1905
Isador and Rose celebrated their birthdays together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chana baked a cake, and the Scarfos were invited over to enjoy the celebration. It was cramped in their tiny tenement kitchen, but Isador was just happy that his best friend had been invited to the party.
Tumblr media
Alonso’s mother had recently remarried, and Alonso didn’t like his new stepfather at all. He wanted to spend as much time out of the house as possible, and usually, that meant spending it with Isador. This suited Isador just fine--the older he got, the less he enjoyed being crammed into one room with his brother and sisters.
Tumblr media
Eventually, the party wound down, and Chana agreed to put all the children to bed. Alonso’s mother, meanwhile, confessed that she had her own reasons for coming over.

Petal
BY JORDAN MAINZER
A couple Tomorrow Never Knows gems and an annual treasure.
Petal & Bernice, Schubas
Petal’s Magic Gone was one of our favorite albums of last year; contributor Lauren Lederman wrote that it “documents a moment for Kiley Lotz...where coming to terms with her own queerness and mental health comes to a head.” Expect to hear lots of the latest record tonight at Schubas.
Toronto whimsical indie pop band Bernice will play songs from last year’s inventive Puff: In the Air Without a Shape. The band, led by singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist Robin Dann, takes equal influence from soundscapes and  R&B and quiet storm to make for a wonderfully percussive and soulful take on a genre that too often suffers from preciousness sans feeling.
Seattle grunge pop band Great Grandpa and Sir Babygirl (the queer pop project of Brooklyn-via-New Hampshire artist Kelsie Hogue) open.
Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, Lincoln Hall
When we interviewed Sarah Shook last year after seeing her perform a stripped down acoustic set at Bloodshot Records, she said that her band “amplifies all the emotions and really draws out the spirit of the thing.” So it sounds like seeing her with the proper Disarmers is the way to go. Shook also mentioned to us that she has plenty of new songs (she played a new one at Bloodshot), though it remains to be seen whether she’ll perform any of them in her headlining slot tonight. The band is likely to play one or both of the two new songs they released towards the end of last year, the quintessentially high and lonesome “The Way She Looked At You” and the honky tonk “Devil May Care”.
Mount Moriah frontwoman H.C. McEntire and Half Gringa, the moniker of songwriter Izzy Olive, open.
Tedeschi Trucks Band, Chicago Theatre
Tedeschi Trucks Band return for their annual residency at Chicago Theatre starting tonight (they’re also playing tomorrow and next Friday and Saturday nights). They’re releasing a new record, Signs, next month. Instrumentally, the record is definitely a band showcase, as on the horn-laden funk of “Walk Through This Life”, blues guitar jam “Still Your Mind”, and uptempo country bop “Hard Case”. But the songwriting and lyricism and soul of the record is really thanks to Susan Tedeschi. She sings about overcoming on “I’m Gonna Be There?” and offers an inspiring ode to life on “Strengthen What Remains”. “Shame” is a gripping, gospel-influenced lament of our current state of political affairs. And “The Ending”, perhaps the record’s best song, was written in tribute to many of the band’s friends who passed away during the recording of Signs, including Butch Trucks, Gregg Allman, Leon Russell, and B.B. King. But it’s Colonel Bruce Hampton to whose final moments Tedeschi pays tribute, all over acoustic blues picking. It’s a moving end to an emotional album, of which the band should play at least a few songs tonight.

At least, Papa said, it was one of the new law tenements. Those had windows and fire escapes, not like the old ones.
At least, Mama said, there were other children to play with. Three of them right down the hall, even. And they had a boy just Isador’s age.
Tumblr media
Isador wasn’t sure how he was supposed to make friends with the Alonso and Enrico Scarfo, who only spoke Italian.
Tumblr media
Alonso didn’t share his concerns.

