Vivo Teaser
Vivo follows the titular kinkajou, voiced by Lin-Manuel Miranda, "who must find his way from Havana to Miami in order to deliver a song on behalf of his beloved owner and mentor Andres,” voiced by Juan de Marcos Gonzáles. (Netflix)
Vivo features original songs by Miranda and a score by Alex Lacamoire. Kirk DeMicco and Brandon Jeffords direct from a screenplay by Quiara Alegría Hudes. In addition to Miranda and Gonzáles, the film also stars the voice talents of Gloria Estefan (Marta, the love of Andres' life), Ynairaly Simo (Gabi, Andres' grand-niece), Zoe Saldana (Rosa, Gabi’s mother), Michael Rooker (Lutador, a villainous Everglades python), Brian Tyree Henry and Nicole Byer (a pair of star-crossed spoonbills), Leslie David Baker (a Florida bus driver), and Katie Lowes, Olivia Trujillo, and Lidya Jewett (a trio of scout troopers). The film will release on Netflix “soon.”

I was wondering something about spanish surnames. Beinging up Ernesto de la Cruz as an example. Is "de la" common? Like could have been it Ernesto de la Gonzales, or de la Garcia, or a different surname? Is there any influence to why it's Ernesto de la Cruz, and not just Ernesto Cruz?
Okay so bear with me because this is kind of a complicated and there’s a lot of nuance in all of this that I can’t properly get into or explain every single bit of it 100% so this is kind of a very rough overview.
So, no, you wouldn’t see “de la Gonzalez” or something like that. The surname González is one of the patronymic surnames in Spanish which generally implies that at some point there was a guy named Gonzalo in the family line because it means “son of Gonzalo”. The same is true of Hernández / Fernández which is either son of Hernán or Fernando, or Martínez “son of Martín”, or Rodríguez “son of Rodrigo”, and Márquez being “son of Marco”.
Nowadays, Spanish patronymics are different. But this was especially helpful in a time where a lot of the common people didn’t necessarily have surnames.
-
When it comes to prepositions, there are two main reasons you see the de used.
The first is what’s known as a “nobiliary particle” which is something you see across most European languages. These are particles that indicate someone comes from a noble family and they’re often a feature of the longer names, either for the aristocracy or the upper middle class, and I believe these sometimes extended to the military and some members of the clergy.
This is very common in the aristocracy so for example Juan Carlos who was the King of Spain comes from the House of Bourbon so his surname is de Borbón. People who hold titles or who are hidalgos often have a name like this. There are also various historical figures who have names like this especially the conquistadores like de Balboa or de Soto and so on.
These nobiliary particles show up in other languages like de, da, di, von, van and so on.
The other time you see a particle is what’s called a “toponymic surname”. These are surnames that come from place names or general geographic features or landmarks.
A famous one is Santa Teresa de Ávila which is “Saint Teresa of Avila”, since she was from the city of Avila
But other common toponymic surnames include names like de Soto [thicket], de la Vega [prairie], de la Torre [tower], de la Fuente [fountain/spring], del Monte [mountain], del Bosque [forest/woods], de la Selva [forest], del Río [river], de la Garza [heron]
And there are toponymic surnames that come from cities or place names; de Montenegro, de la Cruz, de Córdoba, de Torquemada, de Santa Cruz, and many others.
In general if you’re seeing a de used, it’s probably toponymic rather than a noble name. But sometimes the original idea has been lost. Obviously de Córdoba is the city of Cordoba, but de la Torre is less specific. Also sometimes the surname is in plural form like de los Ríos or de Ríos. And in some cases the toponymic is religious in origin.
...
So to answer your question; Ernesto Cruz and Ernesto de la Cruz are both valid names. One would assume that at some point de la Cruz came from a city called La Cruz though, or that they were near a church or convent and the “cross” name kind of stuck... but today there’s not really a difference except that they’re different surnames... In other words, Cruz and de la Cruz are to be regarded as separate and not interchangeable, even though there’s an obvious similarity.
Today the surnames mean a little bit less than they did because most people aren’t nobility and because most people have a surname they were born with, and they don’t usually have anything to do with where we were born or what our jobs are... but they could have meant something long ago.
And there are still some politics with names and naming policies particularly in Spain, but that is a whole other topic.

