Italian Touring Club map: Civitavecchia. This map was realized by the geographic institute De Agostini and dates back to 1946-50. This map as a whole is marvellous for the simple clarity of the drawing, which highlights the volcanic conformations of the main lakes in Lazio.

Bracciano
Last night’s storm was over earlier than expected and today turned into a pretty nice day. We rode the commuter train to Bracciano.
Bracciano, northwest of Rome, is famous for its lake and its remarkably well-preserved medieval castle. We were ready to get out of the city and Bracciano fit the bill.
Tumblr media
The view from the train station is pretty spectacular.
Tumblr media
When facing the lake, it is hard to appreciate that it is the caldera of a volcano. But on the map, it is very clear.
Tumblr media
We walked down the hill to the beach. This time of year, the beach was empty. It is lined with beach clubs and restaurants, so I am sure it hops in summer.
Tumblr media
The castle , which is in the center of town, hangs over the lake.
Tumblr media
We skipped the castle tour. One reviewer said it was like touring a wedding venue ( it is a wedding venue so there may be some truth to the review!).
Tumblr media
The part of town behind the castle has kept its medieval charm….
Tumblr media
Complete with narrow, cobble stone alleyways….
Tumblr media
….Leading up to castle walls.

Rome 2023 Day 3
Sat Nov 25
For breakfast we walked over across the river to the Sciascia Caffe 1919.
Tumblr media
It was COLD and windy this morning. Down around 3-4° C. (mid to high 30’s F.)
Then we went to the Castel Sant’Angelo.
Tumblr media
This is, as you may have guessed, a castle structure. But it started off has Hadrian’s tomb, built in 134-139 AD. It served as several different things, including a fortress from the 1300’s. Climbing to the top affords a fantastic 360° view over the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We went to Emma pizzeria for lunch,
Tumblr media
then back to the hotel to back an overnight bag, and then to the train station to grab a ride an hour north to Anguillara Sabazia, the town where our friend Lucia lives.
Tumblr media
We spent the evening there visiting with her and her fiancé, Andrea. Her home is right off of Lake Bracciano.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We went into the town of Anguillara for a pre-dinner snack...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
walked around the town of Bracciano at the foot of this castle... while freezing...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Had a great time at dinner and afterwards just sitting at home and having a liquore. I think I got to bed around 1a.
Tumblr media
And saw this fridge magnet too...

Anguillara Sabazia, The Historic Lake of Roma
Roma, Lazio, Italy
Stayed : April 2023
Tumblr media
Perched over Lake Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia is built around the site of the oldest Neolithic Village, [estimated 5750 B.C.], on any Lake in Western Europe.
Many of the sites still standing existed long before the written word and have no truly known establishment date. The layers of what have been, run through many veins of time, ruins of the Republican Age, 1st Century B.C and evidence of the Etrusansians in 396 B.C. The area has been raided, sieged and pillaged for centuries until Rome formalised it as a territory. Under which it became the birthplace of long-distance swimming as a competitive sport, rented by Knights for fishing and was the location of some of the most sublime imperial villas and Roman Villas of the time. It now remains in homage to that history and has been painted in depiction by many artists as one of the most beautiful towns in the country.
I stumbled across the town by accident while visiting Rome, naïve to its History or what to expect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As soon as I arrived in the Historic Piazza I was engulfed by it's charm and wisdom. In awe of the way the rooftops mirror the undulation of the hills, all leaning intimately towards the great expanse of Lake Bracciano. The atmosphere is dense with a thousand years of History and so too is the Lake, which was once home to the submerged ruins of an ancient city.
If one beautiful Lake isn't enough, Anguillara is home to two. The second being a hidden gem awaiting at the base of a forested hill, the ancient Lake Martigano. Both now occupy what was a volcanic crater system around 300,000 years ago.
The panoramic views that can be found from the top of the small narrow streets is exquisite. The fresh and local produce found in the Markets and Restaurants reminds you what food should taste like. The inhabitants of Anguillara Sabazia are rooted in the integrity of their History and committed to preserving what has always been in their small city.  You will find all the necessary modern amenities nestled amongst the History. But while standing in its cobblestone streets, you will be engulfed by tradition and a connectedness to a simpler life that many of us have long forgotten.
The hill scapes and surrounding towns are littered with the ruins. The Town encompassed by People who are passionate, kind and friendly. The Lakes are as glorious to look at as they are to swim in.
This testament to History can be seen in a day or a weekend. But would be more thoroughly appreciated and felt for a longer stay to contemplate life and be inspired.

