Best Digital Piano Under $1000 | Yamaha, Roland, Kawai & Casio
youtube
Welcome to a fresh rundown of our favorite pianos and keyboards between the $500 and $1000 (USD) price range available on the market. In this article, we'll be looking at various models for the best digital piano under $1000, from Kawai’s ES110 to Yamaha’s P125, Casio’s fairly new PX-S1000, or Roland’s FP30. Every piano on the list is an 88-note instrument with a graded hammer action keyboard and touch-sensitive weighted keys.
This current year is certainly giving us plenty of reasons to find interesting and fun things to do indoors, and the piano is one of those things that checks all kinds of boxes. It's mentally stimulating, it can be social, and you can learn some of your favorite songs pretty quickly from YouTube.
There are a ton of families and parents out there who are thinking about introducing piano either back into their home or possibly for the first time, but they don't necessarily want to invest substantially more in an acoustic piano and find some of the extra perks of a digital piano, such as the ability to play quietly via the headphone jacks.
Best-Selling Piano Category
The $500-$1000 class is an incredibly popular category, in fact, it’s actually the category that boasts the highest volume of units sold for each manufacturer. As such, every major manufacturer offers at least one model in this class, so it's great to see how they all stack up against one another.
While most folks revert to Amazon to do a lot of their shopping research these days, many of these models are not actually sold on Amazon so some of the models might be totally new to you. We'll split it up between portable digitals (lightweight, easily transportable options), as well as stationary, home digital pianos.
Portable Digitals | Best Digital Piano Under $1000
Kawai ES110
The first instrument on our list is the Kawai ES110. As a portable piano, in its most basic format out of the box the ES110 is designed to be picked up and taken around, and it's one of the most lightweight instruments currently on the market. Kawai pianos, generally speaking, are known for a very realistic feel, overall sound quality, and a focus on the piano experience. When it comes to other features, sometimes we call that edutainment (lots of instrument sounds and rhythms), Kawai's tends to not be as loaded up in that department. A lot of the focus is instead geared toward creating as good a piano experience as possible.
Harmonic Imaging Sound Engine
The ES110 uses the Harmonic Imaging engine, which is an additive synthesis on top of an existing sample of a Kawai EX Concert Grand Piano. Please note this is different than the SK-EX grand piano sample set that the new CN / CA pianos have. The ES110 can be connected via wireless Bluetooth to a tablet with Kawai’s Virtual Technician, which gives you microscopic control of all of the parameters.  It also gives the player 192-note polyphony, which is PLENTY for great textured playing at any level of complexity.
Responsive Hammer Compact Action
It uses Kawai's Responsive Hammer Compact action. This is a very well-weighted action. that has shown itself over the years to be a very durable action as well with good touch sensitivity.
Summary
For people who are looking at feel and piano tone as their main priorities with maybe a secondary priority being either the Bluetooth or just lightweight portability, the ES110 is an excellent choice. The ES110 is also compatible with a matching designer stand and triple pedal board from Kawai if you'd like more than the standard damper/sustain pedal that's included in the box.
Roland FP30
The next piano on our list is the Roland FP-30. Roland is the first company to have built a fully electric piano and has consistently been one of the key innovators of digital pianos for decades now. The FP-30 has been around for a little while and it's been a proven performer in the marketplace.
SuperNATURAL Piano Sound Engine
The FP30’s SuperNATURAL piano sound engine combines sampling with modern modeling technology for a convincing and expressive piano tone. The electric pianos are definite standouts as well.
Its onboard speakers aren’t quite as full-bodied as the ES110 for piano sound,  but of course, can always be sent through an amp to beef it up.
PHA4 Action
The biggest thing that stands out about the FP-30 is the action - Roland's PHA-4 action. You'll find this action across much of the Roland line (including some models almost triple the price), and most notably, it features a triple sensor which is actually a really big deal for people who are using this to trigger virtual instruments or potentially, or for accurate MIDI output in a studio setting. The action also comes with a very nicely textured white key, and could certainly double as a bare-bones stage piano.
Summary
The addition of the Piano Partner 2 app is almost a must with this one since it gives it the rhythm auto-accompaniment feature. Also, like the ES110, the FP30 is also very lightweight and easy to carry around, but it is available as well with the full permanent stand and a triple pedal.
Yamaha P125
Piano number three is another one that I'm sure lots of people have run into - the Yamaha P125, which is easily one of the best-selling digital pianos in this category. Yamaha is famous for its manufacturing quality control, and they have always done a great job of matching their product with the customer demands.
Pure CF Sound Engine
The P125’s Pure CF sound engine is probably the biggest highlight of this instrument. This is a quality sound engine producing excellent tone for the price point.
There’s also a really nice clear set of speakers on board with two speakers that are actually facing you, so in terms of the sonic playing experience that the player themselves gets with the P125, it's just excellent.
GHS Action
The GHS action may be a little more basic than what you’re getting on the ES110 and FP30 in that less focus has been given to creating as authentic a physical touch.
This is probably simply due to the fact that the GHS action has been out for quite a few years now, so compared to some of the newer actions coming out from other manufacturers, it is feeling a little bit dated.
That said, it’s by no means a bad action, and still more than up for the task of helping a student through piano lessons.
