'from you i'd buy anything ' - jack kelly x crutchie morris
Jack Kelly is thinking about leaving. Crutchie is thinking about staying. Neither of them like that very much.
a/n: who was expecting me to briefly come back from exam hiatus with a jackcrutchie drabble? not me for sure
masterlist
Imagine, for a moment, that there is a boy on a fire escape, and he is listening to his best friend talk about leaving, and that boy is you. And your best friend is your best friend. And he matters more than anything.
Imagine that you have lived your entire recorded life in one city in one country in one world selling newspapers. Your birth was announced in a newspaper, probably, a newspaper that was sold by a newsboy quite like you in many ways but vastly different in the ones that matter, and when you die, your obituary will be placed in a newspaper sold by a different newsboy who is, again, both similar and dissimilar to you, a newsboy whose birth announcement you sold in a newspaper. You will sell the paper announcing the death of the boy who sold the news of your birth, and you will sell the paper announcing the birth of the boy who will sell your death. And so the chain goes on. You will sell many papers of many boys, and you will not even know it, or maybe you will. It does not matter if you read the newspaper. It only matters that you sell it.
Imagine that you have been selling newspapers with your best friend. He is your best friend because you sell newspapers with him, or perhaps in spite of it. You love him completely; you adore him like a devotee gazing upon a god. If you were one of the well-suited men writing up the articles that get to be in print, you would put your best friend in the newspaper. Not because he was born or died, but because he lived, and he lived extraordinarily.
Imagine that your best friend is telling you how much he cannot wait to leave this place, the only place that both of you have ever known. He could do it, you know. Leave. He would be good at it like he is good at every other thing except staying. Although you are his best friend, there is nothing you could say to make him stick around, so instead of saying anything, you listen. You do not like what you are hearing, although you pretend otherwise.
Imagine that your best friend could have left town a thousand times before now, but he waited for this early morning, this stolen breath before dawn, so that he could tell you he was going and judge your face to see how you would take the news. Imagine that he has already spent hours and days and weeks coming up with every possible argument you could make to keep him in New York City, Gotham, the City That Never Sleeps, so that you would think him clever, and laugh, maybe, and want him here. Imagine that he does not know that you already think him clever. Imagine that he thinks he has to prove it somehow, as if years of friendship and ill-concealed longing were not enough to cement that belief in your mind already. It is printed on your brain with permanent ink. Like in a newspaper.
Imagine that you are on the fire escape and listening to your best friend talk, and imagining what will happen one day when you wake up and are alone. You have been lonely before, but this would be worse. He would be fine at it, you think, your best friend. He is good at making friends. Even best friends. You think about them now, someone taking your place in sunny Santa Fe, where the city is not gray and lifeless, where the children do not starve in the streets. It does not matter if your replacement is a girl or boy, if Jack Kelly loves them as much as he loves you, they are not you and therefore they are an enemy.
Imagine that your best friend does not want to swap you out for anybody. You are the crucial part in his plans, the piece that completes the puzzle, but he does not know how to say it and you do not know how to say it, either, so it goes unsaid completely. The bell rings and the two of you hurry to the place where they give you the newspapers that you will sell together, and neither of you get rid of the words hanging leaden on the tips of your tongues. Tomorrow, he will repeat this conversation, and it will go the same way. Imagine that you might know what to do tomorrow. You won’t, but there is no loss in trying. Imagine that it might work out in the end. Imagining is easier. It always is.

Spot Conlon
So What? // Ao3: So What?
Summary: Kid Blink is a little twerp, as usual. You chase after him, only to bump into Spot. You two have a moment or two and feelings are revealed.
Jack Kelly
Dealing with Idiots // Ao3: Dealing with Idiots
Summary: Someone got Jack started on his rant again. You try to make cookies, but things don’t go as well as you had hoped. Some shenanigans occur in a... hall closet, don’t ask. Albert sure did learn a lesson, but will he actually learn something from it, probably not.
Davey Jacobs
Nervous // Ao3: Nervous
Summary: Reader and Davey have a crush on each other. Jack is a little shit and tries to set the two of you up... It kind of works (much to your annoyance).

