when-harry-met-sally-ification of hangster is genius!!!! i would love to hear more about that if you don't mind sharing!

also - what's on your bradley bradshaw playlist? what's genre do you associate w/ him the most?

oh god. oh you don’t even know man. hangster being harry met sally (1989) is one of those things that only makes sense in my head or with a lot of background context, because if i were to just come out and say “rooster is like sally because he’s a chronic perfectionist and an emotional powder keg that lets everything pile up until the last moment (plus his mom is meg ryan), and hangman’s like harry because he’s an cynical asshole who’s actually gooey on the inside and doesn’t speak before he thinks and chooses to push peoples buttons and yearns more than he lets on” to someone who’s only seen both movies in passing, i’m going to get a lot of blank stares and nervous laughter. "isn't that every romcom couple ever?" yes. but i mean--

BAR. FOR BAR. I have wayyy more examples and comparisons but my computer explodes every time I try to add a picture or god forbid a gif. mostly, the "we've met before and it went terrible both times, but the third time we met it stuck and we managed to finally find equal footing and fall in love," is sooooo special to me. and since when harry met sally is an 80s movie (derogatory) and people bog down on the "men and women can't be friends" thing it gets a lot of flack, but by the end of the movie the whole dynamic shifts and becomes more like "why are we putting such big expectations on a relationship when I just love you. plain and simple. no wishy-washy philosophy applies because we've outgrown it and now know each other as equals." (plus that whole first "idea" is brought up by a cynical twenty-something who changes his entire worldview by the end of the movie bc he's fallen in love. why stick to your guns about an idea that's outdated when (a) people are too complicated to fall into your boxes and (b) uhhh who cares. you're in love. I always thought the change in harry's character is supposed to reverse his previous claim in the beginning of the movie and make fun of it for being kind of elementary. but maybe I'm thinking too hard about it.) I'm definitely glossing over some plot points and nuance and whatever but again, this dynamic is something that came directly out of my mind and basically only applies to how I've sandcastled hangster into what I want to see. plus I watched WHMS at like nine years old and it might've had some debilitating side effects. enjoy with an entire pile of salt.

about music now. I'm one of those people that is the ugly kind of pretentious about character playlists (his ass would NOT listen to hayloft by mother mother, shit like that) but also spends net zero time actually building a playlist that follows a timeline or theme. so I just sort everything into two separate playlists/categories: songs that [insert character] would listen to "canonically" and songs [insert character] is aligned with in my own opinion. sometimes there's overlap!!! and sometimes I'm forcing myself to decide if Bradley listens to third eye blind or is the kind of guy who makes fun of people who listen to third eye blind. I still can't decide. I wasn't alive when he was in high school. and you know you're up a creek without a paddle when American Pie (1999) becomes reliable historical material. anyway here's the best way I can describe the difference in the two:

Bradley's own playlist: teenage boy from SoCal in the late 90s early 2000s. in my mind he was always kinda quiet in school and did partake in band so he could play the piano (yes, in jazz band. if I hear a Whiplash joke I'm airing the room out) and spent a lot of time listening to anything and everything that wasn't uhhh Britney Spears adjacent. but lots of blink-182, foo fighters, Pearl Jam, nirvana. probably some early Coldplay. maybe some of The Killers when he got to college, and Radiohead but in secret and when Maverick wouldn't bully him for listening to so much "sad ass (unspoken: gay) music." and of course he's Goose's son, soooo: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Jim Croce, Billy Joel, Allman Brother's Band, Hall & Oates, CCR, Eagles, etc. From Maverick (and Ice): U2, Pearl Jam, The Cars, more dad yacht rock, maybe Metallica (??) depends on if you think Maverick would ever mess around with something hair metal adjacent. of course he prays at the alter of Bruce Springsteen like his fathers before him. and his mom filled in everything else: Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Paul Simon, Wham! (George Michael being outed....hoo boy. #1 topic NOT discussed at the Bradshaw-Mitchell-Kazansky dinner table.), George Strait, Hootie & The Blowfish, miscellaneous female country music from the 90s like Faith Hill and Shania Twain. Alison Krauss & Union Station! Alanis Morissette! The Goo Goo Dolls? now I'm just listing things but you get the picture.

my playlist about Bradley: anything about hating your dad or your hometown with lyrics that apply. see photo below and you'll get the vibe.