Basquetbolistas queretanos suman medalla en Nacionales
Tumblr media

An abuse of press freedom or a law we need to follow?

There are big questions rose after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC)  issued a cease-and-desist order demanding ABS-CBN Corp. immediately cease all broadcasting. It is an order that dictates any form of broadcasting made by the network will be recognized as illegal or suspicious.
Is it an abuse to press freedom? Or just a law we need to follow? Does history repeating itself?

Prior to the 2020 shutdown of ABS-CBN it also happened way back the 23rd of September year 1972 when Former President Ferdinand E. Marcos declared “Martial Law” which forcefully closed different radio and television stations including newspapers except others who’s in favor of the President which excludes the stated network (ABS-CBN).

After receiving the cease-and-desist order given by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), ABS-CBN released a statement which gave importance on providing crucial and timely data for the people amidst the pandemic happening in the world. House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano gave an assurance to the network that there would be no move to shutdown it. Regardless of the situation, the network still made ways to provide information to the public which clearly their right.

After the expiration of franchise in May, the network had been forced to off air. July 10, 2020 is the second time that ABS-CBN had been shut down by the government. This issue really contradicted the freedom of the press as accorded in Constitution Section 4, Article III of the Constitution provides that “No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances.”

A big number of Journalist and Human Rights groups pummels the dismissal of ABS-CBN having numerous lives influence by it being shut down. It maybe a “grievous attack on press freedom”, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) expressed also stating that this event demonstrates that we are beneath a de facto military law (Martial Law) that abuses human rights most especially the freedom of the press. They believe that the shut down of the network would affect many lives of Filipinos most especially the ones who lives in far and isolated areas that depends on ABS CBN radio and television stations. This will not just deprive the people’s freedom of the press but also their right to information and entertainment.

The first announcement of cease-and-desist order of the big media (ABS-CBN) caused a lot of rallies and protests towards the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and the government itself starting with the #NoToABSCBNShutdown which became trending on all social media platforms most especially on Twitter. This hashtag trend also made way for different hashtags like defending press freedom and support to the existence of the network.
After 2 months of being temporarily shut down, the franchise renewal of the network heard 13 times in the Congress considering the last hearing as the decision if they would allow ABS-CBN to renew their franchise or not.
The request for renewal of franchise of ABS-CBN Corp. was denied by the House of Representatives Committee on the 13th Hearing, July 10, 2020.
The Technical Working Group who evaluated whether the ABS-CBN should still be given a renewal or not released numerous things on why they recommended to deny it.

Lopez's double citizenship
As indicated by the TWG report, Lopez is a double resident, both a characteristic brought into the world Filipino and an American resident. It referred to a protected arrangement expressing that "double devotion of residents is hostile to the national intrigue and will be managed by law".
Tumblr media

Compártelo: Read the full article

His most recent book, Basta Trip Mo, shares varied suggestions on making your travel meaningful and worthy. One important tip on his list is how to save money for your dream travel. “Traveling starts from your payday. You can start saving, say, P1,500 every payday and in a month, you have P3,000. By December, you already have that amount enough for your travel.” Let's not forget, that this happening was also Enchong Dee’s birthday. No wonder were giant E’s at the entrance. We all sang the happy birthday song and blow the candles on our Fernando's Bakeshop and Goldilocks cakes, as a tribute to this Kapamilya actor. "To all who attended and helped :) Thank you for making this surprise birthday party a success," he said. Cheers!