Summary
The other thing that we really appreciate about the P125 is the ease with which you can navigate the various sounds that it's equipped with. There's also onboard accompaniment that's really well executed and easy to navigate.
The P125 offers a really nice balance of performance and features. Just like the ES110 and FP30, you can get the P125 with a matching stand and triple pedal, though out of the box it's nice and lightweight as well.
Casio PXS1000
Fourth on the list is Casio's relatively new Privia PX-S1000 which serves as the spiritual successor to the immensely popular and groundbreaking Casio Privia PX-160. With the release of this as well as the upgraded PX-S3000, there's clearly been a much bigger emphasis by Casio on the overall look and feel of the instrument. The 1000 and 3000 models are very distinct because of the high gloss, shiny black finish.
Multi-Dimensional AiR Sound Source
Casio has paid particularly close attention to creating as much control and variety of different reverb effects and surround effects as you really could possibly expect in an instrument of this price point with their AiR Sound Source.
Casio Multi-Dimensional-AiR-Sound-Source
The AiR Sound Source is well regarded in the industry for its richness and sense of space around the notes themselves. Interestingly, all of the controls are touch-sensitive and there are no actual physical buttons, which also looks very slick.
Smart Scaled Hammer Action Keyboard
The Smart Scaled Hammer Action features key-tops that have exaggerated textures that may be something that is a very good thing for people, or it could be something that's a little overdone. Either way, it's something you really just have to try because you never know until your fingers touch the keys.
In general, this is a solid action that most would agree outperforms Yamaha’s GHS action and is probably on par with Kawai’s GHS action.
Summary
S1000 is available with a matching stand, however, it does not have a matching pedalboard, though it is available with a floating triple pedal system, something similar to the Roland FP-60. The PX-S1000 is the most affordable digital piano on our list.
Home Digitals | Best Digital Piano Under $1000
Let's move into the home digital category. These are instruments that are not designed to be portable but are still very affordable, very easy to move around the house if need be, and come with integrated stands (sometimes a bench too). Be sure to check every individual product page, so that you know exactly whether you need to get an extra bench or whether one is included.
Kawai KDP110
The first home digital on the list is the Kawai KDP110. This is an interesting choice and comes right in at around the $1,000 mark in the United States. Some dealers may have this for slightly more, but it's close enough that we wanted to include it in this list. All kinds of things stand out about the KDP110.
Harmonic Imaging Sound Engine With SKEX Grand Piano Sample
The main grand piano sound is the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX individually sampled engine, which is a huge plus as this is a super thick and realistic piano tone. The added SKEX sample means this version of the HI engine is an upgrade over the version featured in the ES110.
Speaker System
The speaker system is very well-equipped, with the 40 watts of power significantly outpacing the less expensive Kawai KDP70 or similarly priced Roland RP102.
The KDP110 is also Bluetooth-compatible, which means that this will connect easily with any DAW program that has Bluetooth over MIDI compatibility. It also lets you use the KDP110 with Kawai zone, Sound Museum, and any other Kawai app that is built to be compatible with the KDP110 making navigation a breeze.
Responsive Hammer Compact II Action With Triple Sensor
The KDP110 uses an upgraded action from the action on the ES110, and this one has a tri-sensor. It’s a very sensitive action that is well-liked for its responsiveness and dynamic control.
In fact, in our opinion, it’s second only to Roland’s PHA4 action overall in terms of all of the piano actions featured on this list.
Summary
It's not particularly surprising that the 110 actually happens to be one of the most popular instruments that we sell here at Merriam even with advanced players needing a practice instrument, to the point that it's been extremely difficult to get in 2020 during COVID-19. Even if you have to get on a long waiting list, the KDP110 is more than worth the wait as it's easily one of the best pianos in its class.
Yamaha YDP144
Next on our list is the Yamaha  Arius YDP-144. The YDP series is their entry point into home digital pianos with full actions. They share many components with their portable counterparts the P series, as well as the DGX series, including action and sample sets.
Yamaha CFX Sound Engine
The highlight of the YDP-144’s sound engine is the default grand piano tone which is a sample of Yamaha’s flagship CFX concert grand piano. Like the Shigeru Kawai SKEX, the CFX is one of the world’s finest concert grand pianos.
It comes across very nicely here and is without question one of the best default grand piano tones on our list.
The total number of tones is light at 10, but all are high quality. The speaker power is also on the lower end for the class with 16 watts of power. Still, the YDP-144 is producing a great tone.
GHS Action
Yamaha’s go-to action in this range is the same one featured in the P125 above - the Graded Hammer Standard (GHS), a satisfying albeit more basic design than some of the others in this category (Roland and Kawai both offer triple sensors, and the Roland additionally has escapement & textured key tops)
Summary
For the price, it tends to be a nice balance for a lot of people and certainly compares very well against things like either the KDP70 or the Roland RP102.
Roland RP102
The Roland RP102 is next on our list. This is a home digital that's the baby brother of the Roland RP501, and a little bit lower priced than the Roland F140, but with a more traditional cabinet.
SuperNATURAL Piano Sound Engine
The RP102 takes advantage of Roland's legendary supernatural sound engine, which is something that they've been working on for well over a decade. This sound technology is a really interesting cutting-edge way in which to combine real samples with some synthesis on top to add all kinds of interesting nuance to the tone.
