Charr and chosen surnames

One of my Beans is branching out and making an affiliated guild for her friends (yes, I’m so proud, etc etc) and amusingly while [BEAN] has tended toward sylvari, all of [BONE] so far is maining charr, and they’ve been discussing the naming conventions, so that had me thinking

It informs a lot of the worldbuilding of charr society that they’re named the way they are. They don’t maintain a familiar link like normal passed down surnames. For example, Almorra Soulkeeper has a son called Ajax Anvilburn, and you wouldn’t know they were related unless informed, which Almorra does not generally do due to her son being the equivalent of an alt-right shithead. Almorra also has a granddaughter called Ember Doomforge. Charr don’t raise their own cubs, they surrender them after weaning to communal education, where they’re raised as a group and taught combat above all else. 

So there’s no cultural relationship between a dam/sire and their cub, they may publically acknowledge each other or they may not. Parent/cub relationships are an unspoken source of complicated feelings, as experienced by the player character if they’re charr, and other main figures like Rytlock. 

A charr chooses their surname - half of it individually, the other half decided as a group within their warband. The cubs raised together choose the name that links them together, usually partly based on what they intend to be assigned to, such as the Pick warband, a mining crew, or the Sky warband of the Pact who pilot the helicopters. When a charr’s sense of identity is removed from their genetic family it is restored through their warband group, their new family. You grow up with them, share your name with them, and in so doing you know yourself through the warband. 

Another example, my guild’s Jozra Emberthroat

When I met the character she only used her surname, from which I can tell she would be either in the Ember warband or... the Throat warband. Which was funny. But I also can’t tell what name is applicable until I’m introduced to another member, who would reflect one of the two words, and then reveal which part of the surname she had chosen for herself. And as the individual part of the name often reflects the person’s profession or talents, and she is an elementalist, I would have put money on it being the Throat warband. 

We also, down the line, encountered a reference to a Ms Frostgullet, which was like, clearly a nemesis and rival. 

Point is, the other members of the warband reflect your identity to others, more than your name can on its own. Charr are shunned without a warband and it’s perfectly in line with how reliant they are on the group dynamics of their names.

i feel like there's a specific Bit canach has with emberthroat (one of many because he likes needling her) where he insists that if they ever came to blows again he would win because he isn't hampered by little things like 'hallucinogens' and 'being up for four days in some squalid cave' even as the idea becomes more and more absurd and this, specifically, annoys the shit out of her because she's from such a martial culture. the digs he makes about her appearance don't even register, she thinks they're funny, but this one bit drives her to teeth-gritting madness and he hasn't slipped up once in over ten years. she repeatedly explains that he's vegetal and she can set fires with her brain and he just chortles and shakes his head. when she comes hobbling out of icebrood saga, two dragons down, he nods sagely and says yes this will look very good framed on my wall when i do best you. she's tearing off her shirt and challenging him to a brawl in the fantasy tescos express and he's like no no commander i respect you too much
