the fact that aurelia and hudson denholm canonically have entire LIBRARY SECTIONS dedicated to their exploits WHILE THEY ARE STILL ALIVE AND KICKING (according to p!owen) makes me feel. extremely unwell.
good god when p!scott is on about being under pressure to live up to the family name and p!acho is on about feeling like a family disappointment. HOW do you even… no WONDER…

pirates smp morality tier list based vaguely on canon and partially on vibes, 2024/04/23
as per usual, this is about the cubitos and not the real-life people
[link to tier list, 6 late additions were manually added]
Characters in each tier are listed based on alphabetical order of preferred names
Level 1: No one is on Level 1 / purely white morality because that's kind of hard to achieve at all, and especially not on the high seas.
Level 2:
Cleo: Doesn't partake in enough lore to do anything bad, one of the few consistent characters who actually didn't kill anyone.
Graecie: Trying so hard to hold it all together, may have had her fair share of interpersonal conflicts but generally plays a voice of reason.
Jojo: Probably one of the most emotionally stable people on the Isles, and tries to sympathize with others for the most part. Can't blame her for making incorrect inferences based on limited information.
Will: Had the potential of dropping lower according to data from the writer's room, but in canon? Not really, actions were all perfectly understandable and reasonable in accordance with present knowledge, just… the idealistic approach did NOT work out. (Nor would the cynical approach, according to the writer's room; my guy's just doomed by the narrative either way.)
Level 3:
Eloise: Mostly just living her life; points deducted for the occasional bounty.
Michela: Releasing the Corruption did seem like a bad idea… at the time. In hindsight, it was the right decision to make, but in the moment… IDK, this one is just vibes.
Ros: Generally just a nice and sweet person; points deducted for the Sabertooth ordeal, but in her defense, there was blackmail and threats involved. Based on vibes.
Scott: Didn't exactly do anything wrong; points deducted for occasional pettiness. Again, a vibes judgement.
Water: Again, just living her life and being mostly nice; points deducted for occasional mishaps like being Eloise's bounty accomplice.
Level 4:
Acho: Mainly just here for being way too Byronic for stars own good. And also the self-destructiveness and sunk cost fallacy ordeal towards the end. But mostly vibes.
Aimsey: Points deducted for the pride/thinking oneself invincible (to be quickly proven wrong) and dishonesty, but let's be real: they're mostly nice, and that's pretty good by our standards.
Kyle: I've either heard through the grapevine or vaguely recall that his character arc was going to go in a much darker direction, but didn't have time to play it out, so this is my compromise. Also, it would be funny to put him in the same level as p!Acho.
Seapeekay: Live fast, die young, but essentially did nothing particularly bad.
Level 5:
Apo: Essentially written to be True Neutral to be dragged in opposing directions, and out of respect for canon, he's smack in the middle of the scale.
Bek: Has jerkish moments but is willing to do the right thing. It's mostly just the mercenary business and all that.
Eret: Mostly keeps to themself and just cares about themself. The worst thing they actually did in canon was the bounty. Big True Neutral vibes.
Guqqie: The classism is what puts her as far down as here. Otherwise, she's capable of being nice, she's just… not usually nice, you know?
Oli: On the self-serving side and just wants to go home to his family and make big bucks and all. Points deducted for capitalism.
Owen: Big carpe diem energy and only really cares for himself, might need therapy to unpack all that but that would be anachronistic.
Sausage: Again, it's the joke-classism and the trolling. Capable of being nice and does care about people around him, but still has a jerkish streak. Technically dips down to Level 8 for a bit towards the end, but in his defense, he was possessed at the time and fighting it.
Level 6:
Kuervo: Only ranked this far down for the mass murder. The fact it was tyrannicide is pretty much the only thing that keeps him from dropping to a lower level. Otherwise, probably a 4, but by that point, he wouldn't be here at all.
Scar: May have questionably left his old crew to die to save himself. Whether he actually killed them himself is never confirmed. Scamming leaves him in this tier. Didn't stick around for long enough to confirm or deny this level.
Tubbo: Here for the casual non-canonical murders and theft and vandalism and all that. Didn't stick around for long enough for further judgement, but from the ~2 weeks he was here, this is what leaves him at.
Level 7:
Shep: This man's moral compass is not pointing north!! Let's check off the canonical murder and voluntary manslaughter first! But then he's also capable of being nice to some people and he doesn't exactly take pleasure in hurting others or go out of his way to do so, so… compared to, say, his mentor, he's already somewhat decent.
Level 8:
Martyn: Being from the Datastream means he's playing 4-D chess with the world but I am not excusing his tomfoolery, especially since he is having a hard time comprehending that HIS ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES on the world! The whole Blondbeard arc. Just… that. And also how he acts towards p!Ros in canon is just plain mean… laughing about wanting to see her cry as her castle gets burnt and bombed to its foundations is… ARGH. THIS MAN. HE IS SO CLOSE TO CROSSING THE LINE.
Levels 9 and 10: Special spot reserved for Iris and co. for crossing the Line.
Everyone else: Didn't stick around for long enough, but I can vaguely clear a few off or speculate:
Olive: Definitely below a 5; probably 2–3 based on their one (1) stream.
Shelby: Maybe Level 5 for being kind of a rude snob, but didn't stick around to complete her Alexis Rose arc, so I'd say there is potential for her to be Level 4 (or lower), but we don't know with what our information is.

