Not gonna forget the title line this time
LK 103: United we stanned
(pt1)(pt2)(pt3)(pt4)
Tumblr media
This comment about Philly throwing down less hard than Boston rings real funny in the 21st century. I wanna see Philly and Boston fistfight for rowdiest East Coast city while Pittsburgh cracks one open and watches and Baldmer tells them to pipe the fuck down.
Tumblr media
can I just point out how much this sailor looks like a twink in this frame. I'm calling him the twink sailor now.
Tumblr media
There are moments when its patently clear where the budget went in this show.
Tumblr media
Just another character who Didn't Deserve It.
Tumblr media
chicky nuggy jumpscare
Tumblr media
Local bear offers cock and meat to new-in-town twink, offer declined.
Tumblr media
flashbacks to art school
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lady Phillips: "Sarah dear, what do you know about men's passions and what are you trying to say about me."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
background artist appreciation moment, I know you weren't paid enough because they needed to pay Billy Crystal as John Adams.
Tumblr media
I would also like to point out that they've reused this one texture file of what appears to be quilted maple numerous times so far, and that its a hella good res file for digital art in 2000-whenever this was being made, so its either a .tiff (unlikely, huge file size,) .bmp (large file size but lossless,) .tga (unlikely, deprecated format mostly used in 3D,) or possibly an early form of .png (.png was around since 1994 but not formalized as a standard until 2004.) I don't know why I thought this might be interesting to point out.
Tumblr media
this texture hella crunchy though lol. Also I think this show is inked and then cell-shaded/matte painted digitally. Hybrid!
Tumblr media
Henri I love you but you are going to break things.
Tumblr media
In a sense, Tory's a nasty name on your side, too, for different reasons.
Tumblr media
ayyy its the Adamses, Riotin' Sam and Obnoxious John!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I see they're familiar with my family's dynamic.
Tumblr media
Sam's face. Don't touch me bro.
Tumblr media
Is James trying to get Henri off the lever or is he adding to the chaos? I think he's adding to the chaos.
Tumblr media
Yeah... James, those guys were definitely being assholes and trying to start a fight.
Tumblr media
John Adams: ...the fuck are you?
Tumblr media
Ohhhh you sweet summer child.
Tumblr media
sir you are putting alot of faith in a 15/16? year old.
Tumblr media
"We are distributing treasonous sedition, and there will be danger!"
Sarah: OH WORD?
Tumblr media
Well now you're just making shit up, Sarah.
Tumblr media
that being said she's kind of right about that.

Its silly but I do fucking love this interaction.

The Shadows of Ghosts — or Grace visits Wals' house... Sort of...
I hope you’re ready for my insane geek post about how I have abstract-stalked my fave, fictional version of Walsingham by visiting his home from Elizabeth: The Golden Age  (well, I’ve actually visited Hatfield House which stood in for his home.) I think it was meant to be his Seething Lane home - and before you ask, yes I have actually been to Seething Lane in London too, but it is not worth the effort except to point at the building called “Walsingham House” and go “oh, he is remembered!” (The real Walsingham in that case. Not Rush’s Walsingham. I digress.)
So, there are three main locations in Hatfield House, which are all open to the public (squee!), that stand in for various parts of Walsie’s home in The Golden Age (TGA). They are:
the Marble Hall
the Long Gallery
the Adam and Eve staircase
There’s still one short shot of William in the film at Francis’ home which I am struggling to place (where Francis is told he has a visitor and William pops out of a shady “corridor” waiting). I think it’s possibly part of the gallery or off the staircase but, nvm...
Let’s start with the Marble Hall, the first room you enter when you visit the house. I spent ages in here, it is grand af and very recognisable as the room in which poor, tired-out old Wals lies in his deathbed. Shekhar Kapur cleverly uses the “Rainbow Portrait” of Elizabeth, which hangs in the same position in everyday life as you see in the film, and sets up the scene so the portrait is presiding over Walsingham’s bed. (Ofc a man like Rush’s Wals would have the Queen watching over his bed... I’m sure his wife is well happy with that.)
The room also cleverly doubles as an entrance hallway, Kapur doing his camera trickery to get an angle on it from above.  Have another look when you watch Wals get home and hand his chain to his servant - it’s the same room.
Captures from the film featuring the Marble Hall:
Tumblr media
And my photos:
Tumblr media
You’ll walk next through and up the Grand Staircase and through the King James drawing room before you get to the Long Gallery. It is long too! The Long Gallery is another location which doubles up as two different areas of Wals’ house in TGA: the dining room and Francis’ study/library. It’s very recognisable by the wooden panelling, the floor tile patterns and the fireplace.
First, here’s the dining scene (on a side note, this scene is crazily edited. You can tell it used to be much longer and the editors tore it to shreds):
Tumblr media
And here’s the long gallery in my photos for comparison. Check the ceiling, the flooring, the panelling and fireplace for reference points:
Tumblr media
And here’s the other scene which uses the gallery - Wals’s study/library, where William makes not even a half-assed attempt to murder his brother. Harder to see the gallery beneath the set-dressing and props but if you check the floor and study the patterns on the panelling, you can see it:
Tumblr media
And finally, the Adam and Eve staircase. You descend this after you have been through the “Winter” dining room and the library (neither of which, I am fairly sure, are in the film). Why is it called the Adam and Eve staircase, you ask? Apparently because a portrait of Adam and Eve used to be hanging in it, but though the portrait has moved to another room, the name remains.
Due to the one-way system in the house, you go down these stairs whilst the ghosts of William and Francis pass you going up.
Here are caps from the scene. Mark the bannisters, ceiling and wall panels:
Tumblr media
And my photos. (Obvs they hung older portraits on the wall for the film, the ones currently hanging in there are very modern):
Tumblr media
This concludes my talk on visiting the shadows of ghosts and basking in the warm glow that you are walking in the same footsteps as actors playing your faves. And it also hits a double whammy as actual history has also taken place here too, though not Tudor history as this house is Jacobean and built after Elizabeth’s death. But if you want Tudor history, look out the window and you’ll see what’s left of John Morton’s fifteenth century palace, the one which Elizabeth would have spent time in and recognised. Cool af!
And tbh, “actual history” is a bit of a misnomer because even though, for example, Geoffrey Rush was playing Walsingham in his London home when they filmed here 14/15 years ago, the making of that film and the presence of those actors is now also a part of history, though ofc not the same branch as the one the film is portraying. (It gets a bit meta after a while, doesn’t it...?)
Stay tuned for the nest instalment of Abstract Stalking when I travel north in October to be be reunited with that babe of an Elizabeth location, Durham Cathedral, and walk in the steps of my baby Wals again, and where I’ll then be doing a whistle-stop tour of Northumbrian Castles and hopefully pinpointing the beach where Thomas Elyot was killed by Daniel Craig’s priest, the castle Mary of Guise rode out from, and such like, before I finally return via Raby Castle and point out the locale of the river masque where Anjou shouts out “un trés grand clés!”.
(Welcome to my one-man fandom. I apologise in advance.)