[also, that ONE specific photo of miles teller in project x is the photo that sailed a thousand fics. i love that photo. i wrote this entire fucking fic around that photo. it’s so bradley nicolas bradshaw to me.]

but overall my biggest examples of songs that apply to him (for me) are Little Giant by Roo Panes, Release by Pearl Jam, and The Long Way Around by the Chicks. Seventeen by Sharon Van Etten bc of how it makes me feel about Maverick and him (sick in the head.) souvenir by boygenius. faith by bon iver. Hot & Heavy by Lucy Dacus and The Steps by HAIM for hangster vibes. too much Taylor Swift and Maggie Rogers that I don't know how to explain without having a published fic. I have a ton more and I want to pick like 10 songs from each section and go into heavier detail, but I should probably put something out before I dig myself a hole pffft.

One Day (An Icemav fic)

"Why do you hate me?" Maverick asks one day, quiet and tired, staring into the depths of his locker.

"I don't." Ice says the words matter-of-factly, not looking up from his watch as he fastens it to his wrist.

"Why are you so mean, then?" Maverick feels almost five years old as he asks the question, but the scared, abandoned child within him can't hold it in any longer, he needs to know.

Ice looks at him, and before Maverick's very eyes, he watches as the coldness in the other man melts away. Ice is looking at him too, only instead of a pinched and hardened expression, he looks morose, almost sad.

"Because I can't let anyone know," Ice sighs.

"Know what?" Maverick feels entiteled to know.

"That I've fallen for you."

Maverick doesn't know what to say, when he'd first asked he hadn't been expecting a confession. He'd expected Ice to repeat his earlier statements about him being dangerous, conceited, full of himself, and thoughtless. But this- this was something else.

Not knowing what else to do, Maverick stepped over the bench dividing them in the locker room, and took Ice's face into his hands reverently. Closing his eyes, Maverick leaned in and pressed his lips to Ice's. Short, quick, and chaste as the kiss is, it conveys everything Maverick wants Ice to know that he can't convey with his words.

Stepping back again, Maverick looks up at Ice and feels something wild and raging between them settle at the love-sick look in Ice's eyes.

"We can't," Ice breathes, tears gathering in his eyes.

Maverick knows this, nodding in silent and reluctant agreement. They'd never get away with it, and it'd only end in pain for both of them.

"If things were different," Maverick looks back up into Ice's eyes, lost in the multitude of colors and emotions he finds there.

"If things were different," Ice agrees.

"One day." Maverick brushes his hand over Ice's shoulder, brushing the wrinkles from his uniform.

Swallowing roughly and fighting back tears at the unfairness of it all, Maverick nods once again jerkily and retreats from the locker room, feeling as though his very soul has been flayed open for the world to see.

(25 Years Later, September 2011)

Maverick sinks back into his seat as he watched the events play out on the news in front of him. Repealed. They'd repealed Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Rubbing a hand over his jaw, Maverick waits for the wave of freedom the wash over him, unsure of what to do next. He gets the feeling that he should celebrate.

His phone buzzing with an incoming text message pulls him from his thoughts.

"Things are different." Maverick stares at Ice's message for a minute before replying.

"They are," he agrees. Times had certainly changed, and so had they. Maverick had remained the eternal bachelor thanks to his treacherous heart and the societal expectations the Navy had placed upon it. Ice himself had attempted to play as normal, but it had ultimately ended in the most gentle divorce Maverick had seen, and he'd seen his fair share of divorces being in the military. Maybe their stars had finally aligned, Maverick wondered.

The rolling series of dots appeared under his reply as Ice typed again.

"One day?" Ice's text pops up, followed closely by another. "If I'm not too late?"

Maverick scratches his ear and smiles before formulating a reply. "Friday, 1830."

"It's a date."

Maverick smiles down at his phone screen, unable to stop smiling, recalling the moment they'd shared in the locker room all those years ago.

Top gun 50s/early 60s AU but it's also a boarding school AU.

There's a separate boys and girls school but they kind of interlink, they do dances together and stuff so think like the two schools in Heartstopper and how they're close by and do social stuff together

Carole is a scholarship student, she's a bookworm who has those big glasses and a gap toothed smile. Her roommate is Penny, a nepotism baby with a dad who got offered the role of an Admiral after his excellence as a Captain in The War, she's very sporty and more butch, or as much as she can be in the late 50s/early 60s, as she has 4 brothers.