Arriving
There is a Train from Rome that stops at the Anguillara Station and takes about 30 Minutes. The Anguillara Station is about 4kms from the City and can be reached by the Local Bus [Schiaffini] or a Local Driver Emanuele who can be booked in advance via WhatsApp.
An reasonable alternative option is to arrange a Driver directly from Rome. Emanuele offers a pick up service from Rome also. And can provide much context of the Town's History.
While in Angulliara, a Driver or the Bus can be used to explore the surrounding ruins and towns. Unless of course you have your own car. It is best to speak with your accomodation as to the best place to park as most streets are too narrow to accomodate street parking.
Accommodation Ideal
An AirBnb allows you to make the most of your stay in this quaint city and immerse yourself in the essence of the town and its People. Ideally with a Rooftop Patio to enjoy the long lasting sunsets over the Lake.
Do
Try Tozzetti, a one hundred year old Recipe for Almond Tart. Which you should most definitely buy from Il Chicco d’Oro. Pizza from Moulin Cardé, which rivals even the most exquisite Pizza in Italy.  Broccoli Relish, Mushrooms and cured Meats, all of which a famous delicacies of this Region. Local Restaurants and Cafes. Walk the Lake Promenade. Put your feet in the sand. Swim in the Lake.

⁣ Canon EOS 250D ⁣ Taken on 19/02/2022.⁣ ⁣ *⁣ Nestled on the shores of Lake Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia is a historic town that makes for an interesting day trip from Rome.⁣ ⁣ The history of Anguillara Sabazia begins with the formation of the volcanic Lake Bracciano, which is believed to have been formed around 600,000 ago. The prehistoric lake is home to three towns, one of which is Anguillara Sabazia.⁣ ⁣ The medieval town as it is seen today was built on the remains of the original Roman village.⁣ ⁣ Over the years many Romans have purchased holiday homes or villas on the shores of the lake at Anguillara Sabazia.⁣ ⁣ Rather than a town to be fought over, it has become a beautiful resort and a place to get away from city life.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ 🚆 Take the train from Rome or Viterbo to Anguillara Sabazia.⁣ ⁣ 🚌 Catch an urban bus to the town centre from the station. ⁣ ⁣ 🎟 Tickets can be bought at the nearby tobacconist shop.⁣ ______________________________________⁣ ⁣ #AnguillaraSabazia #VolgoRoma #Lazio #LazioDaScoprire #LazioDaVivere #Lazio_Cartoline #Lazio_Super_Pics #LazioNascosto #BorghItalia #BorghiPiùBelli #UnoDeiBorghiPiùBellidItalia #Borghi_Autentici #BorgoDeiBorghi #Italia #Italy #BestBorghiPics #BorghiSuperScatti #DiarioTricolore_Lazio #TiConsiglioUnBorgo_Lazio #SiViaggiare_Lazio #Lazio_Mania__ #Ig_Lazio #IgersLazio #VillagesMyPassion #Alluring_Lazio #Divine_Villages #InstaItaly #WeLiveToExplore #Italy_Hidden_Gems #Italy_BestPlaces (at Anguillara Sabazia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci3IMdIqkCx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Left Rome to make our move to Trevignano where we’ll be staying for the next month. Trevignano is a lake town situated on Lake Bracciano, about 1 hour outside of Rome. We made a stop in Bracciano, a town larger than Trevignano where the Bracciano Castle is located. A feudal castle built by the Medici Family. Catherine de Medici would visit the Castle often! Was crazy for me to walk on the same grounds as her because she’s a celebrity in the Art History world haha.
Tumblr media
I didn’t know this but Pope Paul VI who was inaugurated in 1550 was a part of the Medici family. This linked the Medici family to the political/religious power of Rome, giving them unchecked political power. The year sounded familiar, and I looked it up and Pope Paul VI was the Pope that rounded up Roman Jews and forced them into the Jewish Ghetto that was built next to the Tiber. He was also the Pope that called for the collection of Talmudim that were burnt in Campo di Fiori.
This information made me rethink art patronage, and also try to situate jewish artistry within Art History. Jews were second class, famous Jewish artists of that period do not exist, and this fact has ignited my curiosity to learn more about European Jewish artistry during the middle ages and Renaissance. I can only imagine most of their craft was for purposes of religion, torah dressings, tallit, katubahs, etc, but would be interested to learn about this. In Rome, Jews weren’t allowed to work metal, so all of their metal objects, torah crowns, goblets, etc, were made by Romans.
Back to the castle. The castle felt like I was walking onto the set of Game of Thrones. The castle was built during Feudal years so it had one thick defensive wall, where you could walk the perimeter on the roof. There were also holes in the wall where archers would aim at incoming invaders. The kitchen had two massive clay ovens that were used to cook whole animals, like porchetta or something of the sort.