Bongbong, Sara still leading Pulse Asia’s pre-election survey
Bongbong, Sara still leading Pulse Asia’s pre-election survey
MANILA – Presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and running mate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte are still the Filipino people's top choice as the country's next president and vice president based on the latest survey results of Pulse Asia Research, Inc.
According to Pulse Asia's latest Pulso ng Bayan pre-electoral national survey conducted from Feb. 18 to 23, Marcos solidified his lead by posting a 60 percent voter preference, pulling ahead of his closest rival by a 45 percent lead margin.
Way behind Marcos are Vice President Leni Robredo, who posted 15 percent, followed by Isko Domagoso with 10 percent, Manny Pacquiao with 8 percent, and Ping Lacson with 2 percent.
Other presidential aspirants Faisal Mangondato earned 0.4 percent, Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino (BMP) chairperson Leodegario de Guzman (0.1 percent), and Dr. Jose Montemayor Jr. (0.01 percent).
Former presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella and former Department of National Defense (DND) secretary Norberto Gonzales receive essentially no support from the country’s electorate, according to Pulse Asia.
“The rest of likely voters are still undecided about their choice for president in May 2022 (3 percent), refuse to identify their preferred presidential bet (0.4 percent), or are not inclined to vote for any candidate for the post (1 percent),” it added.
The Pulse Asia survey also showed Marcos’ continued dominance in all major voting areas, where he even gained more support in some locations.
In the National Capital Region (NCR), he posted a 66 percent voter preference, a jump of 9 percent from 57 percent in January of this year.
Marcos' voter preference of 68 percent in Mindanao also showed a 2 percent increase, up from 66 percent in January 2022.
Meanwhile, Marcos’ voter preference in other areas remained ironclad, with 58 percent in Balance Luzon and 53 percent in Mindanao.
According to Marcos’ camp, the Pulse Asia survey results confirmed that the “Solid North” voting bloc remains united behind the presidential bid of Marcos.
Marcos posted 74 percent in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), 82 percent in Ilocos Region (Region 1), and 86 percent in Cagayan Valley (Region 2). On the other hand, Robredo only had 1 percent in CAR, 7 percent in Region 1, and 6 percent in Region 2.
In a statement, Marcos’ spokesperson Vic Rodriguez thanked the Filipino people “for their unwavering trust in the leadership capabilities and competence” of Marcos “to lead us through this most challenging period of our history.”
“The result of the Pulse Asia survey has again debunked the fake narrative being forced by some small segment of our society on the current sentiments and vote preference of us, Filipinos,” he said. “While some of them may claim that they are winning in ‘Twitter’ and ‘Google’ searches, frontrunner Bongbong Marcos is winning the battle with the Filipino people.”
Sara gets 53 percent voter preference
Majority of the country’s likely voters are inclined to elect Duterte as the next vice president, garnering 53 percent voter preference.
Senate President Vicente Sotto III got the highest support of 24 percent followed by Robredo’s running mate Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan with 11 percent, Dr. Willie Ong (6 percent), Buhay Party-list Rep. Lito Atienza (1 percent), Manny Lopez, and Walden Bello (0.1 percent each), Carlos Serapio (0.01 percent), and Rizalito David who did not receive support from the respondents.
Duterte garnered registered voter preference of 82 percent in Mindanao and 48 percent in NCR, 41 percent in Balance of Luzon, and 51 percent in the Visayas.
Meanwhile, broadcaster Raffy Tulfo is still the top choice for the Senate with 66.9 percent voter preference followed by former Senator Loren Legarda (58.9 percent), former Public Works Secretary Mark Villar (56.2 percent), Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri (50.5 percent), and former Senator Chiz Escudero (49.8 percent).
Completing the top 12 of the senatorial race were actor Robin Padilla (47 percent), former Vice President Jejomar Binay (46 percent), Senator Sherwin Gatchalian (45 percent), Senator Joel Villanueva (42 percent), former Senator Jinggoy Estrada (39 percent), former Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista (33 percent), Senator Risa Hontiveros (32 percent), and former Senator Joseph Victor "JV" Ejercito (32 percent).
Pulse Asia Research said it undertakes pre-election surveys on its own “without any party singularly commissioning the research effort.”
A total of 2,400 adult respondents participated in the face-to-face interviews conducted by Pulse Asia.
Results of the survey have a ±2 percent error margin at the 95 percent confidence level. (PNA)