Off-Screen Apologies
Because i saw someone’s reblog saying we missed the opportunity to have a javey apology scene, because Davey deserved to be angry at Jack, and we deserved to see that happen between them, and also because i am possibly working on a little fic about the off-screen interaction.
(I drew just the end snippet of what would be an entire apology with much more lecturing from Davey, just as an excuse to draw boys smooching)

“Jack,” Davey murmurs, close enough that he can feel the whisper of his breath against his cheeks. “Apparently you haven’t noticed, but we’ve been dating for years. Tomorrow is our three-year anniversary.”
Jack, who had been swaying towards the warmth of Davey’s body, towards the promise of a kiss, freezes dead in his tracks. “What?”
But Davey just smiles. “Three years,” he repeats calmly.
“No, no, I heard you the first time, I jus’…” Jack shakes his head, hard, as if that with somehow make any of what’s happening make any kind of sense. “What?”
“When’s the last time you had sex with anyone but me?” Davey prompts—impossibly patient, all things considered. “Or went out on a date? Gave someone your number?”
“Not in fuckin’ ages,” Jack sputters, offended at the very thought. “You an’ me, we’ve got a good thing goin’. I wouldn’t do that to you.”
“You wouldn’t cheat on me?” Davey specifies, tilting his head.
“Course not!”
“Why would it be cheating if we aren’t together?” Davey asks, pointedly.
Jack stares at him, trying to find the riddle hidden in Davey’s question. Because… Because…
“Oh,” he says blankly.
Davey laughs, curling his hands around Jack’s waist. “Oh,” he agrees.
“Three years?” Jack asks weakly.
“Jackie,” Davey sighs, apparently realizing that Jack needs this spelled out to him. “We live together. We share a bedroom. We spent last Christmas at your mom’s house and you introduced me to Charlie’s kids as ‘Uncle David’.”
“Oh,” Jack says again, because it really bears repeating. “How the hell have you managed to put up with my dumbass for three fucking years?”
“It probably helps that I’m madly in love with you,” Davey says, rolling his eyes even as another soft smile curls over his lips.
“Huh,” Jack says. It’s maybe not the best response, but it’s honestly a miracle he manages to say anything at all.
“You’re in love with me too,” Davey helpfully informs him.
“Well, I knew that part,” Jack huffs. Then, “How did you know that?”
“Because I know you,” Davey says, lacing their fingers together. “But feel free to say it aloud any time you like.”
“I love you, too,” Jack murmurs.
Davey’s smile is like the first days of spring: bright like sunshine, full of promise and full of hope.
And the taste of his kiss is even better.

I would love to see more Jack Kelly images and little bulbs, fluff, smut literally anything.
Maybe one where reader and Jack just spent time cuddling in jacks penthouse, trying to hide from the other boys cus they keep tease them.
“they won't find us in here” — jack kelly x reader
Tumblr media
Summary: you and Jack are hiding away in his room, trying to have a little cuddle, which the other boys always like to make the centre of their amusement
Pairing: jack kelly x fem!reader
Word count: 556
Warnings: none, fluff, maybe typos if so sorryyy <3
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The dingy light of the Lodging House barely reached Jack's room, casting a warm, golden glow on the worn-out furniture and scattered newspapers and clothes. You and Jack, seeking a quiet escape from the high energy of the other newsies, found solace in his bedroom. The laughter and banter of the other boys still echoed through the air, but Jack had expertly tucked the two of you away, hidden from their teasing eyes.
As you settled into the cozy space, Jack draped an extra blanket over his bed, creating a makeshift nest. The soft sounds of hushed laughter and the muffled chatter of the boys outside filtered through, creating a comforting background noise.
Jack motioned for you to join him on the bed. “They won't find us in here,” he whispered with a mischievous glint in his eyes. You couldn't help but giggle, realising the absurdity of the situation. "Is this really how much effort it takes, just for us to have some cuddle time?" you teased.
Jack chuckled, a sheepish grin playing on his lips. "I wouldn’t say this is a lot of effort- they're just nosy."
With a playful roll of your eyes, you nestled into the blankets beside him. Jack pulled you into a warm embrace, the scent of newsprint and a hint of cologne enveloping you. The soft touch of Jack's fingers traced patterns on your back, a rhythmic motion that seemed to synchronise with the beat of your hearts. “This is nice,” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. You couldn't help but agree.
