i was finally able to digitize the cassette tapes of an interview with my great-grandfather who fled poland. i never got to meet him but hearing his voice, i know him. so many parts of him are so clearly present in my grandma, in my dad, in me. 

Our Kolno was an ordinary small town, one of hundreds like it, which existed in Poland and Eastern Europe before the Holocaust overcame the Jewish world, during the Second World War. But to us, born there, having spent our childhood and youth there, Kolno remains the one and only, the unique town, and no other town and city – however big or beautiful, could ever take its place.

our family traded horses, in kolno. my great-grandfather got out, but others weren’t so lucky. he went back, later, to save his siblings, and he couldn’t. hearing his hebrew makes me want to sob. so much depends on the polish jew escaping certain death to one day have the freedom to make hats and make babies and make a life in safety.

Soviet Cavalry, Fourth Army Interned in East Prussia

Piłsudski‘s counterattack.  By August 24, his forces had reached Grajewo on the East Prussian frontier, cutting off Gai’s cavalry corps, the Fourth Army, and nearly half of the Fifteenth Army.

August 25 1920, Kolno--Piłsudski‘s counterattack from the Wieprz left the Soviet right flank, northwest of Warsaw, dangerously out of position and in danger of being cut off from any route back to Russia.  Gai’s Konkorpus (cavalry corps) was fighting around Płock, sixty miles west of Warsaw down the Vistula, when Gai heard of the Polish attack on August 20, and immediately dashed back east.  They were able to avoid detection by Polish air units thanks to heavy clouds, and on the 22nd broke through some Polish infantry and tanks north of Chiechanów.  Shuvayev’s Fourth Army, which had been fighting Sikorski north of Modlin, was in a similar predicament, and its intact units had also been trying to escape to the northeast.

On August 24, however, Gai and the remnants of the Fourth Army ran into  Piłsudski’s forces, which had reached the East Prussian border and cut off their escape route.  The Fourth Army at this point gave up and entered East Prussia; after a failed attempt to break through, Gai’s cavalry did so the next day, singing The Internationale, preferring internment in Germany to becoming prisoners of war to Poles angry at the Soviet invasion and pillaging of their country.  Shuvayev himself had managed to escape, but all that remained of his Army were two regiments and the part of his staff that hadn’t been captured at Chiechanów.

Two additional divisions from the Fifteenth Army had also crossed into Germany.  The remaining two-thirds of Tukhachevsky’s forces did manage to escape across the Niemen, but nearly half of that was shattered by the Polish attacks.  The Soviet invasion of Poland had been decisively defeated.

Tragedia wydarzyła się w gminie Kolno w województwie podlaskim. W środę wieczorem podczas prac polowych doszło do makabrycznego wypadku. Prasa rolująca wciągnęła 45-letniego rolnika. Gertrude Blanch

Gertrude Blanch was born on February 2, 1897 in what is now Kolno, Poland. Blanch did groundbreaking work in computation and numerical analysis. She served as technical director of the US government’s Mathematical Tables Project, overseeing more than four hundred human computers. During World War II, she worked for the Applied Mathematics Panel of the Office for Scientific Research and Development, managing calculations for the Army and Navy. Blanch later worked at the Institute for Numerical Analysis, and then became a senior mathematician at the Aerospace Research Laboratories at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

Gertrude Blanch died in 1996 at the age of 98.