MY BEST FRIEND
BY IZZY LEDERMAN AGE 7
Tumblr media
My best friend in the world is Al Scarfo.
Tumblr media
There are 3 three reasons Al is my best friend. 1. Firstly, he is smart 2. Second, he is brave 3. Third, he is kind.
Al is smart because for example he learns Inglish English faster than me and he is good also with also does well in math. He helps me with my home work homework. Mrs. Stacy gived gave him the best mathmatishan mathematician award 2 two times.
Tumblr media
2. Al is brave because for example when we got lost in the park he didnt didn’t panic. I was pretty scared but Al said to pretend we were eksplorers explorers and we found our way back to the path. When we were pretending it wasnt wasn’t so bad.
Tumblr media
Al also is kind because for example when I talk to him about my sister Rose who passed he dosent doesn’t make fun of me for crying.
Tumblr media
He says he understands because his dad passed to too. And he is still sad about it. Sometimes we are sad together.
Tumblr media
Restating my introduction You do not need to say this. all of this makes Al a good friend.

Please see corrections.
You are improving. -Mrs. Poole)

TW: Child death
When she was twenty months old, Rose started coughing and didn’t stop. The doctor said it was tuberculosis, and that they should have called him sooner. Rose passed away later that night.
Tumblr media
After Rose’s death, Chana sank into a deep depression. She spent most of her days in bed.
Tumblr media
While Papa was at work, Izzy tried his best to keep the house clean and entertain his younger siblings. He took them to the park, so that they didn’t have to stay in the dark little apartment where Rose had died. As long as he was teaching Sol letters on his blocks or making sure that Pearl didn’t fall into the duck pond, he didn’t have to think about Rose at all.

1905
As soon as Isador turned five, his parents enrolled him in school. He was happy to be in the same class as Alonso, and the girl who sat on his other side, Hannah, was nice too.
Tumblr media
School was confusing--the teacher spoke quickly in a language most of her students didn’t understand. Everyone called Isador “Izzy” and Alonso “Al.” And he wasn’t any good at the work.
Tumblr media
At least recess was fun.

1904
Shortly after moving into the tenement on Shipping Street, the Ledermans welcomed their second daughter, baby Rose.
Izzy and Sol were thrilled to be big brothers again...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...but Pearl wasn’t at all sure how she felt about not being the baby anymore.
Tumblr media
Rose was a sickly child who spent most of her time fussing or fast asleep. She would even doze off sitting up in her high chair. It worried Chana, especially given how energetic her other children were. She tried to keep Rose around her siblings as much as possible, hoping that she’d want to start crawling in order to play with them.
Tumblr media
Pearl, at least, enjoyed her sister more when she realized that she had a captive audience.

1902
faSolomon Lederman was born February 12, 1902. A quiet, calm baby, he was happiest when being held in his mother’s arms. Chana was relieved—perhaps not all of her children would be as wild as Isador.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For his part, Isador was thrilled to be an older brother, and took up the job of entertaining Sol whenever his parents were busy.
Tumblr media
Pesach’s reputation as a handyman grew in Willow Creek. He seemed to have a knack for repairing new-fangled iceboxes and flush toilets. When the city mandated the inclusion of both in all rental properties, the Lederman’s landlord quickly hired Pesach as a full-time handyman.
With a regular salary, the family was able to afford better food…
Tumblr media
…as well as a pair of new boots for Isador on his second birthday. He insisted on wearing them everywhere.
Tumblr media
The steady income helped when, ten months later, Pesach and Chana’s first daughter arrived in the world. She was named Pearl, after Chana’s mother Perle, who had passed away when she was only ten.
Tumblr media
Edit: Isador’s outfit is by @linzlu . May be a bit fancy for a handyman’s son, but too cute!

Late 1901-1902
As 1902 rolled around, Isador grew from a wiggly baby...
Tumblr media
...into a rambunctious toddler.
Tumblr media
It was hard for Chana to keep up with him, especially when she discovered, shortly before Isador’s second birthday, that she was pregnant again. Her first pregnancy hadn’t been easy, but her second, with a toddler on the loose, was exhausting. She found herself taking long naps during the day, leaving Pesach to look after Isador whenever he wasn’t working.
Tumblr media
As the baby’s due date approached, the Ledermans took a day trip to Brighton Beach. Pesach entertained Isador with sand castles and stories, while Chana made friends with another expectant mother.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kitty was expecting her first child, and was more than a little nervous. Chana gave her some tips and they vowed to meet up again once their children were born.
