'Big Sky' Season 2: Premiere Date, Cast, Trailer & What To Know
Tumblr media
Whatever cliffhanger Big Sky is sure to leave fans with at the end of Season 1, the good news is that it will be back to explain everything in a second season. In early May, Deadline reported that the series has been renewed for Season 2.
The announcement didn’t come as a surprise: Season 1 of Big Sky was a big hit for ABC, averaging 3.5 million viewers per episode and ranking as ABC’s sixth most-watched scripted program. In fact, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s ranked third overall for new series on TV, coming in just behind The Equalizer on CBS and Law & Order: Organized Crime on NBC.
There will be one change for Season 2, though. David E. Kelley (the writer behind hits including Big Little Lies and The Undoing) will be stepping down as showrunner. That role will instead fall to Elwood Reid, executive producer of The Chi and The Bridge, while Kelley will continue to executive produce the show.
Here’s what else we know about Big Sky Season 2 so far.
The Big Sky Season 2 Premiere Date
An official airdate for Season 2 has not yet been announced. Season 1 premiered in November, so if it remains a fall show, it could return to ABC with the rest of its fall TV lineup in late September.
The Big Sky Season 2 Cast
Presumably both Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury) and Jenny Hoyt (Katheryn Winnick) will return — unless they meet the same fate as Ryan Phillippe’s Cody and die in the Season 1 finale. If Ronald (Brian Geraghty) and his new girlfriend Scarlet (Anja Savcic) manage to dodge law enforcement, they could also return in Season 2. And if that’s the case, Jerrie (Jesse James Keitel) and Mark (Omar Metwally) will probably stick around to help hunt them down. But the Kleinsasser storyline seems to be wrapped up with characters like John Wayne (Kyle Schmid) and Rand (Ryan Dorsey) dying in Episode 15.
The Big Sky Season 2 Plot
Big Sky is based on the Hoyt/Dewell book series written by C.J. Box. The first half of Season 1 covered the events of The Highway, which was released in 2013. The second half of the season explored the Kleinsasser storyline from The Bitterroots, released in 2019. That leaves three novels that Season 2 could explore. Back of Beyond from 2011 focuses on Cody Hoyt’s story, which would be hard for the show to incorporate since he died in the first episode. Badlands (2015) follows Cassie as she travels to North Dakota, where a young kid happens upon a big crime. But 2017’s Paradise Valley will likely be the easiest to adapt, because it continues to follow Ronald’s story — the big focus in Season 1.
Big Sky Season 2 Trailer
A trailer has not been released, but this post will be updated as more details become available.

4 - First Day at Work
Tumblr media
Part 5
Always Had Something For Cowboys
Author - Let me know if there's anything specific you want to see in the next part
Rubbing the sleep from my eyes I yawned trying to wake myself up at 5am. Sitting up against the wooden headboard I sighed seeing that it was still dark out as it was expected to be. I was somewhat used to being up this early after living on the Kleinsasser ranch for a couple of years. But this is a different time now. Gently pushing the covers off my legs my feet hit the wooden floor and I heard Reese making a noise. "Mommy?"
"Sssh baby. Go back to sleep." I whispered to her, tugging the blankets back over her tiny body.
She made a noise rolling over watching me while I made my way over to the wooden dresser. "Did you kiss him?"
"Go back to sleep, Reese. I'll tell you everything after work." I told her digging around for some jeans and a long brown sweatshirt. Leaning forward I kissed her forehead, shutting the door gently behind me not to wake her up again. "Love you, Reese."
Walking through the Dutton Ranch living room I carried my brown boots in my right hand. On my other hand I had a thick Grey jacket hanging over my arm. Finally pairing it all with the hat that I had learned belonged to Kayce's mother last night. Exiting through the front door I made my way to the barn seeing the lights were on inside and everybody else was already saddling their horses. "Excuse me, is there another available horse I could use?"
"Yeah they might be one inside. Why do you ask, ma'am?" A guy wearing a black cowboy hat asked. He had some brown hair and a little bit of stubble on his chin.
Dropping my hands at my sides. "Mr. Dutton's son has offered me a job for the time being."
"I'll handle this, Ryan. Get your ass out there to work." I heard a deeper man's voice speak towards the guy who was speaking with me.
Ryan nodded, riding his horse off in the distance with the other cowboys. "Okay."
"I am the lead ranch hand to Mr. Dutton. I don't remember him saying we had any new ranch hands coming here. What's your name?" The stranger asked me dismounting his black horse that he was riding on.
Extending my hand to him I tried to shake his hand. "I'm Y/n, Y/n Lambert. Mr. Dutton's son knew I needed some money and his father said I could work here as long as I was a hard worker."
The man had dark black hair and eyes that were staring at me intensely. "Rip Wheeler. Can you ride?"
"I have been taught yes. Probably a little rusty but I should be able to remember how to ride." I responded.
Rip tipped his hat at me, heading off towards the open fence. "Good deal. Saddle yourself a horse and get to work."
Entering the white wooden barn I eyed the empty horse stalls until I came across a light tan horse standing on the end. Unlocking the wooden door I pushed it open, holding out my hand to touch the horse's nose. "Hey buddy. It's alright. I ain't gonna hurt you." I whispered, leading him out of the stall. Finding a saddle on the wall I tossed it on where it takes me a second getting some of the straps twisted around.
Climbing up onto the horse I sighed, taking the reins in my hands gently. Walking the horse out of the barn I saw that Rip was waiting there for me. "Come on, girl. We're burning work time."
"I'm coming." I called out to him kicking the horse in the side where he ran forward to the ranch hand. Together we rode out into the field and to the cattle that needed to be moved from one field to a different one.
Riding through the field I did my best to keep my hat on my head chasing after one of the cattle that had gotten loose from the group. Getting my horse as close as possible the cafe made a noise but moved over in the direction I pushed it. "Dang girl. Did you say you had no experience riding before?"
"I said I might be rusty. My ex's family owns a ranch. He taught me everything I know." I smiled, tipping my hat to the cowboy who lived in the bunkhouse that I had learned was named Colby.
He nodded, turning his horse in the direction with the others and the cattle. "Keep it up. You're definitely better than Jimmy was when he started here."
"Hey I didn't lose my new hat this time." Jimmy, who was wearing a light tan hat called over to us.
Colby taunted him back. "You threw your hat on the bed, Jimmy. You're lucky you didn't get piss in your boot for that."
"Hey, are we working or having conversations over there!" Rip gained our attention causing all three of us to look in his direction.
Fixing my hat on my head I rode over towards him and the other two followed me. "Sorry Rip. We're coming." The ride back to the barn wasn't too bad and the only downside was that the sun was almost setting when I got the horse back and settled for the night.
"Mommy, can you watch the sunset with me?" The front door opened onto the porch when I was coming up the stairs.
Looking down at my clothes I didn't feel too great after being sweaty all day. My hair was now in a messy bun so it wasn't in my face when I rode back. "Awe sorry, Reese. But I need to change out of my work clothes first."
"Oh okay." She lowered her gaze from mine.
Somebody else came out of the door revealing Kayce who put a hand on her shoulder. "I can watch the sunset with her for a little bit."
"Thanks Kayce. I'll be quick I promise." I swore to him heading into the house. Going upstairs, stripping off my muddy work clothes. Getting into the shower I moved as quickly as possible before grabbing some fresh clothes. My phone vibrates on the edge of the bed where I read the familiar nickname of JW. "What do you want, John Wayne?"
He sternly responded. "What else would I be calling about except you and my daughter."
"Our daughter! How many times must I remind you of this."
