For the last two weeks I've been participating in a series of scheduled conversations at work centered around race and policies in the workplace and how it intersects with the outside world. It isn't shocking to me that the view from those at the top is so clouded by privilege that they are blind to the fact that the marginalized people at the bottom cannot simply just separate themselves from the social injustices that are woven into every aspect of their existence. I am inspired by the voices that continue to speak up and speak truth to power. But I can't help but wonder how different these conversations would be if there was true knowledge, knowledge of self first followed by knowledge of others. The veil would be lifted and people can truly see each other. How do we learn to see others in a meaningful way? Let's start by decolonizing our shelves. What we ingest consistently becomes our frame of reference. You cannot expand your thinking, if you put your mind in a box. Reading diversely all year long: ¤ allows exploration of identity and other cultures ¤ brings visibility and validation to cultures different than our own ¤ builds community, inclusivity and unity ¤ creates opportunity to talk about current events ¤ emphasizes similarities and helps you draw connections #LatinxHeritageMonth #latinxreader #latinxbookstagram #diversereader #decolonizereading #bookdragon #readingislearning #readingislife #weneeddiversebooks #bookworm #latinxbookstagramtour #ownvoices #bibliophile #knowledgeispower #readlatinxallyearlong #latinxIG #bookishthoughts #booknerdlife (at The Shops at Atlas Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFf3v5jA5ag/?igshid=3hqqhns5w2ax

¿A dónde he ido a parar? ¿En qué isla he naufragado? Via • @dominicanwriters This platform celebrates our Latino/Dominican books all day everyday 24/7. Nevertheless we are still celebrating Latino Heritage month and have joined @lupita.reads and other bookstagrammers in in doing so! Check out the amazing list & hit the follow button! #repost @lupita.reads ・・・ I am thrilled to share that the #latinxbookstagramtour is back for its 3rd consecutive year! These are all-new Latinx bookish accounts ready to share their Latinx book recommendations & experiences with connecting to Latinx literature. For those of you new to the tour, I initially created it in 2018 to highlight & amplify Latinx Book Recommendations by amazing Latinx Bookish Folx. The tour personally means so much to me. I’ve discovered that celebrating Latinx bookish accounts reminds me that existing loudly and visibly as a Latinx reader is more than just “enough.” It’s necessary. Especially as we enter into an election year with a misrepresentation of the vast spectrum of the Latinx lived experience. Reading is and will always be political. So please follow the hashtag & my stories because I will be sharing each Latinx book recommendation every day from all these amazing accounts. My hope is you’ll discover amazing Latinx accounts & fill your TBR with Latinx books to read all year long! If you are looking to help the tour out-sharing these bookish accounts & recommendations would be amazing! This year the tour added two special author events & we will also be launching prompts for non-Latinx readers to join us as well as giveaways with publishers. So much greatness this year! Huge thank you @idleutopia_reads for co-hosting the tour with me this year. #latinobooks #dominicanbooks #latinoreaders #dominicanreaders #storytellers #cuentacuentos https://www.instagram.com/p/CFQVF1CJbe1/?igshid=tph693uc87mm

#Latinxbookstagramtour Stop "El caserio was where I learned about danger and violence and death, but it was also where I learned about community"- Jaquira Diaz, Ordinary Girls For me owning my Latinidad has always been complicated. So much of who I am is woven in my DNA being born to Puerto Rican natives but much of what formed my identity was shaped by the Latinx community where I grew up in NYC. It is hard to be told you don't look Puerto Rican because you have full lips, you don't have the right hair texture, you don't sound the right way and your accent is too Brooklyn and too American. The statements that sting the most for me were the ones that made me feel like I would never be good enough because I was from the "hood" and Latinx girls from the "hood" are only good for one thing. But my story isn't unique, it is the story of many of us Ordinary Girls, girls with dreams, girls who have seen and faced unspeakable things, girls who've had to fight every day to prove our worth, girls who have fought to have a voice and girls who've kicked down walls to be seen as ourselves and not just as exotic creatures to be consumed. Growing up in the "hood" surrounded with a diverse community of Latinx people taught me how to be resilient, how to be strong, how to make my own way and how to make something out of nothing. But most importantly, growing up Latinx taught me how to laugh loudly, how to love fiercely and how to live proudly and unapologetic. I am who I am because of the Latinx community that took the time to see past what society saw and spoke life into me by introducing me to books where I would see myself reflected and bring me hope for the future. To me, my Latinidad is transformative. I reinvent it every day and that is the beauty of Latinidad. Stories have always been my escape from the noise. The stories that draw me in are the stories of ordinary girls (people) just like me, who come from neighborhoods just like mine and who walk through fire to be seen, stories of finding beauty in every day things and dreaming bigger than your surroundings. Stories remind me that the world can never define us and more importantly that we continue to overcome (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CF2YlK0ARUx/?igshid=1a01h34r8wpkh
