Saturday Morning Coffee
Good morning from Charlottesville, Virginia! ☕️
Tumblr media
I’m still having a great time at work integrating React Native into an existing iOS App. I still have a lot to learn about JavaScript and TypeScript but my interest is piqued. Don’t get me wrong, I still need to learn SwiftUI and I still love doing native work, but this is worth learning because we’re seeing more clients ask for it.
Just poured my first cup. I hope you enjoy the links.
Alan Herrera • Comic Sands
The United States Forest Service responded to a video filmed by a couple that went viral for allegedly showing Bigfoot walking in broad daylight.
I really do wish Bigfoot was a real thing. The skeptic in me says “Of course this is faked.” But how do we really know?
The truth is out there.🛸
Tumblr media
Steven Lee Myers, Stuart A. Thompson and Tiffany Hsu • The New York Times
Now rebranded as X, the site has experienced a surge in racist, antisemitic and other hateful speech. Under Mr. Musk’s watch, millions of people have been exposed to misinformation about climate change. Foreign governments and operatives — from Russia to China to Hamas — have spread divisive propaganda with little or no interference.
Face it, Space Karen isn’t the genius everyone made him out to be. He’s a self serving narcissist with too much money and strange ideas.
I’ve been saying I won’t call X, X, because it’s still Twitter. I’m wrong. Twitter is gone. Now folks are left with X.
Please, please, please, sell the Twitter name and branding. Someone could make something amazing with it. 🐦
Swift Forums
When using this feature, the developer hand-writes Objective-C headers just as they normally would for an Objective-C class, but implements their declarations in Swift by using an extension marked with the new @implementation attribute.
This is an interesting idea but I’m not sure it’s any better than what we have today when using @objc notation.
I suppose it would mean the continued existence of the vaunted header file. 😄
Dave Winer
I have basically had it with JavaScript. It is a write-only language. More so than any other language I’ve used, including some pretty old and arcane systems. I asked ChatGPT to give DALL-E instructions based on this prompt.
Even if you don’t read Dave’s piece go check out the images generated by DALL-E. They’re beautiful works of art suitable for framing. Seriously.

Twice now President Joe Biden made the decision to visit active war zones not under U.S. military command. These trips, to Kyiv in February and to Tel Aviv this week, are without precedent in modern American history. It’s easy to take these visits in stride: It’s the President of the United States! Surely, he has quite a circle of protection. But I think it’s worth reflecting on the vigor and guts—and principle—it took to meet American allies in person to demonstrate American support, despite genuine danger.
Joe Biden has been a great President. I don’t care if he’s “too old” to hold the office. He seems to be doing a pretty damned good job of it. 🇺🇸

Crapware. PC makers have long installed crapware and other superfluous utilities in Windows, providing users with a compromised user experience that didn’t reflect what Microsoft intended. But with Windows 11, now Microsoft installs its own collection of crapware too, in the form of sponsored apps and shortcuts in the Start menu.
Seriously Microsoft? Some of your own software includes ads? That’s pathetic.
At least Apple’s annoying notifications for services are a little better, not by much, but slightly better. 🤬

Detroit Free Press
A politically connected Detroit synagogue president was found stabbed to death Saturday morning outside her home in the city’s Lafayette Park neighborhood, east of downtown.
If you think the war in Gaza and Israel don’t affect us at home, think again.
Hate crimes in the States will most likely continue to climb because of it. 😢

Is M. Night Shyamalan running Apple? The company just announced a Monday night keynote event on the eve of Halloween. The tagline? Scary Fast. Macs are rumored, but what Apple silicon will be inside?
How long have M2 Macs been a thing? I haven’t got a clue. Is the M3 a Halloween surprise just in time for the holiday season? 🤔
Joseph Heck
Over the summer, I started working with the Automerge team to bring its Rust-language core to Swift.
Joseph is a really nice guy and I’m excited to see him working on something he’s so passionate about. I’ll be keeping an eye on his progress. 🦀

Buffer will never be removed, and probably never even deprecated, but at least the community can slowly move away from it. My hope is that the Node.js team will at least start discouraging the use of Buffer.
I know nothing about JavaScript but it’s always nice to see someone advocate for making code safer.
Do you use Buffer in your code? Maybe it’s time to change that? 🦬

How ethical hacker Jamie Woodruff used a pizza delivery to break into a server room
This made me think of the 1992 film, Sneakers. If you haven’t seen it, go watch it. It’s a great film. 👟
I’d be horrible security for a data center. Pizza? You have pizza? Sure, come on in! 🍕
Victor Tangermann • Futurism
AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard consume an astronomical amount of electricity and water — or, more precisely, the massive data centers that power them do.
The crypto and AI data centers really need to get their act together and start building sources of clean energy to power these monstrosities.

Andy Greenberg • WIRED
They Cracked the Code to a Locked USB Drive Worth $235 Million in Bitcoin. Then It Got Weird
This is a cool story! Again, I think of Sneakers.
I hope this means folks who forgot their passwords are able to crack their keys open and sell off their bitcoin.
Especially the poor dude who has millions in bitcoin. He’s not using this tech, currently, but I hope he’s able to finally be able to cash out. 💸
Marc Elias • Democracy Docket
Republican lawyers are back in the news and are bringing disgrace to the party and profession. Even before the indictments in Georgia, it had been widely reported that at least five, and perhaps all six, of former President Donald Trump’s co-conspirators were Republican lawyers. Now in Georgia, we add several lawyers, some familiar and some new, to the list of Trump’s co-defendants.