The only sound-related downside is the relatively weak speaker output at 12 watts of power, especially contrasted with the KDP110’s 40-watt speaker output for example.
PHA4 Action
Even with the increased cost of the RP102 over the FP30, the PHA4 action is still widely regarded as the best action in the class and still a great value at this price point.
The combination of triple sensor, escapement, and textured key tops has no peer in this class.
Summary
Being that it is Bluetooth-compatible, Roland has several apps that work with the RP102.
Overall, the RP102 is a great option, with the only real downside being its lower power speaker output.
Kawai KDP70
Very last on the list is the Kawai KDP70. This is the little brother of the KDP110 and takes away a few things that you would get on the 110, but also saves you a few hundred dollars. Really, you can actually think of it as the console home version of the ES110.
Harmonic Imaging Sound Engine
Like the ES110, the KDP70 has a version of the Harmonic Imaging engine that is built around the EX sample. This is still a great-sounding sample with 88-key individual sampling and 192-note polyphony, but you can hear that it’s not quite as nice as the SKEX sample on the KDP110.
The speakers come in at 16 watts which is tied with the YDP144 and actually better than the RP102, but still a step down from the KDP110.
Responsive Hammer Compact Action
This is the same dual-sensor version of this action that is also found in the ES110. A solid, reliable action, if not as sensitive as the RHCII or PHA4.
Summary
The other big difference from the KDP110 is that the Bluetooth functionality is not present on the KDP70.
That being said, all in all, this is still a well-built, high-value unit. In many ways, it's an excellent comparison to the Roland RP102. It looks fantastic in the home and slightly different sound than you would get from the Roland.

The Smile's 2024 Tour Rehearsal Setup
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On March 5 and March 6, The Smile shared photos taken by Ade B during rehearsals for the band's 2024 tour dates. In the photos, the band are set up in Air Studios’ Lyndhurst Hall. It's a space where Jonny has frequently recorded orchestras, including for the Phantom Thread soundtrack. A photo from circa-2014 revealed that Radiohead’s string arrangements for Spectre (and possibly Man of War) were also recorded in the room.
The Smile’s live setup largely resembles the one they used for their tour dates last year. This isn’t a surprise, since many songs from the band’s latest album were written on the road. However, there is some new gear which seems to be intended for material off the new album. Further down in this post, we’ll list all of the gear, but we’ll highlight the changes first.
Electric Cello and Viola
Almost certainly the biggest surprise is that Jonny has added an electric cello and an electric viola to his setup. In the past, Jonny has occasionally played bowed string instruments on recordings, but they were always acoustic instruments, and he's never brought them on tour. Most of the time, Jonny only used his viola to sketch out string arrangements, which were then recorded by other players. And at live shows, Jonny has always bowed his electric guitar or bass to emulate those string arrangements, whether it's the harmonics on Pyramid Song or the col lengo crunch on Burn The Witch.
However, Jonny has started to play the cello more regularly in the past few years. In an interview from the 2010s, Jonny mentioned that he could make noises that he’s happy with on a cello, but claimed his left hand isn’t precise enough to perform with it. Then in 2019, he mentioned that, compared to viola, the cello "feels much more natural to hold and so much easier to make a nice sound on — I only wish I had moved on to it when I was a kid” (The Times). In 2021, he was credited with cello in the liner notes for the Power of the Dog soundtrack, applying banjo-style technique to the instrument. And this year, he was credited with cello in the liner notes for Wall of Eyes. In fact, Jonny can be seen playing his acoustic cello in a couple of polaroids posted in March 2023, during the recording of the new album.
Tumblr media

Digital “Upright” Piano
On every tour since 1997, Radiohead have brought an acoustic upright piano on tour. Usually they brought a Yamaha U1, though more recently they’ve favored a Kemble KC121 (essentially a U1 built at Kemble’s factory in the UK, rather than by Yamaha in Japan). The same was true for Atoms for Peace shows in 2010 and 2013. The Smile followed this trend, bringing an acoustic upright along for all of their tour dates from 2021-2023.
However, given how few of the Smile's songs require piano, it’s understandable that they’d switch to a digital instrument instead. The one they chose is a Nord Grand digital piano, which features fairly authentic piano hammer-action made by the piano maker Kawai.
For some solo shows in support of Anima, Thom brought a Waldorf Zarenbourg for sampled acoustic and electric piano sounds. Thom only played it for a couple songs each night, so it was understandable that he didn’t want to tour with an acoustic upright. However, it’s interesting that The Smile are still using their vintage Rhodes electric piano, rather than using the Nord Grand for Rhodes sounds in addition to acoustic piano sounds. Perhaps keyboard action is the reason: the hammer action of the Nord might be accurate for piano, but it’s probably a little heavy for Rhodes playing. Plus it’s clear that the band enjoy having a lot of keyboard on stage to experiment with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Closeups showing the Nord Grand in its custom black stand.
Sequential Prophet 6
One benefit of the digital piano is that its shorter stand leaves space for a keyboard to rest on top. For this tour, Thom has brought along his Prophet 6, which he previously used for the Suspiria soundtrack and for shows in support of Anima. This isn’t the first time that the band have mixed piano and synth. Thom did velcro a Dave Smith Instruments Tetra to Radiohead’s upright piano from 2012-2013. However, that synth saw little use, perhaps because of the Tetra’s minimal control layout.