JW scoffs. "Whatever. You know what I am calling about Y/n. You took off and ran to keep my child from me."
"I had every right to do so. You aren't - haven't been a good father to her after the day she could walk. Your head is filled with the desire of gaining the ranch from the day your daddy spat it from his mouth."
He didn't sound fazed by the facts I was spouting off. "It is my birthright and it will be here when she's old enough."
"Yeah right, JW. You still have your head so far up your ass to stop thinking about that dang ranch for a second. You have a young daughter and someone you used to care about." Running my freehand through my hair I huffed.
He replied again. "I'm doing this for us, Y/n. This ranch is everything to me...everything to us."
"Jenny was right about you. Goodbye JW." I removed the phone away from my ear hitting the end call button and blocked his number for good measure. Going back downstairs I left my phone in my room seeing that the sunset was almost about to be gone. Stepping just up the closed front door I sucked in a breath at what I saw before me.
Out on the porch I watched my daughter laughing with Kayce over something he must have said. He certainly was better than my ex boyfriend that was for certain. "It took him a while but he's improved."
"I'm sorry, John. Oh hi....what are you talking about?" I noticed the man of the household was coming from the kitchen.
He raised a coffee cup to his mouth. "He had his one trouble when he told me he got a girl he barely knew pregnant. I didn't take it well. But now I can't imagine my life without my grandson."
"I can't imagine mine without Reese in it. And I honestly don't ever want to." I replied to the elder p.
He lowered his cup going to the living room. "If you're thinking of staying you're welcome too. I know that me and Tate wouldn't mind. Kayce either."
"Maybe you're right John. Maybe this could be my new home." Wrapping my arms around myself I heard him sit down allowing me the chance to step out onto the porch. Reese bolte to my arms and I laughed carrying her over to the swing Kayce was sitting on. Sitting down the three of us watched the sunset fade off together.

3 - Dating a Cowboy
Tumblr media
Part 4
Always Had Something For Cowboys
The truck pulled to a stop outside the local bar with me and John Wayne dressed up for our first official date. I paused in the passenger seat, sending him a concerned look on my face. "We're not old enough to be here, JW."
"Don't worry about it. I've got it covered. Just wait here and I'll be back in a second." John Wayne responded by getting out of the driver's seat leaving me alone.
My phone vibrated and I saw it was Jenny Hoyt's phone number calling me. She had been spending time with the oldest son Blake. "Hey Y/n, I was going to see if you wanted to hang out with me and Blake tonight."
"Oh man. Sorry I'm already out tonight with JW." I replied to her.
I could hear the concern laced in her tone. "You're on a date with John Wayne?"
"Yeah. Why, what's the deal?" I questioned her not following why she was worried for me.
She sighed through the phone. "It's nothing. Blake's just told me how his brother can be when it comes to girls. He'll sleep around and then ditch the next morning like it never happened. I just want you to get hurt."
"Jenny, I'll be fine. He hasn't even mentioned us sleeping together tonight yet." I told her seeing him coming out of the bar with a bag in his hands. "Jenny, I should go. I'll call you later. "
She attempted to warm me one last time before I hung up the phone call. "Y/n, just be careful. He only cares about getting the ranch when his daddy dies. Don't get tricked by his charm-"
"Who was that?" JW asked, shutting the door behind him and sitting the bag on the truck consul.
Sliding my phone back in my jacket pocket I changed the subject. "It was just Jenny telling me to have fun tonight. So what exactly did you snag us?"
"Bourbon and some chocolate cake from the bartender. We just can't let my daddy find out about this since he wouldn't like me trashing his name with the police." He warned me by removing his cowboy hat sitting it on the inside dash.
I shoved a bite of cake in my mouth watching him. JW popped open the bottle with a knife he had in his truck. He offered me the bottle first. "Thanks JW."
"Hey you wanna do something crazy?" He asked me with a smirk on his lips.
Downing a lot from the bottle I felt the buzz running throughout my body. He took a long drink and we passed it back and forth until we were both buzzing pretty good. Leaning across the counsel I kissed him deeply. "Let's go back to the cabin. I want you JW "
"I want you too, Y/n. Let's get out of here." He quickly turned the truck back on and we drove back to his families ranch. Never imagining that one time was enough to change everything about our lives.
Eyeing myself in the mirror that was in the spare bedroom that John had offered us. I had five different outfits scattered across the bed. Reese was outside playing with Tate who was messing around on his horse. I wasn't really sure what I had to be nervous about when dealing with tonight. But I sure as hell felt nerves in the pit of my stomach. "Come on, Y/n. This is nothing but him being nice to me. Nothing romantic involved here."
"Mommy! Mommy, Tate wants me to ride with him on his horse." Whipping my head around my daughter came running into the bedroom throwing her hair around until she stopped.
Turning around to face her I sent her a smile. "Well that sounds fun. But you need to talk with an adult on the ranch. So you don't get hurt."
"Mommy, do you have a crush on Kayce?" Reese asked, seeing the piles of clothes on the foot of the bed.
I chuckled at her. "No honey. I don't have any feelings for him."
"Then why is he taking you to dinner?" She asked curiously.
Tucking hair behind my ear. "Because he's trying to be friendly. His dad has offered me a job and a place for us to live until we can get our own place."
"Wear your boots with this." She moved around me seeing a tan flannel shirt laying with my light brown boots.
I already had the jeans on that went with those exact boots. Taking it from her hands I slipped it over my head and tucked some of it in the front of my pants. "So how does mommy look?" I asked her with a hand on my hip sliding the boots on.
"Not much like a cowgirl." Reese replied sitting on the bed.
Tilting my head she made a good point. "What am I missing, sweet girl?"
"You're missing this." She jumped off the bed and climbed up on the wooden chair reaching for the hat that was hanging there. She ran over to me showing me the hat. "Can I put it on ya?"
It was a dark colored brown with a leather strap attached to it. Lowering myself down on a knee to be eye level with her, one hand on my knee waiting for her to move. "Thank you. Now you gotta promise me you'll be good for John while mommy is out to dinner." I smiled at her, raising myself up to stand.
"Pinky promise?" Reese questioned me holding out her pinky.
Scooping her up in my arms I grunted lightly holding out my own pinky for her. "Cross my heart and hope to ride"
"A horsie off into the sunset." She finished my sentence looping her pinky with mine and we kissed our hand once they were intertwined together. Sitting her down she led me down the wooden stairs in all excitement. She let go of my hand seeing Kayce standing at the bottom of the stairs.
He slowly turned around and his mouth hung open at the sight. "Wow...I'll be."
"Doesn't she look pretty?" Reese giggled twirling around from side to side beside me.
Kayce removed his black cowboy hat, still eyeing me up and down. I caught myself doing the same with him. He was wearing a gray button up shirt, some dark blue jeans with dusty boots. "She looks...beautiful."
"Thank you, Kayce." I blushed standing in front of him. "So what did you have in mind for dinner?"
He responded simply. "Whatever you want. I know a good spot to go ridin' if you want. But it's totally your call."
"I ain't been on a horse in a long time." I admitted fixing my hat since I was nervous and I wish he wouldn't see me this way. "I always enjoyed counting the stars and that way you don't have to get all fancied up."
The front door could be heard opened and we saw his son Tate come into the living room. He quickly looked around for Reese, grabbing her hand when they met gazes. "Daddy, can Reese and I play around in the barn loft?"
"Yeah just be careful." He responded by offering his right hand out to me. Placing my hand in his, the kids ran in front of us exiting the main house. We entered the barn and I saw Kayce go over to a black horse once opening the wooden door leading him outside to me.