At least some of these knuckleheads are pleading guilty and cooperating.
I still say his Orangness will get off scot-free. He’ll delay, delay, delay. Win the Presidency. Pardon everyone he can, destroy democracy, and not leave the White House until he’s dead.
If things get super bad I hope Canada and Mexico will accept American refugees.
Dave Rogers
Sea level rise is a game of inches. It doesn’t take many inches to create miles and miles and miles of problems. And it’s going to take decades to address those problems, so we might as well get started now.
Yay, climate change! 😡
If the Orangeman doesn’t destroy the nation, climate change might.
Dave, we won’t cleanup things on the shoreline. We’ll just let Mother Nature take it and leave a giant mess. Like we do. 😔
Christopher Nichols • Atlas Obscura
One of the reasons people can never be entirely sure about what is going on at Area 51 is that it is a highly classified secret military facility. It was not until 2013 that the United States government even acknowledged the existence and name “Area 51.”
I like this take on Area 51. We don’t need aliens to create crazy technology.
I do like the thought of aliens though. 👽
Daring Fireball
This “now is not the time” argument gets trotted out by Republicans after each and every gun massacre. Right after their tweets offering “thoughts and prayers”. Bullshit. The aftermath of a massacre is the time to demand sane gun control measures.
Yep. More pressure to pass great gun legislation. It’s time for a nationwide ban on assault weapons and other protections.

TWO MONTHS BEFORE
Thomas rolled off the pretty blond all sweaty and panting heavily, feeling terribly empty inside. She was the fourth girl in three weeks and though the sex was okay he knew he wouldn't want to see her again. It seemed that those meaningless fucks couldn't really satisfy him anymore. Physically maybe, but not emotionally. The more girls he laid the more he got filled with a big black void expanding deep inside of him.
It hadn't been a long way from losing his virginity to Anne a few weeks after his arrival in Camp Safe Haven to becoming the womanizer he was now, only six months later.
His time with Anne had been quite nice. He hadn't been in love with her but she was sweet and experienced and she had wanted him badly. So he grabbed the opportunity to finally have sex at the age of 19, almost 20. After discovering that the boy, celebrated as a hero by everyone, was nothing but an ordinary teenager, average to a boring extent and often in a bad, brooding mood, Anne had ditched him after only three weeks.
But he hadn't been lonely ever since. Many of the girls in the camp almost threw themselves at him, he simply had to pick one for his next amorous adventure and he soon found out that casual sex was a great way for him to vent and to let go of all the bad memories and to handle the trauma he was suffering from. He knew his success with women wasn't based on his good looks or his captivating personality. Sure, he was a nice, handsome guy but so were many of the young men around. What the female part of Safe Haven's residents liked about him was his popularity and his status as a hero with the death cure running through his veins. He and his friends had won the big battle against WCKD. Brenda, Jorge, Frypan, Minho, Gally and him. Living legends. They had lost Newt and Teresa on the last part of their road to glory, which made them real legends - dead and gone- buried somewhere under the ruins of the last city. The loss still hurt so much it sometimes made him sick - literally.
And there was something else that attracted the girls. Besides his fame he had achieved a certain questionable reputation as a notorious player over the last months.  If he was honest with himself...he was a man whore...easy to get and easy to get rid off again. But he didn't care. Not about his reputation, not about much in general.
He turned around to face the girl lying beside him, managing to smile at her. "That was great." He got up and started to put his clothes on.
"What are you doing, you don't have to go just yet." Blondie eyed him with a frown. "We can go for another round." She added slyly.
"No, sorry. I gotta go. Gotta get up early tomorrow." Thomas gave her an apologetic smile.
"It's only 8 o' clock"
"Yeah, well, what can I say. I need my beauty sleep." With a little shrug he turned around to leave her  wooden hut. "Bye, Alicia." And with one last look over his shoulder and a forced smile on his lips he stepped out into the cool air. The night was wonderful, the sky full of stars, the temperatures mild and the wind coming from the ocean only a light breeze. He took a deep breath and started walking home to the little shack he shared with his best friend Minho.
Passing the big round hut in the centre of the camp he heard cheering and clapping hands, various voices all talking at once. He decided to find out what was happening and entered the camp's headquarter curiously.
"Thomas, come in. We have great news." Vince waved, beaming with joy, indicating at him to join him besides the RT unit. Thomas made his way through the group of people, greeting some of his friends. There was Jorge, one of the few older adults around. A tough, street-smart man and something like a foster father to Brenda. The pretty petite brunette was standing in the middle of the room, kissing Frypan, her boyfriend, who was a good friend of Thomas. The strong black guy with the babyface hugged Brenda tightly, obviously crazy in love with her. Gally rolled his eyes, nodding in their direction, running a hand through his short blond hair, a grin on his still boyish face that always exuded a mix of anger and grimness, even if he was in a good mood. He used to be Thomas' enemy but now he belonged to his circle of close friends without the shadow of a doubt.
"What's going on?" Thomas asked when he reached Vince. The tall man in his forties with the long blond hair was something between a father and a big brother to him.