The band now have three Prophet synths in their active setup: the Dave Smith Prophet ’08 beneath the modular, the Sequential Prophet 5 REV4 on top of the Rhodes piano, and the Sequential Prophet 6 on top of the digital piano.
Earthquaker Devices Blumes
In addition to the Earthquaker Devices Plumes overdrive on Thom’s board (note the green), it looks like he’s added a Blumes overdrive as well (the similarly-sized yellow box). The Blumes is intended as a bass-friendly version of the Plumes. Thom was already using the Plumes with his bass guitar for a very punchy sound, so it’ll be interesting to see how he uses the bassier Blumes.
The green of the Plumes and yellow of the Blumes can also be seen on Thom’s backup pedalboard, which is resting on top of one of the gear cases by Thom’s guitar stands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Closeups of Thom's guitar and vocal pedalboards (left) along with his backup guitar pedalboard (right).
Eventide Pitchfactor
It looks like Thom has added an Eventide Pitchfactor to his vocal pedalboard. It's in the spot where he had an Eventide H9 on the last tour, so it's likely that he was using the H9 for pitch shifting sounds. The H9 features all of the algorithms from the Pitchfactor (as well as the other Eventide pedals), but it has far fewer knobs so controlling it is more cumbersome.

Fun non-cat-related fact but I played piano for a good 15+ years, even getting to play the Steinway UNICEF peace piano for a big thing (I was very young so I remember Big Expensive Important piano and someone was dressed as John Lennon to sing "Imagine" and little else). I always had my grandmother's piano, but lost it in Sandy, and now that my grandmother's passed, that bastard old Kawai that I learned on has to go in the trash.
ANYWAY I've been woefully out of practice for the last few years because I have suddenly run into some sort of piano drought where I don't know of a single piano to practice on.
I miss playing a lot and I've been longingly staring at Kawai digital pianos since the one I THOUGHT would come to live in my house is woefully waterlogged. Do I NEED a Kawai? No, honestly. Rolands and Korgs usually wind up being cheaper as far as digi-pianos go. Buuuut there's a sentimental side that loved my old Kawai (sorry mom-mom but I'm posthumously taking ownership of the now useless wood and metal that makes up that monstrosity in your living room and you can come fight me through the Ouija board if you don't like it) even though the keys stuck and I would dread an upcoming high F because that fucker hadn't worked since before I was born.

Second Draft 20 Elements Description
Canon Camera
The Canon 750D is a DSLR camera made by Canon, a famous Japanese company, released in February 2015. My parents bought it for me in 2018 for my photography class. It was a great budget to mid-range camera. It's important for my photography hobby, letting me capture and share moments. It's a reminder of my creativity and adventures, used in many places. It has enhanced my storytelling skills through creative digital tools.
Bible
This Bible, a black leather New International Version, was given to me by my parents after a Life Church conference in Auckland in 2017. It's essential for my faith and deepening my relationship with God in my Christian beliefs. It has accompanied me on mission trips, offering comfort and encouragement in daily life. It guides my values and understanding of God, strengthening my faith and teaching me about His characteristics. I also use it as a source of inspiration for design projects in my current church through bible verses.
Cross
The cross symbol's origin lies in Christianity, representing Jesus' sacrifice for our sins and his resurrection. As a Christian, my faith is rooted in this belief, influenced by my parents who are also Christians. The cross is a powerful symbol of love and salvation, frequently used in design to depict the free gift of life and a relationship with God.
AirPods
The AirPods, wireless earbuds by Apple, recently released the 2nd generation Pro series with improved sound and noise cancellation. I got them this year, upgrading from my 1st generation AirPod Pros. These earbuds are important for my music passion, aiding creativity in design and enhancing focus while reducing distractions.
Macbook
Apple's M1 MacBook, launched in November 2020, introduced Apple's Silicon Chip, enhancing overall performance. My parents gave it to me as a graduation gift, primarily for my design degree at university. This laptop is vital for my design work, serving as the main tool for creating designs, gathering information, and developing my creative skills through various tools and techniques.
Piano
The piano, invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in the mid-1600s, produces sound when its keys are pressed. This Kawai instrument was purchased by my parents in 2016 when my brother was learning to play. I use it occasionally to play worship songs for relaxation and enjoyment. It holds significance because my mother used to play piano in church, and I aim to share my musical gift for worship. The piano's versatility in different settings and genres parallels my desire for my designs to adapt to diverse environments and be inclusive.
Wall Art
The wall art in my room features Bible verses and prayers, reflecting my Christian identity. Passed down by my family, these pieces remain relevant. They not only decorate my room but also serve as reminders of my intimate walk with God. Hanging them on my bedroom wall symbolizes my welcoming of God into my sleeping space, offering comfort and daily peace. Each wall art piece is creatively crafted, telling its unique story. Just as these artworks convey my intentions, I want my designs to tell stories and help viewers understand the meaning behind each piece.
Coffee
Coffee is my preferred source of energy when I need to focus and complete tasks, even staying up late for work. Its aesthetically pleasing packaging and design inspire my own design work. Coffee aids in reflection and relaxation during stressful moments, while also boosting creativity and igniting my thinking process.
