Arrests of coronation protesters were ‘premeditated’, says Republic chief
Police criticised after arrests included women’s safety campaigners handing out rape alarms
Kevin Rawlinson, Mon 8 May 2023 13.19 BST
The arrests of anti-monarchy protesters during the coronation was a premeditated attempt to “disrupt and diminish” their republican demonstration, a leading activist has said.
Graham Smith, the head of the group Republic, said the Metropolitan police’s decision to break up Saturday’s planned protest before it began trampled over their rights, adding the group had been in conversation with Scotland Yard for months beforehand.
Asked if he thought his arrest before the event was premeditated, Smith said: “Absolutely. I have no doubt about that at all, simply because there was nothing that we did do that could possibly justify even being detained and arrested and held.”
He said his organisation had engaged with the police throughout the planning of its demonstration, with officers saying until the day before that they had no concerns.
“They were well aware of what we were going to do and [said] they would engage with us and not disrupt us. So they have repeatedly lied about their intentions. And I believe that they had every intention of arresting us prior to doing so,” he said.
Ken Marsh, the chair of the Metropolitan Police Federation, said police acted “without fear or favour” and had to act within the context they found on the ground.
He said: “Protesting can take place in this country. But it’s the level to which you want to perform that protesting that we have to balance.”
[Inserted video of protesters being arrested at the coronation, captioned: Head of UK's leading anti-monarchy movement among several arrested at coronation protest.]
He dismissed concerns about heavy-handed policing as “pontificating”, insisting that police had done an “incredible job” on a day when the world’s eyes were on the UK. “Not one incident took place. And this went off around the world without any need to worry about what happened that day.”
Rishi Sunak backed the police on Monday, saying: “The police are operationally independent of government, they will make these decisions based on what they think is best.
“Actually I’m grateful to the police and everyone who played a part in ensuring that this weekend has gone so well, so successfully and so safely. That was an extraordinary effort by so many people and I’m grateful to them for all their hard work.”

so tl/dr: the anti-monarch group communicated with the police for months and were assured that they were allowed to protest, and then on the day, they were immediately arrested.
the mass arrests are being framed as a good thing because there were "no incidents" on the day.
the pm is backing the police on the choices made while also carefully separating himself from them on a structural basis, as if the government do not write the laws that the police are meant to follow.
do not let them brush this under the rug; do not fall for the propaganda that this was a good thing.
these laws take away the human right to protest. they unlawfully arrested 64 people. they have essentially made thought crime illegal with the ability for police to arrest anyone if believed they are conspiring to disrupt the peace.
they called the largest police operation in the history of the uk for this. the tories have been slowly edging the country into a police state for years now.
this should worry you. it should scare you. do not let them fool you into thinking this is normal.

Police reportedly surrounded the Ecuadorian embassy in London amid rumors that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is facing imminent arrest. The WikiLeaks founder has been holed up in the embassy since 2012, seeking asylum there to avoid extradition to Sweden on rape charges, but reports on Friday indicated that police could be prepared to arrest him. The official WikiLeaks Twitter account seemed to fuel much of the rumors with a tweet on Friday that there was an increased police presence outside the embassy. “A build up of plain clothes ear-piece wearing operatives around the Ecuador embassy in London in the last two days has been sighted by Julian Assange’s lawyers,” the tweet noted. “There are normally 2-4 plainclothes British operatives present. The reason for the increase is not publicly known.” It was not clear if London police would have authority to arrest Julian Assange if the WikiLeaks founder remained inside the embassy, where he had the protection of Ecuador’s government. There had long been reports that Assange would face arrest if he ever left the embassy, which he has not done in the nearly seven years he has been there. The report about increased police presence outside the embassy comes a day after NBC News reporter Ken Dilanian reported on Twitter that the U.S. Department of Justice operated a flight from Washington, D.C., to London. The plane actually left from Manassas, Virginia, which Dilanian reported is where FBI teams leave to detain suspects overseas. There were conflicting reports about whether police in London were after Julian Assange. The Guardian reporter Kevin Rawlinson wrote on Twitter that Metro police were actually in the area for reports of a burglary. But that has done little to slow the rumors that Julian Assange may be a target for arrest. There have been building reports in recent months that the U.S. Justice Department was investigating Assange, and late last year, an inadvertent court filing appeared to show that Assange was already facing charges, the New York Times reported. “Top Justice Department officials told prosecutors over the summer that they could start drafting a complaint against Mr. Assange, current and former law enforcement officials said,” the report noted. “The charges came to light late Thursday through an unrelated court filing in which prosecutors inadvertently mentioned them.” As far back as last year, the Daily Mail reported that Julian Assange was fearful that he would be arrested and extradited to the United States to face charges for leaking classified information.