Slowly raising my hand I brushed my fingers over his nose, the horse pushed his nose against my hand making a quiet noise. "He looks like a good old horse." I told him that Kayce nudged me with his hand offering to help me up.
"Thank you." I nodded, throwing my left leg over the saddle. My right foot was in the stirrup while the horse's tail swung back and forth. Shifting my body around I watched Kayce climb on behind me putting his front close to my back handing me the reins.
Kayce tugged on the reins and placed his hands over my smaller ones so we could hold onto them together. "If you remember this you just hold onto these and don't yank them suddenly or you'll spook him. Just keep a cool head and we won't get bucked off."
"I understand, cowboy." I nodded in agreement feeling him gently kick the horse in the belly to go. The horse ran out of the barn slowly and ran faster into the distance and through the wooden fencing. The wind went through my hair and I felt a smile on my face where we kept riding until we were standing in the middle of the field.
He dismounted the horse first, nice and slow, offering me his hands to help me down. Putting my hands in his he had me jump down with my hat almost falling off my head. "What's that look for, Kayce?" I questioned him seeing him have a confused look written all over his face.
"That hat I've seen before...on my mother." He said back to me.
Lifting my hand up I almost removed it from my head feeling like I had taken something I shouldn't have from his family. "Oh geez sorry. Here I didn't mean to take it."
"Don't feel like you're stealing from my family. Where'd you find it anyway?" The young Dutton asked me, reaching into his saddle bag he laid a blanket down.
Sitting the hat back correctly on my head I plopped myself down by his side. "Reese found it in the spare room your dad gave to us. If I had known it belonged to your mom I would've had her put it back. What happened to your mother if you don't mind me asking?"
"She got paralyzed by her own horse during a ride with me and my sister." He answered my question sucking in a breath.
Removing the hat from my head I sat it down in my lap shifting my gaze up to the starry sky. I could count at least ten with my bare eye at the moment. "Well then I really shouldn't be wearing this. Here you take it."
"No, don't do it, Y/n." Kayce held his hand up, taking the hat from my lap. He gently put it back on my head like it was. "Nobody's worn it in years and it suits you. You work this ranch, you'll need a good hat."
Sending the young cowboy a smile. "You really must just be a nice guy or you really like me for some reason. Cause you've been nothing but nice to me."
"My momma didn't raise me to be a bad guy. I'm just glad to know I make you happy. Tate and Reese seem to have a barrel of fun together in only 48 hours." Kayce chuckled, laying on his back staring up at the stars.
Laying on my back I sat the hat on my stomach enjoying this evening out or date whatever it is you would call it. "Kids always get along much better than adults do. That's one thing I miss being a kid again."
"Yeah because then we could howl like wolves at the moon till the sun came up." Kayce chuckled and I followed his comment up with me sitting upright and howling under the moon. He smiled just watching me not knowing all the worries in my head. For it was simply me and him watching stars on a ranch.

Part 2
Always Had Something For Cowboys
Quickly running across the wooden floor of the main ranch cabin I knew if I got caught it wouldn't be easy to leave. So I had to make sure I could get out of here without anyone knowing...at least until they all woke up in the morning. Entering into my five year old daughter's bedroom I sat down on the side of her bed gently shaking her shoulder. "Reese Reese, wake up. Wake up sweetheart."
"Huh mommy. What's it?" She rolls over blinking the sleep from her eyes but she wasn't fully awake.
Brushing hair from her eyes I tilted my head towards the doorway. "I need you to get dressed and come with me now. I have the car packed and ready to go."
"Go...where. Is daddy coming with us?" She asked me to sit upright in the bed.
Shaking my head I didn't want to explain all the details to her at such a young age. I already never wanted her to get pregnant so young like I had even though I couldn't imagine my life without her. "Not this trip, Reese. But I have your horse Peanut waiting in the car for you."
"Okay." She mumbles sliding out of the bed grabbing her boots and jacket heading towards the doorway stumbling and making the floor creek.
Sliding forward on my feet I scooped her up in my arms so she wouldn't make too much noise heading straight to the car as fast as I possibly could. "Just go to sleep honey. I'll wake you up in a few hours."
"What do you think you're doing,Y/n?" Buckling her in her seat with her toy horse she fell right to sleep before I heard a voice from the guy I wanted to avoid entirely.
Whipping my head around I parted my lips seeing the dark brown eyes and black hair of John Wayne Kleinsasser. "None of your business, JW."
"It actually is my business since you have our daughter sleeping in the car." He responded by putting his hands inside the dark orange jacket he was wearing along with a black cowboy hat.
His family owned a large ranch out in the big sky area of Montana. We had met at a rodeo competition years ago, instantly hitting it off. "She's actually my daughter since you've been spending all your time working the ranch instead of being a daddy."
"Watch your mouth. Y/n." He warned me.
Crossing my arms over my chest I spat at him. "I suggest you watch yourself JW. Otherwise I'll go wake Cheyenne and she can kick your ass."
"Don't bring my sister into this and jump tell me what the hell are you doing packing up your stuff at six in the morning?" JW shook his head at me walking to the edge of the porch steps.
Leaning my back against my car I avoided the answer he was looking for. "I don't have to tell you anything. Especially since you lied to me."
"What have I lied to you about, darling?" John Wayne asked me to walk off the porch until we were facing each other. "I seem to remember that my family has been nothing but nice and honest with you."
"You lied about what you did to the girl in that cabin. You lied about killing her and then just pretending that you found her so suddenly." I responded with a sharp tongue.
He quickly moved forward shoving me against the car where I grunted hoping he wouldn't wake my daughter. "Who told you about that. Tell me!"
"Your sister who else...now let me go." I winced at his hand that was around my throat and his other was pressing against my chest.
JW shoved himself away from me in a huff. "So what you find out what happened and you're just going to take her away from me. She's my daughter!"
"Yeah but you haven't been a good father. You've been so consumed with getting your hands on this ranch." Rolling my eyes at him.
He pointed his index finger at me. "Blake is in prison so the ranch belongs to me when my father passes."
"Ohh I'm so happy for you. Wait, no I'm not because you're only caring about yourself." Stomping my boots in the dirt I threw my hands up in the air. "You're turning out to be just like your daddy who I have realized is an ass!"
John Wayne lost it at that sentence grabbing me by my shoulders and slamming me down in the ground. I tried to get him off but he put one arm over my throat and his other held my wrists above my head. "Shut up, Y/n. You don't know what you're talking about."
"You're just upset cause I might be right - ah!" I croaked when he pushed his arm on my throat down a little more.
His eyes locked onto mine seeing some tears welling in my eyes. "She's my daughter and you can't keep her from me."
"Urgh!...watch me." I bared my teeth moving one of my knees in between his legs and just kicked him right in his nuts.
JW groaned in pain collapsing on the ground. "You bitch!"
Scrambling to my feet I took the keys out of my pocket and opened my driver door. Getting into the seat I locked all the doors seeing him forcing himself to his feet. "He won't hurt us baby girl." I whispered to my sleeping daughter starting the engine.
JW got up against my window making me jump but I held my foot above the gas pedal. "She's my daughter. You can't keep her from me forever. I will find you!" Slamming my foot on the pedal and spun the steering wheel driving around him and leaving a cloud of dust. Racing down the driveway I gripped the steering wheel never looking back knowing it was good that I was getting away from him. He would have only hurt me and Reese.
2 months later
Shutting the passenger door behind me I take Reese's hand in mine and we walked up towards the small grocery store we had parked at. We had driven as far from the Kleinsasser's ranch as I could get until I felt safe that JW wouldn't follow me. Opening the door the store owner saw us greeting us nicely. "How are you two girls doing this morning?"