As you rested against him, the teasing banter of the boys outside became more audible. The distinctive voices of Race, Albert, and the others echoed in the hallway, their comments gradually becoming more pointed.
“Where's Jack?”
“Probably off being bottle fed!”
“Whispering sweet nothings I bet.”
“Can't believe he turns into a softie around a girl.”
Jack, his brows furrowing, shot you an apologetic look. “Sorry about them. They're relentless.”
You laughed. “Hey, I’m not the one they’re insulting. They just don't get to see this side of you often."
He smiled, the warmth in his eyes deepening. “You're right. It's our little secret.”
Jack's fingers idly played with a strand of your hair, continuing their gentle caress. The quietude of the room invited a sense of relaxation, your words slipped out almost as a murmur.
“You’re so comfy. I could just fall asleep.”
He grinned, pressing a gentle kiss to your forehead. “You can do that, sweetheart.”
With a sigh of contentment, you allowed the gentle embrace of sleep to envelop you, feeling the rise and fall of Jack’s chest as he held you. Jack listened to the fading banter with a mix of amusement and exasperation. As the night unfolded, Jack carefully adjusted the blankets around you, ensuring your comfort. The usual mischievous glint in his eyes instead softened into a tender gaze as he watched you sleep peacefully.
The creak of the door signaled the return of the newsies, their laughter now reduced to tired murmurs. Jack, ever protective, shot a warning glance at the doorway, silently urging them to keep their distance. The boys, catching on to Jack’s mood, exchanged knowing looks and dispersed, respecting the unspoken boundary around Jack’s room. Eventually, he allowed himself to drift off to sleep too.

in case the first one's too weird, perhaps the phrase 'bruised heart', because ive been listening to pink ladies again and have a problem - @pigeonwit
"I guarantee you, you don't want me. You don't."
The words hit Jack like a truck.
When he told himself he was going to finally confess to David today, when he ran through all of the options and avenues for the conversation while on the thirty minute subway ride, he never once considered this option. The option where David thought he wouldn't be good enough, the one where he would say-- that.
Jack's mouth opens and closes for a few moments, the words lodged in his throat, before he chokes out, "What?"
To his credit, David laughs. It's not a happy sound, though- no, it's defeated, and trails off into a sigh at the tail-end of it. As he drops his shoulders, David's gaze flick's to Jack's across the table, before dropping back down to his clasped hands next to his cup of coffee. "You don't want me," David says easily, like it's a fact. Like it doesn't rip Jack in two.
"No, I heard you," Jack says, leaning a little further in, but he makes sure to keep his voice down- he doesn't need the rest of the cafe hearing this. Why he decided to do this in public, he doesn't know anymore, but he felt like he was going to burst out of his skin if he didn't blurt it out. "I just- I don't... get it. What do you mean, I don't want you? I think I know what I want, Dave."
David sighs, shaking his head and giving Jack a desperate, pleading look. "I'm telling you, you don't want-"
"And I'm tellin' you, you don't know what I want or not," Jack cuts in. "And I want you. I want you, and everything you're willin' to give, do you understand?" He stares at David, who is silent, and refuses to meet Jack's eyes.
Jack takes a deep breath and reaches out, gently taking David's hand. David doesn't pull away, but he doesn't grab back. "Look, I... I don't care if you don't want this. That's fine, and we can forget I ever opened my big mouth, okay? But if you- if you're refusin' to give this a shot 'cause you don't think you're good enough... Dave, you can't possibly believe that."
David gulps, his gaze shifting frantically, and he looks like a deer in the headlights. The image makes Jack regret ever saying anything, but when Jack starts to pull his hand away, David stops him with a squeeze. "Do you-" He stops, clearing his throat and staring straight at the wooden table between them. "Do you know how hard it is for... for me to get out of bed every day?"
Jack stays silent. David takes a breath, and closes his eyes.
"It's- It's not that I don't want you, Jackie, 'cause I want you more than you'll ever know," He whispers. "But you... You deserve more than me, okay? You deserve someone who doesn't feel drained every day. Someone who can be... I don't know, happy, without having to try to be. I'm a mess, Jack. You don't want that."