"It's the twins. We've just received a radio message from the Horizon. They're coming back tomorrow morning with a big haul. Ended their 2-week quarantine today, the crew is fine, zero infections. They made it, they really made it." Vince hugged him happily. "This is going to be such an improvement, Tommy."
"Yeah, I guess so." Thomas replied, hoping Vince was right.
Well then...I'm finally going to meet the famous twins, he thought. Joe and Kasey Miller. Everyone in Safe Haven knew their story. They had lost their family to the flare and ten years ago, when they were about fifteen years old, they had decided to leave the mainland and to go to sea. They had been living on a houseboat with their parents and thus they knew how to sail a ship. They had managed to repair an old tub. They survived off shore for years, cruising the ocean, docking in several ports, collecting anything useful to survive for the long run and recruiting a little motley crew. That's how they'd met Vince.
In the end they had three ships: the Freedom, the Unity and the Horizon. The little fleet discovered the island that now was Safe Haven and the rest was history.
They'd already left when Thomas and the others had been brought to the camp. There were two ships on this mission.
One under the command of the twins, looking for medical equipment and everything that had to do with books and education. The plan was to build a little hospital and a school for the kids as well as a library.
The construction team, led by Gally, had been working on the buildings almost 24/7 in two shifts over the last months. The hospital and the school had been finished two weeks ago, the library was almost done too. Thomas was part of this team, doing some minor work, like chopping down trees or carrying stones and other materials around. The job was alright, he liked working with his hands and the physically hard work exhausted him so much he couldn't wreck his brain over everything that had happened to him since he had been sent to the glade.
The second ship was under the command of a guy called Parker Higgins, who was a close friend of Vince and the twins. His team was sent out to find technical equipment, all kinds of machines and devices that could be of use to improve the camp's technical standards. Everybody was waiting for their return eagerly. "What about the second ship?" Thomas wanted to know. "No sign of the Freedom and her crew." Vince shook his head with a sad sigh. "But I'm sure they'll be back soon." "Of course." Thomas gave him a reassuring smile.
"I've already told the others. The twins are going to be here tomorrow around nine." Vince said, changing the subject. "I want you and the others at the beach to welcome them, okay? Please, tell Minho and be there in time."
"Sure." Thomas nodded, unsure how to feel about their return.

Rotherham United progressed to the Papa John's Trophy final after a nervy penalty shootout victory against a brave Hartlepool United side.
Pools twice led thanks to calm Joe Grey and Luke Molyneux finishes, but Millers striker Michael Smith powered in two trademark headers to rub out the lead.
After the game went to spot-kicks, both sides missed one apiece in the first five to take the game to sudden death.
Tom Crawford missed for Pools, and Mickel Miller slotted away to win it.
The Millers will play Sutton United in the final at Wembley on 3 April.
While form might have favoured League One leaders Rotherham, having lost just once in their past 11 games before this one, they were given a huge scare by Graeme Lee's side, who have already beaten Blackpool, Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday in cup competitions this term.
Fuelled by dreams of a first Wembley appearance, cup fever took over the Suits Direct Stadium, as a full house, a North Sea breeze and a collected approach gave the home side the impetus to take the game to their higher division opponents.
With the wind in their favour they took control, Grey tucking away a curling David Ferguson free-kick to go in front, and only Viktor Johansson's goalkeeping denied them further joy.
Rotherham made changes at key times, notably bringing on attacking talent in Miller and former Limerick forward Chiedozie Ogbene and adding Ollie Rathbone to midfield in a bid to turn things around, and they did.
Big forward Smith met crosses from Dan Barlaser and Ogbene to drag the visitors back level, after a superb finish from Molyneux restored the Pools lead, rolled through Angus MacDonald's legs and in.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Joe Biden, civil rights leaders and activists blasted law enforcement agencies for their slow response to rioters at the U.S. Capitol, noting the massive show of police force in place for Black Lives Matter demonstrations last ear over police killings of unarmed Black men and women.
Biden said his granddaughter pointed out the unfair difference in images that showed the violence wielded against Black Lives Matter protesters versus the seemingly muted response against those who attacked the U.S. government.
"No one can tell me that if that had been a group of Black Lives Matter protesting yesterday, they wouldn’t have been treated very, very differently than the mob of thugs that stormed the Capitol," Biden said in remarks to the nation Thursday.
Vice President-elect Kamala Harris said Thursday the actions of law enforcement Wednesday highlighted the "two systems of justice" in the U.S.
"We have witnessed two systems of justice: one that let extremists storm the U.S. Capitol yesterday, and another that released tear gas on peaceful protestors last summer," she said on Twitter. "It's simply unacceptable."
Rep. Marcia Fudge, a Democrat from Ohioand former chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, also questioned law enforcement officials' security efforts.
"The Capitol police were unprepared, ineffective and some were complicit. All of them should be held to account," Fudge, who was still in lockdown by the evening and who has been tapped by Biden to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development, told USA TODAY Wednesday night.
Fudge said there's "no question" the response was different than at last year's Black Lives Matter protests at the Capitol. She shared a picture of a row of police standing guard on the steps of the Capitol.
"There is a double standard,'' she said.
As thousands of people of color and allies took to the streets last year to protest police brutality — most of them peacefully — law enforcement often clashed with demonstrators, deploying tear gas and rubber bullets, bruising faces and bodies, and, in one incident that went viral, pushing an elderly man to the ground.
