HBO MAX! Back at it!

After it’s lengthy purge of animated series over the summer, HBO Max has decided to part ways with half a dozen animated features meant to come to the platform in the future. 

Though Warner Bros has confirmed the titles are still continuing their production they will not be coming to HBO Max. Titles include -

Batman: Caped Crusade - the buzzy reboot series from Batman: The Animated Series creator Bruce Timm, blockbuster maker J.J. Abrams and The Batman director Matt Reeves

Merry Little Batman – Family action-comedy special executive produced and directed by Mike Roth (Regular Show) from a screenplay by Morgan Evans (Earth to Ned).

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie – Porky and Daffy’s sci-fi buddy comedy, executive produced by Pete Browngardt (Looney Tunes Cartoons) with Alex Kirwan (Looney Tunes Cartoons) as supervising producer and Kevin Costello as writer.

Did I Do That to the Holidays? A Steve Urkel Story – An animated movie musical return for the iconic sitcom character, written and exec produced by Wyatt Cenac with Bryan Newton (Rick and Morty) as supervising director.

The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie! – A feature-length adventure from Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, in which a superfan opens a portal to Gumball’s cartoon world. Directed by series creator Ben Bocquelet from a script written with Shane Mack (Coffee & Kareem), exec produced by Sam Register, Vanessa Brookman and Sarah Fell.

Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Tunes Musical – Meant to be the first-ever LT musical, announced in June. Screenplay and lyrics by Ariel Dumas (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), music and orchestration by Tom Kitt (Next to Normal), with Brandon Jeffords (Vivo, Smurfs: The Lost Village, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) as director and supervising producer and Sam Register serves as EP.

Vivo (2021)

My rating: 7/10

Turning a kinkajou from a delightfully odd-looking critter into a generic cartoon monkey seems like a mistake, and there are some parts of this movie that are seriously annoying, but overall it's pretty good - the songs are very Miranda, for better or worse (I happen to lean towards "better", but your mileage may vary), the script is serviceable "bring the macguffin to the place in time" stuff, and there are some really nice visual flourishes. Plus it does yank the heartstrings quite effectively, so that's nice.

Sony Animation’s Lin-Manuel Miranda Musical Pic ‘Vivo’ Headed To Netflix

Netflix has licensed all global rights, sans China, to Sony Pictures Animation’s Vivo. The movie, directed by Oscar nominee Kirk DeMicco (The Croods) and co-directed by Brandon Jeffords (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2) with new songs written and performed by Tony-winning Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, was recently scheduled for a theatrical release on June 4. The new drop date on Netflix is still to be determined.

Vivo follows a one-of-kind kinkajou (aka a rainforest “honey bear”), voiced by Miranda, who spends his days playing music to the crowds in a lively Havana square with his beloved owner Andrés (Buena Vista Social Club’s Juan de Marcos González). Though they may not speak the same language, Vivo and Andrés are the perfect duo through their common love of music. But when tragedy strikes shortly after Andrés receives a letter from the famous Marta Sandoval (Grammy-winner Gloria Estefan), inviting her old partner to her farewell concert in Miami with the hope of reconnecting, it’s up to Vivo to deliver a message that Andrés never could: A love letter to Marta, written long ago, in the form of a song. Yet in order to get to the distant shores of Miami, Vivo will need to accept the help of Gabi (newcomer Ynairaly Simo) – an energetic tween who bounces to the beat of her own offbeat drum.

Vivo is written by DeMicco and Pulitzer Prize winner Quiara Alegría Hudes, who wrote the book for Miranda’s Tony-winning Broadway musical In the Heights.

Vivo (Stimme im Original: Lin-Manuel Miranda) ist ein Kinkaju, auch Regenwald-Honigbär genannt, und führt ein glückliches Leben in Kuba: Gemeinsam mit seinem geliebten Besitzer Andrés (Juan de Marcos González) macht er jeden Tag Musik auf einem belebten Platz von Havanna für die vorbeiströmenden Menschenmassen. Obwohl Vivo und Andrés nicht dieselbe Sprache sprechen, harmonieren sie perfekt miteinander. Doch dann erhält Andrés eines Tages einen Brief von der berühmten Sängerin Marta Sandoval (Gloria Estefan), die ihn zu einem Abschiedskonzert nach Miami einlädt, kann allerdings nicht mehr selbst die Botschaft überbringen, die er seiner alten Partnerin sein ganzes Leben lang überbringen wollte: einen Liebesbrief in Form eines für Marta komponierten Liedes. Also macht sich Vivo kurzerhand selbst auf den Weg nach Miami, wobei er sich auf die Hilfe der jungen, temperamentvollen Gabi (Ynairaly Simo) verlassen kann.