In The Crowd I Feel At Home.
A few weeks ago I went to go see Metallica for the first time, and I was totally blown away by the show. I’ll caveat this by saying that I’m actually not a huge fan of their music.  I certainly don’t dislike their music, and I respect them a lot, but I’ve just never really listened to them that much, besides owning their first two albums Kill ‘Em All and Ride The Lightnint.  When they announced a tour for this fall, a few people told me that I needed to go see them.  They were right, and I’m so glad that I did.  Their show reminded me of what I like most about music – the show and the crowd. They give a lot to both of these things. And the crowd gives back in return. They have some hardcore fans who are really, really passionate about music.  You can tell that their fans NEED to be there.  It made me think of all of the great musicians/bands that I’ve seen over the years.  I’ve been to a ton of shows, and the one thing that my favorites all have in common is that the musicians give to the crowd.  They need to be onstage, and the crowd needs to be there too.  They both feed off each other.  Not every musician does this, but if you go to enough shows, it’s really easy to spot the musicians who need to be there versus the musicians who are just simply performing.
On my drive home after the Metallica show, I decided to put together a playlist of some of my favorite musicians who do the same thing that Metallica does for their hardcore fans. I developed this list completely in my head during my drive home, and literally raced into my house after I parked so I could put this onto paper and not forget it.  I wanted to include 20 of the musicians that I’ve seen since 2016 (with two exceptions) who meet the criteria of giving to the crowd, needing to be onstage, having hardcore fans who NEED to be at the show, and just in general give it their all night after night.  The two exceptions are: Drive-By Truckers, who I have seen before but did not see in 2016 as they played near me on November 9, 2016, and needless to say not even music could get me out that day; Alkaline Trio, who I have also seen before and would have seen this year but they played all of their shows the same week as TGA and obviously I was not going to miss that.  Both of these bands meet this criteria exceptionally well, and I know this from personal experience.
Otherwise, I have seen all of these bands/musicians since 2016.  Why did I choose 2016?  No real reason, but I wanted to choose a relatively recent year to show you that there is a TON of great live music out there.  Maybe the musicians on this list aren’t for you, and that’s okay.  But assuming that you like music (and why would you be reading this if you didn’t?), I bet you can still find something out there for you.  Right now you are reading this on a device that can access Google.  You do know how to use Google, don’t you?  So just go to Google, and type in your favorite musician followed by the word “tour”.  Voila!
I’m sure there are some familiar songs on this playlist, but hopefully there are a few that are new to you. That’s one of the points of this playlist, to help you discover something new.  I know that you are familiar with Bruce, but do you know the Magic album?  It’s an essential fall album.  You need to know it.  Make sure you listen to this playlist straight through from beginning to end, and definitely pay attention to some of the transitions.  “Faded” is probably my favorite Afghan Whigs song and is definitely a great way to close it out.  “Push The Sky Away” into “Radio” works so well as a segue.  And who would have thought that Pearl Jam into Dave Matthews Band would work, but I was able to pull it off!
As you can see just by looking at the great musicians on this list, there is a ton of great live music out there that is still being made today but carries on the tradition of some of the all-time greats.  Bruce is an all-time great, but he was also influenced by James Brown.  Unfortunately I never got to see him play live, but there’s just no way he wasn’t incredible.  Wilco is well on their way to being all-time greats, and in my opinion they are already there.  They obviously were heavily influenced by the Beatles.  Just check out the ‘oh-oh’s in “Outtasite (Outta Mind)” – that’s totally influenced by the Beatles!  They’re just passing on the ol’ torch, ensuring that rock isn’t dead.  It might not have the cultural impact it used to, but that’s okay.  I’ve learned to accept that.  Plus if trying to get rock to have cultural relevance requires a band to just completely copy Led Zeppelin, then in the words of John (no last name needed)…..don’t you know that you can count me out!
