I don’t see how you give Murphy two rounds. Definitely won the 2nd, can even argue a 10-8 but she got out struck in the first round, both in terms of volume and in terms of damaging shots. Then she got lit up for the entirety of the third.

How will the UFC bring Shahbazyan along? And what’s next for Brunson?

Saturday’s UFC Fight Night card was a cold dose of reality for a pair of fighters who appeared to be on the precipice of major breakthroughs. Edmen Shahbazyan ran into the stiff offense of Derek Brunson and suffered the first loss of his career, while Joanne Calderwood saw her immediate title hopes shrink after taking a short-notice fight and falling by submission to Jennifer Maia.
Certainly not a masterclass but definitely a definitive win for Calderwood. Eye’s constant pressure led to nothing but minutes of her pressing Calderwood into the cage. Jojo was able to do work at range behind a really nice front kick to the body/knee of Eye that gave her space to throw her hands. When they did tie up in the clinch, Jojo outworked Eye there with knees and uppercuts. One thing Jojo was doing that I really like were knee tap TD attempts. She managed to get one in the 2nd and then would feint it into uppercuts that caught Eye by surprise. A messy fight, mostly because Calderwood is not really all that good at dictating where the fight takes place or in really controlling people when she ties them up, but a great win for Calderwood nonetheless.
