The Saint: The Queen's Ransom (5.1, ITC, 1966)
"You realise that a few years ago I could have had your head chopped off for that?"
"A few years back, I wouldn't have said it."
#the saint#the queen's ransom#1966#leslie charteris#leigh vance#roy ward baker#roger moore#dawn addams#george pastell#nora nicholson#stanley meadows#catherine feller#gary hope#patrick westwood#peter madden#neville becker#john woodvine#larry taylor#john forbes robertson#john serret#andre charisse#what's that? you thought I'd given up on the saint? that I'd thrown in the towel‚ that I'm a coward and a liar? hah! well mud in your eye#bc here i am baby‚ back on my bullshit. i took a 'brief' break at the end of s4 before starting the color eps which ended up being 7 months#but actually the real gap between seasons 4 and 5 was more than a year. so what's new in Saintland? not much; immediately upon grabbing#this second boxset of colour eps and checking with my online transmission record i can see that network have liberally shuffled these eps#this first ep is on disc 2 while disc 1 features episodes from season 6 (!). as well as the shift to colour we also get a rearranged theme#(slightly more up tempo)‚ new titles and for the first time an entirely original script that doesn't even pretend to be adapted from a#Charteris story (true adaptations would be pretty rare from this point on). but it's a fun if familiar tale; Simon meets a deposed king and#his spoiled wife‚ and sets about teaching her some humility in true chauvinist fashion (as well as some stuff with jewels)#it isn't by any means a groundbreaking ep but if anything a degree of continuity between seasons 4 and 5 is somewhat welcome

The Saint: To Kill a Saint (5.19, ITC, 1967)
"You're trembling, Le Duc."
"Never!"
"You're as upset as a mother kangaroo who's just had her pouch raided."
"I am not even mildly surprised. There must be over a hundred people in Paris who would like to kill the famous Simon Templar."
#the saint#to kill a saint#1967#leslie charteris#michael winder#robert asher#roger moore#annette andre#peter dyneley#derek bond#francis matthews#robert cawdron#john serret#pamela ann davy#michael bilton#robert gillespie#victor winding#lawrence davidson#valerie leon#maggie wright#nita lorraine#Simon's in Paris and apparently has a hire car; I mention this only bc the Saintmobile has been conspicuous by its absence in most of these#colour eps but also bc this car magically changes colour from white to yellow depending on whether the shots are location or studio work#tbf not so much of an issue considering these eps were being transmitted in black and white in the uk.. this is a pretty solid ep#a twisty mystery about who's trying to frame who and why has someone got it in for Simon (i mean apart from the many obvious reasons)#speaking of which he does threaten to spank poor Annette André but relents once she bursts into tears... yeesh. Cawdron makes his fifth and#final appearance as Le Duc (spelled differently here than in previous eps where it was Leduc or even Luduc) joined for the second time by#Serret as Quercy (although tellingly Cawdron is ahead of him in the credits). yet again Simon is framed using the stick figure motif#also of note is a very risqué gag about Simon found in bed with two women and another in the shower... so risqué in fact the script then#has to go to pains to spell out that no don't worry he didn't have a foursome‚ it was all a trick to fool the cops... sure Simon...

The Saint: The Abductors (4.2, ITC, 1965)
"Inspector Quercy don't be a complete idiot, you know I'm not a murderer."
"I do not suggest that you kill these people."
"Thank you."
"But I do suggest that you are directly responsible for their deaths."
#the saint#the abductors#1965#itc#leslie charteris#brian degas#jeremy summers#roger moore#dudley foster#robert urquhart#annette andre#jennifer jayne#robert cawdron#john serret#nicholas courtney#ronald ibbs#sandor elès#david garfield#martin wyldeck#anthony chinn#unremarkable of plot but strong of cast; this is a fun little episode of international spies and cunning killers. we're in Paris‚ which#means Cawdron makes his 4th appearance as Sgt Luduc‚ as ever accompanied by Insp Quercy (John Serret having replaced Manning Wilson; Serret#had previously played a French Canadian detective in 2.3). Bob Urquhart does his best washed up waster with a heart of gold‚ and the#baddies include baby Nick Courtney as a wicked frenchman and Dudley Foster as... well. immediately i found myself wondering what on earth#he was doing with his voice when‚ horror of horrors‚ another character makes passing reference to his being Welsh. oh Dudley. sigh.#Courtney's villain is a big step up from his previous uncredited role in 3.14 and he gets to go real nasty (slapping around both women in#the episode). Chinn rather unfairly goes uncredited despite having both dialogue and an impressive fight scene. and of course lovely#Annette Andre plays a charmingly eager holidaymaker who gets caught up in Simon's adventure of the week and loves every second of it#oh!! and beautiful Sandor Elés! he'd not long made Evil of Frankenstein but hasn't much to do here (but does it with style and grace and..)#dreamy sigh