"Pretty good thank you." I replied moving down the isle with chips grabbing a bag of regular lays potato chips.
Reese tugged my shirt. "I want Chetas."
"Okay we can get Cheetos. What do you want to drink?" I asked her to put the other bag back and get the one she wanted.
She ran up to the glass cases with the drinks inside. "Chocolate milk!"
"Got it. And we can have some chicken breast for dinner." I picked up the carton and a pack of meat going to the check out. Laying everything out the owner scanned everything. "How much do I owe ya?"
He said back. "$13. 23."
"Oh geez. I uh...I only have six dollars and ten cents." I apologize remembering that I had to use most of the cash I had grabbed for gas. And I wouldn't have anyone money until I got a job wherever we ended up staying.
The owner shakes his head no. "I'm sorry ma'am. It would be fine if you had like twelve dollars instead. You'll have to get rid of the chicken."
"Sir you don't understand we haven't eaten dinner and that would just leave us with chips and milk. She's five years old and I can't feed her like that all the time." I explained to him that I was beginning to panic.
He gave me a disappointing look but still wanted close to the amount due. "I'm sorry miss. But this is how I feed my family."
"Come on, baby. Well get food somewhere else hopefully." I gently pushed her towards the door about to leave, seeing a young boy that looked a little older than my daughter.
He entered the store rushing past us and grabbing some candy cheering. "Dad they have sour candy!"
"Tate, slow down now." Glancing at the new voice I saw the man that was his father brush past me where I dropped some of my money on the floor. "Oh man I'm sorry ma'am."
We both lowered ourselves on our knees picking up the change quickly. "You're okay. It was my fault..." Shifting my gaze up slightly I noticed that the guy before me was wearing a tan jacket and black dusty cowboy hat. He had curly light brown hair and soft brown eyes with a slight stubble reminding me somewhat of JW.
"Here you go. I am sorry again Ms..." He trailed off raising himself to his feet and I followed shortly.
Taking the money from his hand I introduced myself. "Y/n and you are?"
"Kayce, Kayce Dutton." He extended his hand and we shook, moving his gaze over my shoulder since he was slightly taller than me. "Tate, hey leave the girl alone."
Tate, as he called him, was showing my daughter his favorite candy's. "I was just showing her candy."
"He's fine, Kayce. Now if you'll excuse us we'll be going. Reese let's go!" I called over my shoulder, having my daughter run up and taking my hand. I hers once more almost getting through the doorway.
Kayce's voice made me half in my tracks. "Are these your groceries?" He pointed at the food that we had left on the checkout counter.
"Oh yeah. I...I don't have enough money for all of it." I drop my gaze to the ground in embarrassment.
Kayce reached into his pocket, taking out his wallet and handing the owner the amount that was still on the computer screen. "Can I get a bag for her stuff and the sour candy too."
"Sure." The cashier took his cash and went to bag up both our stuff.
Parting my mouth I raised my freehand trying to pay him with what money I had. "You really didn't have to do that for us....uh here it's not much but it's what I have at the moment."
"You keep it. It's not a problem, Y/n." He held up a hand picking up the bags coming over to me and handing me my groceries.
Tate suddenly spoke up to my daughter. "Do you like ice cream?"
"Yeah." She smiled brightly.
He shrugged his shoulders. "There's some down the street. Dad, can we get them ice cream?"
"That's not my call, son. And I bet Y/n and her daughter have somewhere to be." Kayce told his son who dropped his smile.
Reese ran forward giving me puppy dog eyes. "Please mommy. Pretty please."
"Reese, I can't..." I started to say but I could never say no to her puppy eyes. She tilted her head not backing down and so I ended up caving. "Okay we can go. But then I have to start looking for a job since we'll be out of money."
Reese hugged me tightly, giggling. "Thank you!"
The four of us got in our separate cars and drove down to the ice cream shop down the road that Tate talked about. Shutting my car door Reese and Tate ran straight in front of us with me and Kayce walking slowly behind them. Kayce and Tate both got strawberry ice cream. Reese got chocolate and I picked cookies and cream. We all sat down on separate benches outside the shop. Biting into my cone I hummed at the good taste until Kayce caught my attention. "Hey I heard you say that you don't have much money. Is there anything else I can help you with?"
"Kayce you've done enough for us. I'll surely be able to find a job on my own." I said holding my cone in both hands looking in his direction.
The youngest Dutton boy wouldn't take no for an answer after seeing you with your five year old kid reminding him of how he was with Tate when he was a baby. "I'm just wanting to help and you can still say no. I just thought I should offer you a trip to my family's ranch. My father is always open to getting some more work hands and he pays rather well."
"Holy crap that's extremely generous." I ran a hand through my hair hearing Tate and Reese laughing behind us making me reconsider my answer. "You know what I guess it can't hurt to take you up on your offer."
Kayce smiled back at me taking a bite of his cone. "Hey Reese, you wanna see some horses?"
"I love horses!" She spun around in her chair making me chuckle eating more of my ice cream seeing that we might be going in the right direction here in this part of Montana.

Part 9

Sitting up in my bed I was still half asleep stretching my arms and legs out hearing footsteps come down the hallway of our place. My sister and I decided to split the cost of the house so I didn’t have to find my own place. The footsteps halted in the doorway where I looked up. “Hey sis, Cassie called me and said she got a call from Cormac about something suspicious. So I’ll see you later.”
“Alright. Tell me what she says when you get back.” I responded hugging my knees to my cheek underneath the blankets.
She turned on her heels flipping her hair over her shoulders when she paused. “Let me just make something clear. You’re not seeing Beau right like we planned?”
Knitting my brows together I tried to play it cool like we weren’t secretly dating without her knowing. We had only had two dates and I’m not sure you could call that we had a long kiss. We only had quick little ones here or there. “What no way. We made a deal and I promised I would stick to it.”
Jenny leaned her back against the doorway crossing her arms over her chest. “Look you better not be lying to me. I don’t want you to get hurt like with JW. I dated a cop and it didn’t work out. Dating someone that you work with especially.”
“Travis and you shouldn’t have happened and I’m sorry to say that but it is true. You shouldn’t have gotten together when he was undercover.” I scoffed, crossing my arms over my chest, getting a little annoyed that she was judging me.
My sister pointed her index finger at me, raising her voice towards me. “This isn’t about Travis, this is about you, Mallory. The night you found out about the girl that he killed you came home sobbing to me. I don’t want you to feel like that again. You’re my sister and I am trying to protect you.”
Tossing the covers away I got up from the bed shrugging on some black leggings with my shirt that had a cowgirl hat on the front of it. Putting my hair in a ponytail I heard my phone go off figuring it was Beau. “I understand that but you should go. Cassie is waiting for you.” She gave me a straight face exiting the bedroom leaving me alone.
“Hey darlin’ I was thinking about bringing over some pizza and beers since we have the day off. Sound cool to you?” He asked through the phone.
Closing the fridge I pulled out some beers knowing that my sister wouldn’t be back for a few hours so I could replace the ones we drank. “Yep I’ve got the beers covered. So come on over.” It wasn’t long before I heard him knock three times on the front door only an hour later.
Getting up from the couch I flung open the door smiling towards my boss. He walked in sitting the food on the table in front of the tv before embracing me in a hug. “I’ve missed you, Mal.” Nuzzling my head into his chest flinging my arms around his neck. His arms secured around my waist resting his chin on top of my head softly. Clutching my hands into fists behind his back I sniffed slowly starting to cry into his embrace where he clearly noticed. “Mallory, what’s wrong. Why are you crying? Talk to me sweetheart.”
