Lair Review (PastPrologue, #34767)

You have a lair full of personality, and I love that. Varied types of dragons, all seemingly from different backgrounds, with different aesthetics and different stories. I know a lot of people aim for a “cohesive” lair, but I’ve always found myself drawn to lairs that have incredible amounts of diversity, especially in lore lairs. It makes everything seem like it has the potential to be so much more lively, thinking of all the different characters and how their differences would color their interactions, and I gotta say, I can’t wait to see what you’ll have going for you in your lair once you get done ironing out the fine details.

A troop of storytellers living in the middle of some ice caves seems like a lot of fun to work with.

I have a weakness for the intellectual type, and Rooibos definitely fits that bill. He’s such a dapper looking gentleman, with the crisp and scholarly sort of apparel that brings out his personality in spades. Even more so impressive is that you made pants work on a dragon which, at least in my opinion, is typically a cardinal sin. In fact, his outfit in general is an amalgamation of things that typically don’t work in outfits, layered together in such a manner that it offsets some of the odd “quirks” of the items in question. In particular, I think the use of the aviator bag as a belt to avoid the weird, unclean edges of the shabby waistcoat, and the bowman’s leggings are better spats than the actual spats on site!

That’s not even getting into his colors and genes. Rooibos has a comforting autumn flair to him and simplistic genes that keep him from being too, ah, “dazzle” for his own good. I’m especially fond of the way his rust shimmer does a miraculous job of tying together his primary and tertiary, acting as a gradient of the two, and the way his tiger primary softens the normally pronounced brow of the coatl artwork. He looks friendlier, happier, and far more cuddly than your typical feathered serpent.

Headcanon: The maladjusted son of a family of blacksmiths, Rooibos left his previous clan on good terms when he came of age and realized that hammer and anvil wasn’t exactly his cup of tea (see what I did there?). Hero is a perfect blend of Nature and Arcane aesthetics, and I can absolutely dig that. Everything about her screams elegance and potential danger, and I absolutely love the way you used her accent to tie together her Arcane eyes with the more natural, forest flow she has going for her. Her minimal apparel is actually a very wise choice on your part, as it keeps her beautiful coloration and genes from getting too cluttered, and the colors chosen for what little she wears are spot-on for helping the blue on her throat meld with the greens and violets she has going on.

And let me just say, that accent with her contour is absolutely genius. I had no idea she had contour at a glance, because the soil coloration blends right into her accent, making it seem as though it has spread beyond the original art. Just all around cleverly dressed and gorgeous dragon. A++.

Headcanon: The definition of a femme fatale, Hero is a Nature convert who came into her current clan after a rather painful battle during a dominance war. Having had limbs severed and bones broken, she’s used her inherent Arcane magic and what she’s learned in the Gladekeeper’s service to “rebuild” herself, in a manner of speaking. While not ill-meaning, she has a horrible temper and doesn’t suffer fools lightly. Her relocation to the Southern Icefield is mostly to save face; “unexalting” yourself from a goddess’ service is probably not the most honorable thing to do.

Spooky dragons are my bread and butter, and Glendower is hardcore my favorite of your lair in its entirety. His icy, undead eyes are a beautiful focal point to the skeletal markings given to him by his ghost gene which, if I may say, is the perfect match for his black primary. So many people aim for stark whites with ghost but antique does far more to match his paler belly and the splotches from his python. That, and I love the vibrance of his wings, which is not something I see very much with more ghastly dragons. It breaks up the monotony and catches the eye, not to mention gives him a delightful Halloween vibe.

And that’s to say nothing of his outfit. While I usually shake my head at using straight sets of apparel, and while the Conjurer’s Cloak (or any cloak) can make a dragon look cluttered, the whole ensemble just works on Glendower. The webs, the cloak, and the staff all seem integral to him and add to his personality, and when paired with the antlers and raider’s armwraps, make him look almost like some kind of shaman of the frozen mountains. Which brings me, to…

Headcanon: Glendower lives seperately from the clan in a cave in the Cloudscape Crags, and the clan lives in reverence of him. He can sense the spirits of those who are gone and draws answers from them for those who need them, and makes a meager living off of offerings and gold given to him in exchange for seances and advice. He’s quiet and contemplative and detached from those he helps, and seems to have more in common with the dead than the living who honor him.

