South African botanist Brian du Preez has discovered a beautiful new species from the Iridaceae family high up in the Langeberg Mountains of the Western Cape, South Africa.

The name of the new species, Geissorhiza seracina (common name: Cherry Satin flower), is inspired by the deep cherry-pink color of its petals—with seracus meaning cherry.

We left our lovely 'garage' in Struisbaai this morning and bade farewell to our landlady Mandi who seemed pleased to have had us as guests. We were heading to our latest stop at a small place called Tergniet near to Mossel Bay. Iinitially we travelled along the 319; an empty road, as straight as a ruler. We passed a group of pigs happily grazing by the roadside. In all, I would guess there were more pigs in the group than there were cars on the road.

The first stop was Swellendam and the Italian coffee shop, Tredici, as recommended by Mandi. We do as we are told as far as Mandi is concerned. It was great and we understand why she liked it. She said it was to die for! Mind you, she said a lot of things were to die for. How she's still alive I'm not sure. Anyway, the coffee and muffin was entirely up to scratch. From our table it was confirmed yet again that we were in Africa; a girl walked by with a pot on her head! Just like they are supposed to! The next stop was Heidelberg. Really odd place. There was no-one there! I mean no-one. We parked in front of a very nice historic building, the Doornboom Homestead, built 1733. Closed but picnic tables outside were welcome for consumption of luncheon. No-one. If tumbleweed had appeared in this residential street we should not have been surprised. We finished up and resumed our journey along deserted highly manicured streets.

The countryside was indeed beautiful with the Langeberg Mountain range ever present. Rich pastures either side with a new winter crop of barley on the way making the scenery so green and fresh. Perversely alongside many new born lambs and calves in evidence more usually associated with spring at home. Next rather brief stop was Albertina where we saw our first two elephants! Then two ostriches. We got quite excited about this and then we saw an entire field of them. It kind of took the edge off.

Our digs for the next three nights is a superbly positioned apartment, directly across the road from the ocean (noisy) and the beach. It's a huge 3 bedroom place so if anyone wants to join us, feel free. We shall be investigating the area in the morning. Clearly the success of the place will depend on whether it has a lighthouse or not.

I recall in standard 8 highschool learning about the Langeberge mountains and here almost 50 years later I'm exploring the region on my motorcycle. I will publish more detailed photos of this amazing scenic route.

Minnesota Sends Firefighters to Help Fight Canadian Wildfires

Minnesota Governor Walz Announced That Minnesota Firefighters Respond to Call from Manitoba to Help Fight Canadian Wildfires ST. PAUL, MN (STL.News) Minnesota Governor Tim Walz Monday announced that Minnesota sent a crew of 17 wildland firefighters to Manitoba, Canada.  The hand crew was deployed after a mutual aid request from Manitoba through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) partnership with the Great Lakes Forest Fire Compact. “Thank you to the Minnesota wildland firefighters who answered the call to help our neighbors in the north h,”said Governor Walz.  “ We have a strong partnership and will continue to do everything we can to share resources and contain the Canadian wildfires.” “Canada is experiencing a historic fire season this year, and I’m proud that our DNR wildland firefighters are ready to protect life and property in Minnesota and beyond whenever the call comes in,” DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen said.  “The Minnesota DNR’s partnership with Canada and with our neighboring states ensures we can quickly and efficiently share resources to respond to wildfires throughout the region.” The crew, which departed from the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center in Grand Rapids, will support Canada’s ongoing wildfire suppression efforts.  Upon arriving in Manitoba, they will receive their initial assignment to support ground suppression efforts, likely helping establish fire fuel breaks in the remote backcountry. These international mutual aid agreements, established through the Great Lakes Forest Fire compact, enable the partnering states and provinces – Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Manitoba, and Ontario – to share firefighting resources upon request throughout the Great Lakes region.  The partnership allows for cooperation and collaboration as well as learning and training experiences for staff to hone their skills and expertise.  During Minnesota’s extensive 2021 wildfire season, DNR contacted the compact for additional support and received access to engines, aircraft, and firefighters. When considering the deployment of wildland firefighters and resources beyond Minnesota, DNR coordinates closely with Minnesota’s interagency federal and tribal wildland fire management partners to ensure response needs in the state are covered before committing resources for out-of-state response. Heilige Familie(1955)

Door? Sjef Drummen  Waar? Kerk Heilige Familie,  Langeberg, hoek Akerstraat - Rembrandtstraat

Naast 'De mijnwerker' bezit Brunssum nog een kunstwerk van Sjef Drummen, namelijk 'De Heilige Familie'. Het is een terracottabeeld waarover metaalglazuur is aangebracht. 

Hierdoor wekt het de indruk uit brons vervaardigd te zijn. Dit beeld werd in 1955 door de broederorde van de Heilige Familie aan de gelijknamige kerk in de parochie Langeberg geschonken.

Tulista marginata (Haworthia marginata)

This plant and its close relative Tulista pumila were long included in the genus Haworthia, but they differ in having a stouter multi-branched flower stalk, and also in their chunkier flowers. DNA evidence shows that they are a distinct lineage, and they have now been put in their own genus, Tulista. From south of the Langeberg mountain range in the southwestern part of South Africa.

Mists and mellow fruitiness

The darkness of winter is closing in around us, the golden shock of leaves yet to fall add a glow to the late seasonal light, and the chill of cold rain seeps into every nook and cranny. Time to settle down, wrap up and prepare for the long cold winter.

Vierkoppen, produce boutique wines in the South African Robertson region. Nestled in the foothills of the Langeberg mountains, with well drained sandy shale soil. Their grapes are bunch picked, basket pressed, open fermented and barrel aged, and they exclusively make reds, mature full bodied reds.

The Basket Case Merlot, supplied by Bon Coeur Fine Wines, pours from the elegant bottle with a satisfying glug, and fills the glass with a dark ruby red wine. The nose is autumn and winter berries, dank leaves and mustiness. Blackcurrants and brambles feature heavily.

After an initial sharpness, the big flavours come pouring out. Blackberries, blueberries, and blackcurrants with a rich caramel running through it. The sharpness of oak adds a spicy note, there's a tang of rubber or tobacco running around the tongue and the mustiness of the open fermentation, adds a little kick to the finish.

It's a bold Merlot that would go perfectly with chicken, spiced beef or lamb and roasted vegetables. Perfect with a winter stew!
