Well, flubbed doing my thing of the day posts for, oh, almost the entire month of November. And there I'd been thinking I might actually make it a full year successfully (well, successful enough, there were a few times I missed it for several days and then had to catch up).
I missed it. Not so much doing of it, but being able to check back on things like when I last cooked particular meals for supper, or just how many days (or how few) the latest loaf of bread managed to survive, or when I'd last did different non-daily chores.
So, yeah, first day of December, first day of resuming my Thing of the Day posts. I'll also need to restart my count for managing to keep it up for at least a year straight.
Tumblr media
December 1 - Picked up some ebooks on sale, including both of Robert Silverberg's Majipoor trilogies, which have been on my wishlist for years but were waaaay more expensive per volume than I wanted to spend on just replacing books I already own in dead tree form. But with four of the six dropped to the ~$2 range? You damn betcha I got the full set of both. I've mentally tagged that for a re-read some time later this month - it's been over a decade.
Ran about half of my monthly backups today, still need to dig out the drives from my emergency go bag to update them as well.
Also, finally dusted off LotRO and tried out the new Mariner class, in addition to popping for the new River Hobbit race, because they can be mariners and I didn't feel like rolling another man, high elf, or stout-axe dwarf when there was a shiny new racial option (well, new as of August just past).
She turned out very pretty. Named her Windolen (after the usual dozen or so attempts to find a name that wasn't already in use by someone else):
Tumblr media
The new hobbits have a ton of facial adjustment sliders that prior races didn't have, plus a lot of new hair styles, including a whole pile of braided/cornrow/wavy ones, which is always nice to see. I'm kind of hoping they have the ability (and decide to) retrofit the existing player character models with the new adjustment sliders. And some new hairstyles. Which yeah would be a lot of work to put in on a game that was released 15+ years back (and was in development starting a fair few years prior to that) but it would be nice to have the option.
Made a very simple supper of oven fries and chicken fingers (rather than a pork roast I was originally planning on doing), as my brother is doing plumbing work and this afternoon asked me not to use the kitchen sink until after he replaces its drain pipe tomorrow. So, meal that didn't need water usage, nor generated much in the way of dishes to sit around until the sink is back in commission.

Cornrows offer one of the most popular, cool and trendy hairstyles for black women. These cornrow styles can be simple, natural, classic, modern, sexy, big, small and just about everything in between. To help you see the latest trending braid styles, here are the best cornrow braids to get this year. From box braids to straight back rows, these cornrow hairstyles will transform your look and truly let your hair shine!
Tumblr media
Cornrow Braid Styles
Big Cornrow Braids
There are many benefits of the big cornrow style of braids: they are easy to maintain, the strands of hair are thicker and therefore take less time to braid. Best of all, cornrow braided hairstyles just look amazing. These braid styles are a bold approach to a classic hairstyle for black women, and can be dressed up with accessories or left bare for a more natural feel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Side Cornrow Braids
Like the lemonade locks that Beyonce has been known to rock, side cornrow braids are stylish, cool, and come with a lot of versatility. Braid the side of the head for a dramatic undercut, or add thicker braids to the smaller cornrows. Either way, you will dazzle with the diversity that this braided hairstyle offers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two Cornrow Braids
Tumblr media
Sometimes referred to as box braids for the boxy shape they provide, the two cornrow braids are a timeless style that emit power and confidence. The look is achieved by an underhand braiding method that stays close to the scalp and separates the hair into two thicker braids. Whether you’re going for athletic or stylish, you can’t go wrong with this two-strand method.
Tumblr media
Cornrow Braids with Natural Hair
Embrace cornrows with natural hair. Add a few cornrow braids into the mix and feel free to show off your hair sans treatment and without being straightened. Get creative and experiment with small and big braided hair with thick curly Afro hair for a contrast. There are many ways to approach this look, including small side cornrows, a faux undercut, or a tiny faux hawk.
Tumblr media
Two Cornrow Braids with Extensions
Add a little extra length to the aforementioned box braids. Two cornrow braids with extensions are a fun style to further show off your facial features and give off a sexy and sultry vibe. The extensions make this braided look even more eye-catching, further separating you from the crowd.
Four Cornrow Braids
The four cornrow braids look is a throwback to the classic African interpretation of plaiting hair. It involves working the braids up your head, and can be modified by playing with the angle of the braiding. You can stick with the simple and successful recipe, which is braiding the hair all at the same angle, or add a modern twist by keeping the sides straight. The variation of cornrows keeps them both interesting and traditional.