The Saint: Judith (2.3, ITC, 1963)
"Monsieur Templar, I have for you a high regard."
"Thank you."
"But yesterday you sit behind Monsieur Northwade at a hockey game and today you have an accident right in front of his house; it is a coincidence, no?"
"It's a coincidence, yes - and that's all."
#the saint#judith#1963#itc#leslie charteris#Leonard Grahame#robert lynn#roger moore#julie christie#david bauer#margo johns#john mclaren#john serret#ross parker#warren stanhope#robert macleod#william greene#andre boulay#ronald wilson#georges robin#i had it in the back of my head from my last time watching the bw Saint episodes that the ones named after a woman (and there's quite a few#of these) are usually pretty bad episodes. I'm not sure why i remembered that way and if it's even true‚ but this is by no means a dud#episode; it's not a classic either‚ but a rather middling entry which concentrates more on familial melodrama than any real mystery plot#(save a last minute twist). a rare tv role for Julie Christie (she'd quit tv for the movies shortly after her starring role in 1961's A for#Andromeda‚ and when this aired she'd just made her first big splash in Billy Liar; hollywood's gain was the small screen's loss)#john serret's French Canadian policeman is (at least initially) much more Simon friendly than the usual cop; his subordinate Ross Parker#gets some nice moments as the hapless tail that Templar ends up treating to fancy dinners and cognac. the fight budget seems to have gone#up yet again‚ leading to a highly unlikely scene of Moore diving through a plate glass window and sprinting away without a scratch#oh‚ and whilst Simon has done a lot of smooching of his love interests of the week‚ this is the first episode to heavily imply that they#actually sleep together (must be the Canada air)

Armchair Theatre: The Bird, The Bear And The Actress (ABC, 1959)
"I shall cry."
"That's all we can do. And sometimes, it's enough."
#Armchair Theatre#The bird the bear and the actress#classic tv#Single play#1959#Harry h. Corbett#Barry Jones#kate reid#Lee Montague#Annabel maule#Jon sullivan#Paul whitsun Jones#David spenser#John serret#Rose howlett#ted kotcheff#John glennon#Still on my single play kick#And happily network recently had one of their legendary sales so I picked up the third and fourth of their latest armchair Theatre#Volumes. This opener to volume 3 is a rare surviving example of 50s AT.#Later on the series would get something of a reputation for being cheap and slightly tatty but this early play is ambitious in every#Respect: from its mountaintop setting to its cast of American characters and intense dialogue heavy showdowns#Canadian Reid and Englishmen Montague and Corbett all do pretty well at passing themselves off as Americans#Writer Glennon was an American and director Kotcheff Canadian so this was a real international production. It's an arty script#Playing (as several AT productions would) on the artiface of the performing arts and the soullessness that can be inherent in the biz#Corbett is at his slimiest serpentine best as the cold and calculating theatre producer; Montague frets and worries his way through as an#Indecisive and ultimately spineless director and Reid is powerful as his starlet wife who might be the only one with any integrity left#Aside that is from Jones who is vulnerable dignity personified. This might well have been his UK tv debut as he was based in the US#Kotcheff of course went on to a notable career as a filmmaker; his films include personal favourite Wake In Fright. Some of his style is#Evident here in this early work.
