i was thinking how, after a few days without gaming, my dopamine leves are already so low i can’t find motivation to do anything, even on stimulants (ritalin, maybe vyvanse would be different). it can’t possibly be that, among all evils in the world, “not gaming” is really a challenge for people to do stuff to survive - even struggling with executive dysfunction, surely millions of people have had it in the past, billions, and people still managed to survive anyway. why can’t i?

autism is as much a social disability as a biological one. and i mean that in the sense that as millennials and gen z, our parents raised us in a way that augments the social challenges autistic people face. we had access to videogames which were infinitely more comfortable for us than going outside and not getting why the other kids prefer to play among themselves and not include you. we never had to figure out why we’re bad at some stuff and how to get better at it; which is partly why, i believe, autism diagnoses are on the rise, and not just that the neurosciences have advanced. most parents of autistic people are autistic themselves, but it’s not something that presents a significant challenge to them, because they were forced to “deal with it” (notwithstanding all the subsequent trauma).

what did people to do build up dopamine in the past, to destress, relax? well, look at the horizon, i suppose. step on earth barefoot, herd cattle. or plunge into the wildness and look for new edible plants. but i live in a city. a huge, complicated maze of buildings and people. the things that people historically did to be happy are not things i grew up associating with happiness because they were never accessible to me. the things i do to be happy, that my brain is wired to release dopamine when i do, are things that were not accessible a hundred years ago and pretty much rely on an extremely complex world economy to keep electronics factories going.

most of my pc hardware is from ~2015. i have never had a job, which is unsurprising because i’m gen z autistic (as it happens, i just moved out last week). i don’t have an income to buy the things that make me happy, that my parents used to buy for me when i was younger, but now i can’t reasonably ask them to. i have to do it myself, but how can i expect to function without doing what makes me happy? which is what brought me to the first question. gaming is definitely not on any survival list. like, the people of sentinel island don’t game to survive. so why should i? and i think i came up with a sound explanation. it’s real to me anyway. if i don’t game i don’t get dopamine and motivation to cook, let alone anything else.