School YearBooks
I treasure school yearbooks as they hold memories of each passing year, showcasing achievements and photos from that time. Yearbooks feature diverse themes and unique styles, effectively narrating a story through visuals. I aim for my designs to similarly create a memorable and appreciated history.
Flight Tickets
Aviation holds a vital part in my life. Being an aviation enthusiast, I collect flight tickets from my travels around the world, including airlines like Turkish Airlines, Air New Zealand, and Singapore Airlines. I'm intrigued by the varied ticket designs reflecting each airline's branding, including colour schemes and content. This inspires me, as a creative, to maintain a consistent design system across various collaterals, even in the smallest details like an airline ticket.
FindGod Stickers
FindGod Clothing stickers are merchandise from an online Christian apparel shop, FindGod Clothing, dedicated to spreading the gospel of Jesus in New Zealand through clothing. I received these stickers with my clothing purchases, and I'm constantly inspired by their slogans and Bible verses. Each sticker employs a distinct color palette and typography to convey its message effectively. These stickers highlight the importance of sharing a message or raising awareness through a portable format while enhancing communication with unique designs.
FindGod Clothing
FindGod Clothing, launched in September 2022 by two young adults from the same church, was inspired by a vision from God to boldly express their faith. I've purchased several pieces from their online store over the past year and enjoy wearing them, spreading a message of love to those I encounter. These clothes are significant as they reflect my identity in Christ and encourage me to live out my faith without fear, inspiring me to consider creating my own Christian apparel brand in the future.
Pick Jesus Necklace
I frequently wear the "Pick Jesus" necklace, purchased from a friend at my church as part of his Cambodia Mission Trip fundraiser. Its design resembles a guitar pick with the humorous "Pick Jesus" text. The accompanying Bible verse offers encouragement to both me and those around me. I appreciate its simple, minimalist design, which aligns with my own design style.
Old Receipts
I've amassed a collection of old receipts from various stores I've visited. I'm captivated by the diverse typography and the layout of content on each receipt. These receipts serve as memory triggers for past purchases, ranging from inexpensive to costly. They also aid in expanding my understanding of composition and offer a glimpse into historical design trends.
Product Design Books
I have a collection of design books gifted by a family friend when I was about to start studying design at university. Although I wasn't sure about my design path, he gave me product design books. These books continue to inspire me with material choices, patterns, abstracts, and forms. They not only influence my graphic design work but also introduce product design principles into my projects, offering a new perspective and creative insights.
Birthday Cards
I have an archival box that I store items that holds dear to me. Inside includes hand written birthday cards that I have received from friends and families. These collections of Birthday Cards has emotional connections to it and it conveys the feelings in an artistic way and humours way.
Device Packaging
I'm a tech enthusiast and avidly collect packaging and boxes from the devices I've purchased. The diverse packaging designs from different companies, like Apple's clean simplicity or Oral B's busyness, fascinate me. I appreciate the various forms and sizes used to make products user-friendly and accessible. These packaging designs inspire me to think creatively and prioritize the user experience in my UI and UX design work.
Seashells
I'm an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys visiting the beach to collect unique and beautiful seashells. I'm captivated by the distinctive shapes and patterns of each shell. Many of these shells were gathered at Mairangi Bay Beach a few years ago. They serve as decorative elements, shaping the overall ambiance and aesthetic of my room. They also inspire my creativity by showcasing how natural elements can establish the atmosphere and style I'm aiming for.
Button Phone
The white Samsung button phone, released in 2012, features a tactile number pad and a small non-touch LCD display. I received it during a mission trip to Turkey, where personal smartphones weren't allowed. I appreciated the satisfying clicks and responses of the number and navigation buttons. Its compact form factor included essential tools. This object encourages me to reflect on and appreciate nostalgic designs of the past, inspiring me as a designer to create unique and different approaches to modern designs with a focus on tactile and intuitive user experiences.
Music Sheets
Music sheets accompanies the instrument and the musician to play a music piece. Music sheets are significant to me as it helps to learn and play Worship songs at church or at home during my own time. It's a supportive item to help what I needed to achieve. It helps me to get the tempo and rhythm correctly as the song intended to be. It helps me as a creative to have a systematic approach and finding tools to help and support me with my overall design idea.

Kawai CN29 vs CN39 Digital Piano Comparison, Review & Demo | Outstanding Value!
youtube
In this article, we'll be doing an in-depth comparison of Kawai CN29 vs CN39 digital home pianos. These instruments are the latest in a long line of CN Series digital pianos from Kawai; they’ve been durable favorites of buyers looking for an affordable instrument that still delivers an outstanding piano experience.
They've consistently set a new standard of what it means to be high-value for people focused on action and piano tone without spending on extra features that won’t receive that much use such as sequencers, arranger functions, or hundreds of sounds.
Kawai CN29 vs CN39 - Tone Engines & Sound
Let's start by looking at the sound system in these two instruments. Both instruments use Kawai's Progressive Harmonic Imaging, which is one of the latest versions of Kawai's sound technology. This engine features 88-note individual samples, plus additional synthesis happening on top with details like damper noise, damper resonance, string resonance, decay time, hammer delay, and fall-back noise, among other parameters. Differences start popping up when it comes to the polyphony.