Last, but not least, is my choice: Etude! He doesn’t seem finished (he still needs the wig) and he’s bogged down in all manner of apparel, but you know what? It works for him. The business of everything--his skincent, his apparel, his speckles and dots--just gives him a personality that immediately caught my eye. All of the colors match so well, and he’s somehow both a chaotic and calming dragon to look at. The whites and his beige and the blues and the creams are all just so mellow, but at the same time he just gives off the aura of a dragon that just needs to go, go, go!

The finished product you’re planning for him is wonderful, too, though it seems you’re almost there, sans his wig and his skin. Normally, I consider it an absolute shame to use a skin overtop a good dragon, but it certainly seems to be the thing that would tie the whole ensemble together to be absolute perfection.

Headcanon: Etude is a globe-trotting jack of all trades who probably has a contingency plan in place for every possible scenario, even the return of The Shade. If it can be done, he’s done it. If it can be visited, he’s been there. He’s upbeat and doesn’t realize that he’s constantly one-upping people and being more than a mite irritating, or that inserting himself into conversations because he overheard something familiar is rude.

I looooooove the lore, hot damn!! What a great way to accommodate the moves and the every-changing nature of clans! I also love the ill luck concept! It’s an interesting approach; mundane but unique!

I love how you haven’t dwelled on the tragedy of the lost or abandoned, it’s not heartless, but I didn’t have to sit through a tear-wrenching tale of tragedy. But on the flip side, it’s not all sunshine and cupcakes either, I AM VERY EXCITED TO GET STUCK INTO THIS!!

@cov-rising I’m sorry, I had to cut this one short because it is somehow now 6:30am and I need to start wrapping up to finish my shift!!

First Impressions:

Okay, wow. From your front page I thought I was going to be blasted to death by pinks and cuteness, but this is actually a pretty cool, relatively varied lair!! I like it!

Honey

Is this your Progen!? If it’s not, I basically hate you. Honey is GORGEOUS!! HOT DIGGETTY DAMN! Al those golds and yellows, absolute perfection!!I love the subtle greens in Sylvan Apparel and the Peace Dove! It blends in really nicely! And of course, matches the sprite perfectly!

I like that you’ve managed to keep the bulk of it within the yellow/gold range without making it look tacky or cluttered! Very, very well done! The accent compliments it all perfectly! LOVE IT!!!

Neria

Stop, STOP! What a perfect Mate for Honey! This is fantastic! The oranges and the golds with the contrast of the Midnight! The Candles match the midnight perfectly, I love it! I do feel like this one is not quite as perfectly balanced as Honey, but that kind of makes sense! If they’re both perfect then it would probably look more like twins!

Do you have any character or lore for these? Are they actually a pair or am I making incorrect assumptions? Also, the Reaper kind of makes it look like Neria is the more sinister of the pair, or maybe has a darker history, is this a correct impression?

Lucian, stop. No. This is freaking amazing! The colours, the Iri/Shim/Thyla that actually WORKS! I don’t know if I’ve seen that before! That accent is freaking PERFECT! I feel like the Golden Wing Silks doesn’t match quite as perfectly as I’d like, but there’s definitely nothing wrong with it! I wonder what he’d look like with the matching Ember dress and then more exposed wings? IDK my lair is a freaking mess so wtf do I know?

Love the Mith familiar with him, too! The purples in it are dang spot on! And so much gorgeous art! LOOOOVE!!!! “Atlas is a smart philosopher man with a beard and a bird” THAT IS THE BEST SENTENCE I HAVE EVER READ ON THIS DAMN SITE! 10/10 WOULD READ AGAIN!

Atlas looks PERFECT! He’s like this well-read, learned old kook who’s always got his nose in some book, tome or scroll. The Ethereal Ribbons really look like he’s gotten himself tangled up in some long, ancient scroll he was reading and just couldn’t be bothered untangling himself.

I get the impression he doesn’t even realise there’s a cat on his head, he’s just busy thinking about where he left that book he’d borrowed from some ancient library or temple that he seems to have misplaced.