But as thousands of President Donald Trump supporters, mostly white, marched from a campaign-style rally to the Capitol Wednesday and broke into the building as lawmakers were convening to count presidential electoral votes, forcing lawmakers and staff to shelter in place, crowds of law enforcement were notably absent.
Trump, who previously characterized Black Lives Matter protesters as "thugs," said on Twitter that the people involved in the riots Wednesday were "great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Thursday that he applauded Capitol police officers who bravely stood in the line of duty against the "failed insurrection."
"With that said, yesterday represented a massive failure of institutions, protocols, and planning that are supposed to protect the first branch of our federal government," he said in a statement. "A painstaking investigation and thorough review must now take place and significant changes must follow."
The chief of the U.S. Capitol Police defended Thursday his agency’s response from criticism that officers did not stop the incursion. Chief Steven Sund said his agency "had a robust plan" for what he anticipated would be peaceful protests, but what occurred Wednesday was "criminal riotous behavior."
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., however, called for Sund's resignation and said that House Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving, another key security official, had already submitted his resignation. He reports directly to Pelosi, while Sund answers to both the House and Senate. Incoming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he’ll fire the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Michael Stenger once he takes control of the Senate for the GOP later this month.
D.C. police chief Robert J. Contee III said the mob of Trump supporters came to Capitol Hill "following the president's remarks" and was "intent on causing harm to our officers by deploying chemical irritants on police to force entry into the United States Capitol."
But only a small group of riot police stood outside the back of the Capitol building in the early afternoon, and as rioters called for breaching the building, hundreds started swarming into the area, reporters at the scene noted Wednesday.
As people began climbing up the side of the building and on the back balcony, police appeared to retreat. After the break-in, police attempted to secure one section outside the building but were quickly overwhelmed, according to reporters at the scene.
One video posted to social media showed several people in D.C. Capitol Police jackets removing barriers outside the Capitol building, allowing rioters to pass through to the building. Videos posted to Twitter also showed at least one person who appeared to be an officer taking selfies with people who had breached the Capitol. USATODAY has not been able to independently verify the identities of the people in these images.
By Wednesday afternoon, Army Gen. Mark Milley said the D.C. National Guard had been fully activated. "We have fully activated the D.C. National Guard to assist federal and local law enforcement as they work to peacefully address the situation," Miller said in a statement.
Several videos shared to social media Wednesday afternoon showed officials slowly escorting people out of the building. One officer in riot gear could be seen helping a white woman in a Trump hat down the Capitol steps, holding her hand, according to a CNN livestream.
By Wednesday evening, nearly a full day after the rioters first clashed with police Tuesday night, officers began using tear gas and percussion grenades to begin clearing crowds, ahead of a 6 p.m. curfew. In the moments before, there were violent clashes between the police and rioters, who tore railing for the inauguration scaffolding and threw it at the officers.
One woman suffered a fatal gunshot wound inside the capitol, Contee said. At least 13 people were arrested, and five firearms were recovered.
By comparison, in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd, which sparked last year's protest movement, more than 100 people were arrested over the course of three days in Minneapolis. In subsequent days, cities across the country arrested dozens of people in a single night, with Los Angelesarresting more than 500 inone day.
"When Black folks are protesting and progressives are protesting peacefully they were tear-gassed, they were arrested, they were shot with rubber bullets. They were shot with real bullets," Derrick Johnson, president of the national NAACP, said in a telephone interview. "We watched it take place all summer long when people were peacefully demonstrating."
'A fanciful reality':Trump claims Black Lives Matter protests are violent, but the majority are peaceful
Johnson questioned why the Capitol police and other local law enforcement agencies weren’t prepared for thousands of Trump supporters, including the Proud Boys. There had been plenty of warnings on social media and talk shows about the potential for riots, he said.
"We should not be witnessing what we are witnessing today in this nation,'' he said. "It is a global embarrassment.”
Johnson said tens of thousands of people joined protests at Black Lives Matter Plazain Washington without this level of violence. "None of this took place," he said.
The majority of Black Lives Matter-affiliated protests over the summer were peaceful, according to a report by the U.S. Crisis Monitor, a joint effort including Princeton University in New Jersey that collects and analyzes real-time data on demonstrations and political violence in the United States.
Kofi Ademola, a local Chicago activist who helped organize civil rights protests throughout the summer, said he was not surprised Wednesday by the police response.
"It's not any shock that we see this huge contradiction that we can storm a capitol ... break into elected officials’ offices, the chamber, and create other chaos trying to perform a fascist coup, and we see little to no consequences,'' he said.
"But Black protesters here in D.C. and Chicago, we’re heavily policed, brutalized, for literally saying, 'Don’t kill us.' There was no planned insurrections. We were literally just advocating for our lives. It speaks volumes about the values of this country. It doesn’t care about our lives."
CNN commentator Van Jones highlighted the discrepancy in a tweet Wednesday.
"Imagine if #BlackLivesMatter were the ones who were storming the Capitol building," he wrote. "Thousands of black people laying siege to the seat of government – in the middle of a joint session of Congress? Just imagine the reaction."
At the Capitol Wednesday, some lawmakers were holed up in their offices and other places. Several would not say where they were for safety reasons. Staffers were cleared out of the press galleries and the Capitol by the afternoon.
