It had been a little over a year since the attack, and Yumia was still living with him. At first she’d said she would find a new place, but that ended up never happening. And to be honest… he didn’t mind. Sure he’d had to give up some of his more slobbish habits, but it was worth it. He was… happy. Happy to be able to see her all day, every day. The first person he saw when he woke up, and the last person he saw before he went to sleep. But the best part of the whole thing was that she seemed happy too.

He doesn’t seem to care even when she says she’s not going to run, but he still insists she come along. “To be his bodyguard” he says. He’ll be holding on to all the goods until the betters get their winnings. He’ll need protection, and all the kids know Taska’s really good at hitting people in the face. They also know that if you hit her back, she won’t even cry. She’ll just keep on hitting until you fall down.

He pats her on the back and smiles at her reassuringly. He promises to give her a cut of the pay, and that one day when they’re grown-ups, they’ll make real grown-up money. The kind of money that could get them off of Omega some day.