"I don't want that for you," Jack murmurs, squeezing David's hand back. "David, we... we can wait 'til you feel better, or healed, or whatever the fuck it is, but regardless, I don't... I don't need you to change for me to love you, okay? You deserve that, just as you are."
David finally looks up, and gulps hard. "...Love?"
"Yeah. Love," Jack responds.
David's shoulders sink a little, and he nods slowly, his grip on Jack's hand tightening. "I'm broken," David mumbles. "And I-- I know that sounds dramatic, but I've never... I've never been good at this, and you know that. You've been there for all of my breakups."
"Yeah, I have," Jack nods, "and I know that you didn't deserve a damn one of 'em. David, you're a catch, and if people don't get that... That's their problem. Not yours." With a soft sigh, Jack looks down, then shifts in his seat and looks back up at David. "You don't have to make a decision now. We can talk this out when you want, 'kay? The ball's in your court, Dave, but... You ain't broken. I swear."
"Jack..."
"There's a difference between broken and bruised," Jack murmurs. "Okay? You... You might be goin' through a rough patch. You might be hurtin', and that fuckin' sucks, but that don't mean you're beyond repair. You said the same damn thing about me."
David gulps hard, then uses his free hand to rub his eyes. "I... I don't know if I'm ready for-... I'm sorry..."
Jack shakes his head. "You got nothin' to apologize for, okay? If you need to wait, we wait."
"I want to," David explains. "I-... I really, really want to try with you, I just..."
"It's okay," Jack whispers. "I promise."
"Promise," David whispers back.
They finish lunch. They go to the park, then to a bar. They table it for a month and a half before David takes the plunge and kisses Jack. A bruised heart just takes a little time, and Jack Kelly would wait an eternity and a half for David Jacobs.

hi! idk if you still do newsies requests, and if not thats ok, but if so do you think you could write one with a fem reader with either jack, race, or davey as the love interest? im a sucker for the stories where the boy accidentally says something that could be perceived as hurtful and the reader takes out of context and the love interest has to make it up to her and comfort her. if you decide to do this i’ll give you the freedom to go wherever you want to with this and i get it if you don’t want to :)
no pls i always do newsies reqs. anything for my boys.

Thinking about this moment, you realize that this might be the happiest you’ve ever been in your life. It’s hard to appreciate life while you’re still living it, like rose-tinted glasses only exist when you’ve started missing what you should have loved while you were going through it, but right now, you’re beating the odds. This is good, and you still have it to treasure in the palm of your hand.
Still, even the knowledge that what you have is good still stings, in a way. You’re catching at the golden grains of sand even as they fall down the hourglass. You can stretch these blessed few hours out for as long as you can, but eventually, they’ll end. Some part of you wants to play God until the end of time, to reach out and tie everything down, but everyone leaves eventually.
As of right now, though, this doesn’t include the boy next to you. Jack Kelly is special, the kind of boy who only appears once in a person’s life, blooming as bright as a forest fire before he disappears without a trace. Right now, he’s yours for the taking, but he could be gone as soon as tomorrow.
The two of you are curled into a fire escape landing really only meant for one person, a hazy tangle of stretched limbs and worn clothes. Tomorrow, your legs will cramp up from the knot they’re in, but you can pretend you don’t notice it now. You and Jack have been watching the sun cross the horizon, reveling in the glory of not having to work at the moment.
You cast a quick glance his way, letting your gaze rove over his messy head of dark curls. They pour like water over his eyes, shading out his normally bright stare. It must be the artist in him, but you swear that he always seems hyper aware of just about everything, like he could find you in a crowd of millions or spot the one person who needs him the most. At the moment, it’s you, but again, your best strokes of luck could change in a moment.
Truth be told, you’re afraid for when this will end. Jack has been your closest friend for a long time now, although you developed feelings for him a while back. He’ll never feel the same way, obviously, because one cost of knowing all of Jack’s secrets backwards and forwards is that you’ve had plenty of time to hear about all the times he couldn’t care less about the various girls who make Manhattan their home. Jack could have a supermodel asking for a date, and he wouldn’t give her a second of his attention if he didn’t feel like it.