"The after-action review will determine what failures occurred and why,'' said U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Democrat from Mississippi and chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. "The plans should have anticipated the potential for what happened today."
Black Lives Matter Global Network called the law enforcement response to Wednesday's riots hypocritical.
"When Black people protest for our lives, we are all too often met by National Guard troops or police equipped with assault rifles, shields, tear gas and battle helmets,'' the group said in a statement. "When white people attempt a coup, they are met by an underwhelming number of law enforcement personnel who act powerless to intervene, going so far as to pose for selfies with terrorists, and prevent an escalation of anarchy and violence like we witnessed today."
"Make no mistake, if the protesters were Black, we would have been tear-gassed, battered, and perhaps shot,'' the group wrote.
The chaos that unfolded Wednesday stands in particularly harsh contrast to the law enforcement presence seen when U.S. and military police drove protesters out of Lafayette Square, located between the White House and the historic St. John's Episcopal Church, shortly before a presidential photo op with a Bible at the church on June 1. Officers used smoke canisters, shields, pepper balls and horses to force demonstrators from the park.
As violent Trump supporters climbed the steps of the Capitol Wednesday, Trey Williamson, of Burke, Virginia, stood nearby while straddling his bike, arguing with those who would listen. He wore a helmet with Black Lives Matter written on it.
Williamson, a food safety director at a large restaurant, was in Washington, D.C., last year when Trump had the streets cleared so that he could take his photo in front of St. John's. "I got tear-gassed and all I was doing was riding my bike trying to see what was going on," Williamson said.
Lafayette Square photo op:How police pushed protesters aside
He said the police response at the Capitol was lukewarm in comparison to what he experienced during Black Lives Matter protests over the summer. "If there were nothing but Black people up there, there would’ve been a lot of injuries," he said. "It sucks, but I know that this is how it is. I know that because Trump people have felt more comfortable to be at ease with their racism."
U.S. Rep. Ron Kind, D-Wis., was holed up in his Capitol Hill office Wednesday as rioters continued their assault on the Capitol. During a Zoom call with reporters, said he and his staff were safe and weren’t leaving. Kind said he intended to return to the House chamber to continue the debate over the certification of electoral votes.
"Things are still not in control, unfortunately," he said.
Kind blamed Trump, who has been reluctant to denounce white nationalists and fraudulently insisted he won the November election, for encouraging the violence Wednesday.
"When he was encouraging the demonstrations, tweeting out that this was going to be quote 'wild.' I mean, what would he expect the reaction would be, especially when you're talking about the Proud Boys, militia groups, white supremacists coming into our nation's capital today," Kind said.
Bernice King, daughter of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., put out a series of statements on Twitter Wednesday calling on law enforcement to engage rioters "with the same humanity and discipline with which they should have engaged people who were outraged by a police officer kneeling on George Floyd’s neck."
"What many are saying is true: If this were Black Lives Matter storming the Capitol, tanks would have been in the city by now," she wrote. "The response tells the story of our nation’s racist history and present. How can we stop it from being the future?"

1929 Ford roadster pickup equipped with a Four-Banger has V-8 Punch
If you’ve been a reader of STREET RODDER for the past decade or so you’ve probably seen the name Jeff Eischen pop up every couple of years. He’s certainly not a “household name” like some of the star hot rod builders who have their own TV shows nor does he have the big 50-foot car hauler parked at events across the country. Jeff has taken an almost opposite approach: he keeps a low profile (that’s his personality), and he turns out some truly spectacular cars (that’s his immense talent).
STREET RODDER first found Jeff at a Goodguys event in 2005 when it gave him a Top 10 award (since rebranded as the Painless Performance Products/STREET RODDER Top 100 program) for a little track-nose roadster he brought to the show. We found him again two years later with a Garage Scene profile on a 1929 roadster pickup he was working on.
Then, from 2008-2011, his cars started being featured annually in the magazine (Feb. ’08 a 1931 Ford tub; Jun. ’09 a T roadster; Sep. ’10 a 1932 roadster pickup; Sep. ’11 a 1929 Ford coupe), with a small break before reappearing in the Aug. ’14 issue with another 1929 Ford coupe.
After the first Model A coupe debuted, hot rodder and ex-IMSA Porsche 962 racer Bruce Leven started paying attention to what Jeff was doing and soon thereafter began a relationship with Jeff where Leven would underwrite the build with the stipulation Bruce’s Garage in Washington would become the eventual resting spot for the cars. The pair do work well together, as they have similar tastes, and there is a lot of discussion and back-and-forth when the cars are going together. The two first produced a 1929 Ford roadster pickup, then the second Model A coupe Jeff built in 2014, and now the pair’s latest effort: the Gemsa/Leven Ford Special.
The moniker may be a bit misleading as Joe Gemsa, the brilliant machinist from the ’50s until his death in 1995 (and who developed single- and dual-overhead cam conversions for the Model B engine), didn’t own or work on this car, but one of his rare and wonderful cylinder head configurations is one of the car’s highlights—of which there are many.
Much of what you see on this vehicle, and nearly everything you don’t see, was scratch-built by Jeff in his home garage, located a few miles outside Columbus, Ohio. For this roadster, he started with a computer-aided chassis design, which he then fab’d out of 2×4 boxed steel. He added a crossmember and X-member from Pinkee’s, and set the suspension up out back with a one-off hairpin design that bends inboard when it gets close to the bells of the Winters’ quick-change (4.11:1).