Carole's friends with the other scholarship kid, Charlotte Blackwood, who's detemined to make it into college even if her parents really don't think that's a woman's place. She's got a weekend job in town and saves all her money up for fancy clothes, bright red lipstick, satin dresses with fur trims and does her hair like Marilyn Monroe. Her roommate is one, Elizabeth Corday, a british student who just wants to be a surgeon like her dad

In the boy's school we have Nick Bradshaw and his cousin, Mark Greene, both kids with dad's in the military. Goose is called that for how he sneaked a goose into the girls dorms during a prank war.

He's best friends with Pete Mitchell, sent to the school by an aunt who just wants him out of the way like everyone. Last year he dormed with goose but this year, let's say their junior year so 16-17, he's been paired with Tom Kazansky, determined to be an Admiral just like his dad.

But Goose realises he not only likes rock and roll, learning to play a lot of songs on the piano much to the teacher's dismay, but also boys. One boy in particular, the Captain of the Football team, Ron Kerner

Ron's a scholarship kid too, he's serious about getting out of his shitty life any way possible and does not have time for dating

Goose goes to the school library with his friend Carole, and finds out that she has a crush on her roommate Penny and, to make it even more taboo for them, her friend Charlie as well

And when his cousin Mark makes the assumption that he's dating her, he gets the brilliant idea to fake their relationship, try to set up their crushes with each other, Charlie with Pete and Penny and Ron, secretly date them behind the scenes, using their double dates as a cover up to go off with their crushes

The only problem is, they have to do this without outing themselves and maybe getting themselves kicked out to conversion therapy *sad 50s noises*

And to add another layer, Penny and Charlie don't even like each other because they're fighting over Pete

Charlie dated him last year, as a cover up and in the poor hope that it will get rid of her outrageous crush on Carole, but showed up after the summer to see him sharing spit with Penny

So they hate each other

But both love Carole

And Carole loves both of them

When hanging out on the weekend, Penny and Carole find themselves alone, one thing leads to another and they end up kissing

Carole still loves Charlie too, and Penny's not giving up her cover with Pete now

At a school dance, Goose, sad that he's still not got closer to Ron, offers her a solution, set Charlie up with Ron, two career focused people who both have an image to up keep

Cue typical rom-com shenanigans, also featuring Carole and Penny cuddling for warmth in winter, Goose watching Ron train and going fully red when he walks over and smiles, all covered in sweat

Eventually, Goose kisses Ron, he teaches him a bit of piano and tries to show him that he can still have his golden future and have fun at the same time

Also Icemav get together in the background

Eventually we get a grease like situation in terms of friendship, but charenrole, sloose and icemav together secretly

Also Mark and Elizabeth get together too, but that's really in the background, just got to sprinkle in my love for ER wherever I can lol

Ever since Charlie had moved, it had been Iceman's mission to make sure his wingman left his apartment for something other work at least once a week. The first week was grocery shopping. Second week was dry cleaning, Maverick's jacket really needed some love. And the third week...

"You want to go out by...by yourself?"

“Yeah." Maverick shrugged as he put on his leather jacket. "Really, Ice, I appreciate what you have done for me, but you have gotta have better things to do than spend your time making sure I get out of my apartment."

"Ah, I guess." Iceman said trying to keep his voice emotionless. Truth be told it was nice spending time with his wingman. It was especially nice now that he was finally cheerful. But he supposed it was too good to last. It's not like they were together.

Maverick unaware of Iceman's thoughts, beamed and patted Iceman's arm, "Thanks I knew you would understand! See you Monday!" Leaving Iceman alone rubbing his arm.

As sad as he was that he and Maverick weren’t going to spending time together that night, there was no way he was just going to sit at home and sulk about it. He could still go out, have a few drinks. Maybe flirt, get rid of the sting of rejection?

It wasn’t his time in the gay bar, but the whole place was less familiar to him than the O-club was. However here he could actually flirt with the men and NOT get a punch to the face, so that was always a plus.

He made his way over to the bar and ordered a drink, eyes scanning the crowd, though the sudden voices next to him stopped that.

“Hey,” The man next to Ice nudged his friend who was standing on his other side, “ look at that handsome guy over there.”

Ice’s eyes flicked over to where the taller of the two men was point to, and Ice’s heart almost jumped out of his chest. Maverick was dancing to a song on the dance floor, all by himself. Ah, so that’s why he wanted to go by himself.

“Yeah, looks like he came alone too.” And before Iceman could say or do anything the taller of the two men made his way over to Maverick on the dance floor.

Iceman watched quietly, It wasn’t his business. He wasn’t with Maverick, he is his own man. He can be with any man he wants.

