I'd be shocked if we find out J wasn't in love with MC.

I've just played through their route and it's surprising how much heartache I feel seeing them and my MC interact. If I had to guess at how J was feeling before MC left then it would be something like this:

"You could've been everything to me, but we never got the chance to try."

And now MC is back in their life and J's so... guarded. There is weariness there, and despite their best efforts the armour cracks and they show a tentative softness beneath it.

It definitely hurt to find out they sent letters only for my MC to never receive them. That has to be one of, if not THE, reasons why J interacts with them the way they do now.

But MC is back. Now there's a chance for that everything. You know, once barriers are dealt with.

This is heart-achingly perfect, Anon! 🥺

It deserves to stand on its own, possibly to cause some bittersweet emotions for J-mancers/JR-mancers or even readers who befriend them, because ouch. J's attachment to the past is something that will be explored more deeply in Book Two. It's amazing to hear that you sensed this from them while playing their route; they do have a softness for the MC that's a vestige from their childhood, but it runs very, very deep. They're 'the Detective' now, but the MC erodes that...

J having such a soft heart has required them to guard it as certain events/traumas stack up that make guarding it seem safer, if not necessary. Only a few people will ever have a hope at lowering those walls. The MC will always be one of them; they reached out to J once.

One thing that surprised Alex when they came back to Fernweh was how comforting Reese was in a way.

With Jane, there was a certain awkwardness in their relationship due to uncertainty. Like how do you interact with someone who is so, SO familiar and knew you better than anyone else but now is also completely different because you two were apart for almost a decade?

And Silas for all his politeness and kindness CAN be hard to read if you don't know where to look, especially since they weren't super close as children anyways.

But Reese? God it was so easy to fall back into their old dynamic. The banter, the competitiveness, Alex never thought it would be VERNER of all people that would make this trip back home less awful