But gurl, he is a philosopher with a beard, why is he covered in flower petals? Wouldn’t that piss him off? OR IS THAT PESKY BIRD GIVING HIM HELL!? IS THAT HOW HE GOT TANGLED IN THE SCROLL!?

Tea

Tea seems like she’d be the head of the clan…. But she’s not at the front – I always just assume that’s where the head goes.

So I have decided that Tea is not the leader, but is extremely up herself. Flaunting her golden spoils. Just look at the snobby way she’s got her head turned to get more light on her face, and that self-important smile.

JOKES ON YOU, TEA, THAT BIRD LOOKS LIKE IT’S ABOUT TO NEST IN YOUR PRECIOUS CROWN!! HA!

But seriously, I really love how nice and subtle this is. Tea has this almost oxymoronic shimmery, pastel look about her, I really dig it!

Essence

Um, excuse me, I’m pretty sure someone vomited pretty things on a gorgeous GenOne. IT’S A DOUBLE BLUSH, WHY IS IT COVERED IN LEAVES!!!

Okay, but seriously, I LOVE the colours, and Daisy Flowerfall, Crown and Peace Dove look absolutely FANTASTIC but I just wonder if the golds are a little too light against the Blush. Or is that something that changes once the gene-ing is finished?

Also, I just learned that a Pink-Tail Mole exists so thank you for that! It also looks fantastic with Essence’s colours! :)

Blossom

Why stop at 2 Flowerfalls? Why not get the Violet one going? While you’re at it – chuck some snowflakes and fire in there too! Screw it, grab those Festival Butterflies! Let’s just go all in here!

But seriously, dayum, you’re fond of the Flowerfalls, haha!

I actually really love Blossom! Especially the greens to compliment the Blush. 33KG HOLY FREAKING CRAP OKAY PUT ALL THE FLOWERFALLS, PUT EVERYTHING ON THIS OH MY GOD. JUST SELL EVERY OTHER DRAGON AND GIVE THIS EVERYTHING BECAUSE WOWEE THAT’S AN EXPENSIVE BABBY!

Were the Witch’s Cobwebs supposed to look like Moss? I hope so because that’s exactly what I see! Birds and moss and flowers floating in the breeze, little white butterflies resting on his limbs. Freaking gorgeous!

I don’t like the tail rings but I think that has more to do with the fact that I don’t like them in general! YOU MATCHED THE SPEEDY WITH HIM SO WELL! I LOVE THIS!!!

Bloom

Holy freaking cow. That is a lot of pretty things on one pretty, pretty Wildclaw! The Sylvan Wings and the Alchemist Tools work SO WELL together, holy crap! They compliment the Pistachio and the Spined Cobra SO MUCH!!!

I love the way the accent looks on the legs! I just wish there was some way to break up the green on the tail a bit? IDK

But uhm… I don’t mean to alarm you, but I think a tacky feather boa has somehow connected itself to this gorgeous masterpiece’s tail? :P

Honeysuckle

Okay, I actually really like the River Royalist Tail Rings on this one! Maybe I’m just extremely picky!! Honeysuckle looks absolutely fantastic!! Look how nicely the green highlights in butterfly work with the green in Spring’s Breath! The only thing that will forever shit me about Springs Breath is that green petal right on his thigh. WHY THIS, SPRING’S BREATH!?

Okay, so I like to make fun of girly things that I secretly love and that whole row are absolutely STUNNING but Hydrangea takes the damn cake!!! For one – way to nail Piebald! I haven’t seen Piebald properly utilized in a fairly long time so it’s really impressive how much you’ve nailed it! PLUS the wings of the fairies make it look like you’ve got Thylacine-like markings that actually spill into the secondary field and the tie the Skys in nicely! This is absolutely amazing!! I really love the tiny bits of gold from the Sky Blue Silks and the very discrete Clawtips! I didn’t even notice those till just now, THIS IS ACTUALLY PERFECTION, HOLY CRAP!!!!!!

Yet again, you’ve managed to match your familiar PERFECTLY! Amity is STUNNNNNNIIIINNNNNGGGG!!! What are your plans for the primary? I kind of hope you ditch the sylvan on it’s neck and chuck in another Piebald HINT HINT!!! But again, customisation is lovely AND I SEE YOU’RE BRANCHING OUT A LITTLE WITH YOUR DUAL FLOWERFALLS NOW!