A pair of Andre Hartford 506 friction shocks (from London, England) connect with a set of quarter-elliptic leaf springs from Posies, and a Panhard bar keeps the quickie centered. Up front, a tube axle features another set of transverse-mounted Posies quarter-elliptic springs, another pair of Hartford friction shocks, plus another Panhard bar. Magnum spindles hang off the ends of the axle where a set of faux-Buick disc brake drums (from Alan Johnson) give off a vintage appearance but with contemporary stopping power.
Steering is accomplished with a TrackMaster Products’ side steer box (available in 16:1 or 24:1 ratios) aided by a steering column, Pitman arm, and an engine-turned, three-spoke, stainless steering wheel all fab’d by Jeff. The wire road wheels from Dayton (16×4 and 16×6) certainly evoke the look found on racing cars from a century earlier, but are shod with present-day Excelsior 500 and 750 rubber.
With the chassis out of the way, attention gets turned toward the drivetrain. Being the racer that he is, Leven picks the type of motor for his projects and, though Jeff’s own history is extensive (including stints with the racing programs of IMSA, SCCA, CART Indy, as well as a team member at the endurance races at Sebring and Daytona) and his penchant for using really unique engines in his rides (such as a Miller-equipped Model B banger), getting the motor working in this car required some outside help.
The 210-inch four-cylinder is from 1923 and was built and tuned by Dan Brewer at Shaver Specialties Racing Engines in Torrance, California. As the name implies, Shavers does build racing engines, both in crate form for any use as well as ones used (and abused) in off-road, circle track, and roundy-round tracks across the country, and they’ve been doing so for nearly four decades.
Internally, counterweights were added to the crank, and the assembly was built using Carrillo rods and JE pistons (0.060 over). The dual-overhead Gemsa camshaft configuration is pretty rare, and the head (set up with a 9:1 compression ratio) is fed by a pair of S&S Super G Shorty sidedraft carbs. Originally designed for the 1980-1990 Harley V-Twins and Sportster motorcycles, Jeff adapted the carbs by fab’ing his own log-type intake manifold.
Located throughout the engine compartment you’ll notice small (about the size of a stick of gum) sticker strips made by Thermax attached to temperature-critical parts (such as the radiator, intake manifold, or backside of the electric water pump) that gives the driver instant pinpoint analysis of the drivetrain’s operating temps.
Externally you’ll find a Meziere electric water pump, a Derale Performance fan for the Walker radiator, an ignition system that utilizes a Vertex ignition and solid cotton-wrapped wires, and an Eischen-designed and built exhaust system that starts with 2-inch stainless steel headers that work back down the passenger side of the roadster into 3-inch stainless tubing outfitted with a Stainless Works muffler insert. The ultraclean and tidy engine mounts to a 1939 Ford box (with a truck tailshaft), outfitted with a Ford tractor clutch, an aluminum flywheel, all operated by a Pinkee’s pedal assembly, modified by Jeff. Both the 12-gallon gas tank (made by Jeff) and the driveshaft (from Coleman Machine) are aluminum.
Like the engine, the design of the car featured input from several sources, including Brookville Roadsters (supplied the steel 1929 Ford roadster pickup body), Moal Coachbuilders (the bulbous track nose and its grille), and more of Jeff’s handiwork (such as the four-piece hood that features stainless steel mesh grilles in each of the pieces). And much of what attaches one item to another on this ride is secured with stainless steel safety wire.
Once Jeff was satisfied with the fit of all the body parts, everything was sent to Petar Brown of Brown Restorations, who has painted the last few cars for Jeff (though normally they’re black). This time British Racing Green was the preferred color, and Brown used PPG products to get the job done.
The headlights, which might be easily confused with a modern-day, flat-face, off-road type lens, are actually Ryan-Lite lamps, which were used on high-end cars back in the ’20s (think Stutz or Lincoln phaetons). The 3-in-1 stop/taillight, mounted above the exposed gas tank, is your average 1916 Cadillac unit.
Mike Barr, from Metal Brite in Dayton, Ohio, was responsible for the car’s nickel plating, which includes the subtle roll bar (bent by Tubular Technologies in Hilliard, Ohio) just barely poking up from behind the cockpit. Jeff also fab’d the windshield frame, which follows the top edge of the cowl and flows into integral posts, with tabs every 9 inches or so to help secure the Plexiglas windshield as well as the side glass at the door tops.
Inside the cockpit Jeff opted for a Brookville 1932 Ford roadster dash, which he finished in crinkle black paint before adding a pair of Classic Instruments gauges in a panel Jeff made. To their right another panel holds twin Meylan stopwatches—typically used by the navigator in a timed road course. Jeff tapped Robert McCarter, whom he’d used on previous builds, to complete the simple-looking interior. McCarter used square-weave carpet, complemented by custom speedster-type bucket seats covered in brown leather—the same material used to line the cockpit and doors.
Once the car was finished, it debuted at the 2017 Grand National Roadster Show in Southern California. It was perhaps unfortunate where it was placed—in the shadow of the other car Bruce Leven had entered: a spectacular 1951 Ford Gran Turismo with a stunning road racing chassis. Most folks didn’t get a chance to study the incredible work that went into the little roadster but, if they had, they’d have come away with a new appreciation for how hard it must be to make something so simple look so damn good!