Fall Books All Your Kids Will Love!
It’s rapidly approaching: that season so many of us call our favorite.
The one where pumpkin spice lattes, candles, and gourds prevail. I often feel like this time of year is more of a ‘fresh start’ time than the New Year.
The older kids are back to school and I find myself making lists, attempting new habits, and setting goals as if it were January 1st. Even with all those things to look forward to in the fall, the season’s best picture books are still my favorite thing to anticipate. Our family’s favorite, by far, is Fletcher and the Falling Leaves, but there are a handful of others that make my ‘best of’ list.
Fletcher and the Falling Leaves
by Julia Rawlinson
This is the first Fletcher book I read to my kids and remains my favorite. It’s about a sweet little squirrel (or maybe fox? Who can tell?) who frantically tries to keep all the leaves from falling as he worries it means the tree is unwell. I love all the woodland characters and the beautiful illustrations.
The Little Yellow Leaf
by Carin Berger
I could look at the images in this book all day. The text is written in interesting patterns and each page has a collage-type illustration with so many details. The story is sweet as well and a fun way to talk about all the colorful and falling leaves around us.
The Scarecrow’s Hat
by Ken Brown
This one is new to me this year and I love the loose pattern on each page and the idea of each animal having something to offer to another friend.
Yellow Time
by Lauren Sringer
Lauren Sringer’s illustrations in Yellow Time are so vivid and her descriptions are rich. I would highly recommend this for kids in the 4-6 age range as there is so much language to explore and discuss.
Because of an Acorn
by Lola M. Schaefer and Adam Schaefer
This is one of the more graphically pleasing books you’ll ever find. It’s a simple story about how all things in nature are connected, but the illustrations will just capture you.
Why Do Leaves Change Color
by Betsy Maestro
While all of the above books are fiction picture books, ‘Why Do Leaves Change Color by Betsy Maestro is non-fiction and such a well-written book about the science behind our beautiful fall colors.
It’s written with language and helpful illustrations I would consider appropriate for a wide age range of children from about age 4 to 10.
Time To Sleep
by Denise Fleming
A nice change from all the leaf books in that it focuses on preparing for hibernation. A series of animal friends remind one another about winter coming. The text and animals it introduces are wonderful.
Leaves
by David Ezra Stein
This is such a precious book about a bear who is concerned about the falling leaves. It follows him into hibernation and as he wakes up in the spring to the new buds the trees have formed. This is a simple book for younger kids, but a very sweet story.
This is a simple book for younger kids, but a very sweet story.
Run, Turkey, Run
by Diane Mayr
Lastly, this is our favorite Thanksgiving-related book about a turkey who manages to escape the farmer the day before Thanksgiving. It’s hilarious and fun and your kids will love it!

Costa Blanca Bowls Roundup WE 10 November 18
Country Bowls Club by Jo Richardson The Flamingos travelled to Greenland’s on Monday in good spirits. Our old sister club is blessed with some fine bowlers and so the morning progressed with each rink being keenly contested. By early afternoon, however, the game had taken on a different look and the Flamingos went on to record another fine away win. Results are; Rink 4 – Sylvia Rennie, Dave Smith and Jim Rennie 11 – 21, Rink 5 – Pat Ray, Peter Robins and Brian Ray 30 – 21, Rink 6 – Ben Noke, Pat Emmet and Ray Emmet 20 – 13, Rink 7 – Dennis Wade, Les Turner and Phil Warrington 20 – 21, Rink 8 – John Jukes, Derek Jiggins and Geoff Paylor 23 – 28 Friday saw the Gecko’s arriving at the club to a green that had experienced a wild hailstorm through the night and Graham, the owner of Country Bowls, working the carpet brush to clear the sitting water and make the green playable. After a couple of hours of hard work the game was back on. San Miguel were tough opposition coming to Country Bowls from a great win against the top of the league team Mazarron Miners. The Gecko’s played hard and fought to the end in very difficult high winds resulting in a great win. The Gecko’s winning teams were Pat Patton, Den Wade and Brian Patton. 26 – 10, Ben Noke, Pat Ray and Brian Ray. 22 – 18, And Brenda Jiggins, Derek Jiggins and Ray Emmet. 18 – 13. With a total of 95 shots against San Miguel on 88,the Gecko’s enjoyed a welcome 8 – 4 win. Our second game on Friday were the Cubs away to Vista Bella Conquistadors on a very windy afternoon. Whilst the bowls ran straight on one hand and swung far on the other, it took both teams all their skills and talent just to play to the jack. A closer game could not have been predicted with Country Bowls taking the shot difference of 6 and winning on 3 rinks. Overall score 8 – 4 to the Cubs. Winning rinks Joel Fernandez, Craig Dyson and Andy Bryce, Chris Stevens, Dot Davies and Peter Robins, and lastly Rob Hallam, Dave Smith and Niel West.