That should mean that days like this, when you’re able to share his afternoons, should mean more than usual, but even being the brightest star in his line of sight still isn’t enough for you. You don’t just want his attention as a friend, you want his love. You want your fingers curled around his heart, you want to know that he is yours, now and forever.
The only problem is that Jack refuses to let himself be tied down. He’s restless, constantly searching for a way to get out, out of the streets, sometimes even out of the city. You’re certainly grateful that he’s here, but you’ve heard the way he talks about Santa Fe like it’s the greatest dream to ever bless his head. Someday, even you won’t be enough to stop him from going, and you’ll have to live with that absence for the rest of your days.
For this afternoon, for this month, for even this year, though, he is here with you, and that means everything. For a few blessed moments, you can convince yourself that this is going to last forever, and that’s enough for you.
Jack looks at you now, the corners of his lips tugging up in something like self-consciousness. He’s usually confident, the boy who could be yours, always walking around the other newsies like he’s never doubted himself for a second. You’ve been able to learn the difference over the course of the past couple months. Witnessing the moment his facade breaks down is stunning, and the first time you saw it you didn’t know what to do with yourself.
By now, you’ve learned that the difference in him is normal, that he likes to pretend he’s something more just to make sure none of the other boys have to worry about themselves half as much as he does. You’re not sure why Jack thinks it’s okay to let down his guard around you, only that you’re glad to see it, and not just because it gives you a false hope that he could feel the same way about you as you do about him.
Jack rubs the back of his head, further mussing up his hair. “What?”
You repeat the question right back at him. “What?”
Jack makes a face. “You were looking at me. Do I have something on my face?”
The way he says it, so full of fear that you’d think he was worried about a deadly serpent instead of a smudge of dirt, makes you laugh. “No, you’re fine. Besides, you’ve literally never worried about that before.”
Jack rolls his eyes. “Well, excuse me for wanting to look my best. Some of us have standards.”
You arch a brow. “Does that mean I don’t?”
Jack gestures at the haphazard mess of limbs, the aftereffects of both of you trying to cram yourselves into this narrow fire escape. “It’s incredibly improper for you to be up here with a boy, you know. Who knows what could happen?”
You narrow your eyes at him. “I live in a house with thirty other boys. Also, we’ve been cloudwatching. The only thing that’s happened is that you’ve come close to falling asleep four times now.”
Jack frowns. “That’s so wrong. Maybe two times at most. I am very invested in these clouds.”
You chuckle. “Of course, I should have known.”
Jack’s eyes flash to you again, lingering on the tilt of your chin as you laugh. You wonder if he’s mapping you out in his head, tracing where he’d draw the shadows on your face. Regardless, it takes him quite a long time to manage to drag his eyes away once more.
“Listen, Y/N, I was thinking–”
Whatever Jack was thinking, he’s cut off by the sound of someone shouting his name from inside the Lodging House. He makes a face, and you swear you can watch his usual confident exterior wrap back around him like a shell, protecting him from having to take a single thing seriously again. Jack tries to ignore the summons in the hopes that the caller will go away, but when his name is yelled again, he groans and starts to stand up.
“One of the boys probably twisted an ankle again, I bet. Either that or Race dropped his box of cigars between the wall and his bed and thinks someone stole it. I’ll be back soon.”
You nod, and watch as Jack grabs his cap from where it’s long since fallen from his head. He disappears back inside, then pops back out again just as quickly, looking oddly panicked.
“You’ll wait for me, right? I swear, I’ll wrap this up as soon as I can, but I really need to talk to you. You’re going to be here when I come back?”
You give him your best attempt at a reassuring grin. “This is the only place in the entire Lodging House where I can actually be alone for once. Trust me, I’ll be right here.”
Jack grins, clearly relieved. “Ok, great.”
He heads back inside, and you’re left wondering what Jack could possibly have to say that would be so important he’d have to check and make sure you’d still be here. Usually, he seems to take your presence for granted, but not today. Interesting.
