Into The Further: Insidious: The Red Door Review

So, I was unsure whether to post this review this quickly, but after some decision making, I decided to write this review. This was also my first time seeing an Insidious movie in theaters but that won’t affect my review as I want to be unbiased and straight to the point, with that being said, let’s get straight to this spoiler free review of “Insidious: The Red Door”.

Insidious: The Red Door is a 2023 supernatural horror film directed by Patrick Wilson (who also stars in this movie, and this was his directorial debut), This movie was produced by James Wan and Jason Blum, the movies screenplay was written by Leigh Whannell and Scott Teems, the cast involves Patrick Wilson as Josh Lambert, Rose Byrne as Renai Lambert, Ty Simpkins as Dalton Lambert, Sinclair Daniel as Chris Winslow, Hiam Ambbass as Professor Armagan, Andrew Astor as Foster Lambert, Juliana Davies as Kali Lambert, Steve Coulter as Carl, Peter Dager as Nick the Dick, Justin Sturgis as Alec Anderson, Joseph Bishara as the Lipstick-Face Demon, Leigh Whannell as Specs, Angus Sampson as Tucker, and Lin Shaye as Elsie Rainier.

The Plot:

Josh Lambert heads east to drop his son, Dalton, off at school. However, Dalton’s college dream soon becomes a living nightmare when the repressed demons of his past suddenly return to haunt them both.

Positives:

One positive I have about this movie was the tone of the movie as it had a tone of finality for *THIS* chapter of the Insidious franchise. I enjoyed how dark this movie got for a PG-13 horror movie as it didn’t hold back on the scares…with that being said that also is a drawback which we will get to later. The demons were terrifying, I audibly said “Nope.” when one of them appeared.

The second positive I have about this movie were the performances especially Patrick Wilson and Ty Simpkins as father and son duo Josh Lambert and Dalton Lambert as they struggle to confront the demons of their past and present and it makes you root for them. Each cast member did a decent to great job in their roles. The demon performances were unsettling in a way that will make you feel a sense of disgust and discomfort. The third positive I have was the use of The Further and how terrifying it can get.

Negatives:

One negative I have was the overreliance on jumpscares, I felt like if you want to terrify your audience, throw in a couple jumpscares, not 5-7, I loved the background scares this movie had and the payoffs to said background scares. But the jumpscares seemed a bit excessive. Maybe, I’m being a bit harsh on the jumpscare element of the movie.

The second negative I have was the pacing as some parts of the movie seemed to drag in the beginning, however that is just a knit pick. But overtime the movie picks up which is fantastic.

My overall thoughts:

While I didn’t love this movie, I enjoyed it, however, don’t let these negatives and positives affect your viewing experience of Insidious: The Red Door as I recommend checking it out whenever you get the chance to do so. Check it out in theaters, streaming, and physical media (when it comes out). At least it made $32.6 million at the box office in its opening weekend which is fantastic for horror. Okay, I know it seemed like I was ripping into this movie, but I mean it when I say go check it out whenever you get the chance.

So, what exactly is Dreamkatcher?

Dreamkatcher is not to be confused with Dreamcatcher, Lawrence Kasdan’s 2003 film version of the Stephen King novel of the same name – which just happens to be one of the worst Stephen King adaptations ever (and that is saying a lot). It was also one of King’s weakest books.

Dreamkatcher with a “k” is a much better film than that one – not great, but it has some very decent scares and surreal moments of isolation and malevolence.

Actually, Dreamkatcher is more specifically based on the ancient Indian tradition of dreamcatchers – looms made of willow wood and yarn or thread, which are often garnished by feathers or beads – than the older film was. Though dreamcatchers did play a part in that plotline, Dreamcatcher was more specifically about an alien invasion and a government clampdown than a story about dreams, spirits and demons, as its title might suggest.

As Wikipedia explains about dreamcatchers: “Traditionally they are often hung over a cradle as protection. It originates in Ojibwe culture as the ‘spider web charm’ … a hoop with woven string or sinew meant to replicate a spider's web, used as a protective charm…”

This movie creates a new variation of the old charm, the dreamkatcher, a burnt and dirty evil twin of the original. They not only do not protect people from evil spirits, the dreamkatcher in fact gives the spirits free access to the real world and to people’s subconscious.

Besides, as lead actress Radha Mitchell good-naturedly told us in a recent interview about the film, “You really know it’s evil because the K is backwards. That means it’s evil!”

Either that, or someone struck out while looking. (Okay, okay, I know that’s a semi-obscure and not totally relevant baseball scorekeeping reference, but what do you want? I’m missing baseball in the post-Covid-19 world.)

But anyway, back to Dreamkatcher. Mitchell told us she was fascinated by the idea of a “dream invasion” in the script, and to a large extent that is what the film is about. It is paranoid and isolated – there are only four important characters in the film, six if you count evil spirits – but it is also often legitimately creepy, even if the climax somewhat gets away from the filmmakers.  

Mitchell plays Gail, a child psychologist who takes a trip to her new boyfriend’s strange but luxurious vacation house (what’s the deal with all of those randomly placed front windows?) in rural New York. It is the first time the guy had been to the house since his late wife’s mysterious death at the cabin a few years earlier.

