XIV likes to come up with new lore all the time, whether that be races, classes, zones, etc. Has there ever been a time where this lore has fundamentally changed your character; e.g. you might have started out as a Miqo'te and swapped when Au Ra came out?

I don't know if I'd consider it a major character change but Endwalker finally let me start RPing Lyneth as a proper bard rather than a bog standard archer supplementing her lack of aetherial control with explosives. The introduction of dynamis as a concept gave me something I could point to as a source for inspiring song in a character I'd long ago head-canoned as having very limited ability to manipulate aether. Even so, her current use is very limited as she has to prime her targets first, catching them in moments of intense focus and determination and adding the tune she intends to use as a background hum to start making the association between the song and the feeling in their minds. Her bardsong only currently works on her nearest and dearest but she's getting better at it all the time.

Which OCs that are not yours do you most admire? What is it about that character that you find impressive or engaging?

Man. I was almost hoping I wouldn't get asked this one. Not because I don't have an answer to it, but because I have waaaay too many. I'll go with three this time around.

So, in no particular order:

J'lyneth Khal - @newhorizonsxiv - To start with, the drabbles and bits of fic written for this character are absolutely stunning! You can really feel the character come to life in the words. I'm lucky to have read about and interacted with Lyneth. She's got this can-do sort of attitude that is infectious. Truly wonderful Akhutai Urit - @scales-claws-and-thorns - I don't think anyone is shocked that Tai is on this list. It's hard to choose just one thing that I find impressive about Tai, but I'll just choose one. The player does such a good job with portraying the different sides of Tai. He's cold and distant in public, not wanting to get close to people, perhaps even afraid to, but when he does he becomes protective, romantic, and downright sweet. He's got a gooey center under that hard outer shell!

Sasari Sari - @steelcarbuncle - I cannot say enough good things about Sari. She is sooo good at driving other characters towards their own personal goals or setting them on paths to new ones. There is a reason she becomes a mother figure so easily. And not only does the character invest her heart and soul in the people around her, the plays invests in both solo stories and collaborative ones in ways that are truly amazing. My characters would not be half of what they are without Sari and her player.

There are so many other characters I'd like to include here. And just because your character isn't here doesn't mean that I do think they are great! I love nothing more than digging into fics and seeing new screenshots! You're all doing an amazing job!

A tribal Seeker who left her tribe to find her own way. She has bounced between jobs, serving at one time or another as a courier for a pirate crew, a hostess at a tea house, and an investigator specializing in magical mysteries. Currently she is one half of Eorzea’s Worst Adventuring Duo.

For lyneth, if you'd still like 'anon' questions: what would you do if you couldn't adventure any more?

"Actually have given this one some thought. Talked it over a bit with my partner and we decided we'd probably pick out a patch of wilderness somewhere and build a little house. Piers'd work the land, maybe have some animals to tend, and I'd write. Tell the stories of our adventures, put all those stories I tell the cubs down into a proper book with some illustrations alongside. Tai could stay whenever he liked, between jobs. Can't see him ever retiring from the life to be honest and if Piers ever found someone he liked enough to marry there'd be plenty of space on our little patch to put up a second house for me to move myself into to give them privacy and space for all those kids I'm sure he eventually wants. That's the plan, such as it is."

If someone wrote a book about you, what would it be called? (Lyneth)

((OOC I really want to go with the easy joke and say The Cat in the Hat. I'm not going to do that but just know that it took a herculean act of will for me not to do that. ))

"Hmmm... there are so many good options. Seeker of Adventure? A Thousand and One Unlikely Tales? Oooh! You could do a pun on tales like.. A Tale of Two Tails or Tales of Tails Entwined if this was going to be a book about my various romantic misadventures not that I think most of those are interesting enough to other people that they'd want to read them. Would take significant embellishment to get to bodice ripping excitement. Maybe those early days in Limsa would make for good farce though, people could laugh at how little I knew about anything at all. Seeker Seeking Employment? Nah.. too trite."

And off she wanders, muttering bad puns to herself as she goes.

What does Lyneth consider the biggest mistake that she's ever made?

This one I am going to answer out of character as Lyneth would never really tell this story in character for fear of Piers ever finding out it happened but uh.. she staged a prison break in Gridania.

The prisoners she was trying to break out were a clan of poachers that she and Piers actually helped put into prison in the first place, she just felt guilty enough about it after the fact that she staged this big elaborate plan to try and get them back out again, brought Xehn'a in on this with her, snuck into the prison disguised as a priest come to pray with the condemned and Xehn'a pretending to be her Woodwailer escort. Talked their way past the guards to get in but getting the prisoners back out without a massive fight was going to need a clever plan and she really thought she had one.