ABERDEEN 0 CELTIC 3 (May 4, 2019)
MIKAEL LUSTIG got the show on the road with a superb diving header to sizzle an effort beyond the helpless Joe Lewis five minutes before the interval at Pittodrie.
The Hoops took firm control following the turnaround and Jozo Simunovic, who had scored the winner against Kilmarnock the previous week, powered in a header from a left-wing corner-kick from Callum McGregor for the second goal in the 53rd minute.
The Dons, who had troubled Scott Bain on a couple of occasions in the opening 45 minutes, were swept aside and Tom Rogic raced 40 yards before setting up Odsonne Edouard for the third goal in the fading moments.
Neil Lennon, who had kick-started the silverware haul at Rugby Park in 2012, celebrated big-style with the cavorting, happy visiting fans.
Now there was the little matter of emulating Jock Stein’s all-conquering team who racked up nine successive championships from 1966/67 to 1973/74.
Who would bet against it?

~~~~~~~~
With the return of the Horizon the good mood came back to the camp. Everyone was in high spirits and after dinner they gathered around a big campfire often and had a good time, with a lot of talking, music, singing and even dancing.
Joe turned out to be a real showman, entertaining and lots of fun. An extrovert, everybody liked and a very good musician and singer. He was a born leader, with a natural authority no one would ever doubt.  Kasey preferred to stay in the background but she was fun too, radiating positive energy and optimism that was so much needed in these dark times. She was always surrounded by her friends and got along very well with all the newcomers too, making everybody feel welcome and part of the big Safe Haven family.
Carson however was a strange guy. Skinny, his complexion white like a bedsheet, with a boyish face but tough as old boots and surprisingly strong. He was always on his own, living in his hut like a hermit, but he was a genius regarding all technical, mechanical and electrical matters, working endless hours on all kinds of engines and devices but he never joined their little after work parties.
Marjorie was the biggest surprise. A real badass of a woman. She looked like an angel, her tanned skin flawless, her hazel eyes amazing, pretty like a doll but she was tougher than any man, her mind razor-sharp, and her heart made of pure gold. She was witty and sarcastic and Thomas really liked her right from the start.
Quincy was quite different from what his looks seemed to tell. The perfect example for "never judge a book by it's cover". He was a tall man, black, handsome, a real beefcake. His good looks, the toned body, his sunny smile...it all screamed player, party animal, heartbreaker but it turned out he was pretty much the opposite: shy and quiet but always polite and nice. He didn't talk a lot and always seemed to feel a little uncomfortable around others but when he was with Kasey he opened up and showed a side of himself that was funny, full of energy and ideas and not aloof at all. They seemed to be good friends and the jealous little voice inside of Thomas' head often wondered if they were possibly even more than that.
When he asked Marjorie about it one night, sitting on the beach at the fire, watching Kasey and Quincy fool around, singing and dancing to a silly song Joe played on his guitar, she burst out laughing. "No honey. No way. Quincy isn't interested in women, you know."
"He's gay?" Thomas didn't quite manage to hide his surprise. "Bingo!" Marjorie simply said with a wink. She and Quincy were skilled mechanics, taking care of the ships, working together hand in hand every day, so Thomas was quite sure she knew Quincy very well and was telling the truth and a feeling of relief flooded his brain. It must have been written all over his face because Marjorie gave him a funny look - somewhere between realization and disbelief - but she didn't say anything more.
A little later Kasey joined them, plopping down in the sand beside them.
"Guys...Quincy is wearing me out." she laughed out of breath. "And he's still full of energy." she added, nodding at him. He was taking off his shirt, getting ready for a swim in the ocean with Gally, Minho and Brenda.
"Yeah, your dancing looked damn exhausting. Need something to drink? I was just about to get a bottle of water." Marjorie said, getting up, tapping off the sand from her butt and her legs.
"Oh yes, that would be great. Thanks Marge." Kasey smiled at her gratefully. They watched her leave and after a short moment of silence Kasey turned to Thomas. "So how did you like your first week in your new job? I hope you like the work? And your boss of course." She gave him a wink, that made the butterflies in his belly arise and flutter around like crazy.
"Yeah, I love it. The work is great and the boss is a little strict but a real treat for the eyes." he grinned, suddenly feeling confident enough to try a little flirt. After the first days of working together he'd finally managed to shake off his nervousness. Getting used to the fact that he was helplessly in love with Kasey he'd started to feel good around her, acting more natural day by day.
"Well...you don't look too bad yourself." she replied laughing. It wasn't quite the reaction he had been hoping for. No blushing, no signs of sheepishness or excitement, girls normally showed when he started flirting with them. But it was a start. She found him good looking or at least not bad looking. That was something he could build on.
"You're really funny and quick-witted, you know that? I got a completely wrong impression when we met for the first time." Kasey stretched out her tall, slim body beside him, crossing her long legs, cocking her head, looking straight at him, which made Thomas feel self-conscious all of a sudden.
"Really? How's that?"
Kasey hesitated for a moment. "Well, you seemed pretty reserved and…"
"Dumb?" Thomas jumped in.
"I was about to say shy."
She smiled at him, shifting into a sitting position.
"I thought you were a man."
"Ouch...I look like a man?" She was really shocked for a split second which made Thomas laugh.
"No, you don't. It's your name. I heard everyone talk about Joe and Kasey Miller and I automatically assumed you were male twins."
