WQAU Jayfeather and Jay's Wing
As I mentioned in my Hollyclaw post, Jayfeather is going through some weird time travel possession stuff during po3/oots and I thought that Jayfeather's time torture deserved its own post.
So Jaypaw is first sent back in time into Jay's Wing's body during Outcast instead of Long Shadows, and instead of Jaypaw walking into the tunnels in the present and out of the tunnels in the past, Rock basically triggers a stroke in Jaypaw's mind, leaving him malliable enough to mentally transport temporarily into the body of Jay's Wing, who was in the tunnels at the time. Jaypaw does not consent to this by the way.
Jay's Wing is not Jayfeather's previous incarnation, he's just some poor dude that Rock picked out of convinience. Jaypaw possessing Jay's Wing's body essentially tears both of their minds apart and patchworks them back together, with parts of the other cat's brain thrown in for good measure.
Instead of The Ancients leaving solely due to prey shortage, Furled Bracken (who is now the equivalent to a Stone Teller) has a vision of the sun disappearing from the sky a few days after Jay's Wing emerges from the tunnels. The Ancients immediately decide to cast stone about what the fuck they should do and Jay's wing ends up as the deciding vote. He chooses to leave after realizing that these cats are the ancestors of The Tribe of Rushing Water.
Also this wasn't just one clean trip, Jaypaw was there for about a week total, but every day or so was being dragged back to Thunderclan for brief spurts of consciousness before Rock gave him another stroke, desperately trying to keep Jaypaw back with The Ancients.
So when Jaypaw returns from this experience, it's easy to say he's been completely rewired. Leafpool tells him that he's been unconscious for a whole quarter moon and Jaypaw tells her everything.
Leafpool freaks out a bit and that's why she was so quick to drive Sol out later in the book.
Every aspect of Jaypaw's mind has bits missing, bits out of place, bits that were never there to begin with. Jaypaw is increasingly frustrated that everything about himself has been tainted and replaced, he doesn't know what parts were Jay's Wing and which parts are him, and to make things worse the whole clan notices immediately that Jaypaw is not the cat he was before his stroke and they start walking on eggshells around him.
Jaypaw takes weeks to physically recover enough to leave the camp (regaining awareness, relearning movement and balance, figuring out how to understand what anyone is saying ever, etc.) but he's never going to recover mentally from his brief time as Jay's Wing.
But wait! There's more! During Omen of the Stars, when Jayfeather is with The Tribe (this is the first time we've travelled back to them since The New Prophey in the WQAU), Rock comes to him for the first time in years and tells him that "he's sorry to do this again", and triggers another stroke, sending Jayfeather back into Jay's Wing's body. Instead of being frequently pulled back to the present, he stays continuously in Jay's Wing's body for days, and he begins to think that he's trapped forever.
So with the thought that "oh I guess I'm never seeing my friends and family again" Jay's Wing allows himself to fall for Half Moon, while also helping The Ancients sort out their inner conflict about leaving the mountains (also he's not the one to teach them everything about their own culture that's dumb as shit in canon).
Jay's Wing sees the spirit of Rock in the cave and Rock tells him that his time is up with The Ancients, Jay's Wing is furious, ripping into Rock for splicing his mind when he was just a child and for destroying every part of himself that he thought he knew.
Rock apologizes again and tells Jay's Wing that the reason his stay has been continuous this time is because his body as Jayfeather is too weak to drag his mind back, if Jay's Wing stays here, Jayfeather will die. Rock says that Jay's Wing cannot be sustained if Jayfeather dies and he wishes he didn't have to put Jayfeather though everything that's happened to him.
Jay's Wing pleads for just a few minutes to say goodbye, and Rock melts into the shadows to let Jay's Wing make his peace. He tells Half Moon that his destiny lies somewhere else, and if he got the choice, he would choose to bring her with him. Half Moon becomes the Stoneteller and Jayfeather returns to his body, still in The Tribe's cave.
Although he only has one stroke this time, his mind is totally spliced with Jay's Wing. He can't walk and has to be carried home the whole way, and when he returns to Shadowclan, he asks Blackstar for permission to retire once he trains an apprentice to replace him (Flameflower/Flametail of course drowned before Jayfeather came to Shadowclan and Littlecloud probably couldn't handle the whole clan by himself), and Blackstar agrees, promising him an apprentice from the next litter born (that cat ends up being Ryeheart/Grassheart).
That's all I have to say about Jayfeather's time travel stuff for now, he's got other stuff going on unrelated to this, but this is just covering the Jay's Wing stuff.
Anyways ty for reading and if you have any requests or questions relating to the WQAU just send an ask ^^