Although Ice wished that man was him, maybe that’s why he couldn’t look away. He watched as the man spun Maverick around the dance floor, getting very close. It hurt to watch, yet he couldn’t look away.

Then their lips met and Iceman could feel his heart shatter, he shut his eyes. God he wished he was dre-

“Hey-!”

Iceman could hear Maverick’s voice through the crowd. Iceman’s eyes fixed on his wingman, who had pushed the other man away. Maverick was standing with his feet apart as if he was ready for a fight, Mav did not look happy. This man however was almost as tall as Iceman himself. Fuck. No way he could just let Maverick get into a fight by himself. The voices became more clear as he made his way over.

“-I thought you were having fun darling.”

“Didn’t mean I wanted to kiss you.” Maverick huffed. “I am not-”

“Not gay? Now daring I know that’s not true.”

Iceman felt his blood boil, he had to get Maverick out of here, now! So he did what his wingman would do in a deadly situation. No thinking, just doing.

That’s when Iceman spoke up, “He’s not single.” Both of their heads turned to look at Iceman, Iceman ignoring the confusion on Maverick’s face. Iceman slung his arm around Maverick shoulder. “Sorry it took me so long to get here babe, traffic.” Iceman smiled, as Maverick’s expression shifted from one of confusion to a sly grin.

“Don’t worry about it, I know how to keep myself entertained.” Maverick said, leaning on to Iceman.

Iceman hummed, “Hmm although, someone seemed to have too much fun entertaining you.” He looked at the other man who had taken a step back.

"Hey buddy, listen-"

Iceman glared at this man, how dare he think he can talk this way out of this, "No, I will do the talking and you will listen- got it! Just because a man dances with you doesn't mean he owes you shit. Hell the same is true for anyone and if you can't get that through your skull, then you can go home."

But before you do let me make one thing perfectly clear," Iceman leaned towards this man, his voice lowering his grip tightening around Maverick, "If you so much as look in his direction again, I will kill you, is that clear?"

The man slowly back away, fearing the absolute cold fury behind Iceman's eyes. Then he made his way towards the exit. His friend over by the bar following. Iceman huffed, serves them right.

"Hey... T-tom?"

Iceman blinked, then quickly released Maverick," Oh yeah sorry M- Pete." Yeah callsigns here wouldn't be smart.

"No, I was just wondering if you wanted to...go somewhere else."

"Oh...Oh okay, yeah. I will go. Sorry for-"

Maverick grapped Iceman's wrist before he could take two steps, "Jesus, Tom, No. Go somewhere else with me."

Iceman blinked, "You want to?"

"The night is young, I am sure we can find someplace that sells pizza and take it home. My treat."

"Really?"

"Yeah, Just came to my rescue after all."

Iceman chuckled, "Just... returning the favor."

"Sure sure."

And as they made their way out of the bar, Maverick's hand on Iceman's wrist became, Maverick's hand in Iceman's hand.

Huh, maybe they were together this whole time.

maverick mitchell

listen you already know i love maverick mitchell but i Really Really Love Maverick Mitchell with all my heart and i HATE that people refuse to see him for the three-dimensional character that he is (and that tom played him as). he’s determined and confident and has every right to be, he’s a badass pilot, but i love his character arc about learning how to be a team player. i LOVE his relationship with goose and carole and baby!bradley (and ice, in any capacity) and i am so ready for said relationships to Destroy me in the sequel. (also when mav is Sad i am Sad, and it looks like he has had even more to be sad about btwn tg1 and tg2. what happened to you mav. what did they do to you. mcq if u do not give this man a happy ending a hug and some therapy i swear to GOD-)

iceman kazansky

the fact that ice is as much of an ensemble darkhorse / breakout character has everything to do with val kilmer (whom i also love) being a fantastic actor, bc lets be real the script did not give him a lot to work with here. i love his hair and his face and his very pretty eyes (whose color i can STILL not discern after many rewatches) and his absolutely warranted confidence in himself (and as a pilot). i love that he isn’t afraid to call mav out for being unsafe (srsly, he is the Only Sane Man in this entire movie) but appreciates mav’s outside the box / ‘dangerous’ thinking as his wingman. he’s got a big heart (as evidenced by the 'i’m sorry about goose’ scene) behind those ice cold walls, and i cannot WAIT to see how his relationship with mav has grown by the time the sequel is finally released. give me respected admiral iceman kazansky or give me death. if they kill ice off i AM disowning canon mcq, do you hear me.