Boyfriend Luke is played by Henry Thomas. (Elliott from ET all grown up!) Along for the trip is Luke’s young son Josh (Finlay Wojtak-Hissong from The Banana Splits Movie), who is honestly more than a bit of a brat and determined not to like this strange lady who wants to take his mom’s place. And that is even before his mom starts to pop up in his dreams.

Lin Shaye plays a nearby shopkeeper who specializes in native knick-knacks and particularly dreamcatchers. She also knows a lot more about the mother’s death and local evil than Luke is willing to let on.

Like I said, the film has a weird sense of isolation and desperation – they don’t even get cell phone reception. Mostly it is just Gail and Josh in the cabin trying to deal with each other. (Luke is called back to the city for work early on and is gone for a good chunk of the film, and the shopkeeper is an important supporting role, but comes and goes.) And while Gail tries to bond with Josh – even succeeding to a certain extent – evil spirits try to pull them apart.

As I said earlier, the story gets a bit out of hand towards the end, as the ratcheting up of the violence overwhelms the tightly coiled seclusion and creepiness of the storyline. However, there are enough decent scares to make it worth a watch.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and shelter-in-place world, Dreamkatcher is being released directly on VOD (though honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if it would have skipped the theaters anyway). So, if you are looking for some fresh horror content while you are self-isolating, give it a chance.

Georgia police taser an 87-year-old woman who was cutting dandelions with a knife

My grandmother used to make dandelion wine, which is probably why an 87-year-old woman named Martha Al-Bishara was in the lawn of a Boys and Girls Club in Georgia, cutting and collecting the dandelion plants. Police confronted Al-Bishara after an employee called police to complain that she was in the yard, "looking around for vegetation to cut down or something." Police arrived and told Al-Bishara to drop the knife, but she didn't speak English so she didn't drop the knife. One of the officers pulled out his own pocket knife and dropped it on the grass to show her what he wanted her to do. When she didn't comply to the pantomime, an officer shot her with a taser, even though she had remained calm the entire time and showed no signs of agitation. They charged her with criminal trespass and obstructing an officer. Watch video here.

"An 87-year-old woman with a knife still has the ability to hurt an officer," Chatsworth Police Chief Josh Etheridge told reporters.

The incident feels just like an episode of Mayberry RFD, except Sheriff Talyor would have not used a taser and would have helped Al-Bishar collect dandelions before driving her to his place for lunch with Opie and Aunt Bea.

Chatsworth Police Chief Josh Etheridge and Officer Steven Marshall picked dandelion leaves away from Martha Al-Bishara's cupped hands, bound behind her back. Al-Bishara, then 87, had picked the leaves with a steak knife from a field behind the local Boys & Girls Club across the street from her house. Her grandchildren said she wanted to garnish a salad. After a worker at Boys & Girls Club called 911, reporting this mysterious, knife-wielding woman, Etheridge and Marshall found her in the back lot, near the fence. According to body camera footage released Tuesday afternoon by Al-Bishara's attorney, the officers stood only a couple of feet in front of her. They shouted commands. But Al-Bishara, a Syrian immigrant, speaks little English, her grandson said. "Throw it down!" the officers yell. "Throw it down! Throw it down! Throw it down! Drop it! Throw it down! Drop the knife! Drop the knife or you're going to get Tased! Put the knife down! The knife! Drop it! Drop it! Drop it now!" The third officer was about 20 yards away, making it difficult to see what happens in the space between Al-Bishara, Etheridge and Marshall. In his report, Marshall said she took steps toward him. He then deployed his stun gun, striking her in the chest. Al-Bishara quickly fell, the video shows. Etheridge and Marshall lifted her up as she moaned. "Why did you not stop?" Marshall asked her. The officers pulled her hands behind her back and locked her in handcuffs. They continued to try to speak to her in English, but Al-Bishara responded in Arabic. At one point, after Al-Bishara pointed out her home, the third officer attempted Spanish. "Casa?" he asked her. About seven minutes later, Al-Bishara's daughter, Widad Douhne, arrived at the home, located in the 700 block of North 7th Avenue. She did not know about the confrontation and had come to visit her parents. An officer was trying to tell Al-Bishara to get in the back of a police car, so they could drive her to the Murray County Jail to book her on charges of criminal trespass and obstruction of an officer. "You need to ask her politely to sit in the van," an officer told Douhne. "She will," Douhne said. "But she's an old lady." "Oh I get it," the officer said. "I get it. But you can't have knives." "OK," Douhne said. "Just tell her to sit down and we'll talk to you," a second officer told Douhne. "Try and translate and tell her to sit in the car," the first officer said. "Because we don't want to pick her up and force her." Al-Bishara's attorney, Jeff Dean, said Tuesday night he is in the midst of a negotiation with Trident Public Risk, the insurance company that represents Chatsworth, over the August 2018 arrest. Attorneys for the company have only sent him one offer, which he deemed "unsatisfactory." "They're just paying really the cost of litigation, just to try to make it go away," Dean said. "They didn't really want to compensate her for what she went through." Dean said Conasauga Judicial Circuit District Attorney Bert Poston gave him a copy of the body cam footage "at least six months ago" during a meeting, when the prosecutor also supposedly said he would not prosecute Al-Bishara. Dean said he has not received formal notice that the charges are dismissed, and Poston did not return an email Tuesday evening. Timothy Douhne, her grandson, said Al-Bishara is not as vibrant as she was before the showdown. She is ashamed, and she has begun taking medication for depression. Her husband, Azar, 97, died June 1.
