September NPD: Grand Theft Auto 5 Sales Boost Industry [UpdateSeptember NPD: Grand Theft Auto 5 Sales Boost Industry
It's a good thing for everyone! According to the NPD Group, the videogame industry's performance in physical retail increased by 27 percent year-over-year for September. $1.07 Billion this year compared to $848 million in the previous year.
Predictably, the majority of that boosted income was derived from the software segment, also referred to as "where all that Grand Theft Auto 5 money is kept." New physical sales of console and portable software during September totaled at $754.3 million, a 52 percent increase from the $497.5 million earned during the same period last year. GTA 5 understandably tops the list of the top 10 September-selling games and is followed by Madden NFL 25 and NBA 2k14.
The period's hardware sales generated $183.2million which is 13 percent lower than the September 2012 numbers. The Nintendo 3DS was the fifth month as the best-selling product in the category, while Wii U sales increased "more than 200 percent" over August, however Nintendo has not provided specific figures for the number of Wii U boxes that works out to.
The PlayStation 3 broke the Xbox 360's long-running streak and was the top-selling console for the period mostly due to the system's available Grand Theft Auto 5 bundle as per NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan.
The Accessories segment, which includes gift cards and digital currency vouchers as well as Skylanders/Disney Infinity figures, was flat year-over-year with only a 2 percent increase in sales to $142.3 million.
Update: Microsoft has commented, noting that the company sold 80 million Xbox 360s to retailers across the globe in September. The console's sales totaled $401.2 million. minecraft-servers Unable to say the Xbox 360 was the No. one selling console in the month of March, Microsoft instead says that it was the most popular console in the US in 2013. Nintendo 3DS Remains No. 1, Wii U Responds to Price Cut
Nintendo enters the critical sales season of the holiday season with great momentum as Nintendo 3DS ended up as the top-selling video game console in the U.S. for the fifth consecutive month and Wii U enjoyed new momentum after the price cut.
On October. 15 Nintendo announced that Pokemon X (and Pokemon Y) launched worldwide on Oct. 12. They sold more than 4,000,000 units in the first two days. The next NPD Report will include the complete breakdown of U.S. sales as well as a comprehensive review of the new Nintendo 2DS handheld. Nintendo 3DS gamers have two exciting games in the works, the Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds, and Mario Party: Island Tour.
On Sept. 20, Nintendo reduced the price of the Wii U Deluxe Set by $50 to the suggested retail price of $299.99 and also launched a limited-edition bundle that features a download code for the digital version of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. The sales of Wii U hardware in September were up by more than 200 percent over sales in August and this is despite just 15 days of data reported at the new price. In the coming weeks and months, Wii U fans can anticipate playing Wii Party U (Oct. 25), Wii Fit U (Nintendo eShop ), Nov. 1) Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games (Nov. 15) and Super Mario 3D World (Nov. 22).
*Data on physical sales of games in September comes from the NPD Group. Data on digital downloads of games, the combined digital and physical lives-to-date figures, and data regarding digital games are from Nintendo's internal sales figures. Except for the exceptions, all numbers are specific to the United States.