He broke the hug gently holding his hands on my forearms. Those green eyes focused on me as I let tears slip down my face. “Beau, it’s nothing…I’m fine. Let’s eat pizza.”
I removed myself from his hold but he managed to snag my wrist quickly. “Hold on, Mallory. Seriously, you know you can talk to me. So please tell me what is bothering you.”
“Jenny and I had a fight sort of this morning…” I trailed off where he led me down to sit on the couch intertwining my hands with his in my lap. He didn’t say a word, just letting me go at my own pace. “She’s piecing together that we are getting close. I hate lying to her but she has put this idea in her head that you will be like my ex John Wayne. And I brought up her ex Travis because he’s why she won’t date cops anymore…she thinks that will happen to me…to us.”
Beau reached up, wiping away some of the tears from my cheeks. “The drug dealer cartel.” I nodded my head yes slowly before he kept talking. “Look, you shouldn’t be having fights with her about our relationship. Now you told me about your past with JW and I even have my own past. So don’t ever think that you can’t talk to me about what you think I might do wrong. I messed up with Carla and Emily but I will do better with you,”
Squeezing his hands in mine I wiped away opening the pizza box handing him a piece taking a bite out of mine. “Can I ask what happened between you two? Like why didn’t it work if you don’t mind.”
“It’s fine, don't worry.” He took a bite handing me the pepperoni from his piece since he just wanted cheese pizza tonight. “Let’s just say that we had fights over little things. Me coming home and drinking after a hard day of work. That turned into almost everyday before I left for work. And I just became different around everyone…long story short I’m trying to move past them now.”
Sitting my piece of pizza down I lay my head on his shoulder where he draped his arm over tugging me closer into his embrace. A comfortable silence filled the house while we just sat there together. Slowly turning my head I saw he was staring down at me longingly too. “You’re a good guy, Beau. I wish I would have met you first.”
“You’re perfect, Mallory. Your ex was a dumbass.” He responded in an almost mumble underneath his breath blinking once as he leans forward and I followed shortly, connecting our lips in a long kiss. He snacks his arms around my waist where I climbed in his lap, never breaking the kiss.
Running my fingers up his chest I gripped the fabric of his white flannel shirt for a few minutes before my fingers knotted themselves in his hair tugging a few strands hearing him moan into the kiss. The Texas sheriff ran his hands up my back resting one hand there moving his other up to cradle my face gently. I broke the kiss for a split second hearing us both panting but we were so caught up in the moment that neither of us seemed to care.
Beau deepened the kiss cupping the other side of my face with his hand. Wrapping my arms around his neck he leaned back onto the couch when I tilted his chin up not expecting that our day would go like this. He moved his hands underneath my shirt, breaking the kiss searching for me to tell him stop. “Do you want me to stop?”
"No. I…um. I've never done anything more than this. Not even with my ex.." I blushed, feeling embarrassed that here I was still a virgin while my sister was married and already had a kid in college.
Beau gently turned my chin back toward him so I was focused on his green eyes resting his forehead against mine. "We don't have to do anything else if you're not ready for it honey." Bending my head down I snuggle into his warmth letting him wrap his arms around me kissing my forehead until his phone rang. "Arlen, what's up. Wait, what do you mean you let her go into the woods alone?"
I could tell by the frustration in his tone that it must be the new husband he was talking too. He hung up the phone causing me to sit upright on the couch. "What was that about?"
"Carla's new husband, Avery. He let my daughter go into the woods by herself and now he called saying she was all in a panic. Also they found a dead girl's body that was brought back. I'm sorry Mallory but I've gotta go." He stood up, removing himself from my hold heading for the door.
Snatching my boots that I had accidentally thrown under the couch coming home late from the office I grabbed my cameo jacket calling his name. "Beau, wait." He paused watching me grab my house key following him to his truck. "I'm coming with you."

2 - The Dutton Ranch
Tumblr media
Part 3
Always Had Something For Cowboys
Reese and I followed Kayce's truck through the town and into the clear sky mountains area. The drive was a long way from the busy town lifestyle. We turned down some old windy roads until we started driving past a wire fence along the side of the road. The last turn made us drive down a dirt road where I could see a wooden fence post entrance. "When do we get to see the horses, mommy?"
"Whenever Kayce stops driving honey." I responded by turning the steering wheel around driving underneath a sign that read Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Parking the car beside his truck I got out of my door the same time as Kayce. "I've heard of this place a little bit but I can't believe we're actually here now."
Tate got out of the truck when Kayce responded. "Yeah most people are always surprised the first time. I'll open the barn and check on some of the horses."
"Horses!" I unbuckled my daughter's seatbelt where Reese jumped out of the car and moved around me over to Tate.
Tate smiled. "I have my own horse named Lucky. Do you want to see him?"
"Yeah." She replied, running off with him towards the barn.
Shutting the passenger door of the car I sighed walking towards the fence in the training area. Leaning my elbows on the wooden posts I slowly glanced around, seeing the mountains off in the distance that we're just as beautiful as the ones at the Kleinsasser ranch. I bite my lip trying not to think too much about JW and the possibility of him coming to get custody of Reese. "I thought I'd show y'all my horse that I ride since my dad and the others are already out riding there for the work day."
"That sounds fine with me." I said turning around and seeing Kayce up on a black Stallion horse in front of me.
Tate and Reese came running from the white barn with a large Y above the doorway seeing him on a horse. Tate opened the gate letting his dad ride the horse inside and he dismounted it slowly. "Okay so Tate show'em how to do this without spooking him."
"Okay." Tate walked forward slowly raising his hand right up to the front of his nose.
Reese takes my hand and we move forward together where I raised her hand up next to Tate's. "There you go, Reese." I whispered hearing the horse make a noise and lean more into our hands.
"How were you so good at that?" Kayce asked, standing a few steps away from the kids and the horse.
I walked over to the cowboy shrugging my shoulders in response. "Um...my ex JW owns a ranch in Lochsa Montana. He taught me how to not spook them. But it's been years since I've actually rode one."
"I could teach you if you wanted someday." He offered looking me in the eye.
Tucking hair behind my ear I snorted in a laugh. "If this is how you charm a girl, Dutton you're doing a pretty good job. Offer me a job here and horse riding lessons."
"Well I wasn't trying to ask you out. But that's good to know I'm already impressing you." He chuckled and I did along with him shifting my gaze to the distance seeing some cowboys riding our direction.
Most of the cowboys headed straight for the barn yet one who looked older than the others came over to the four of us. The rider dismounted their horse showing that they wore a tan jacket with orange on the shoulders and a black cowboy hat. "Who are the visitors you've brought to our ranch, son?"
"They're names are Y/n and Reese, dad." Kayce said to the older man.
Offering my hand I take a step forward shaking the elder man's hand. "Y/n Lambert. It's nice to meet you, Mr. Dutton and your ranch is so beautiful."
"Please call me John,Y/n and thank you." Kayce's father grinned, eyeing my daughter who was still petting the horse with his grandson. "What's your daughter's name over there?"
"Reese, come here!" I hollered over to her where she ran over and I lowered myself to a knee to be face level with her. "John, this is Reese."
She smiled brightly. "Hi John. I love your horses."
"That's good to know. Maybe we can get you riding a horse sometime if your mother allows it." He suggests resting a hand on the belt of his jeans.
Kayce watched the conversation remembering what he had offered her outside the ice cream store. "Hey dad,Y/n is in need of some money. I was hoping you could maybe help her out for a little while."