Tumblr media
Five Cornrow Braids
You don’t have to stop with four – add dimension and another section for the five cornrow braids look. You can braid all of your hair or opt to leave some of your hair out and curly, starting from the nape of the neck. This half-up-half down style is great to show a mix of texture and femininity.

That's why her hair's so big
(Related to this and has a sequel)
It was time for Mirabel to make a delivery into town and Camilo is sticking close. Abuela had layed into him for his latest excursion in the town and he was still cringing from the scolding talking about how unfair it was.
Personally Mirabel thought that Camilo could be a little mean and didn't know when to stop but the last time she had said that when they were kids he had cried so she kept it to herself.
Mirabel loved her primo though. She remembered her Quince which wasn't too long ago, she had felt like a princess.
It was one of the few times Dolores had let her choose her own dress. Her prima did her makeup and braided her hair beautifully around her tiara.
When Roberto who was a known heartbreaker asked her to dance she agreed. When he had gone in for a kiss (she wouldn't have minded if he had asked first) Camilo was on him completely. He ripped Roberto away and threw him on the ground and they started to tussle.
Privately that was the cherry on top for the party. She had wanted the kiss because Maya from her class had told her that you officially become a lady on your Quince when you got a kiss. (Mirabel later found out that was a lie) But she much preferred the adrenaline when the adults separated the two.
Abuela was mad but Tío Felix had cracked up. Camilo didn't get in any real trouble and the party lasted till 2am.
Mirabel was done with the party a lot sooner than that but it still remains her favorite birthday.
Her and Camilo were close and she wanted to comfort him but not right now.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm making a delivery to Señor Lopez."
Mirabel quickly made out of the house, her headache sharpening from both Dolores's words and her hands.
Sometime when Mirabel turned 13 Dolores had decided she was old enough to keep secrets.
Real secrets.
Mirabel hadn’t thought about just how much Dolores kept to herself until her prima started telling her things she'd never told anyone.
It came out in a rush like she just couldn’t hold it in any longer.
Now every once in a while Dolores will pull Mirabel aside and tell her things she'd never repeat. Awful things about her neighbors and nasty words that would never pass her lips.
To make up for the time, Dolores would do her hair. The juicier the secret the more ostentatious the hairstyle.
Dolores would take out her box of accessories and whatever she stuck in Mirabel’s hair was hers to keep.
“Never repeat this to anyone.” Dolores would whisper as she tightly braided Mirabel’s hair as if to physically force the words into her skull.
Earlier that morning Dolores had pulled her to the side and whispered a vile secret about the Lopez’s and adorned Mirabel’s hair with jeweled butterfly clips.
The interlocking cornrows ached and the metal decorations were heavy on her head, but not as heavy as the secret.
After a particularly foul secret that landed a genuine gold hair pin in Mirabel’s possession, Dolores asked if Mirabel wanted to stop.
Stop the fancy hairstyles, stop the pseudo gifts, stop the secret girl time.
Mirabel had said no.
Though it made her ears prick with shame, Mirabel was not above gossip or special attention.
Mirabel did not want Camilo to see that she couldn’t look any of the Lopez family in the eye.
“Ah, Mirabel, your hair looks lovely.”
You wouldn’t say that if you knew what it took to get it
That night Mirabel carefully placed her “illicit good” into a steadily filling jewelry box and hid it behind her dresser to join her multiple others.

In regards to your latest post, did you read the part where it was stated that Li'l Shang (the poor kid's name is cringy as hell) has a hip hop career and a solo album coming out. Also, I did some research and I found out that Chinese kids who were named after their parents or elders is considered disrespectful, so imagine Jr being bullied severely because of his name. I feel like Disney doesn't know or care about Asian, specifically Chinese characters. What do you think?
Not gonna lie, given I'm not Chinese and I go off uh, what other people have been saying and basically research I had to do in the past for fics, its kinda hard to say what I think? Like, its definitely bad representation all around- as @ishiphumasohard pointed out, Lonnie's designs aren't even influenced by Chinese culture but instead, Japanese....which means Descendants really mashed up Asian cultures just....just because Google wasn't around or you know, a Chinese person to ask I guess.... And then you got the obvious problem: Lonnie's name. Lonnie's name is obviously not Chinese and instead, German/American, which is a little weird cause....that means they had to google names and found Lonnie but....apparently googling Chinese names was hard??? And like, in regards to D1 still, you also got....Lonnie's hair. Aka when they introduce her, she's got a pretty good short hairstyle that is at least dark haired like Lonnie's actress....but then Mal's spell makes the hair look more 'perfect', aka standard curls and....light brown hair.....yeah, to say D1 failed Lonnie is an understatement.
