UNESCO CITIES OF LITERATURE ARE TAKING PART IN A GLOBAL AND SIMULTANEOUS SHOW OF SOLIDARITY. INSPIRED BY AND IN COOPERATION WITH THE ODESSA LITERATURE MUSEUM.
In Manchester we will be holding a very special reading amongst the new Threads exhibition in the Histories Hub of Manchester Central Library which contains unique items sent specially to Manchester from Odesa. Readings will be in English and Ukrainian from historic and contemporary authors.
We strongly believe that books can help to connect people, and that the network of the UNESCO Cities of Literature are a symbol of both connection as well as support. The readings will happen in advance of the rally in Piccadilly Gardens in support of Ukraine that starts at 2pm.
Readings will also take place on this day in other UNESCO Cities of Literature: Edinburgh, Exeter, Iași City, Krakow, Kuhmo, Lillehammer, Ljubljana, Melbourne, Nottingham, Quebec City, Reykjavik, Tukums, Wroclaw.
Please note that we will be taking photographs and filming at this event, if you do not wish to be photographed that’s absolutely fine, but please let staff know in advance either digitally via the contact form or in person at the start of the event.
With thanks to Milan City of Literature for this initiative.

North of the Kuhmo-Oulu line, large signs say that you are in a free roaming reindeer zone. The finns are positive: reindeer are the stupidest animals of the Creation. If you come up by car, it will always manage to find the most irrational move, as if it wanted to put all chances to die on its side. Keep an eye on the sides of the road, especially at dawn and dusk."

An individual was apprehended while attempting to cross from Finland into Russia on foot in October, the Finnish Border Guard said in a report released on Wednesday.
According to local newspaper Kuhmoinen, the would-be border-crosser was a young Bulgarian man.
The Kainuu Border Guard said that it intervened in a "suspected state border crime" in the eastern municipality of Kuhmo. The man was found near Jonkeri, a lake some five kilometres from the Russian border and 50km from the centre of Kuhmo.
Based on a tip-off from a member of the public, a Kainuu Border Guard patrol found a foreigner on foot "whose intention was to cross the national border illegally from Finland to Russia," officials said. They did not specify the date of the incident or details about the individual.
The man was detained and a preliminary investigation launched into the incident. The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) sent the man back to his home country and banned him from entering Finland for three years.
This was one of eight suspected crimes uncovered by the Kainuu Border Guard in October. Besides hunting violations, these included two minor state border offenses further north in Kuusamo, and unlicensed driver at the Vartius border crossing point, east of Kajaani.

Spent a evening in a small hide hidden deep into a small forest in Kuhmo Finland, after around a hour and a half we had our first visitor a large brown bear, 30 minutes later a lone wolf came walking right past the hide no more than 20ft away, to cap a great day off a wolverine came into the forest just before dark and all three animals shared this small woodland before disappearing into the forest.
