Meet at Harrodsburg

Here we see a southbound Amtrak Floridian passing a northbound Louisville & Nashville freight "in the hole" at the north end of Harrodsburg Siding. This is the former Monon, which had been absorbed by the L&N six years earlier.

The Amtrak train is powered by SDP40Fs (using steam to heat the cars) while the lead locomotive on the freight is a GP38-2 built for the L&N in 1972.

Mikes 1896 and 1831—a J-4A-J-4 doubleheader---blast out of Corbin on the “High Line” with a DeCoursey-bound train in 1942. The double tracked Cumberland Valley Division to Loyall is in the foreground. The lead engine carries white flags, denoting an extra (or unscheduled) freight. Most of the coal trains (as well as southbound empty drags) on the CV and the KY were operated as extras rather than scheduled trains.

A Dreary Halloween

This is a southbound Amtrak Floridian, seen in the middle of Bloomington, Indiana. The rail line here is the former Monon, Louisville & Nashville by the time this image was made.

The two EMD SDP40Fs, in Phase I paint, are pulling a train made up of legacy equipment of course. There had been a wonderful passenger station just to the right, which had been razed perhaps a decade prior to this and replaced with a drive-in bank.

When I snapped it, CEI E7A 28 headed south with #3, the Danville Flyer, as the first northbound L&N train passed it at 159th Street in South Holland, IL.
