Victoria Monét - On My Mama
Major (and some independent) record labels sign artists based on their (short-lived) viral content. Fame is the game. Gone are the days of artist development, vocal training camps, and media training camps that were invested in artists before the digital age of MySpace, YouTube, and SoundCloud. There's only a handful of current mainstream artists that have the full package because they either came out well before the digital age or they pour into their craft for the love of music and take it serious in the digital age. That IT factor.
Victoria is the definition of a fun, talented, polished singer-songwriter-dancer who's been more than ready. Everything about her is smoove. She has IT. She writes IT. She is IT. I love everything about this new record, the visuals, the easter eggs, and the ode to various aspects of Black Southern culture and artists, especially the sample and feature of Chalie Boy. (When I tell you "I Look Good" is my song.) I cannot wait for Jaguar II. Crazy that'll be her "debut" album. But hey, that's part of her development.
SN: I was an intern at Sony Music (Jive Records) back in the late 2000s to early 2010s before it (and a few other labels) merged into RCA. Battery Records was a small label that was housed in a tiny office (we talking closet size) on the same floor as Jive. I forgot the white dude's name who was running it, but he had that tiny ass office reverberating music through the damn walls. LOUD loud. "I Look Good" was one of those records that was kept in rotation. Everyday in the latter half of '09, I would stroll dance to "my" entrance music out the elevator to the intern's office. Them execs were like "oh here she comes."
