Mushy feelings over being promoted <3

Moving up in rank today gave me a lot of feelings, and i know it's pretty silly to gush about them... but it made me feel really good :)

((Putting it behind a cut because it's long and mushy and full of feels <3))

I've been thinking about it a lot today, and kind of realized something (that i'm probably going to mess up explaining, but we'll see...) that made a lot of sense...

See, to me -- becoming a part of staff, is a lot like going to a Christmas Dinner with your family, and getting to sit at the "Big Kid's Table" for the first time.

As a regular player, you don't have a lot of worries. You don't have too many responsibilities. You're just like the kid at a party. No one expects you to perform a job, they just expect you to play -- and that's awesome. But as you get older, one of two things seems to happen:

The first, is that you realize you want to have responsibilities. You want to be more like the grownups, and you WANT to get picked to do things. You want to help! So you do your best to be as helpful and responsible as possible, in hopes that the grownups see that and eventually, let you sit at the "big kid's table" with them.

Or...

You start to act responsible anyways. You're always kind, always helpful, and you go out of your way to make sure things are perfect for everyone. You sacrifice your own time, your own needs, to make sure everyone else comes before you. The others notice this, and realizing how 'adult' you are, let you sit with them.

Either way, you've now been given this HUGE responsibility and a sort of "reputation" to uphold. You have to start acting like an adult, doing things a certain way, paying better attention, and even keeping the other in-line. But... you still (sometimes) feel like a kid parading around in an adult's costume... (especially if you're still a ~Helper) because when things get bad, instead of handling it yourself, you still have to run to the grownups and have them fix it for you, and it feels less like solving an issue, and more like tattling.

For me at least, this promotion has made me feel just a little bit more "grownup". It might just be a lot of superfluous stuff like flying and smiting and going invisible... but it's really an enormous responsibility that i'm glad i could have. Something as little as a light blue name instead of a yellow one just somehow gives you this sense of "wow, i look important now!"

As a helper, i felt like the only thing i was really good for, was giving tours -- which is a pretty thankless job sometimes. You deal with some of the rudest, most impatient players you'll ever meet -- IF they even respond at all. You'll get people who fly right past the rules and then DEMAND to know how to get to "where to build". You'll have to (repeatedly) explain to people why you can't give them creative mode, or why there are such strict PVP rules. There will never be a tour where you don't sit there at the end and think "oh god have i remembered everything? Are they going to be okay? I wonder if they'll stay? Are they going to grief everything the minute they go through that gate and then the 10 minutes we spent in that tour were for nothing!?"

There will be times when you are asked to inspect a grief, and then feel completely useless when 3 jrmods, 2 vanished admins, and a srmod all have TP'd there quicker than you, because you were still waiting on the victim to acept your teleport request (which cost you $100 out of your own pocket...). You'll fumble over commands, and wish, pray, and yearn for free tp's.

But after all that... you really really feel like you deserve it, when you're promoted to Jrmod.

Like i said, i know it's a really really silly thing to get emotional about... and maybe i don't have much else to look forward to, but I'll admit... i did get a little teary-eyed when i got promoted out of the blue like that <3

And i do hope one day, before all my friends have moved on to other games or gotten too busy for Famcraft... that i can one day have my name in red. But for now, i'm happy with that diamond-y light blue <3