You’re a little too curious for your own good, so after a couple of minutes pass and Jack isn’t back yet, you decide to creep inside the Lodging House and see if you can find out what was so important that he’d have to dash away for a while in the midst of his seemingly crucial conversation.
You climb back through the window, and after padding down the hallway for a few meters, hear the sound of voices coming from a nearby room. You know that eavesdropping is rude, but you hear your name tossed back and forth between the few assembled newsies, and you know you have to listen.
Albert is talking to Jack, you think, with maybe Jojo and Race there too. “Hey, we’se not saying anything. We just want to know what’s going on.”
Jack sounds frustrated. “Nothing, alright? Nothing’s going on. We’se just talking.”
Jojo interrupts. “Oh, ‘cause that’s totally true. You’ve been out there with her for hours. That’s not nothing.”
You have a feeling they’re talking about you, the afternoon spent out on the fire escape. Some part of you wants to know Jack’s take on the matter, so you lean closer. He doesn’t disappoint, either, and speaks up soon enough.
“Like I said, it’s nothing. Y/N’s just a friend, if that. Stop trying to look into things if there’s nothing there.”
You feel your stomach drop as he says it. Thankfully, Race seems to want clarification, which saves you from the trouble of having to burst in there yourself.
“What do you mean, ‘if that?’ Why would you guys be anything other than friends? Unless, uh–”
Jack cuts him off hurriedly. “Nothing like that, Racer. Get your head out of the gutter, kid. All I mean is that, well, it’s like we talked about the other day, right? Sometimes people have different expectations for what they mean to somebody, and sometimes they’re wrong. It’s like that.”
All of a sudden, you think you’ve heard enough. Not only does Jack know how you feel, he doesn’t feel remotely the same way. You feel sick to your stomach. How could you have thought that he’d even want to love you, he scarcely even thinks of you as a friend?
You slip back down the hall, but this time, you don’t return to the fire escape. Let Jack head back there, feeling all victorious for tricking you yet again. You hope he happens upon that empty space of iron railings, you hope the pleasure gushes from him and leaves him feeling half as useless as you do. You don’t want to see him anymore, and you certainly don’t want any more of his conversation. Jack can keep his secrets, and you’ll keep the last of your pride. He can’t have any more of it.
In the end, you don’t know how Jack reacts. You do your best to avoid him, which is fairly easy with the number of newsies crammed into the Lodging House growing by the day. You can eat your meals at different times, sell your papes in different places with different partners, and stop seeking him out as you once did. All the while, you nurse your broken heart like a shattered bone, and no matter how few times you see Jack’s face, the hurt of it all still threatens to kill.
It won’t last forever, but you still weave this protective shroud of solitude about your shoulders, pretending it brings you warmth so you can at least feel something other than devastating chill. You can’t believe Jack would say such a thing, which makes it all the worse. It seems as if both of you have been recently disappointed by the other.
Despite this, Jack takes it upon himself to track you down after a week and a half of your supposed exile. You thought you were doing a good job of losing him, and then you round a street corner only to see him bearing down on you. You try to double back and lose him, but it’s too late by now. He’s seen you.
Jack jogs up to you, slinging an arm around your shoulders partially as a friendly gesture and also to make sure that you can’t run anymore. “There you are, Y/N. It’s funny, I almost thought you were avoiding me.”
He casts you a sharp look as he says this, daring you to confirm his suspicions. You just shrug.
“It’s a big city, Jack. It’s not impossible to go a day or two without seeing you.”
A furrow deepens in Jack’s brow. “See, that’s what I thought at first, but it’s been a week. Big city or no, I would have run into you at some point before today.”
When you refuse to elaborate further, he sighs. “Look, I just want to know what’s wrong. When I came back to that fire escape and found you missing, I assumed the worst. Can you at least tell me what’s going on?”
You waver, but cave under the force of Jack’s beseeching stare. You’ve never been able to hide anything from your friend, apparently not even your feelings for him.
“I was going to wait on the fire escape, but I went inside briefly. I came in just in time to hear you talking about how I didn’t mean as much to you as some of the boys thought.”
A dawning look of horror is growing on Jack’s face. Rather than bear witness to it any longer, you shake loose his arm and take a few quick steps away.
Jack shakes his head hurriedly. “That’s not what it was like at all, I swear. I would never say something like that.”