"Sure as long as you're hard working. This ranch is my family's legacy and I will protect it." John explained tipping his hat up to look me in the eye.
Putting one hand on my hip I answered him seriously. "I will do my best, Mr. Dutton. I used to do some work for my ex's ranch before we left that family. And if I don't know what to do I'm sure your son will be willing to help me out."
"Who was the family of your ex if you don't mind me asking?" He tilted his head curiously.
I replied. "The Kleinsasser Ranch. Horst and Margaret own it and have four kids. They're second son is my daughter's father and will most likely get the ranch when his daddy passes."
"I'll keep that in mind,Y/n. Oh and there's a spare room in the main house that you can use if you don't have a place to stay at the moment." He offered to walk his horse by the reins towards the barn to put him up for the evening, leaving us alone.
Shoving my hands inside the pocket of my jacket I looked at Kayce who was having Tate put up the horse. He came over to me and Reese bent down on a knee. "I'm pretty sure I saw some cookies in the kitchen. How about you go get one for your mom and I?"
"I'll be right back." She giggled heading to the cabin and through the front door.
Kayce chuckled in my direction. "She seems like a great kid."
"Yeah she is...and I wouldn't trade what happened for anything." Chuckling the wind knocked some hair in my face that I pushed behind my ear remembering when I first found out I was pregnant at 17.
Five years ago
Stumbling into the closet bathroom I could find in the main part of the house I bent over the toilet. My hair fell over my shoulders as I puked until I didn't have anything in my stomach. "Urgh!...why can't I keep anything down?"
"I would have thought you were smart enough to know what happened when you took my brother for a ride." Shooting my head upright I gasped seeing young Cheyenne in the doorway.
Wiping my mouth I lowered myself to the wooden floor, since it was the middle of the night and everyone else was asleep. "Cheyenne ... .what are you doing up?"
"I needed a drink from the kitchen and then I heard you in here throwing up. Check under the cabinets they're should be some tests." She pointed to the cabinet that I had my feet pressed against.
Reluctantly I opened the cabinet finding what she was referring to and I felt sick in my gut eyeing them. "No...I can't be pregnant."
"Actually you can. It's our only job besides being quiet according to my daddy." She pointed out snarky.
Shaking my head I was still in disbelief but opened one of the tests either way just to calm my nerves. "JW and I can't be teen parents. I refuse to accept it...shit!" I cursed under my breath reading the test once we had waited long enough.
"If you didn't want a baby maybe you shouldn't have my brother lead with that thing between his legs." Cheyenne spat at me.
Snapping back at the rancher daughter. "Not helping, Cheyenne!"
"Just saying Y/n." She shrugged her shoulders.
Sitting down on the toilet I put the test in my lap reading the plus sign over and over again. "This can't be happening. I can't have a baby this young." I hugged my knees to my chest sobbing uncontrollably feeling overwhelmed.
"Hey now don't cry over this. Tears won't make anything better." Cheyenne bent down in front of me wiping away some tears.
I croaked through more tears. "But what am I supposed to do now? Your brother won't grow up and become a father."
"He may not man up but I can convince him. And if he doesn't then me and my mother will be there to help you raise the baby if you decide to keep it." She placed a hand over mine while my other gripped my knees.
Sniffing through tears I gave her a half smile. "Thanks, Cheyenne." She got up from the floor and tugged me up to stand with her. She then left the room and I dropped my gaze downward to the object in my hands. Gripping the pregnancy test in my fingers I sniffed before putting one hand on my stomach.
I had finally gotten Reese down for bed for the evening after dinner and some chocolate milk. Walking down the wooden stairs I saw that there was some light downstairs. When I got to the ground floor it was actually coming from the fireplace that had a small fire burning in it even though it wasn't that cold outside to really need a fire just yet at least for Montana weather. "Hey Kayce, what are you still doing up for?"
"Oh hey Y/n. Ah Tate isn't easy to put down for the night and I ain't that tired so I thought I'd stay up until I was sleepy." He turned around on his seat on the coach noticing that I was still awake just like he was.
Moving around the side I decided to take a seat down next to him laying my hands in my lap just watching the fire crackling in front of us. "Sounds like a good plan to me...."
"Hey I was thinking that I have the day off tomorrow and my dad could watch our kids for a few hours. Would you maybe want to go get dinner with me or something tomorrow night?" Kayce broke the silence that had filled the room staring into my eyes.
Shifting my gaze over to meet his deep brown eyes I couldn't believe what he just asked. "Are you being serious, Dutton?"
"Have I ever lied to you since we met this morning?" He chuckled, giving me a serious look.
Biting my lip it only took me a minute to think before answering. "No ... .so sure I'll go out to dinner with you." Kayce smiled back at me and I reflected the same expression, never expecting that one conversation may change everything in my life yet again.

Part 10
Other Hoyt’s Off Limits
@dragonixfrye @stoneyggirl2
During the drive I just stared out the window since it was late at night when we got the call from the camp. Watching the trees we pass on the road I glanced out the corner of my eye at Beau. “Good for nothing ex…”
He was gripping the steering wheel clearly frustrated which was a side I haven’t seen before from him. “Beau.” I called out softly towards him.
“I can’t believe he just let her go off by herself in the woods!” He apparently didn’t hear me because he grumbled some more scoffing under his breath.
Reaching over the counsel I gently shook his shoulder breaking him from his trance of frustration. “Beau! She’s gonna be fine.”
He gulped, finally sending me a glance. “Yeah….you’re probably right.”
“I am positive I am. Okay you said that he said she was back at the camp and just rattled.” I attempted to reassure him believing that I was right more than I might be wrong.
The drive fell silent for a little while. Mostly because I had no clue what to say to him. I didn’t have a child like my sister Jenny. So I wasn't sure what to say next thankfully he did break the silence around us. "You're right Mallory. She'll be fine. So what are you going to say if you're sister asks about us?"
"I'll um…think of something. We're here." He pulled the truck to a stop once we drove under the camp sign both getting out seeing the rest of the team already here.
Footsteps of Sunny Barnes came towards us while I clipped my gun to the belt on my jeans. 'Emily was the one that found Mary's body off a trail.
"Did anybody search the area where the body was found?" Beau questions her.
She shook her head. "Well, after Buck brought Mary's body back, he and Avery went back up to take a look around."
"Daddy?!" Someone called out where I saw a girl with dark slightly curly hair running towards us and throwing her arms around him meaning it could only be his daughter Emily.
He wrapped his arms around her resting his chin on top of her head. I could see relief come over him by just holding her close. "Hey. Come here.I got you. I got you. You okay? Hmm? What happened?"
"I followed Luke into the woods and I got lost. And then I saw her. She was bleeding. I don't know. She had Paige's bag. I just thought that she was hurt, but then I saw her eyes." She sobbed through his jacket.
He whispered into her hair eyeing me as I gave him a weak smile. "Okay. Baby. I got you."
"Dad who is she?." Emily pulled her head up from his chest focusing her watery eyes on me. "Is she the woman you were telling me you were dating?"
"What was that?" My sister's voice could be heard a few steps away from us.
I felt my cheeks turn red as I quickly stepped up introducing myself to the girl since we hadn't met until now. "Hi Emily, I'm Mallory. You're dad has told me some about you."
"Cool. So are you two?" She pointed her index finger between Beau and I.
He cleared his throat putting a hand on her back leading the three of us away from my sister's ears to start the questioning. "We'll explain later, Em. Right now we have some questions to ask you. Where was Buck when you found Mary?"
"I actually don't know." She replied sitting down outside one of the tents. "He must have heard me scream. Before I knew it, he was just there."
"Do you think Luke could have killed her?" I asked the teenager.