what if
we pushed the ancients moving to the mountains by like a year
fallen leaves still died in the tunnels, but everyone saw that as a fluke/bad luck/"it's sad, but it happens" (and also he should've waited until after the rain but he was too impatient, it could've happened to anyone that wasn't paying attention to the weather or was too impatient to wait)
Jay's Wing has been getting bad feelings about the tunnels, and the territory in general ever since just before Fallen Leaves died because twolegs had been building a couple of nests in the territory. He keeps getting these strange feelings that the cats need to move and so has been trying to get the ancients to form an actual comprehensive group for moons and leave the territory, but no one really listens and brushes him off, except for his friend Half Moon who tries to help if she can, but also tries to chill Jay's Wing out so he doesn't seem entirely crazy to every other cat.
Lion's Roar, who even though he was barely an adult was considered one of the strongest cats of the group, barely survives his sharpclaw assessment in the tunnels because even though the weather was clear and it hadn't rained at all in a couple of days, the tunnels suddenly flooded.
Jay's Wing and Half Moon do some snooping and they find out twolegs have been taking water from the lake, using it for something that neither of the cats could comprehend, but it had something to do with giant monsters that had shown up in the forest, and then later twolegs dumped water, which leaked into the tunnels and caused the sudden flooding.
There had been more monsters than ever before on the thunderpath and now they weren't just on the thunderpath, they were in the forest! And a bunch of twolegs with them, even setting up camps and marking a chunk of territory out with weird sticks, rocks, and vines.
On the far side of the territory, where the forest thinned into moorland, there were even more twolegs and monsters and more thunderpaths were being made. The twolegs had also been cutting down the trees that dotted the area, marking an even larger chunk of territory with their borders, and building a few more nests.
When Jay's Wing and Half Moon told the cats this, Furled Bracken brushes them off saying that there's plenty of territory and they can simply stay closer to the lake and avoid those areas. This infuriates Lion's Roar, saying that the twolegs dumping their water nearly got him killed. Not to mention his brother and sister had been killed before they could even become sharpclaws because of the monsters in the forest, and his other brother had been captured by the twolegs. Dove's Wing brings up how her and Jay's Wing's mother had been killed by a monster moons before, when monsters were just starting to become more common, and now things had become even worse.
Lion's Roar allies himself with Jay's Wing and Half Moon and he quickly becomes closer with them. A few days later the three cats go to where there were giant monsters in the forest, bringing Furled Bracken and Stone Song to show them the severity of what was happening. They find that the situation had become even worse, and that the twolegs and monsters had torn up the terrain and were now using monsters with massive jaws and teeth to dig into the rock and earth itself.
The cats are appalled by the destruction, but Furled Bracken insists that even though the noise and disruption had driven all of the possible prey, they simply must avoid the area. Stone Song asks what would happen if the twolegs and monsters never stopped and just continued doing this to every part of the territory. Furled Bracken replies that there was no proof that that would happen.
Lion's Roar is infuriated at the leader's passiveness and decides to take matters into his own paws. If the twolegs were taking over and the monsters were going to eat at their territory, but the group wouldn't leave to find a new home, then that meant that they would need to fight for their territory! Lion's Roar was the biggest cat in the group and one of the best fighters, he would protect his kin, his friends, and his home!
The other cats try to stop Lion's Roar, but the young sharpclaw pushes past them, letting out a fierce yowl as he charges into the clearing. Twolegs turn their heads toward the cat as he faces one of the monsters with giant teeth, its neck stretching up to take a bite out of the rocks above it. The twolegs start shouting as Lion's Roar pounces at the monster's paw and bites it, but reeling back at the acrid taste, as well as from the pain of trying to bite and grip onto the strange, hard material.
The twolegs start running towards the cat, but Lion's Roar has no time to figure out his next move, because as soon as he leaps off of the monster's paw, a shower of dirt and rocks comes crumbling down on him. The cats, and the twolegs, can do nothing but watch in horror.
When the cats return to the rest of the group, shaken and grieving, they tell the rest of the cats what happened, how Lion's Roar tried to fight to reclaim their territory from the monsters and twolegs. That night is when the group of grieving cats cast their stones, voting to leave the lake.

having some Po3 / OotS brainrot
so imagine;
The Three being reincarnations because the original lake cats, the Ancients, didn't leave the lake territories over a vote about twolegs
but because there was something dark and spiteful that lived at the lake
not a creature in itself, but something at the lake boosted dark and spiteful spirits and had a tendency to bring out the worse in the living
and instead of being born at different times, Jay's Wing, Dove's Wing, and Lion's Roar were about the same age [not exact, but Lion's Roar only being a little younger than Jay's Wing and Dove's Wing]
and these three volunteered to try to stop whatever had darkened the heart of the lake [the heart of the lake being metaphoric, not literal] but when that failed, Jay's Wing found himself dying and knew that the cats needed to leave
he didn't know where
but it was better than staying and dying
yet Jay's Wing never got to see where the others ended up
he dies on the journey
but before he passes, he and Dove's Wing and Lion's Roar make a promise
that one day, should it be possible, they would return to the lake with enough power to shake the stars from the sky
and during all this
Jayfeather still sees this all through Jay's Wing
but it's more of a 'I can't control what's going on and I'm just witnessing whatever this body is doing' vaguely horror-ish thing
and all this being related to my other Po3/OotS post-

Ik I've talked about this before but it makes no sense to me that Lion's Roar and Dove's Wing aren't as important as Jay's Wing. Actually you know what it makes no sense that we didn't just get a POV of Jay's Wing instead of Jaypaw just. Time travelling. Imagine if we got just! A random POV from Jay's Wing! And it's kind of confusing at first but slowly it makes sense and Jay's Wing is actually important to the story, it's not just Jaypaw puppeting him. I just want More from the Ancients before Gray Wing and Clear Sky.