"Oh...this. Yeah, that's why I hated my name when I was younger. All my friends had such pretty names like Sarah and Isabell and Maria...and I was Kay." She rolled her eyes. "But our parents were expecting two boys so it was a surprise when I turned out to be a girl and they just stuck by the names they had already chosen. Didn't help much that I even looked like a boy."
"You? That's hard to imagine."
"What can I say. I was a chubby little girl with short hair, dressed in practical clothes, climbing trees and playing ball with her brother…"
"I bet you were a cute little brat." Thomas grinned.
"Who says I'm not a brat anymore." she replied, raising her eyebrows with a smirk. The immediate association with spanking her naughty little ass made Thomas dick twitch, leaving him speechless. When Marjorie returned right at this moment he was relieved and annoyed at the same time.
Blushing like a school boy, Kasey thought, watching his reaction. That's fucking cute.
She gave him one last wink before turning to Marjorie for a little chat.
That’s it, hope you liked chapter 4.
Commute Might Be Biggest Hurdle to Opening Office…
As corporate executives plan how to safely bring employees back to work in the office, a thorny issue has arisen over which they have no control: public transportation.
The mass transit systems that allowed some of the world’s most densely populated financial capitals to grow and flourish for a century, including New York City and Tokyo, are emerging as a major concern because of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Challenges with commuting could keep offices in those locations shut for longer than other places where people can more easily drive to work, human resources and real-estate executives say.
Companies are starting to consider alternatives to mass transit, such as company car allowances, private bus services and leasing smaller office space in suburban locations closer to where many workers live.
“Extremely large companies might offer to subsidize people’s purchases of private vehicles or subsidize rental cars,” said Lindsay Burke, co-chair of the employment practice at law firm Covington & Burling LLP.
To avoid putting workers through a public commute, some companies are considering leases to open smaller satellite locations, said Scott Rechler, chief executive of real-estate investment firm RXR Realty. He is getting calls from office tenants in Manhattan looking for space in the borough of Queens and Westchester County, where rents are cheaper and many employees have cars.
Mr. Rechler decided to open smaller spaces for his own employees after running a ZIP Code analysis on RXR’s New York area workforce. He plans to launch satellite offices in Brooklyn, Long Island City, Uniondale and Westchester, with the goal of reducing the number of people using public transit.
Some employees say they fear using public transportation because they might come in contact with a fellow passenger infected with Covid-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, and they won’t be able to avoid people who refuse to follow state or local mandates to wear masks or other face coverings in public.
The pandemic could significantly alter the way many companies operate, with more employers willing to embrace work-at-home arrangements long after offices are reopened. Already, some executives have said they would work differently going forward.
Anaplan Inc.,
an enterprise software company with employees in San Francisco, London and Tokyo, will soon hold focus groups to ask workers how they feel about returning to the office and what their transportation options are, said Marilyn Miller, the company’s chief people officer.
“There’s a whole series of things that have to be thought through before they even get to the front door of the office,” she said of the company’s plans to reopen. Those employees who are more dependent on buses, trains and subways may choose to work from home longer than employees who are less dependent on public transportation, Ms. Miller said. The company also has offices in cities including Minneapolis and Plano, Tex.
Once inside the workplace, social distancing can be maintained through one-way hallways, limiting elevator use to one person at a time and closing corporate cafeterias and providing boxed lunches instead, HR and real estate planners say. The more fundamental issue that could restrict reopening in a place such as New York City is “Can people even get to work?” said Mary Good, chief people officer of Squarespace Inc.
For weeks, Squarespace executives have been analyzing floor plans and meeting on video calls to create a detailed office-by-office plan to bring workers back. The technology company has locations in New York City, Portland, Ore., and Dublin, Ireland. Dublin, for instance, has had fewer cases of Covid-19 and could allow businesses to reopen sooner.
Some U.S. offices are highly reliant on public transit, Ms. Good said. New York’s sprawling subway system moved more than 8.6 million riders on a typical weekday before the pandemic, and Portland’s aboveground light rail lines connect that city’s major neighborhoods.
Some companies are considering the idea of setting up private van or bus services. NewYork-Presbyterian, one of New York’s largest private health-care systems, is using private coach buses to run about 30 routes around the city and surrounding areas, allowing essential medical workers at its hospitals to bypass the subway and commuter trains. Capacity is capped at 50 percent on each bus to ensure distancing, and a cleaning person scrubs interior surfaces after every trip, said Joe Ienuso, who runs the hospital system’s facilities and real estate. Other staffers were offered free parking in lots adjacent to hospitals or discounts on car rentals and moped sharing services.
Debbie Spero, a manager of sales and new business development for a staffing and consulting firm in Manhattan, takes the train from her Upper West Side apartment to midtown. She said she’s concerned about being able to keep 6 feet away from other riders in a subway car and worried that people may not wear masks.
“Do I trust people in the subway? Absolutely not,” she said. “On the other hand, what are my options for getting to my office? Not so many.”
Gary Frey, an executive coach and head of business development for a public accounting firm in Charlotte, N.C., said he is eager to return to work because he misses the camaraderie of his colleagues. His car commute takes less than 20 minutes.
“I’m fortunate. I live fairly close-in,” he said, adding that if he had to deal with public transit in another city, he might feel differently. “The subway would give me pause.”