"No." She immediately spoke.
Her father asked another question. "Is that a feeling you have, or is there something else?"
She shrugged her shoulders. "It's just a feeling, I guess."
"Okay. That's enough questions. I know you're just doing your job. Come on, Em. Let's get you some water." His ex wife Carla led her daughter away. A man with dark brown hair that had some gray falling down to be shoulder length approached us.
“Avery.” Beau called towards him when he tried to leave with Emily.
“Mm-hmm.” The man made a noise stopping.
Beau went into full dad mode at this point frustrated with the man in front of me. “You need to tell me what the hell's going on here and why you let my daughter wander off into those woods alone.”
“We had no idea. Alright? She didn't tell Carla, either.” Avery responded before my sister’s footsteps came over to us.
She sighed heavily annoyed. “Tonya and Donno are here.”
“What?” Beau and I both asked together.
She turned her head back in their direction for me to see Tonya wave at me. “Yeah. They obviously had something to do with this.”
“Jen, come on we can’t blame them for everything…even though we know they don’t mind killing people for gain.” Crossing my arms over my chest I knew she had a point from our past.
Beau holds up a hand to us two girls hearing her not say another word. “Did they confess? If they didn't confess, we got to treat them like everybody else...Possible suspects.”
By the time the sun had risen over the camp we had been told that there was a $15 million that Avery found someone here was looking for. Meaning Luke and Paige weren’t here for vacation. Leaning my elbows on the table my sister was tying away on a computer watching Beau walk up. “So there’s an opportunity for someone to get $15 million. I mean that much money would make anyone go crazy. Luke and Paige were obviously trying to steal it.”
“Could explain why Tonya and Donno are here.” Beau adds on. “Maybe they're working a job.”
She smirked, liking that he leaning towards the pair now. “I'm glad you said it. I was beginning to think Donno was bribing you with his sandwich craft.”
“Okay, you know what? Let's not go there. 'Cause bad guys can have good points. Donno's just happens to be sandwich skills.” Beau waved his hands around loving those sandwiches.
Poporneck walked up to us smiling at the mention. “Oh! Donno's making sandwiches?”
“I wish. But no.” Beau slumped his shoulders in defeat.
Pointing my index finger between the boys I grinned feeling hungry now. “They are good sandwiches. Oh, if he wasn’t a suspect I would totally ask him to make us some for lunch.”
“Okay, okay. Can we focus on the case please.” My sister needed us to focus. “What do you got?”
Her former partner cleared his throat replying. “Uh, yeah, so there's a missing bow and quiver from the equipment shed. Arrows match the murder weapon.
“Alright so now we just need to question these two. Let’s go.” I clasped my hands together
“Mallory. You’re with me and Tonya.” The sheriff called my attention.
My sister lifted her head up confused at why he would ask that. “Why do you need her help exactly?”
“I am hoping Tonya will lighten up if there’s another woman with her.” Beau was quick on his feet while I bit my lip seeing Poperneck walking with Jack on a leash over to me.
“I was thinking we could use Jack to sniff out anything suspicious. If that’s okay with you, Mallory.” He suggested since I was the one who owned him now, not the sheriff department.
Bending down on a knee I run my hands through his fur seeing him wagging his tail. “Sure it’s fine. Now you be good for Pops.” The pair walked off before Beau and I went and found Tonya having the three of us get set up in a tent for questioning.
Beau holds the tent flap open for me hearing Tonya chuckling at seeing me again after all this time. “Well, well, look at the three of us back together in the same room. It’s a shame Donna is being questioned by someone else or we’d have the whole gang.”
“Never mind that now. We have some questions to ask you. Starting with why didn’t you go on the night hike with the others?” I said bluntly standing while Beau took the seat across from her.
“Well, I wanted to go on the hike, but Donno didn't. He's got a lot of rules.” She started off her story.
Beau tapped the pen on the table. “It's kind of odd, isn't it? You being up here with your cook? I mean, the man's interesting.”
“He's not who you think he is.” She responded back
“No, I don't imagine he is. The man contains multitudes.” He nodded.
She gave smile towards the sheriff. “Strong agree. But hiking isn't one of them.”
“What about the marriage?” I butted in knowing that during a questioning with Sunny she claimed that they were married according to how they registered. “I understand you're up here pretending to be married. Seems kind of odd for two people who enjoy murder so they can gain something like money.”
“You get freebies if you say it's your anniversary. You know, bottle of champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries.” She smiled tilting her head down.
Beau raised a brow moving his hand over the table not believing her story like me. “So it's just a total coincidence that you and Donno were on this trip at this time.”
“I mean, if we committed a crime, it's that we lied about being in love.” She shrugged her shoulders.
Beau laughed, clicking the pen open and closed on the table. “Good one.”
“I'm serious.” She sent us a smile letting her eyes drift up to mine. “So are we not going to talk about the chemistry between the two of you. Like are you two just a fling or will you get in trouble because you work together hmm.”
Raising a hand I try to keep my cool, thankful that my sister was intertwining Donno on the other side of the camp so she couldn’t hear her. “That’s none of your concern. We are here to find out about Paige and Luke.”
“Ohh so the little Hoyt sister hasn’t ever thought of getting with the sheriff in town.” She teased me by intertwining her hands together. “My former boss seemed to like him. So I’m not buying that you haven’t thought about it.”
Beau cleared his throat glancing over his shoulder at me before he spoke. “I'm not buying it. I think you're here looking for a lot more than free champagne.”
Holding the end of my shirt I could feel my nerves building up inside me. If Tonya could see right through me then could my sister do the same. “Speaking of marriages, I met your ex, Carla. She's a boss. Really impressive. I don't know why you left her.” Tonya leaned back in her chair.
“It's actually the other way around.” Beau gave her a half chuckle. “But we're not gonna get into that. As for my relationship with Mallory, it's strictly professional.”
Tonya and I locked eyes so I stood tall towards her. “No romantic relationship at all.”
“If you say so…the person you really should be looking at is Avery.” She points out.
Leaning my palms on the table, my hair falling over my shoulders hoping we are getting somewhere. “Oh, yeah? Why's that?”
“Well, his archery skills, for one. Avery's quite the marksman.” Glancing towards Beau I wasn’t sure if her words made sense.
“Avery? Really?” Even he couldn’t see it.
She nodded, seeming very certain about what she was a saying. “Deadly. He surprised everybody.
“Well, just 'cause he can shoot an arrow don't mean he killed ll Luke.” Beau responded back, lifting his green eyes up to me.
Tilting my head to the side I crossed my arms over my chest shaking my head towards her. “That might be true if we believed what you were saying. Plus we both know that Donno is capable of killing and you have a darker side too for one.”
“Well, I'm guessing that he's the one that told you about the $ million.” Tonya leaned her elbows on the wooden table.
“How'd you know that?” Beau questioned her.
She raised her hands in the air, basically putting the pieces together of what she thought. “Avery was talking to Luke, like, a lot. I'm just putting it out there. You can ask your daughter if you don't believe me. But something was going on with those two.”
“Alright I think I have enough information for now.” Beau rose from the chair turning and we started to leave the tent until she called out to us.
“So I was right, wasn't I? About you two.” Halting in my tracks, Beau glanced down at me. “I mean the looks you two give each other are so obvious. So there’s something definitely going on between you two.”
Beau turned to face her, dropping his hand that had fallen to my back now at his side instead. “Like we said before, we're just professional.”
“That’s not what her eyes say about you, sheriff.” Tonya teased resting her chin on top of her intertwined hands. “She’s got a thing for cowboys.” Turning on my heels I rushed out of the tent and he followed after me before I closed the passenger door in his face needing a minute alone.
