『狩猟者のためのハンドクラフト教書』（山と溪谷社）が明日、発売されます。その中で、ちょっとだけですが、私（安田）の作った毛皮作品の一部や講座の取り組みをご紹介していただいております。

　狩猟などで捕獲した野生動物の（肉以外の）革や角、骨などの活用についてまとめられたゴリゴリの実用本。こんなマニアックな内容をこの時代に書籍という形にまとめることができる山と溪谷社さん（特に鈴木さん）に驚きと敬意を。

本の中では、レザークラフト的な革＆毛皮の活用事例（なんと型紙付き）から、角で印鑑や更にはコール猟用の鹿笛だったり、様々な作品が紹介されていて、超実用的＆マニアックです。

この本を読んでいて、自分が普段やっているやり方との違いが新鮮で面白く、獣の個体差は当たり前として、地域差、個人差、文化、更には趣味性の部分も含めて、画一化＆工業化されきってないことがこの世界の面白さと奥深さだとも改めて感じました。そもそも、捕獲した獲物自体が一点モノですしね。

狩猟者はもちろん、動物好き、もふもふ好き、レザークラフト好き、さらにはモノづくり全般に興味がある人にも楽しめる良著です。装丁もカッコいいし、オススメ！

Research status: Complete

I found this vintage wooden pen holder at a Goodwill while visiting my parents and wanted to take a gander to see how old it is. It only took me about a week of on-and-off research and a bit of deep diving to figure out it's origin company.

At immediate glance I knew it was vintage and probably made in the later 20th century with a sort of laser engraver. My theory was correct and the brand sticker on the back traced me to Lasercraft Inc, (also known as Optical Engineering, Inc.)

Lasercraft was created in 1971 by John A. Macken and his brother in Santa Rosa, California to manufacture and sell scientific instruments. Macken began working as full time president of the company and created the very merchandise that I'd been researching: decorative laser-engraved wood products.

The company apparently began as Optical Engineering and added the sub-company name Lasercraft in 1973 before officially changing the company to Lasercraft, Inc in 1991. After Macken split his ownership around 1991, the company began producing more high-tech products for material processing and focused more on clientele orders rather than retail sales.

The Lasercraft, Inc title became expired in 1997 and it's my theory that the company changed the name back to Optical Engineering, Inc around that time. I found the company still exists today at one of its original addresses in Santa Rosa, California under the name Optical Engineering. It seems to be focusing more on production and working specifically as made-to-order equipment for outside clientele.

Overall, it was interesting to find that this simple engraved pen holder could come from a company with such a high-based-intelligence.
