You know. Maybe the gems were/are emotionally immature people because the majority of them were born in a society where having emotions and personal desires was literally considered a privilege for the elite, and even the elite could only express them in extreme circumstances. Nobody ever really taught them how to regulate anything they felt whatsoever, and that gaping hole in their development followed them even thousands of years after they defected from their shitty society.

a lot of people will play dragon age 2 and they'll be like... whoa.... anders is truly a grey character who does both good and evil......
when in actuality anders blowing up the chantry was not only good but based, sexy, and inspirational and he has never done wrong a day in his life

I unfortunately picked up Bravely Default 2 again (I bought it back when it released) and then started over since I last played it in June 2021. And. You know what. I like these silly beans. And then I saw concept art for Dag's expressions and I am not the same. Why did they decide to give him huge fangs in it.
(also I'm trying so hard to avoid spoilers less for plot but more for characters so if you know anything that happens to characters shhhhh. also the expression concept is below the read more so you can see what I mean.)

#bravely default 2#dag rampage#selene noetic#i only just recently reached ch2 in the game and i may have a problem#someone was like wait how have you not gotten farther in 25 hours#and im like im sorry its a problem i have an obsession you dont understand#and then he found out i had three of the four party members with two jobs capped at 12#and then the fourth only had one capped but a bunch high up#and then i told him i was trying to get the gambler asterisk and that meant i had to play a childrens card game#and then i had to do side quests when they popped up#and he was like wait at that point you probably dont need jobs at 12 omg#and im like i know its a problem i cant stop it#so anyway chapter 1 took me forever because i committed to the grind too much#the emotions i feel for silly lil side characters ................ its too real#like even the fact that you beat these two up in the prologue im like teehee funny lil blonde guy#then you dont interact with them in a ch1 quest but they show up again at the same time doing the same quest#and guys i am FEELING EMOTIONS theyre just funny lil mercenaries doin funny lil mercenary things#also please do not tell me anything about the game past ch1 because i want to continue to enjoy experiencing it#which is why i have my ask box closed bc its a game from 2021 and i know im really behind the times#but i managed to not know anything until now and i wanna keep it that way#also i dont really know how to properly draw noses especially when i doodle#but his nose is important and i already struggle with his big jaw so i had to include it somehow#and in the concept art it looks like he has a lil stubble but in game i dont see it so im like ... squinting at he

Not to be a killjoy I know but saying super inappropriate things in crowded commons areas in a game marketed to children is a little. Cringe. Like if you're in an instance with friends who cares but talking about vibrators and masturbation in the ambrose commons? Have some decency.

once again reminded that the reason talking about anders is such a pain is that people just straight up make things up that directly contradict what the game says just to make a point

with toriel and asgore it's like. they're both flawed and their flaws parallel one another, but they're not EQUALLY flawed... like..... come on......
#let's be serious here. just say you don't like toriel and move on. but don't pretend her hypocrisies were in any way comparable#in size in subsequent damage or in blame to asgore's own#the game goes out of its way to show asgore's actions as wrong. both towards his people and towards toriel. noble yes. sympathetic. tragic.#heartwrenching. narratively impeccable and capable of genuine chance. but fundamentally the wrong choice made by a good man#toriel may not have made the best possible choice at every turn but her final intentions were the morally correct ones#she just did what she KNEW was right. even when it meant leaving her entire life and people behind to live in isolation.#asgore backed toriel into that corner just as much as he did himself#he was a good man who was in a world of hurt and that decision hung over him for the rest of his life but it WAS. HIS. DECISION.#you cannot take that from him. you cannot take the teeth out of his character like that#and you cannot take toriel's role as the person who challanges and refutes his decision from her#her entire character was created as a subversion of rpg motherhood. and how it had so little of motherhood in it.#letting children venture out into the wilderness to face god knows what god knows where#WHICH IS!!! IN ITSELF!!!! A NARRATIVE PARADOX. because it's something that the genre requires for the story to exist#you can't play the whole game on tutorial. the contradictory nature of her stance between morality & ut's genre is built into her character#that's what makes her so freaking interesting to begin with!!!!!! like.#OUGH#undertale#toriel#asgore#entry log

wait wait wait, I get oot being a narrative about being forced to grow up early bc literally everything abt kokiri forest, but how is it a narrative about adults failing children? Link in particular? I'd think if anything they failed Zelda by not taking her warnings seriously so she had nobody to help her prevent it except Impa and a kid she met less than a week ago, which in the end was their ruin that Link had to deal with...oh ok that sums it up doesn't it. but I'm. Actually struggling to recall concrete, on-screen adult characters lmao.
Ok ok recap, the Deku tree didn't actually send for Link until he was Literally Dying (and given that it was too late to save him from the curse and some kokiri had noticed something wrong with the forest, he must have stuck with it WITHOUT saying anything for a while) and given that literally all the kokiri are kids he didn't have much of a choice pick. Can't remember if Darunia actually asked Link to clear the dodongo cave or if he did it on his own...but yeah the Zora king was useless—dude, don't ask the nine year old to crawl in the belly of a giant fish and GET OFF YOUR BUTT. Sage of Light was a BITCH like, shut up and don't blame the 9 yo for opening the sacred realm, ganondorf would have gotten there eventually and hurting a lot more people in the process, where the hell were you when it happened given that this is YOUR temple. And then when he was 16 most ppl wouldn't know that he's still 9 inside so I think I glazed over from there? Maybe I shouldn't have, but I get the feeling that kids come of age and are trusted with adult responsabilities earlier in their world—I mean, in wind waker Link came of age at 12.
OK that's like 4 adults who failed to deal with their own problems but I really think the Deku Tree tried his best until the curse forced his non-existent hand. Honorary mentions for useless adults include Malon's lazy father and the greedy stable hand (poor Malon) and the castle patrolling guards. And the windmill guy not checking the well after u play the song of storms bc HOLY SHIT. And whoever sealed the well in the future nor sealing the top too, are you ASKING for someone to fall down there
oh this is great. more people should come into my asks and then literally make my entire point for me

the thing about nahida is that while she is very obviously purposefully depicted as childlike in image & childhood in general is an extremely important symbol of hers. she's Very notably Not literally a child

Thinking about the takes I've seen that act like the Collector is a badly written character because he has a "complete personality shift" between King's Tide and For The Future and it makes me a little crazy cause it's just like... That is quite literally the point just cause you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad writing.
I think it's really well done that we saw the Collector as this intimidating and vengeful figure BECAUSE we only ever saw them from the perspective of people who were either afraid of him or manipulating him and then once we see him from a new perspective it becomes clearer that not only is this a scared child but also that this is an innocent kid who literally just wants to feel accepted and to goof around like yeah we got Belos' propaganda that the Collector was a terrifying/manipulative powerful god-like thing that's only motivated by their own needs and we sort of fell for it just because the other characters all did, they had no reason not to in the context of what they saw
Then we see them from a new perspective and the crux of his character is revealed and we see things from HIS perspective and it doesn't change his actions or what he's said but it recontextualizes what we've seen and heard from them before this point.
Like no the shift in how the Collector is portrayed was done very well imo it's just not done super obviously