Question my readers : should I include more flashbacks of Mallory and John Wayne. If so send me any ideas and let me know in the comments or dm me please ❤️

John Wayne was off helping his father with something, leaving me to sit out on the front porch of the caretaker's cabin by myself until he came back. Hugging my knees to my chest I was wearing one of his spare jackets since it was cold tonight. “What’s a pretty thing like you doing on our property?”
Lifting my head up from my knees I saw a figure in the dark until my eyes adjusted seeing it was his brother Rand. “You’re brother invited me over but got called to help by your daddy.” JW said he preferred to be out here by himself late like this.
“Well if that’s a lie then you’re a trust passer on our land.” He smirked, swinging his ax around in his hands. “Here I was thinking’ Blake already had a girl. I guess I can’t blame him for wanting two at a time.”
Rolling my eyes I didn’t want to talk about my sister with him. I could care less who she dated and what she did with them. Blake was good from what I had seen but he wasn’t going to make his father happy unless he took over the ranch. “It’s not Blake, I’m here with JW actually.”
“So you’ve got a thing for cowboys huh. Well I bet I can rock your little world better than he can.” He smirked quickly running up the stairs, securing his arms around my waist. I stumbled backwards, getting trapped in between him and the wall.
Struggling against his grip he had me caged in while he started to remove my jacket. “Rand, let me go!” I grunted not having as much muscles as him so he was able to remove my jacket but before he could tear my shirt he smirked, shoving his lips onto mine.
“Don’t act like you don’t enjoy this. I’ll call you darlin’ if you like that.” He teased in my ear whispering low with me squirming underneath him until a gunshot rang behind us.
Rand slightly pulled away from me allowing me the chance to see his brother standing in the headlights of the rover holding his shotgun. “Get off her, Rand or I’ll shoot you where you stand.”
“Awe come on, bro. I was showing your girl a good time.” He slumped his shoulders watching JW slowly walk up the stairs aiming the shotgun at him until he separated from me.
John Wayne glared at his brother until he headed off back to where he came from. He slowly sat the shotgun down staring at me. “You alright, Mal. He didn’t hurt you too bad did he?”
Wrapping my arms around myself I noticed my shirt was slightly torn but other than that he didn’t really do much. “He didn’t hurt me, JW. Thank you for protecting me though. I didn’t think you’d be back.”
“I got done early and then I heard your screaming coming this way.” He responded by pulling me into a hug. Wrapping my arms around his neck I laid my head on his chest sighing in relief. “Don’t you worry, Mallory. A cowboy will always protect you.”
Starting to enter the sheriff station my phone rang off in my pocket. Answering it I didn’t bother looking at the caller ID just pressing it to my ear. “This is detective Mallory, who is this?”
“Oh and here I was thinking you wouldn’t have forgotten your girlfriend, Mal.” I recognized the voice of the last living Kleinsasser child, Cheyenne.
Leaning against the stone wall I held my phone up to my ear with my shoulder. My hair was completely loose down my shoulders not expecting her to be calling me or heck even have my number still. We haven’t talked since she killed JW. “Hey a hey, what exactly are you calling about this time? Also how did you get my number? I thought you and I agreed to not talk to each other anymore.”
“I kept your number in my phone and there’s something we need to talk about at the ranch. Are you free to come by today?” She asked me through the phone.
Throwing my head back I sighed heavily not wanting to get into whatever drama she was wanting today. Ever since my sister and I had met her family it always came with trouble shortly afterwards. “I don’t know. I have a busy day at work and then a date later tonight.” It would just be easier to hang up the phone then go back to that ranch.
“I promise it will be quick. It’s just something that I found and I wanted to know if it was true.” She pleaded with me where I finally caved entering the old address which felt strange. The drive was a lot longer than I remember it to be before I climbed out of my truck seeing her leaning against the front door.
“So what is it you need to tell me, Kliensasser?” I asked shoving my hands in the pockets of my jeans standing at the edge of the steps.
Cheyenne opened the front door and I followed shortly afterwards. The two of us walked through the living room until she opened the door to the office handing me a paper. “I found this in my daddy’s office. It says that it is a wedding contract meaning if JW got the ranch. Then you and your children would get the ranch.”
“Cheyenne, I don’t understand. We never married and we certainly didn’t have any kids. I am still a virgin.” I spat not believing what she was trying to tell me. Throwing my hands up seeing her sternly looking at me.
“I know you didn’t sleep with him, Mallory. But I just need you to tell me if you want anything to do with the ranch. According to this contract my brother was going to give you this place when he died.” She huffed, flipping her hair over her shoulders. “But I guess you don’t care now what with you hanging around that new sheriff in your town. Did my brother mean nothing to you!”
Turning around on my heels I didn’t need to hear anymore of this. “Of course he meant something up until the moment he killed his own brother and then Rosie. You know it’s because of this family that I am terrified someone may not like me ever again. So goodbye Cheyenne. You can have the ranch to yourself just like you wanted!”
Slamming my truck door closed I just hit the steering wheel a couple of times out of frustration. Why would she think I would come after her family’s ranch. Is that all I ever was or will be to someone. Someone they have to worry about taking what they want out of life. Maybe Beau is just using me to get to my sister. Driving out to his place it was dark by the time I got out of the truck seeing him sitting in a lawn chair with another one pulled up next to him. “Hey Mallory. I didn’t see you at work today. Is everything alright?”
“My past came back to accuse me of something I never wanted in the first place.” I scoffed feeling some nervous tear’s starting to slip down my face at the thought of my next question. “Beau, are you just using me to get close to my sister….because honestly everyone in my past has used me or lied to me and I just need to know.”
He sat his beer bottle down on the ground quickly rising to his feet drawing me in for a hug. “Mallory, no way would I ever do that to you. I care about you a lot. So don’t think for a second I would ever cheat on you or do anything to hurt you.” Wrapping my arms around his neck I sobbed into his shirt feeling him wrap his arms around my waist.
“Thank you, Beau. I….I’m just afraid to open my heart so easily again like I did. I don’t want to get hurt again like with John Wayne.” I mutter breaking the hug still letting his hands rest on my waist staring down at me with those green eyes of his.
The Texas sheriff smiled, raising his right hand to my cheek, tucking hair behind my ear. “Trust me, Mallory. I won’t break your heart. In fact I think I’m falling in love with you.”
“Beau I, “ I was truly at a loss for words at what he just said. We hadn’t been dating that long. A couple months at best I would say. Yet here he was standing in front of me saying he might be in love with me.
“You don’t have to say it if you’re not ready. I totally get that given what you have been through. I just wanted you to know-“ I cut off his ramblings leaning up on my toes suddenly and slowly crashing my lips onto his. He gasped stumbling a little before I felt his other hand come to cradle my face in his hands, deepening the kiss.
We were so focused on the kiss with me gripping his shoulders and one of his hands gangling itself in my hair that we didn’t hear a car pull up. A car door slammed shut and someone gasping is what drove us apart seeing my sister standing there stunned holding a case of beer in her freehand. “Mallory, Beau. Someone want to tell me what the hell is going on because it looks like you’ve been lying this whole time!”
Beau and I just froze in our places as I muttered under my breath wishing we had a way out of this. “Oh where’s Cassie with a phone call when you need her?” Because I knew my sister would be furious to hear our little secret.

Hey readers, to be honest I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to happen in this chapter except for another flashback of John Wayne and Mallory. Then I also wanted the ending with Jenny. So please send in ideas of what should happen in the next part because that would be super helpful