goose bradshaw

i love goose SO FUCKING MUCH, every bit of him, from the not-at-all-regulation mustache to the bad jokes to the country-fried southern vibe to the singing and piano-playing to how much he respects and cares about mav (and how much mav respects and cares about him in return). his relationship with carole is my favorite thing on this entire earth, followed closely by his relationship with mav and also his relationship with ice. (like ice really respects goose and vice versa, and they clearly knew each other pre-canon, and one of the few times ice smiles genuinely in the movie is at goose - i really wish canon gave us more goose&ice, there’s so much to analyze there.) his death scene makes me tear up every time.

carole bradshaw

carole is the BEST. actual ray of sunshine in human form and also a fashion icon. i adore her optimism and kindness, even in literally the worst times, and i especially love how much she adores goose and mav. forever bitter that they didn’t recast meg ryan to play her in the sequel though i’m sure jean louisa kelly will do a good job bringing carole to the big screen. (NOT a fan of the fact that it looks like she and mav and bradley by extension haven’t spoken in a long time and i Demand an explanation, even if it’s angsty.)

bradley bradshaw / rooster

last we saw bradley he was a little kid who clearly worshipped his dad and by the time the top gun 2 trailer rolled around, he’s the spitting image of his father, serious and determined to make a name for himself (with possible authority issues like young!mav, given he’s still a lieutenant in his late thirties). i am very excited to meet him, and i’m also super excited to see his relationships with phoenix and the other pilots, and with jean louisa kelly’s carole bradshaw. (if bradley is playing great balls of fire on the piano in that one clip in the trailer i am going to just. straight up drop dead.)

speaking of the trailers it’s clear bradley holds a serious grudge towards mav - “my dad believed in you, i’m not gonna make the same mistake” GOD. what happened btwn mav and bradley? what happened to their relationship?? (who taught him to blame mav for his dad’s death bc i hope to god it wasn’t carole - i’m leaning toward jon hamm’s character bc he seems like an asshole who does not like mav, or maybe even mav just refusing to correct bradley’s assumption bc he blames himself too.) anyway, PLEASE tell me bradley realizes he’s being an asshole by blaming mav for his dad’s death and works on repairing their relationship (and works through his own grief as well).

phoenix

one of the people i am most excited to meet in the sequel! i don’t know anything about her besides the info from a 2017 casting call describing her as a “fierce pilot, gifted leader, kind of a loner, eager to prove herself, who falls for bradley aka rooster,” but that is enough to make me Very Excited to meet her - ESPECIALLY if the bradley/phoenix is going to be set up like icemav, which i have a strong suspicion it’s going to be, complete with height difference. (phoenix: *does anything*, bradley: top me top me top me.) also, a potential mav&phoenix father/daughter relationship????? Sign Me The Fuck Up. this movie is just going to end with me in tears and with custody of seven or eight new children.

listen apparently he is just a cryptid because we only know his name and i THOUGHT he was gonna be a main character since he was one of the first to get named, but we have only seen him on the periphery of some scenes in the trailers, even after all this time, so now i kinda doubt it. but he is played by the gorgeous manny jacinto and he and bradley sat near each other once so i am assuming they are friends in some way, and also my headcanon of him as amy santiago trapped in the body of jason mendoza has made me love him very much. pls don’t kill him, canon. also pls @ manny and mcq and kosinski give me SOMETHING to work with here lmao.

hangman

look. i know mcq and co are probably going to set up hangman vs rooster to be like mav vs ice, enemies/rivals to friends, but honestly, i’m not all that here for it??? i do like that from his callsign alone, hangman is probably going to be a darker version of ice (less kind, more focused on the job, maybe more like charlie than like ice if that makes any sense at all) and his rivalry with bradley is already clearly a lot more heated than mav’s ever was with ice. anyway, glen powell is an excellent actor, so let’s hope he makes hangman a 3d character in his own right and not just an iceman expy.

payback, fanboy, and bob

i’m already lowkey shipping payback/fanboy and i love bob for looking like a dorky 21st century radar o’reilly, but honestly, not super on the edge of my seat to meet these guys. i do want to know whose WSO bob is - my guess is phoenix’s since they were sitting next to each other at one point, but he could also be hangman’s - and my worry is that since he’s the only named WSO right now, they could very well Pull A Goose and kill him off in a training accident. (i hope not since i don’t want a complete canon redux, but it would definitely be angsty.)
