I often take life too seriously. I arrange my life to prioritize comfort and minimize pain. Something magical happens when I welcome sadness, anger, pain, and loss. Befriending what is I find is more productive than pushing it away. What are you not welcoming? I’m attracted to people who know their power. When inspiration hit me to make this portrait of @aiyanaalewis I sensed the power that comes from knowing your value. Can you see it in her eyes? Her hair and jewelry is left unpainted to draw even more attention to the look of her looking at you. Green is the aura color I sense from her. Red. Red was calling me when I caught inspiration from this this black and white portrait of @iammariaborges taken by @ethanjamesgreen . What came out in my painting is a knowing stare that speaks volumes of wisdom. She knows how she sees herself, and how you see her, and how to navigate the gap between what you bring to the image of her. The browns and blues of her skin play agains the red all around and breaking into her body. Those eyes! When I saw this photo of my movement artist Belly (@adambelinda) I knew I needed to paint her. One of the things I appreciate most about her is how solid she is in her role in this world as an artist. It permeates out of her and into those around her. She is both in this outer world we are and in her inner world. We only get to see part of her. One of the things I do really well is knowing when to stop. The part in me that wants to conform to completeness was BEGGING me to fill in all the white parts of the canvas and paint over the drawing. And I knew I couldn't do that. What speaks to me most about @im_vivien_d is the cool hauntingness that comes through in the photographs she makes of herself. Her sharp eyes and knowing smile speak volumes before her lips part. These are the qualities of her that I captured in the portrait I made of her.
