Alejandro Jodorowsky @alejandro.jodorowsky turns 93 today. Happy birthday, Maestro. Jodorowsky is known as a writer of graphic stories, mainly in a world he created that has been called the “Jodoverse,” which includes The Incal (art by Moebius) and Metabarons (art by Gimenez). His primary occupation is that of filmmaker whose major works are “El Topo” (1970) and “The Holy Mountain” (1973). These days, the film for which he’s best known is one he didn’t direct about a movie he didn’t make: the documentary “Jodorowsky’s Dune.” This is a poster (swipe for details) by artist Hugo Emmanuel Figueroa @hugoemmanuelfigueroa for that movie. The poster, like the story the documentary tells, is chock full of weirdness we can’t even begin to go into here. Just enjoy it. . #jodorowsky #alejandrojodorowsky #jodoverse #incal #dune #frankherbert #hugoemmanuelfigueroa #movieposter #frankherbert https://www.instagram.com/p/CaFg7C7uyab/?utm_medium=tumblr

Enter The Jodoverse -- Where To Start?
Enter The Jodoverse — Where To Start?
Alejandro Jodorowsky is one of the world’s most prolific and influential cult filmmakers. He is also known for a vast array of comic books, some interconnected and other not. Fans of the documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune may be curious to explore more of his work, but unsure where to start. Having seen all of his films and read comics like The Incal, The Metabarons, and the first three volumes of The…

Story : Alejandro Jodorowsky Writer : Jerry Frissen Artist : Valentin Secher ( Humanoids : 2016 )
The first thing you notice about this over-sized hardcover deluxe edition is that it’s gorgeously illustrated.
The first thing you notice about the story is that, in the far-flung future, everybody is a total jerk, even the “good” guy, but that’s okay, since it’s the only way to survive in the dog-eat-dog milieu that is the Jodoverse.
It’s easy to cheer for the Metabaron, easy to admire this protagonist’s powerful intellect, cool demeanor and devotion to victory at any cost.
It’s also easy to hate the bad guys, because they’re very bad indeed. In this book, bad guys announce their evil, frequently pointing out how much they enjoy being powerful, so that they can revel in violence and cruelty. Remember, this is space opera, which has a long tradition of forthright evil, for example with Ming the Merciless, Darth Vader, and many of the people in the Dune movie.
Moreover, there is no karmic retribution in the Jodoverse, as in more conventional stories. It’s not their sins that threaten to bring these evil space oligarchs low – setting themselves against the Metabaron is simply poor decision-making born of hubris, because The Metabaron is a warrior born, always focused on victory and how to get there. He doesn’t make bad decisions, and his self-mastery makes him immune to petty hubris.
But can the Metabaron beat the combined resources of a galactic empire ?
This book is primarily escape fiction, and in this it serves its purpose well : the story got and kept my complete attention. At times, I got lost in the sheer majesty of Jodorowsky’s literally cosmic vision – I deeply felt that pleasant sense of captivated attention I get from reading something really good, especially in graphic format. It’s a big reason why I read comics in the first place.
Another thing : although this far-future dystopian tale seems simplistic on its surface, it has an amazing depth, considering topics as diverse as survival and honor, faith and fate.
And then there’s Valentin Secher’s art, which is so astounding that I’m left wordless, out of fear I won’t do it justice. You’ve got to see it to believe it.
This is my second exposure to the Jodoverse, the first being Showman Killer, Volume One, and I would give The Metabaron, Book 1 the same recommendation I gave Showman Killer, i.e., I would recommend this title to all readers of graphic novels, and especially to those who read books for the art in them.

The crown jewel Even Jodorowsky's other comics masterpieces couldn't prepare me for the deranged cosmic beauty of this book. For anyone new to his work, this might be the perfect place to start, and you MUST start. The vast sci fi fantasy universe of intersecting stories Jodorowsky has created that includes the Incal, the Metabarons, and the Technopriests, is among the very greatest works of imagination ever produced. I believe it stands among titans like the Sandman, the original Star Wars movies, Dune, Lord of the Rings, etc. Metabarons could be the capstone of the Jodoverse, as the unbridled imagination of this book goes even beyond the Incal and the Technopriests. Sometimes there is a single panel, a single sentence, that you realize could have been developed into its own entire saga, and in this day and age it would have been, by someone with far less vision. In The Metabarons, mind blowing ideas are tossed out with a nonchalant regularity that is almost maddening. It is a wonder to behold. It is still more a wonder that this man's work in comics is so little known in the US. If you are here, reading this, buy this book while it is in print and relatively cheap, read it, and lend it to everyone you know who might appreciate the absurd levels of imagination on display here. Oh and the art by Juan Gimenez is exquisite as well. Go to Amazon
A Jodo Epic! Jodorowsky is pure magic and Giminez's art is unreal. The Metabarons is like an Homerian epic of Conan and Dune mixed together. Word to the wise though, do not read the intro to the last story supplement before reading The Incal by Jodorowsky and Moebius (spoilers). Other than that, loved, loved, loved this book! The Jodoverse is one of the best sci-fi universes out there, as long you have a penchant for the barbarically absurd psychedelic. :) Go to Amazon
Space Mythology Jodo and Gimenez deliver an at times laugh out loud, over the top, Greek myth Shakespearean epic of hyper-machismo, earth shattering emotional displays, implausible realities, abject cruelty, and gender dismorpho-bending even that would shock even a 25 year old David Bowie. I don't know who's more mad: Jodo for writing this scatological opera or Gimenez for hand painting every panel of its 536 pages. Go to Amazon
An epic of epics An incredible work! The art and story are moving on so many levels that its hard to encompass their prestige and mystique in a simple review. A must have for lovers of "The Incal" Go to Amazon
This book is awesome. The illustrations are baddass and Jodorowsky's stories are ... This book is awesome. The illustrations are baddass and Jodorowsky's stories are everything you wish for from the person that gave us The Holy mountain and el topo. Go to Amazon
Great collection, timeless Great collection, timeless, I only wished that the illustrations introducing each chapter were bigger as cover of the original books. Go to Amazon
Four Stars Great art. Crazy concepts. A very operatic story. Lots of bathos. Go to Amazon
If you like graphic novels like this should be top on your list. If you like graphic novels like this should be top on your list. Go to Amazon