The CN29 comes with a polyphony of 192, while the CN39 is equipped with slightly more at 256 note polyphony. 192 should be fine for most people, but if you're getting into lots of layering and arranging, the extra polyphony you get with the CN39 might be useful.
The default piano tone on each instrument is the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX sample set (the SKEX is one of the most popular choices at international piano competitions. There are some other grand piano sounds, such as the SK-5 as well their EX Concert grand piano which was the previous generation's default sample.
The SK-EX sample has a brighter sound than the SK-EX, which has a nice mix of warm mid-tones, with clear bright tones along with a Steinway-esque bass register.
When it comes to the speakers, there are two mains and two tweeters on the CN39 being driven by 40 watts worth of amplification. Interestingly, the CN29 also has 40 watts worth of amplification, but that's coming through just two full-range speakers.
You can definitely tell a difference when you're playing both instruments with more treble, and more tonal clarity in the sound out of the CN39. The speaker systems on both instruments were developed produced by Onkyo, which is a Japanese audio company that produces really great gear for home stereos and commercial installations.
This collaboration with Kawai is starting to show up in all sorts of instruments that they're coming out with, including in Kawai's flagship Novus series, and is also reflected in the Spatial Headphone Sound feature.
In terms of the other sounds, there is a huge difference in the number of tones that these instruments are loaded up with. The CN29 comes with 19 voices, all of which I would describe as pretty high quality, particularly the acoustic piano sounds and the electric piano sounds. The CN39 has all of the sounds that you'll find on the 29, plus the entire general midi 2 sound-bank, which brings the number of tones up to a robust 355.
Piano Action:
When it comes to the action, both the CN29 and the CN39 use exactly the same action - Kawai's Responsive Hammer III Keyboard Action (RHIII). You can also find this action in the top Nord stage pianos as part of a recent collaboration.
The RHIII action has a reputation within the industry for being super accurate, but also really comfortable and authentic with a realistic movement pattern. Now, this is not Kawai's wood key action as you need to get into the CA series for that.
That being said, the RH III plastic action is probably the most advanced plastic action currently on the market. It uses counterweights, a triple sensor, so the midi output on this is super accurate but it also uses an escapement or let-off simulation which makes it feel that much closer to an acoustic grand piano action, along with the ivory touch key surfaces.
Other Features:
When it comes to the features, one of the first things you'll notice is that the interface between these two pianos is completely different. If you didn't know that they were part of the same series, just looking at the control panel itself, you'd think it was a completely different line of the piano.
The CN39 is using a control interface with a high-resolution display that's very easy to navigate. The CN29 digital piano uses a simpler design but does feature a new Pixel OLED display as well. The design is sleek and very intuitive and even though there is a couple of layers to the menu. It's easy to access the virtual technician, transpose, metronome, four hands mode, and concert magic functions.
Kawai has also updated the lesson function with the number of books that they have preloaded into both pianos that are designed to work directly with different book series, with the 39 featuring twice as many books as the 29. Books featured include Beyer, Burgmuller, Chopin Waltzes, Czerny 30, and Alfred's Basic Piano Library Lesson Book Level 1a.
From a connectivity standpoint, they're both equipped with Bluetooth MIDI ( Ver. 4.1; GATT compatible), while the CN39 also has Bluetooth Audio for wireless connection to smart devices.
This makes both instruments compatible with the Kawai's Virtual Technician app, which allows for editing of all types of parameters including the key-off effect, minimum touch, reverb, soft-pedal depth, stretch tuning, temperament key, top board, and user key volume among others.
There's also a Virtual Technician Smart Mode with 10 presets.
Both pianos also have audio and USB ports. The CN39 has discrete ¼” stereo outputs that are separate from the headphone jacks. It also has USB audio recording as well as USB to host so that you can run wired midi to a computer. The CN29 also has the USB to host connection but lacks separate audio outputs.
Both instruments have the Grand Feel Pedal system, with full sostenuto and half-pedal adjust feature.
In terms of finishes, both instruments are available in both Premium Rosewood and Satin black, while the CN39 is also available in a Snow White with matching, built-in music rest.
Conclusions:
The Kawai CN29 vs CN39 digital piano deliver an outstanding value with some of the best action and piano samples for between $2000 - 3000 that the industry has to offer.
The construction is solid, and the authenticity of the piano playing experience will make this an appropriate choice for intermediate students, a practice or second instrument for pro-players, or even a teaching instrument.
If you're looking at a Yamaha CLP series and aren't familiar with Kawai, definitely give the CN series a try.

The Economics of Pianos
When I was 5 years old, my mother began to teach me the piano, which I strongly disliked. I also took lessons for a few years while hating every minute of it, until eventually I was allowed to move onto a different instrument. Years later and the piano is by far my favorite instrument, as it produces the most beautiful sound I have ever heard and playing it is one of my favorite pastimes. I live in a small space, so there is neither space nor the funds for an actual piano, so I make do with an old keyboard. Taking this class made me wonder about different piano producers, as well as how the market reacted to digital pianos (keyboards) since their introduction in the early 1980’s.
