Knock-Knock, who’s there?

Everybody knows him. He is every student’s worst nightmare and every English literature graduate ‘s greatest idol. With plays like “Romeo and Juliet”, even Taylor Swift references him in her songs (Love story, All too Well (10 Minute Version)). William Shakespeare may have been born centuries ago but still impacts our life greatly, not only through Swift’s music.

Born in 1564 and father of three, he lived most of his life under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I, who secured relative stability, economic growth, and flowering of theatre, literature, and music for Britain, marking her legacy as “The Golden Age”. Someone who profited from this rising popularity of theatre and literature was our dear Shakespeare, who wrote over 34 plays, 154 sonnets, and multiple poems. His language shows skills of high complexity and imagination and found a great liking in every class of British society, even in the king’s court for the amusement of the aristocracy. Most of his plays contained relatively simple plots but sparked through Shakespeare’s use of metaphors and vivid images. He also introduced some commonly used phrases and words like gossip which we all do and love so very much. But jokes aside, the next time you want to deliver a good old “Knock-Knock who’s there?” joke, remember that even it has its roots in Shakespeare’s plays (Macbeth, Act 2, Scene 3). Shakespeare not only shaped the way we speak today, but he also made an impact on the structure of tragedies, using the now well-known 5 act-structure.

In his early days, Shakespeare started out as an actor and playwright as a member of the “Lord Chamberlain’s chamber”. Since his father was able to climb up the social ladder by marrying Shakespeare’s mother, Mary Arden of Warwickshire, young Shakespeare was able to visit grammar school. Or was he?