You fold your arms across your chest, doubtful. “Then what was it like?”
Jack rakes a hand through his hair. “The boys were confronting me about you again. They have all these crazy ideas about how I feel about you, and I didn’t want them spreading rumors that weren’t true, so I tried to shut them down. Looks like I was a little more overbearing than I needed, huh?”
Jack tries for a weak laugh, but you don’t join in. Instead, you’re just disappointed. Sure, at least you know that Jack doesn’t hate you, but you’re just back to square one of him not loving you.
“Why did the boys want to confront you about me? Has this happened before?”
Jack looks oddly nervous. “What? Oh, uh, no. Never. Why do you ask?”
This makes you more curious. “You said they were confronting you again. Like they’d talked to you about me before. Why?”
Now it’s Jack’s turn to quail beneath your inquisitive gaze, and like you, he’s unable to withhold the details.
“They think I like you,” he mutters under his breath, “they have for a while. Not sure why, of course, but—”
A slow smile is growing on your face. “And do you? Like me, that is.”
Jack looks away frantically, but no rescue is in sight. At last, he sighs, and nods slowly. “Yeah, I do. And you’d better not say a word to the other boys, because they’ll never let it go.”
You laugh. “Why would I say a thing to the other boys? Unless we wanted to, of course.”
Jack squints at you. “Wait, ‘we?’ Does that mean that you like me too?”
“Of course I do,” you say, “Have for a while, actually. That’s why I thought you were having that conversation in the first place, because you had to convince the boys that even if I was crushing on you, you didn’t feel the same.”
Jack stares at you for a moment, as if processing the whole conversation. All of a sudden, his face splits with a breathtaking grin. “Shoot, you like me. We should have talked about this earlier.”
You arch a brow. “Why, what would you have done differently?”
Jack looks oddly proud of himself, and seconds later, you figure out why. “This.”
When he kisses you, it feels perfect. Not too rushed or too slow, just the perfect conclusion, the one the two of you have been rushing towards perhaps since the moment you met. It is you and Jack until forever, and you couldn’t ask for anything else.

Fluff 21 - "Wh- so you did remember my birthday!" || "Of course I did. How could I ever forget?"
Tumblr media
If you were to ask Crutchie, he would say that Jack was moping.
A claim that Jack himself would vehemently deny. Jack Kelly did not mope, though that didn't mean that he didn't occasionally feel a tad bit disappointed. Especially when his girlfriend avoided him at every turn and gave absolutely zero inclination that she knew his birthday had been coming up.
And, yes, perhaps that mild upset was showing through Jack isolating himself on the roof of the lodging house with only his sketchbook for company. If you were to ask Jack, that was the ideal way for anyone to spend their birthday.
So no, of course he was not moping, no matter what Crutchie and Race and whoever else had to say about it.
"Jackie? You up here? The guys said they saw you head up here."
Jack tensed up at the familiar voice floating up to where he sat sketching from his penthouse.
"Oh so you actually want to talk to me now?" Jack bit out before he could think better of it.
Okay, so maybe Jack was a little more upset than he wanted to let on.
"Jackie?"
He let out a long sigh, snapping his sketchbook shut and turning around to face his girlfriend.
Y/N stood at the edge of the penthouse, her arms behind her back. There was a nervous smile on her face, and she was bouncing up and down a little on her heels. Her clothes were surprisingly clean considering that Jack knew she had been working far harder than usual lately.
"Yeah?"
"I have something for you," she said, smile widening.
Jack raised a single eyebrow at her, refusing to let her words raise his hopes.
Y/N crossed over to him, moving her hands to her front to present him with two small parcels and a piece of card.
"It's not much - but happy birthday, Jackie."
Jack blinked at her, staring between his girlfriend and the gifts she was presenting him with.
"Wh- so you did remember my birthday?" Jack asked in mild disbelief. Y/N let out a quiet laugh, biting her lip as she nodded.
"Of course I did. How could I ever forget?" Y/N asked, her voice soft.
"But you've been avoiding me."
"I wanted it to be a surprise. And I've been taking a couple of extra jobs to try and save up for what I wanted to get for you."