i think it is interesting that out of the 8 wcsmp main cast, the 3 who joined pirates smp are all herons. and all 3 are members of The Coven. it's almost as if fate pulls them together.
and then there's sausage and oli, who make a cameo appearance in one (1) of el's episodes on youtube. both of them are kestrels.
do you ever think about that?

hudson and aurelia: we have made the future #1 heron (and a disappointment, we guess)...
magpie and seagull chats: you fucked up two perfectly good children is what you did. look at them. they were willing to throw themselves into a spike pit for each other with ZERO hesitation.

okay so apparently the post i made at 4am last night about the denholm family legacy and corresponding mental health implications blew up and now i'm receiving all sorts of screaming (/pos) in the tags. on a Related note, i've been brainrotting about p!scott's character intro sequence so much and now i Need to yell about all this somewhere or i'm gonna cry.
"Okay (×7), what do I need? Big day. BIG day. Okay. Okay, um, let's get the spyglass Dad got me and… Mum got me the new journal [to] write down all my discoveries."
the fact that the journal p!scott was using as a diary was meant for THIS. THIS was what it was meant to be used for. i would just like to point this out to y'all.
the EXPECTATIONS from the very start. good god it's so offhand of a comment but i am Stuck here. the Expectation of following in your family's footsteps. it's not just "do what We did" but also "do what you are Supposed to do".
"What else do I need? Ehm… outfit, check… oh, food! Um, Mum said… there we go, she'd made me five mutton wraps, okay, this will- I'm a little bit hungry… no, I shouldn't, I gotta save this; this has got to do me for a while until I can, like, find my own things. Ehm, what else do I need to take? It's Initiation Day, so everything starts here."
i don't have much of a comment on this. i really don't. only thing i can probably say is my headcanon of p!scott learning to cook from his mother.
"Um… the sword. Right. This is a family heirloom; it's served all the other Herons well, it'll serve me well, I'll definitely- I'm gonna discover so many things, I'm gonna make everyone proud, just like I was… born to do. Just like I was meant to do, 'cause I'm a Heron and that's- it's all I've ever been, and it's all I'm… was ever gonna be."
god the RESIGNATION. just. the resignation of having so much pressure put on you that it can crush rocks without using a machine. there's no way out of Being in the heron faction and doing what herons are Supposed to do. we see in the vods it's not that you Don't enjoy exploring and discovering things, but Man, would you prefer to do it on your own terms?
(what was going through your head when your brother turned up on the isles again, after you thought star dead and mourned star for a year? when star decided to join a Different faction from you and go against all you both have been taught?)
(you called the nightingales stars "new family" during the dipper quest. it's undeniable that you still love your brother and we all know that, but do you feel abandoned in that star has left you to join a new faction and have stars own life? do you feel that being in different factions means you Shouldn't have a place in stars life anymore, though you refuse to let your actions show it? do you envy star for having escaped the toxic environment where you both grew up in? that while you were born and saddled with all the expectations, star shouldn't have had to worry as much because your parents put all their eggs in a single basket, i.e. you?)
and the sword. the sword being a physical Reminder of all the baggage that comes with being raised by Internationally Famous parents who Expect you to do the same or risk their disappointment… something you either can't imagine or would rather not imagine?
"Ehm, hm… well, I'm- I guess this is everything. (sigh) Here we go. It's the life I always wanted, or at least, the life that I was given."
ohhhhh god the implication of being told this is the life you are Supposed to aspire to. and going along with it because you were raised to believe this is the life you Should have and internalizing it because you can barely even Imagine an alternative.
even when you ask yourself, "do you Really want to live like this?", do you hesitate to answer? it is just a yes/no question but does your answer Always have a "but" after it? because going against what you've been taught growing up is Not An Option For You, at least in your mind?
oh to think when someone asks, "how do you Live like this?", the response in your heart is "you don't." because in a toxic household, there is only survival and you Build Your Bed on surviving based on what you have been taught. because you can barely fathom a life where this Isn't the case.
"Alright, I'm gonna be late. Look out, world, Scott Denholm, #1 Heron, ready for action!"
this sounds like an assurance of confidence, yeah, but who Are you trying to convince? are you telling the world, or are you telling yourself? with all that you have already said, one might wonder which is truly the case.
(also, when cc!scott said that his character had "anxiety" from trying to live up to the expectations, was this supposed to mean "anxiety (emotion)" or "anxiety (disorder)"? because while the first one is very obvious, i would not be surprised if the second one happens to be the case as well.)
in summary: p!acho is a walking embodiment of trauma and drops it in Moments across many livestreams so you don't forget. p!scott is Also a walking embodiment of trauma but drops it in the first three minutes of the series and Never speaks of it again.

