So I came across this little outdoor brass light fixture that was just yelling at me to make something out of it for my plants! I have slowly been introducing more brass items into my decor, but I didn’t want to go with the typical brass candle holders and pots. Instead I’ve been trying to find anything unusual that could be used for plants or plant cuttings. This little brass electric lantern looked like it could house a tiny plant inside, and it is the perfect size to sit on my faux mantle(wall shelf) next to my other displayed treasures. My kitchen window view. This has been my kitchen view for the past few months, and I am not tired of it one bit! So who out there likes using unusual vintage items as plant stands or to give your potted plant some height?! Here’s a quick little easy project that turned out great and is exactly what I wanted to incorporate into my plant area! A few weeks ago, I came across this vintage metal cake stand at my local SA, that I knew, once painted black, would be thee perfect way to display a plant or to give a plant some height! Trying to keep with my black & white enamel theme in the plant area, I thought this piece would add a nice touch and would look great with any plant! Other items I’ve used to raise my plants higher are by using my vintage scales, little wooden stools or mini chairs, stacked books, upside down container(plant pot)! Ya know thinking outside the box and using items for a different purpose is what I aim for! Oh how I love finding little treasures and using them for a different purpose! On one of my thrift trips to my local thrift store, I found these charming little mid century modern globe glass and brass candle holders. I have been on the look out for smaller brass items to decorate my mantle. Instead of taper candle holders and small round brass bowls & dishes, I’m looking for something more sculptural or unusual. Of course I didn’t want to use this for candles, it just had to be for plants of course!😂 So I had to find just the right size holder for some root cuttings. That was the challenge! I did manage to find and use shot glasses that fit perfectly into the hanging candle holder! If I ever change my mind, and decide to use it with votive candles I still can. I have been trying to find the perfect lamp in my unusual corner that has plants and a vintage painting. I say unusual because it’s not a perfect corner, in fact it is built around the chimney that goes through the house. I used to have an industrial like floor lamp with Edison bulbs that looked ok before when my living room was painted yellow. But for some reason it didn’t quite look right or provide the room with brighter light we need for the dark winter months. Until I remembered everything already had a vintage brass lamp we inherited from my mother-in-law over 25yrs ago that we barely use and has become completely dusty and tarnished. Before I went ahead and gave it a good polish and cleaning with ketchup and vinegar, I checked to see if I had a spare lampshade. I might need a bigger shade on it, not quite sure. But voila! I found the perfect lamp that was in my home this whole time and didn’t spend a penny!! How do you like the transformation? The lamp looks so perfect with my treasured vintage paint-by-number painting and my plants! Ive always been a sucker for all those holiday decorations, even though it’s unfortunately celebrated on just one day. I think Valentines should be celebrated everyday in different ways, and not just for married and dating couples. Why not celebrate the love you have for yourself, your sibling(s), parent(s), fur baby(s) or pets. I know there are a lot people out there who are anti-holiday due to it being a very commercial and materialistic world. But you don’t have to celebrate it in that way. Try to think outside the box and celebrate it another unique ways. My love for vintage and my plants and memories of childhood Valentines is celebrated in this way. I decided to add a touch of whimsy and valentines to my vintage Underwood typewriter and enamel carafe in my plant area. Santa Claus is coming to town! Ok, so these two pieces are my favourite holiday finds this year(found @oldhouserevival). The 1930-40’s Santa with realistic beard, either brings a smile to your face or (like my kids call him) creepy Santa and gives you the creeps! Haha! He is propped up on a vintage red metal stool, which kind of gives him a baby look sitting in a high hair. I can also use the stool for one of my many plants as well, but thought Santa needed some protection from our new puppy’s teeth! Yes, I know I have a Santa collecting problem. I’ve officially started my Christmas holidays and finally have some time to share more of my Christmas decor. Since collecting vintage Christmas items is still fairly new to me, I still incorporate it with decor I’ve had for years. My Christmas styles have changed throughout my adult life. It wasn’t that long ago I used to have 5 Christmas Trees and would decorate them all differently, as they each had a different theme and colour pattern. Now I only decorate one tree(since my family has grown and I don’t have much room for more trees lol)! This one tree is all I need to for my special ornaments, family keepsake ornaments and new vintage ornaments. I love the traditional colour of reds, whites and greens. An Elfie selfie! Ok, I thought it was cute & funny! This little guy came with my first vintage Santa ornament (previous post), from my mother-in law. My mother-in law passed away a few years ago now, so her ornaments are even more special to us when we get to display them. Her birthday is Christmas Day, a bitter sweet celebration of her and Christmas Day. I remember how she told me over 25yrs ago, that she had to get used to her birthday being forgotten and she would only receive Christmas gifts as her bday gift. Honestly, I don’t know how you can forget someone’s bday if it land on a major holiday??!! Now I am seeing that my daughter may be going through the same experience, since her bday is in December 17th. She doesn’t expect extra gifts, but just some kind of acknowledgement. Maybe it bothers me than her.