"You didn't have to do that!" Jack hadn't realised he had stood up until he had already crossed over to her. He clasped his hands ever-so gently on her arms.
"Of course I did - I love you, Jackie! Happy birthday!"
Jack learned and pecked her cheek before accepting the objects in her arms. He couldn't help but laugh at the card - two crudely drawn figures on the front holding what Jack presumed were meant to be newspapers.
"Yeah, okay - we can't all be artistic geniuses, Kelly," Y/N huffed, pouting.
"It's beautiful. I'll treasure it forever, baby," Jack promised, swallowing back any further laughter that threatened to bubble up.
True to his word, he strode over to where he had tacked up several of his own drawings to the railings, adding the birthday card to the mix.
"Crutchie is going to think your artistic talent took a serious hit," Y/N snorted, and Jack turned around just in time to see her flop down onto the piles of old clothes and blankets which served as Jack's bed.
Jack just grinned at her, joining her on the bed and carefully peeling away the newspaper which wrapped the two parcels.
A single cupcake was revealed in the first box and Jack's mouth watered at just the sight of it.
"This must've cost a fortune,"
"You deserve a birthday cake, Jackie - not every day you turn 18," Y/N murmured, grabbing hold of his hand and giving it a quick squeeze.
"I love you," he said, tightening his hold on her when she tried to pull away and instead tugging her closer to peck her lips.
"Yeah, yeah," Y/N waved it off. "Open the other one. That's the real present."
"The real present?" Jack repeated incredulously. Y/N just nodded eagerly, eyes fixed on the scruffy parcel. Jack picked it apart carefully, his eyes widening as he revealed a brand new set of paints for him to use. "How the fuck did you buy these?" He whispered.
"I told you - I've been taking a lot of extra work," Y/N shrugged bashfully.
Jack didn't think twice before lunging towards her to pull her into a long, deep kiss.

personally. and this might just be me. but personally. i think that Jack and Race could both have saved enough to move on if they wanted. i think you see it in the things they have: how Jack always has art supplies just a little bit nicer than he'd be able to steal with worrying about being caught. how Race lets himself take pride in his appearance, his vest matching his pants and his pocket square always net and clean.
i think the real thing that stops them from going anywhere is loyalty and trust and the bond that comes with growing up like this. there are always older kids who can spare a nickel for dinner when a little kid has a bad day selling. there are always older kids around to patch up a skinned knee and the torn pants that come with it. there are always older kids around to promise that things will getter better, get easier, turn into something they can handle. Jack and Race both relied on those older kids when they were little, and they know there are little kids who are relying on them. and it's barely even a question, you know?
sure, they could save that quarter for themselves, or they could quietly pay Kloppmann with it to make sure everyone gets inside when it's supposed to snow. they could put those last few pennies away, or they could buy enough food to split with the kids who had a bad day. they could be saving to chase their dreams, or they could go to the doctor and get something for the ten-year-old who hasn't been able to stop coughing for two months and still needs to be out in the cold selling if he wants to survive.
and i think. personally. both Jack and Race talk a big game about it all, love to be blowhards and braggarts and act like one day, just you see, we'll leave all of you behind and find something better. but really. honestly. they and everyone know that there's something to these relationships that makes leaving a lot harder than saving money. so instead they show it in their little ways. Race is a smooth-talking gambler who could win a hand of poker against a politician and talk somebody into spending their last penny on yesterday's news, but he's also been one of these kids since he was young and scrawny and fighting to survive. how could he abandon them when they never abandoned him? and Jack is a charmer who knows just how to push the right buttons, just how to flirt and just how to make up a convincing headline, but he's been one of these kids since he lost everything and didn't know how to keep his head above water. how could he let them down when they're the only people who have never, ever let him down?
and that's why, personally. I think Jack and Race are still here because they care, not because they have to be.

Y'know that line in Watch What Happens (Reprise) when Jack goes "Here's what I think, Joe's a jerk, he's a rattlesnake." ?
I propose that when he says that, he pulls David in close by the vest (or if he's wearing a tie), like an inch away from his face, to try get him to pay attention to what he's saying.
It'd also be kinda gay, reminiscent to that scene in 92sies.