according to p!cleo, she first arrived on the faction isles and became a heron years before the events of the smp (source from the day sniff arrived), but didn't know p!scott had a brother until day 1 and yet has met the denholm parents before. this leaves two logical conclusions for why this may be the case:
p!cleo was exaggerating how long she had been on the isles and only arrived after p!acho ran away from home and was assumed dead, i.e. at most a year and a half before the events of the smp – which i find to be implausible because the denholm parents are Really Famous and it wouldn't make sense for p!cleo to meet them Years after arriving on the isles, joining the same faction as them, and becoming friends with one of their sons; or
the denholm parents pretend p!acho doesn't exist and many of the people who live on the isles (especially non-herons but even some herons) don't know about p!acho not just being born to famous heron parents but existing at all as a result of this – also supported by p!graecie and p!will (who have been nightingales since before recruitment day) not knowing why p!acho has such strong animosity against the herons.

pirates lore update:
p!martyn is salty about the sun god not protecting hook and stole the sunset stone (the sun god's power source) and hid it in a place even us rats don't know where it is.
p!scott, p!eloise, and p!acho got salty at the sunset stone being stolen and have now broken the bridge between the kestrel base and the rest of the faction isles. eloise's rat chat have petitioned to chew through p!martyn's boat as revenge.

more pirates smp thoughts from going through my dms
p!apo was the only person that p!acho told about the familial relation; everyone else who knows got it from p!scott
"denholm manor"
p!jojo doesn't know about the familial relation; "p!graecie seems really upset about it" BOY you haven't heard it from p!scott
we still don't know if p!owen got put in an arranged marriage or not (at best it's implied but nothing really came of the yt series either so we can only speculate)
p!scott not restocking the dumpling stall bc he was "being preoccupied" and it was "taken second priority". out-of-universe it's bc it was the last week of the smp but in-universe…
p!shelby's chat was also seagulls. and she had a sibling-like dynamic with p!scott too.

pirates smp headcanons based on recent events:
p!acho was the one to steer p!scott's boat on oct 12 lore stream because star just knew things. like how the steering wheel requires a certain semi-obscure technique or grip to steer it properly (their parents taught them that). or where the snacks are kept on the boat.
p!martyn (and r!martyn by extension) is able to understand any relevant language he comes across while travelling through the datastream. kind of like a universal translator perk but only in fictional worlds.
the factioning invitations from the "representatives" take the form of acceptance letters
p!scott has fallen asleep in the croco cave more than once. several of the other pirates are concerned™️
the faction isles have a mosquito problem