And in D2....they at least gave her her dark hair back, since actress is finally free from Descendants wigs.....but then they, um, gave her cornrows.....which as pointed out by @harriyanna , isn't made for non-black people cause it will fuck up the hair, and in terms of Descendants history with Black People, is basically giving a non-black girl....a black hairstyle....cause just a simple braid that wouldn't fuck up the actresses hair was hard, I guess. And like, they dis-respect Mulan HARD really in this franchise....which isn't hard, if your not Mal, your guaranteed to be disrespected somehow, but still- remember how in D2 we got gendered sports suddenly??? Why is that??? Ignoring Queen Belle suffered sexism and you also got Merida, MULAN SAVED CHINA- so why is she ignored??? And, "Wait until I tell my mom", is really an insult to the inspiring message of the OG Mulan as....come on, is it not insulting to find out a guy just passed the problem to Lonnie to deal with???
Oh and then Lonnie's just....not in D3. I get its cause actress was busy, but not even a MENTION of her....like, wow, Disney.... Do not get me started on Li'l Shang. His whole introduction is weird as like, when did Lonnie get a brother??? But yeah, @descendantofthesparrow did point that detail out to me about names ironically enough today when we were talking....like, next to it being lazy to just, slap a parents name onto the character....its also disrespectful as like....basic research is key here. And I really don't get what it is with Descendants and making their two Chinese characters, Lonnie and Li'l Shang....into hip hop....I really don't. Lonnie's personality is already constantly changing, and the fact that they did that to her brother too..... Also more evidence they didn't research Mulan.....they say Li'l Shang....is going to rule his kingdom soon....which by logic, is China....which....um....how???? Mulan and Shang are NOT royalty. Yes, they are close with the emperor, but they are not royalty. Disney Princesses doll line isn't evidence at all for this, and neither is the Mulan entry into The Queen's Council, as that book series started AFTER Rise I'm pretty sure, so like, they literally couldn't even look into Mulan's own film and just said, "Yeah guess she rules China now."
And shout out to this bitch cause I still can't get over him: the Elder Wong off Stone City, Charlie Wong. First off. his name should be Wong Charlie from what I understand of how names work in China, not Charlie Wong. And also, WHY CHARLIE?! Like, is he Chinese-American or is this really slapping the whitest name onto a Chinese character? Like, I am so lost by this. There is also Dizzy technically as a Chinese character, as her actress is half-Chinese, but uh....you'd be forgiven to not know that in D2, given how white they make her look, and in D3, they introduce Tremaine as Chinese too, but um....yeah, that can fall into some iffy writing tropes with how we know Tremaine is a abusive person to Cinderella and even in D2, is implied to be abusive to Dizzy....let alone the fact that in the graphic novel for Isle of the Lost, Tremaine is depicted as white, and we technically had Dizzy by that point, so they literally had a relative of Tremaine's to take a hint of what Tremaine should look like a little.
But like....to wrap up I guess this really long answer....its bad is all I can say. Again, I'm not Chinese, so I really would encourage anyone to seek out Descendants fans who are Chinese, but like, Descendants really just fucked up with Chinese representation....just like they fucked up with most representation really.

Why continuing to support Ateez might actually be important/helpful for preventing cultural appropriation in the future
I would like to preface this by saying that I am a person of colour but I am not black. I can and do empathise with black Atiny though I also acknowledge that I cannot fully understand how this affects them. Pain and hurt is always valid and the black community have suffered in ways most of us have not.
At the same time, I am really sick and tired of ‘cancel culture’ and the lack of nuance when discussing issues such as cultural appropriation. They prevent us from having useful discussions and facilitating change. So let’s break down this issue:
The problem: In a promotional photo for their next comeback, Kim Hongjoong, the leader of Ateez, was styled with cornrows. This is a case of cultural appropriation.
The response: Fans emailed KQ Entertainment asking for this hairstyle to be changed and KQ responded saying a) this was not done with conscious effort to appropriate/insult another culture, but that they did it to fit with the concept, b) they cannot re-make any of the content that has been completed for album promotions, c) they will ensure that Hongjoong will not wear this hairstyle during album promotions and d) they will apply what they have learned to future comebacks and ensure that this will not happen again.