And here we are! Took long enough, I really thought this happened much earlier in the arc.
Now the Jay’s Wing subplot is easily my biggest grievance with Po3-OotS as a whole. Not only do we waste a lot of pages for a subplot that adds absolutely nothing to the greater scope story, but the mere fact that the Erins are treating this as yet another excuse to stop writing their own damn character as blind actively hurts their messaging and their story. It’s my firm conviction if they were doing this past life regression plot, Jay’s Wing should’ve been blind and I’ll explain why.
The function of the Jay’s Wing subplot, aside from throwing useless lore at us, seems to be mostly to present Jayfeather with a vision of his ideal life. He has a girlfriend, he can do the job he likes instead of the one he resents, etc. In particular in OotS when we touch on it again, it is presented as a temptation that Jayfeather must reject in order to return fulfill his destiny (even if Rock ultimately yanks him back to the present without really giving him a choice). But think about it, what does it say if in this ideal life he’s sighted? What does it implicitly say about the source of the unhappiness in his life?
If he were blind in this life as well, the main difference accentuated between the past and the present would be much different: the lack of military conflict which permeates Clan life. Repeatedly as I’ve been reading through, I’ve been collecting passages (1, 2,) where Jay, Holly, and Lion demonstrate the territorial and interventionist attitudes of the Clan. Jay in particular showed himself very early on to be quick to advocate for a war of aggression on their neighbors.
Jaypaw getting to experience his ideal life in a less-conflict ridden society may just be the push he needs to begin challenging these ideas. And really that’s ultimately what held him back from becoming a warrior, that difficulty in actually getting involved in the conflict that defines the Clan system. Let’s not forget he’s shown himself a pretty competent hunter, what little training he had considered. Not to mention how it’s explicitly pointed out how because of the tunnel tradition the ancients have more experience teaching even their sighted members how to navigate in darkness.
If he came back from the past life regression flashback with a new appreciation for peace this page waster of a subplot could actually contribute something of value to the arc. Imagine if this experience gave new meaning to his vocation as medicine cat, giving him the drive to search for a way to use his religious authority to reshape the system. Imagine how this would interact with my suggested rework of the Sol plot where they work together for their cult schtick, having Jaypaw join with good intentions but being torn between his pull to do good and Sol’s pull towards abusing this new power. Imagine if this put him at odds with his siblings, the warriors, who through the events of Dark River only grew more entrenched in Clan attitudes.
That’s another important point, I think this plot should replace the Fallen Leaves stuff in Dark River. Jaypaw’s perspective of his own disability shifting as he sees that in a different society he could’ve thrived pairs nicely with the Cinderpaw breaking her leg subplot and the arguments he has with Leafpool about it. In this hypothetical version of events, what would help them navigate the tunnels rather than Fallen Leaves’ ghost, it’d be the lingering memory of the past life regression which would help Jaypaw navigate the tunnels on his own. Thus we preserve the role he has in this book as a supporting character while the main plot keeps the focus on Lionpaw and Hollypaw’s plots about learning Clan loyalty.
In short, while in the canon version it’s a pretty big waste of page count, I think the Jay’s Wing plot could’ve been salvaged. It could’ve really added to the story and the hinted at themes later chucked out the window about the Three being pivotal to destiny and having more agency over it than the average Clan cat. It’s just a shame it was squandered in the hands of the Erins.

Shattered Ice, Night, and Dew from early Riverclan. Then Chasing Clouds and Rising Moon, Half Moon's parents, Broken Shadow and Stone Song, Fallen Leaves's parents, and Rock. Shy Fawn and Dark Whiskers are Lion's Roar's parents, Falling Rain and Falcon Swoop are Jay Wing and Dove Wing's, Whispering Breeze is Falcon Swoop's sister. Furled Bracken was the leader before Half Moon, and Jay Frost is just Jay Frost. Flower Stream was not part of the ancient Tribe, only mentioned in Moth Flight's Vision.

Nothing much to say here, I just wanted to show how Jay's Wing looks compared to Jayfeather, which is basically exactly the same but without the unfocused blind eyes. His scars are the same as his future incarnation for time loop timey wimey reasons and because I said so. :P
