'How do you run your business?' I was asked recently...⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I try to run my business in the only I know, with a keen eye on the numbers, a focus on strategy but also with an emphasis on how things feel... the word authentic has certainly been overused but I like things to feel right to me. ⠀ Inevitably I have made mistakes but I try to learn from them every single time...⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I try to run my business in a way which feels like me. Taking a bit of time to learn and unlearn, and educate myself, to put myself in the shoes of others, to feel the outrage, to mourn what I thought was a society which had improved, to think about what I can do to help, in some small way. ⁠⠀ I'm currently reading 'Brit-ish' by Afua Hirsch which I can highly recommend if like me you're not sure where to start. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I've also bought a few other books to read next such as 'Why I'm no longer talking to White People about race.' by Reni Eddo- Lodge & 'White Fragility: Why It's So Hard For White People to Talk About Racism' by Robin Di Angelo. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Its unsettling realising just how easy my life is compared to so many of my peers who have to deal with consistent racially motivated barriers. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I remember the boyfriend of a friend whilst at uni making a racist joke. I said in front of the group he told it to, 'Wow I didn't realise you were racist.' He of course said he wasn't, it was 'just a joke'. ⁠⠀ I disagreed and we stopped being friends. ⁠⠀ His girlfriend who was my original friend, we stopped being friends too.⁠⠀ Hard to come back to a friendship once you call someones boyfriend racist.⁠⠀ Good riddance. ⁠⠀ But its not just about those overt displays of racism. ⁠⠀ I know that. ⁠⠀ And I don't share that story for a pat on the back. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I share it because what's going on beneath our noses runs so much deeper than a stupid 'Im not racist' racist joke. ⁠⠀ I know enough not to share just my outrage. ⁠⠀ That my tears are not the point. ⁠⠀ That it's not about me. ⁠⠀ But I know that my silence is deafening. ⁠⠀ So I just wanted to say something even though I don't have the answers and even if what I've said is wrong. ⁠⠀ While I learn and listen, I’ll be muting this account until 7th June. ⠀ ⠀ #juliemichaelsenphotography #blacklivesmatter ⠀ #amplifymelanatedvoices #mutedbutlistening https://instagr.am/p/CA7IF8FB41p/