There are currently nine piano producers in the United States, with Baldwin Piano & Organ Co., Steinway & Sons, Yamaha Corp. of America, and Kawai America Corp. dominating domestic production. Korean companies Young Chang and Samick, as well as Yamaha and Kawai, are leading suppliers from Asia that import pianos into the US, though for some of these companies most pianos are manufactured on US soil in order to save on the cost of transportation, as though not as heavy as grand pianos (700-1200 lbs), upright pianos are still 300-500 lbs. The market for pianos is divided into 7 groups: parents of beginner piano students, parents of advanced piano students, married, young, childless professionals with dual income, adult piano students, professional musicians, educational and cultural institutions, and the hospitality industry. Each group looks for a different and specific type of piano at different qualities, functions, and most importantly costs. There are also demographic factors that affect the overall market size, being the number of children between ages 5-14 and the number of retirees. More children in the age group of 5-14 increases the size of the market as this is the typical age when children begin to play the piano, and a greater number of retirees in a given period increases the supply of used pianos and decreases the demand for new ones. This was especially evident in Japan as the aging population as well as a financial crisis caused a large increase in the availability of used pianos, and strong demand in the United States led to an increase of imports of these used pianos from Japan in recent years, from aforementioned companies such as Yamaha and Young Chang.
Interestingly and very different from my prediction, the emergence of digital pianos since the 80s came to represent an entirely different market, wherein these pianos are considered substitutes for vertical pianos for beginner-level consumers or to consumers who lack a strong preference. In these instances, the price is the only factor in purchasing. Because there is such a large disparity between musicians and music teachers that heavily prefer the quality, touch, and longevity of acoustic pianos and young people and beginners that like the technology and cheaper price, it appears that while electronic pianos are in demand as substitutes for acoustic pianos, they also represent a separate market. The greater availability of substitutes tends to make demand more price-elastic.
Digital pianos have gained market share at the expense of beginner-level acoustic pianos, though this trend has stabilized since due to the rising demand for acoustic pianos has matched that of digital pianos. In essence, digital keyboards appeal to a larger market of beginners and casual players with disposable income that do not know nor care for the quality of their piano, as opposed to the smaller and more passionate market of musicians and music teachers that specifically search for such qualities.

Week 8 - Elements Descriptions
Canon DSLR Camera
Canon 750d is a digital single-lens reflex camera produced by Canon, a well-known Japanese camera company. The Camera was released back in February 2015. This camera was purchased by my parents for me back in 2018 from Harvey Norman for my school photography subject. It was the one of the best Budget to Mid-range DSLR camera at that time. It is important to me because one of my hobbies is photography and I like to capture the moments in time and share them to the public. The camera reminds me of my creative and adventurous self. The fact that I have brought the camera to various locations and places that I have visited and travelled to. It has increased my creativity when it comes to storytelling through images and using creative digital tools to enhance the thematic idea.
Bible
This Bible was from a church conference that I attended back in 2017 held by Life Church in Auckland. The black leather New International version bible was given to me by my parents after the church conference ended. This object was given by my parents. It is important to me because it helps me with my faith and deepen my relationship with God. It is significant to the Christianity faith that I believe in. I have taken the bible to mission trips out in the middle east and the word of God comforts and encourages me in my day to day life. It shows me how I should live my life and how good my God is. It not only strengthen my faith but it also teaches me the characteristics of God. The bible helps me to create design projects for the church that I am currently in through words spoken by God.
Cross
The origin of the cross symbol is from Christianity. As Christians we believe that Jesus died on the cross to pay the price of our sins but on the third day, he resurrected and now there is life and that we now can have a relationship with God the father. This element was founded in my faith as a Christian. My parents are Christians so I have been exposed to Christianity since I was little. The Cross is a significant symbolic imagery widely used in design to show the love and salvation that was freely given to us.
AirPods
Airpods is a wireless earbuds from apple. The 2nd generation pro series was made earlier this year. It improves the sound and noise cancellation quality. The AirPods was purchased earlier this year to replace my older 1st generation AirPod Pro's. This listening device is significant to me as I have a passion for music and music helps me to unlock ideas and creativity within the design space. It also helps me to focus and not get distracted.
Macbook
Apple's M1 MacBook was released back in November 2020. The first Apple Laptop with Apple Silicon Chip which increases performance in every aspect. This Computer was gifted by my parents as a graduation gift. The main purpose for the device was to pursue my design degree at the university. This device is significant as it helps me to create and using tools for design. It is the main device where designs are being produced. The computer helps to gather information and design ideas where I can learn new tools and techniques to master and improve my creative skills.
Piano
The Piano is an instrument that produces sound when the white or black keys are being pressed. The Piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in the mid 1600's. (Yamaha.com) This Kawai branded instrument was bought by my parents back in 2016 when my brother was still learning the piano. I occasionally use it to play worship songs as a way to relax and have fun. This instrument is significant to me as my mother used to play piano at church and I want to pass on the gift that I have in music to Worship God. The piano can be used in various settings and playing different genres of music, in the same way I want my designs to adapt to various environments and be inclusive while being diverse.
Wall Art
The wall arts in my room are encouraging Bible Verses and Prayers that represents my identity as a Christian. The Wall Art was passed down by my family and it is still relevant to today. The significance of the Wall Arts not only decorates my room and make it look nice but it is also a reminder of my Walk with God as being intimate. Hanging the wall arts on my bedroom wall also shows that I welcome God to dwell in the place that I sleep in, which gives me comfort and peace on a day to day basis. Each Wall art are creatively crafted and drawn to show its character and tells its own story. I want my designs to be able to tell a story to my viewers and help them understand my intention behind each individual art piece.
