Reading Resolution: “Spaceman of Bohemia” by Jaroslav Kalfař
20. A debut novel: Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař
Tumblr media
List Progress: 5/30
Science fiction can hold up so many metaphors and meanings, and has been used to do so since the very beginnings of the genre. But underneath the layers of larger meaning, the central story should still hold up as a narrative in its own right. The problem with Jaroslav Kalfař’s 2017 debut, Spaceman of Bohemia, is that it has so much to say about the Czech Republic, marriage, and the burdens of legacy that it barely finishes the space travel story that it starts. There are a lot of interesting things to say about emotional abandonment in a marriage, but it’s hard to get too engaged with them when they are taking time away from the cosmic refugee spider alien.
Spaceman of Bohemia follows Jakub Procházka, a Czech astronaut. A cosmic dust cloud, called “Chopra”, has mysteriously appeared near Venus and has resisted all mechanical attempts to study it from Earth. The Czech Republic has stepped into the global spotlight by being the first country to send a human being to study the cloud, and Jakub will leave his wife Lenka for eight months to embark on the solo mission. Jakub was raised by his grandparents, but lives in the shameful shadow of his father, an interrogator/torturer for the Communist Party, and seeks to rehabilitate his family’s name. But he doubts his ability to do that, as well as his sanity, when he meets a spider-like alien aboard the ship, who he names Hanuš. Hanuš is from a distant telepathic race and is on a mission to learn as much as he can about Earth and humans, and he is fortunate to have found a lone human with all the time in the world on his hands.
The space travel in the present alternates with memories from Jakub’s life, but it is clear that Spaceman of Bohemia cares far more about the “Bohemia” part than the “Spaceman” part. Hanuš is telepathic largely to facilitate in-depth flashbacks, and what the reader learns about his species and world is very loose and vague. For all that it is the instigating event, the Chopra cloud ends up playing very little importance in the book as a whole and just serves as a way to get Jakub away from Earth (and it is unclear why the mission needs to be a solo expedition). The journey feels like it could have taken place under the sea, in the center of the planet, or in a magical fairy realm, as long as it separated Jakub from Lenka for a long time and gave him time to reflect on his life. There is nothing necessarily wrong with that, as that is clearly the story that Kalfař is interested in telling, and nothing says that a sci-fi novel has to hew entirely to sci-fi. But Jakub frankly isn’t an interesting enough character to build the majority of the novel around, so when the alien isn’t taking center stage, it feels like a letdown.
This book is sure to find its fans, most likely among lovers of literary fiction rather than sci-fi. But for a book that promises spacemen in the title, the narrative feels far too stuck on Earth.
Would I Recommend It: Not really, no.

Solo qué, podrían no serlo.
Tumblr media
Horriblemente aburrida, buena para una siesta 👎👎👎

Review: Netflix's 'Spaceman' Is A Hearted Attempt On Isolation
Spaceman, starring Adam Sandler, has touched down this past weekend on Netflix, a surreal film adaptation of a novel by Jaroslav Kalfar. Luna has already done an excellent job reviewing Spaceman of Bohemia. As suspected, the movie follows the events closely to those of that book, so if you’re familiar with the story, you’ve got a handy understanding of the plot. [Warning: Full spoilers for…

Netflix's sci-fi drama, Spaceman, takes viewers on a captivating journey with astronaut Jakub (played by Adam Sandler), grappling with isolation and the shattering news of his wife's desire for divorce amidst a solo mission to outer space. The film's most intriguing aspect is undoubtedly Hanuš, a talking spider voiced by Paul Dano. Whether a figment of Jakub's imagination or a genuine extraterrestrial encounter, Hanuš plays a pivotal role in the astronaut's emotional and philosophical transformation. Spaceman, based on Jaroslav Kalfar's 2017 novel "Spaceman of Bohemia," dives into contemplative themes. As Jakub's loneliness intensifies and his relationship with Lenka (Carey Mulligan) crumbles, a friendly arachnid visitor (Hanuš) emerges. This otherworldly companion becomes a beacon of solace, offering him insights into the universe's mysteries and the enigmatic Chopra Cloud. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="2000"] Credit - Netflix[/caption] The film purposefully leaves Hanuš's existence ambiguous. While undeniably wise and even endearing, the question of his reality lingers. The narrative unfolds in a fantastical world, allowing for both interpretations. Hints of Hanuš's tangibility exist – his interaction with physical objects like chocolate frosting and his embrace with Jakub. However, the lack of confirmation from other characters, particularly Peter (Jakub's Earth-bound technician), and the seemingly malfunctioning ship cameras create doubt. The absence of any other witness to the giant, talking spider leans towards Hanuš being a product of Jakub's psyche, a coping mechanism for his solitude and marital woes. Hanuš's backstory adds to the enigma. He claims his home planet fell victim to the Gorompeds, forcing him to flee and explore the universe. Drawn by the vibrations of the ship's broken toilet (a rather humorous detail), he merges with Jakub's spacecraft. His fascination with humanity fuels his desire to understand our emotions – guilt, fear, and hope – experiences we all share. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="2000"] Credit - Netflix[/caption] The name "Hanuš" itself holds significance. Before bestowing it, Jakub reveals the legend of Hanuš, a Czech figure who built a magnificent astronomical clock. Just as the legend's authenticity was questioned, so too was Hanuš's existence. Jakub sees a parallel between himself and the mythical figure, both grappling with the ambiguity of their realities. The Gorompeds, small insect-like aliens, play a crucial role in Hanuš's fate. He reveals these creatures invaded his planet and are now residing within him. Jakub attempts to alleviate his friend's suffering with disinfectant chemicals, offering temporary relief. Ultimately, Hanuš succumbs to the Gorompeds, dissolving into space dust within the Chopra Cloud. While the Gorompeds' motives and timing remain unclear, their actions trigger a profound shift within Jakub. Hanuš's death catalyzes Jakub's growth. Throughout the film, Hanuš emphasizes the universe's inherent order, encouraging acceptance of one's fate. Witnessing Hanuš embrace his end without fear sparks a similar understanding within Jakub. He rediscovers the importance of the things that truly matter – love for Lenka and the value of life. Hanuš's death signifies a new beginning for Jakub, a reflection of the cyclical nature of existence – endings pave the way for new beginnings. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="770"] Credit - Netflix[/caption] Director Johan Renck masterfully crafts a narrative that allows viewers to interpret Hanuš's reality. The film provides evidence for both possibilities, mirroring the "it happens inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?" sentiment from Dumbledore in Harry Potter. Renck acknowledges the potential for Hanuš to be a manifestation of loneliness but ultimately emphasizes the transformative impact he has on Jakub, regardless of his origin. Spaceman's brilliance lies in its exploration of isolation, self-discovery, and the power of human connection, even across the vastness of space. Whether a real alien or a figment of imagination, Hanuš catalyzes Jakub's emotional and philosophical journey. He reminds us of the universe's mysteries, the importance of embracing impermanence, and the enduring power of hope, even in the face of immense isolation. Spaceman Spaceman is a sci-fi drama starring Adam Sandler and directed by Chernobyl director Johan Renck.
