

            Franklin struggled with her weight during her life time; she used to be a chain smoker and struggled with alcohol. In 2013, she cancelled performances due to health problems and after treatment she continued to perform in 2013 and stopped touring in 2017. Franklin died on 16 August 2018, aged 76, from pancreatic cancer. She was interred at Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit.