Coffee
Coffee is my go to fuel when I needed to focus and get things done. It helps me to stay up late to finish work. Coffee is also known for its aesthetics packaging and design that helps to inspire me with my design work. Coffee helps me to reflect and calm myself down in stressful times. Coffee also helps spark creativity and ignites my thinking as well.
School Yearbooks
School Yearbooks is one of the memory objects that I still hold onto till today. The yearbooks shows the transition from one year to the other. Showing achievements and photos taken at that time period. School Yearbooks shows different themes every page with its own style and characteristics while telling a story through visualisation. I want my designs to create a history that people will remember and appreciate.
Flight Tickets
Aviation plays a significant part in my life. As an aviation enthusiast, I have been collecting flight tickets of planes that I have been on across the world. Airlines such as Turkish Airlines, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines to name a few. I am fascinated by the different ticket designs by different airlines. How different airline branding such as colour influences the content that is in the airline ticket. It inspires me as a creative to have a consistent design system in various collaterals even in the small details such as a plane ticket.
Stickers
FindGod Clothing stickers are a merchandise by FindGod clothing, which is a christian apparel online shop with its aim to spread the gospel of Jesus throughout New Zealand by wearing the clothing pieces. I have been given stickers as part of my clothing purchase. I am always inspired by the slogans and bible verses that are on it. Each stickers uses its own unique colour palette and typography to spread the message across. The stickers shows the significance of spreading a message or awareness in a form factor that is easy to put around while showing its unique designs to enhance the communication within it.
FindGod Clothing
FindGod clothing was first launched back in September of 2022 by two Young Adults from the same church. They had a vision from God to be unashamed of the Gospel and they started the clothing brand as an expression of the calling. I have bought a few pieces from them through their online website for the past year and I really enjoyed wearing them out in the world. Spreading the message of love to those I walk past. These clothing are significant to me as it shows the identity I Have in Christ and that I should not be afraid to living out my faith and sharing them to the people around me. The designs inspires me to create a clothing brand in the near future, focusing on christianity apparel.
Pick Jesus Necklace
One of the clothing accessories that I wear often is the Pick Jesus Necklace. Pick Jesus necklace was bought from a friend at my Church as part of his fundraiser to Cambodia Mission Trip. I very like the design as it represents a guitar pick and the word "Pick Jesus" it creates a humorous approach in conjunction with the design. Behind it is a bible verse to encourage not only myself but the people around me. I very like the simple approach the necklace has and it represents my style as a designer as minimalist.
Old Receipts
I have collected a bunch of old receipt that I got from various stores that I have been to. I am fascinated by the typography each store has and the composition/layout of the content within the receipt. The receipts creates memories of things that I have bought in the past. Some cheap and some expensive purchases. It helps me to expand my knowledge on composition as well as looking at the past and the historical designs that were made.
Design Books
I have a few design books that were given by a Friend who we visited as a family. He knew that I was about to study design at the university so he gave me a few design books for me to look and take inspirations from. At that time I wasn't clear which design pathway I wanted to take so he gave me some books of Product Designs. Even though I didn't take product design as a major, I am still inspired by the designs that many designers designed. The material choice, the patterns, abstracts and form not only inspires me as a graphic designer but it also unlocks a new perspective by incoporating principals of Product Design into my Graphic Design projects.
Packaging and boxes
I am a huge nerd when it comes to technology. I have been collecting packaging and boxes of devices that I have bought. I am fascinated by the different packaging designs that each product and company offers for its consumers. From the simplistic clean approach of apple packaging to the busyness of the Oral B packaging. I like the different forms and sizes that packaging has to present their product in a form factor that is user friendly and accessible. These packaging designs help me to think outside the box and focus on the user's experience when it comes to UI and UX.
Birthday Cards
I have an archival box that I store items that holds dear to me. Inside includes hand written birthday cards that I have received from friends and families. These collections of Birthday Cards has emotional connections to it and it conveys the feelings in an artistic way and humours way.
Seashells
As an outdoor person, I like going to the beach and collecting seashells that I find were unique and beautiful. I am fascinated by the form and pattern of each individual shells. Most of the shells were collected at Mairangi Bay Beach few years ago. The seashells helps decorates and sets the theme for the overall feel and look of my room. It helps me as a creative to find natural elements or elements in general that helps to set the atmosphere and the overall mood of the style that I am going for.
Samsung Button Phone
The White Samsung button phone was released back in 2012, it features a tactile number pad as well as a small lcd non-touch display. The phone was given to me during my mission trip in Turkey. We weren't allow to use our own personal smartphones so we had to use the button phones that were given to us. I very enjoyed the tactile buttons of the number pad and the navigation buttons. It has a satisfying click and response to it. I like the small form factor of the phone and it includes all the necessary tools to get things done. This object helps me to step back and appreciate the nostalgic designs in the past. It also helps me as a designer to create something that is different and unique to modern day designs and providing a tactile, intuitive approach when it comes to designing for the user's experience.