Reasons why KQ Entertainment was in the wrong:
Entertainment companies need to start putting resources into educating themselves and their artists. All you need is one (1) person who’s job it is to go over concept ideas. I don’t understand why RESEARCH INTO CONCEPT IDEAS AND THEIR ORIGINS isn’t an industry standard to begin with.  It’s like when you’re writing a fictional story - you DO RESEARCH INTO STORY ELEMENTS. That should be a standard part of creating a ‘concept’ or styling any artist - where does this idea come from? is it COPYING or PLAGIARISING anyone? is it CULTURAL APPROPRIATION?
So, yes, KQ Entertainment made a grave mistake. Furthermore, their blunder is just the latest in a LONGGGG series of cultural appropriation and racism in K-pop. On top of that, this is a racially-sensitive time.
I did initially wonder why Hongjoong, who is an activist for multiple platforms and is very aware of how carefully they must navigate different cultures, didn’t point out that cornrows were not appropriate (esp since San said the members were very involved in this comeback). However, we have to remember that Hongjoong exists outside that culture, lives in a country/works in an industry that is notoriously racist/colourist, and would have seen other groups use that hairstyle (esp for Summer comeback - KoKoBop and Boom ring any bells?). I didn’t fully understand the problem with non-black people wearing cornrows (i just thought it was distasteful, fake and try-hard) until someone pointed out how every aspect of blackness has been stereotyped and criminalized. This is NOT something that most people are taught.
Reasons why people need to FUCKING SETTLE DOWN:
KQ Entertainment’s swift response to their fans was INCREDIBLE. Let me ask all you kpop multis: what did SM do in response to Kai’s dreadlocks and Chenle’s cornrows? There was no explicit apology. There was no attempt to explain themselves. There was no promise to change their behaviour in the future.
KQ Entertainment has shown that they are open to change and education. They have taken action in response to people calling them out. They have apologised for their actions and explained why changes to completed promotional changes cannot be made.
And now people are complaining that KQ haven’t done enough, sending death threats to Hongjoong and generally spreading a disgusting amount of hate.
Listen, regardless of how large an entertainment company is, it is highly unlikely that any of them would change promotional material that has already been completed this close to a comeback date. The money and time that requires is ridiculous. It would require pushing back the comeback date. A small company like KQ, whose world tour was recently CANCELLED, cannot afford to do that. And you may criticise them for choosing money over a ‘more important issue’ but let’s discuss how significant this issue is and the best way to facilitate change.
So we all agree that this is cultural appropriation and that cultural appropriation is bad. We also all agree that KQ has apologised and agreed to make feasible changes. Our response should be to welcome those changes.
If people just keep criticising the company and ‘cancelling’ them for their choices, then it becomes clear to the WHOLE INDUSTRY that trying to change things and negotiate with fans becomes pointless. They’re going to lose support regardless of what they do. This ‘all-or-nothing’ response is ridiculous.
Sensationalism and social media have made it really difficult to have a conversation that doesn’t involve two extremes at opposite ends of a spectrum. In reality, most issues should be viewed on a spectrum, in shades of grey. Responding with aggression and hate, labeling a company and their artists as racist because they’ve appropriated one aspect of a culture and publicly shaming them doesn’t help.
Anti-racism doesn’t mean being an “anti-fan”. EFFECTIVE anti-racism means calling out racists acts (which we’ve done), asking for change (done) and drawing attention to positive behaviours and alternative and reinforce these (WHICH WE ARE NOT DOING).
We have to give KQ Entertainment CONSTRUCTIVE criticism in response to their changes in order for them to recognise that THEY ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING.
Complications: The Harper Bazaar photo shoot - Hongjoong’s hair is styled in braids/cornrows for that photo shoot. It suggests that he was going to have that hairstyle for the majority of their promotions. However, these are still part of promotional material had been completed prior to the teaser photo being dropped. KQ Entertainment truly did not have the time to change it.
Yes, it looks bad. Yes, KQ Entertainment fucked up. But unless we continue to support Ateez and give them constructive criticism that they can REALISTICALLY APPLY, change will not occur. This is a first step. WE have given Ateez and KQ the opportunity to set a NEW PRECEDENT for the industry. WE have given Ateez and KQ to set a NEW STANDARD.
They can ONLY do this if WE continue to support them and give them a chance to SUCCEED.
(P.S. - if you’re sending hate to Hongjoong [and there HAVE been death threats] you are cruel and mean as well as implicit in preventing his education)
