thinking about my gavin parents earlier. specifically, karsten gavin and the way he loves klavier.

Karsten shows affection the only way he knows how (buying expensive lavish gifts) Karsten, being an absent father in many ways, doesn't pay much attention to his children's interests. Klavier becomes interested in music and wants a guitar for Christmas, he mentions this several times to Karsten as he works, over dinner, every moment he can get, really. Karsten and Karen have a fight 2 weeks before Christmas that leaves them very cold towards each other, Karin throws herself into social events/parties while Karsten flies to another place to focus on his work. The fight and their absence affect Klavier deeply, more than Kristoph who is growing more used to this. Karsten gifts Klavier an expensive piano, Klavier is disappointed and his face starts to show it. Karsten grows frustrated at this and starts to ramble “Music, right, liebchen? Didn’t you say you wanted to play?” “Well, ja, but… I wanted a…” Karsten starts frowning. “Klavier, do you have any idea how expensive this is? You don’t like it? Fine then, fine. Do you want me to throw my gift away for you, is that it?” “Of course not, papa. Klavier, what do we say?” Kristoph chimes in and nudges Klavier, whose eyes are starting to water. “[Thank you, father.]” “Oh there he is. Come, come.”

I’m having Gavin Family brain rot so here are my parent designs!

Starting with Katrin, my idea was that her personality largely resembles Kristoph’s. Working with the assumption that Kristoph has antisocial personality disorder, we know that susceptibility for the disorder passes through the maternal genes. I don’t think that either Katrin or Kristoph would be born with antisocial personality disorder. Both are victims of intergenerational cycles of abuse, which cause them to develop the disorder as a response to the trauma they received.

It is worth pointing out that antisocial personality disorder is a spectrum, as are all mental disorders, and ASPD does not make a person abusive, however, it will influence the way an abusive person abuses. In the case of these two, both are prone to manipulation. Katrin leans towards emotional manipulation, Kristoph leans more towards gaslighting and psychological abuse.

For those wondering, even though the terms are outdated and no longer used due to societal stigma, in a court of law both Katrin and Kristoph’s ASPD would be referred to as sociopathy; both would be considered sociopaths. However, the terms psychopath and sociopath overlap a lot and neither Kristoph or Katrin neatly fit under one or the other.

I also like to think that she has obsessive-compulsive disorder, although the symptoms lessened when she began to develop ASPD. I headcanon both of the two Gavin brothers as having OCD and I think their mother would be the genetic link for that.

Meanwhile, for Karsten, he was raised by very well known and praised defense attorneys, both of whom were demanding. He was raised very traditionally, however not necessarily religiously. Due to these beliefs, he was expected to carry on the Gavin family legacy despite the fact that he had no interest of having a family of his own or working in the field of law. After meeting Katrin, the two decided it would be most convenient for both of them to be married. Katrin, with the newfound status of being a Gavin, was able to quickly climb the corporate ladder and acquired her CEO position. Karsten began working for the company in the wake of his wife’s success.

The dude is very autistic, but refuses to get tested at all, rejects the entire notion. When his children began displaying signs of mental illness he purposefully ignored the signs and became more heavy handed. I like to think his special interest is something entirely out of character like makeup, or nail art.

In my personal opinion, Klavier shows a lot of the signs of autism, although that may be projection. I think that Karsten would not like Klavier in the slightest, especially because he sees a lot of his own symptoms in Klavier and thus he will never be able to live up to his standards.

Similar to what a lot of people in the fandom headcanon for the Gavin family, I believe that Kristoph would have been the primary caretaker for Klavier, despite both parents being present in their lives. I think that Kristoph initially moved to the United States to separate himself from his parents, and that Klavier followed suit not too long after.

Getting To Know...

Sandman Sleeps.

Floridian band Sandman Sleeps’ debut album, Crisis Actor, is effectively a “best-of” culled from a decade of songcraft. It’s an arresting, singularly evocative and authentic expression inspired by Pixies, Kate Bush, Talking Heads, and Tori Amos, yet not sounding like any of these–or anyone else.

The record’s dynamic arrangements and vocalist/guitarist Cristina Peck’s glacial, borderline Bjork timbre lead by the hand rather than beat over the head. There’s a subtle yet insistent power of suggestion in its soaring melodies, lurking basslines, and shape-shifting guitars. Pictures are painted as much by words’ sound as their literal meanings. Crisis Actor knows no boundaries and never panders, instead letting us run with its emotional hints to our own destinations, different on every listen.

We had a chat with Cristina all about how the band came to be, more about the making of Crisis Actor, future plans and more. Read the Q&A below.

Hi Cristina! How are you? For anyone reading this that may be unfamiliar with Sandman Sleeps’ music, please give us a bit of background on the band.

“Hello! Doing well, thank you. The band in its current form began March of 2020 when the four of us began to play together. Originally, the concept of Sandman Sleeps and a few of the songs began in 2009 with my sister, Alex, and I jamming in our home practice space/ garage with our friend (drummer) Gavin McAlexander. The old Sandman never got a chance to play live shows. We had about seven songs we had written and they had this raw post punk feel. It was exciting times creating them. I was 20 and Alex and Gavin were 15, I think we were a band for about 6 months before we split off into our different musical projects and other interests again. Then in 2019, Alex and I revived our old songs performing them live essentially for the first time at an open mic in West Palm- and then it was on! We were looking to form a full group and began the drummer quest. We played some shows and recorded two of our older songs with drummer, multi-instrumentalist and producer/engineer, Tom Haller. These songs titled, ‘Icy Jungle’ and ‘Your Specter’ are released on Spotify and all digital platforms as singles under Sandman Sleeps.