I really love how discretely complimentary the Cobwebs are, and what a surprise it is when you finally notice the Tail Jewel, so many hidden little treasures here! I love it!

Get out. You have no business here anymore. I’ma need you to just pack your things and exit this site, this is too much. You have too many amazing gems in here (that I’m sure you worked extremely hard for, but I’m still going to be ridiculously jealous!)

How GREAT does Oilslick look with the cream!? It’s perfect! Like, if the Tert was much darker than that, it might have come off a little too Pastel Goth and then seemed forced with the Antique Lace, but Oilslick Glimmer comes out just brown enough and with just enough highlight to perfectly compliment the antique and cream! LOOOOVE IT!

And once again you’ve matched the familiar freaking perfectly, even the Accent creates the ultimate perfect match!

Laurel is gorgeous to the point that I feel like you could make a real life porceline statue and people would display it in there homes or gardens loll.

I felt like someone was asking what it is I do that I am so rich in treasure in my vault.

I set up a system as there is a reason why Arialya is my Banker (because during May I spent all my treasure on Arialya's apparel to the point of being broke in one day)

Now doesn't it suck after you purchase X that you are below the daily bonus of 2000 treasures? (Oh yeah it always sucks after I make a payment for Lair space except when I sold the Phantom Gene where I had 100000+ left over.)

As one person in the forums wrote it better "As Arcane we are among the poorest because we don't dominate often and almost always have to pay Lair Space in full price" (Although we have the some of the highest members we each have to exalt much more extra compared to other flights).

So what did I do? Set up a system on how I spend treasure and Vault.

Originally this was the treasure I would set aside in order to purchase a Glimmer Gene for Treasure in AH for my Progen but now that I have the treasure I ask myself if it is really worth paying up for that Gene when it is basically the price that Lair Space is now. That's why I would save between Treasure and Gold to see which one would make it to the goal first.

So first: I put 100000 treasure in the vault and I always have to do this regardless of which day it is. (Originally my deadline was Saturday because Sunday starts the week again but now the deadline is as fast as I can)

Just to clarify it's not 100000 per day (No, and I don't recommend doing this).

It's 100000 per week.

Next up is purchases.

Although I do have my down days where I impulsively spend treasure when not feeling well. The gist is: I can only purchase 1 thing for the week that is above Lucky Streak.

Things that are under it? Like 50000? Yeah. 40000 yeah. It just can't be over 75000 from lucky streak.

"But then how will you finish your gene projects?"

Dude. I've been on this site for 3 years.

Staff updates with unexpected genes in some months. I know this because most of the dragons I buy for Festivals are based on genes that were recently added (hence why I buy dragons more for aesthetic with genes than to overdress them in like 20 layers of apparel) I buy them based on the gene I don't have or was recently added and by the time the festival starts too much breeding has been done with those genes to lower the price value of some dragons that are triple gened. I don't need to hurry up and gene a dragon right away and spend treasures when then I look at the update and scry my dragon with new gene and *weeps* it's so much better *cries*. (Like thank you staff for giving me a better gene I love for my earth week project. Please give a better tert for modern breeds too).

If I wasn't just loging in, feed, dragon, and actually gave my progens genes already? I would have been weeping when the genes they have now took a span of one 1-2 years for it to be released.

As I said before. The only constants in this game that don't change no matter what is: Lair Space and the addition of the Hibernal Den now.

You can change the dragons or get new ones as much as you want but in the end Lair Space and Hibernal Den are the must have and no matter what will always stay the same after you unlock all slots, tabs, (nests are optional for me because I don't have many breeding pairs and went without breeding for years on purpose because I didn't like having to exalt the babies since all I did was log in gather and feed dragons.)

Is it slow? Yes... but... my lair has no lore. All it has as lore is dragon's daily tasks and the objectives for the week. I don't really like showing off scry plans although I do list the genes I need for the dragons because I forget the scry plans a lot. That and an apparel that I have to wait for Night of the Nocturne to brew if it comes back because that price is yikes even if understandable.