She'd rigged some Garlean made explosives in strategic spots just outside the prison walls. She had a device to trigger them that she used once they'd found their desired escapees and planned to slip out with minimal fighting once most of the guards were distracted investigating the explosions. And this really would have been a very good plan if she'd done it anywhere that wasn't The Black Shroud.

But because it was the Black Shroud that series of explosions caused a huge uproar and some really nasty Greenwrath and got a lot of people needlessly hurt or killed by angry trees and wrathful nature spirits and while the prison break was successful she still regrets the whole incident to this day and really really never wants Piers to find out that it happened because she's not sure he'd ever be able to forgive her for it.

What, specifically, was the catalyst for their physical attraction (if applicable) to the other character? In other words, what in particular had them like “Oh, they’re…hot…”

There is a very distinct pinkness to Lyneth's cheeks and she is clearly having trouble meeting your gaze. "Well.. uh.. ahem.. my attraction to Tai clearly isn't based on his looks alone. Not that I don't find him.. I mean he definitely is.. uh.. but he doesn't really look anything like how he looked when we first.. I mean.. he's changed. Considerably. Since..

Anyway it was his hair. The first moment I ever really wanted to touch him in more than a friendly sort of way. His hair had fallen a bit in his face and I just really wanted to push it back, to run my fingers through it.. that sort of thing. I didn't. Not then. But I wanted to."

Couples character development question: what was the moment that first made their ~heart~ Soft for the other person? Not necessarily a conscious realization of “I love this person,” but a moment that had them like “Oh…I adore them…”

Lyneth's face takes on a fond and wistful little smile. "Was there one love in particular you wished to hear the first stirrings of? I've had a fair few now. The very first one.. that's hard to pin to an exact moment. We were both so young when the tribe paired us as partners and after that we spent every moment together. It was fall in love or kill each other, really. But I think probably.. probably it was his laugh. Such a serious boy, Shihan, but I always found my ways to coax a smile or even a laugh out of him. Only ever on our own though, never in front of others. Can't have that. And so.. they were mine, in a way, his smile, his laugh, just for me. How could you not love something so rare and precious and saved for you alone?

Second partner, after I left home, well that was Piers and I do still love him, in a thousand little ways even if none of them are romantic these days. That one I can tell you exact. I had a bee on my shirt. And he was trying to swat it away and I didn't want to get stung and was trying to fight him off from his swatting and we ended up almost tumbling over the edge of a cliff in the tussle and there we both were, adrenaline surging, sat on our respective rumps, dusty and sweaty and furious with each other and I remember thinking, 'If I didn't love you so much I'd probably kill you.' Still think that about Piers about a dozen times a day when we're out on a job, even now.

And then came Xehn'a.. ah.. Xehn'a. That one I can remember pretty vividly too. Second date. He takes me out into the jungles of Vylbrand. We were pirates that day, or at least I was, and we were hunting buried treasure, you see. But to get to it, well we have to jump from the top of this waterfall into a deep lake below. And I'm all set to go without needing any goading, this is a thing I do for fun with or without the promise of pirate's gold, but Xehn'a pulls me back and he says, 'You may steal my heart. You may steal my breath.. And at times? You may even steal my words. But you will never, ever steal my glory.' And over he went, ahead of me. And that was it. That was the moment I knew. Way with words, that one. Always.

Which is what got me with Tai as well. We'd seen each other in passing a few times, both working at the same place, we'd passed a bit of odd banter back and forth but then Xehn'a, impetuous butterfly that he is, flitted away on a whim when I'd planned to have him meet one of my siblings and Tai just happened to be passing by at that moment so he got roped in to our table for three and we had our first chance to really talk and well.. sometimes it just goes that way with someone. Something just clicks. Words come easy. And you're having fun swatting them back and forth, making a sport of it. I knew in that first conversation that wherever my life went from that moment on, I wanted him in it. Just didn't know yet exactly how entwined those lives would become. Not that I'm complaining on that score. Never would."

How comfortable are they talking about, and openly communicating during, sex?

For Lyneth, the short answer is not at all. This is a cultural hangup. She's very uncomfortable with pda for much the same reason. It Just Isn't Done. You don't flaunt your time with the Nunh. You don't talk about it. You don't invite comparisons. This only causes discord in the tribe. She has slowly been shedding her discomfort with these things since leaving behind those tribal traditions but it's been a lengthy process.

As for communicating during sex? Well.. she's probably lucky that her first sexual partner was Xehn'a who takes roleplay to extremes in and out of the bedroom. Learning, exploring and especially communicating around sex is a much easier thing for her when she can pretend it isn't her doing it. It's the fearsome pirate captain or the fierce huntress or the imperious noblewoman she's pretending to be for that evening's adventure.