“Later in March 2020 we ran into some luck when Zack Jones (guitarist/vocalist who actually played a second guitar on ‘Your Specter’) joined the band and then introduced us to his good friend and drummer, Karsten Andersen. We found kismet between the four of us musically and personality wise as well. It’s been a lot of fun and a lot of work. Writing wise, I had accumulated a lot of songs I had written between 2009 and 2020 so we brought the ‘creme of the crop’ of those into the band and as well as the songs Alex and I had written together years back.”

You've just released your debut album Crisis Actor. What can you tell us about the record? We hear that it took a long time to complete! How does it feel to finally have your first body of work out in the world?

“It’s really very exciting! And yes, this record took a long time to make besides the fact that the songs were written over the course of 12 years- we had to switch studios a few times to find the right fit. The flow and sound made the most sense working with Nick Diiorio at Thunder House Studio in Ft. Pierce. Influence wise, we all really enjoy a wide variety of music and come from different musical backgrounds. For example, Karsten has played in mostly metal bands and also loves bands such as Missing Persons and Genesis, Zack for many years was the front man/songwriter of a popular Americana band, Gravel Kings, Alex loves rap music, besides 80’s hair metal and writes electronic music and makes beats. I love Tori Amos and Phantom of the Opera.”

Please take us through your songwriting/creative process for Crisis Actor. What did you love about it and what did you find the most challenging?

“Since the songs were written over the span of 12 years, the album veers pretty far from being a concept album, but there are recurring themes that may come up. As an album it works more as a dream world versus a chronological narrative. Process wise, some songs Alex and I wrote the music for together and some I wrote on my own, others we finished with the band. We’ve had a lot of time to sit with most of these songs and they have evolved also after being filtered through the other musical projects I have played in. What bonds the songs is the writing of everyone’s parts. We all have creative freedom in this department which creates the sound we have and also helps us learn from each other. The hardest part sometimes is figuring out stylistically what the songs should sound like. For instance, we play some songs on Crisis Actor pretty differently now as they’ve had more time to evolve. But this is inevitable and just makes live shows a little more exciting for us. Regardless, we are happy with the documentation of the ten songs on Crisis Actor.”

What do you hope fans/listeners take away from your music?

“I think for listeners to take anything away from the record in general would be considered a great accomplishment to us. Just to affect someone in some way even if it’s just for time they are listening makes me happy.”

Finally, what else is next for you? Will you be touring the record? If so, what can we expect from a Sandman Sleeps show?

“We do want to tour the record. Due to Covid we are just waiting to see what happens but plans for a tour are in the works. As of now we have been performing live at various venues on the east coast of Florida. We are very much a live band in all aspects. Live performance is probably where we excel best communicating whatever Sandman Sleeps is.“

Get Up Recordings label owner W. Jeremy is back again with a new EP titled “Phantasy”. The EP includes two original tracks and two pumping remixes from the multi-talented Canadian DJ/producer export Karsten Sollors and Chi-town’s Andrew Emil. W. Jeremy is a NYC based DJ/producer whose history of working for DJs and record labels in the ’90s – ranging from Angel Moraes to Tony Humphries – has greatly influenced his DJ sets and production/remix style. His Get Up Recordings label is also clearly influenced by his musical past as well, with a colorful spectrum of artists and remixers including Kim Ann Foxman, Tedd Patterson, MATRiXXMAN, Rennie Foster, Gavin Russom, and Snuff Crew. The EP kicks off with the original version of “Phantasy”, a bumping house jam with bass driven percussion and euphoric breaks. First up on remix duties is Karsten Sollors, who has earned the attention of electronic music’s finest thanks to a resume of well-rounded accomplishments. With releases on Toolroom Records, Nervous, and Farris Wheel Recordings, Sollors is breaking boundaries within the house music pool. Outside of the studio, Sollors’ profile has immersed itself across clubs since his relocation to Chicago. Playing alongside the likes of Jay Lumen, Sante, Gene Farris, and Nick Warren, he has dropped an immense collection of music at his Saturday Sound-Bar residency in Chicago and also regularly at Primary, Spybar, and Annex. His remix of “Phantasy”, much like his DJ’ing, brings a superb driving tech house element to the package. Next up on the remix end is Andrew Emil, who has been a well-respected fixture in Chicago’s music scene for over a decade and a half. A concert-trained percussionist, Emil eventually moved to Chicago to attend Columbia College and study audio engineering and music composition. Emil, who has been deeply entrenched in Chicago’s thriving house music scene since the 1990s, has a sound that reflects an eclectic and mature marriage of classic and contemporary elements of Chicago house, infused with jazz and soul undercurrents. Not only has he put out releases on some of house music’s most elite labels, including OM Records, Seasons, four play music, Farris Wheel, Gallery Music Group, Look At You, .dotbleep, Kompute, Roam Recordings, Industry Recordings, Classic, and Panhandle, but Emil remains one of Chicago’s most respected and lauded DJs. He is a Resident DJ at Nu: The Outer Space Disco Dancing Society of Chicago, 2016 Primary Nightclub, and a featured resident at First Saturdays at the legendary Gramaphone Records. His remix here is a full-on Chi-town funk jazz vibe and an ode to Strictly Jaz Unit, a collective that included members such as Boo Williams and Glenn Underground.
