She was demure and elegant in a flowing gown – he looked dapper and debonair in a tailored navy suit.
So pity the poor bride and groom whose lavish Caribbean nuptials were overshadowed by such glamorous guests.
Then again, if you will invite Prince Harry and his actress girlfriend Meghan Markle to your wedding, what do you expect?
All eyes were on the young lovers as the prince attended the wedding of friend Tom ‘Skippy’ Inskip at the weekend in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Not having seen each other for a fortnight, Harry, 32, and 35-year-old Meghan used the trip as an excuse for a romantic reunion – and their affectionate behaviour set tongues wagging that it might not be long before they, too, are walking up the aisle.
For Meghan, the surroundings are not entirely unfamiliar.
In 2011, she married her first husband – film producer Trevor Engleson – at a resort just 60 miles along the coast. So, is she feeling the love second time around?
We reveal exactly what the young couple got up to on their romantic West Indian weekend...
He flies in economy, while she takes a private jet
Harry arrived in Jamaica on Wednesday to join the groom’s party ahead of the big day – he was one of 14 ushers.
The royals don’t use private planes for personal engagements, so he took a Virgin Atlantic flight from Gatwick to Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay.
The prince did splash out on a premium economy seat, costing upwards of £2,000 return.
Meghan flew in the following day from Toronto, where she’s filming US legal drama Suits, in a private jet that belongs to a friend.
Ever the gentleman, Harry picked her up from the airport, greeting her with a kiss before they drove back to the hotel together.
The luxury resort where JFK stayed
With 110 acres of lush tropical gardens, suites designed by Ralph Lauren and its own private bay, the wedding reception venue is the perfect backdrop for royal romance.
The Round Hill Resort was built in the 1950s as a series of luxurious cottages for rich and famous visitors. Guests have included JFK and Jackie Kennedy, who spent their honeymoon here.
Grace Kelly, Fred Astaire, Clark Gable, Sir Paul McCartney, and Emma Watson have also stayed.
Tumblr media
A hotel worker revealed that Meghan and Harry stayed in a £5,000-a-night premium luxury villa, the resort’s most exclusive accommodation away from prying eyes, which comes with its own housekeeper, two pools and a games room with a bar and pool table.
Ever watchful of their safety, security guards were stationed in rooms nearby.
Guests have breakfast served on their balcony, and options include Jamaican delicacies such as ackee (a fruit like a lychee), saltfish with fried dumplings and callaloo (a leafy green vegetable).
It’s quite a change from Meghan’s first trip to the island during her low-key wedding in 2011.
She and her husband-to-be stayed at the four-star Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios, where they indulged in drinking games and wheelbarrow races before saying their vows.
Tumblr media
The (other) very happy couple
It takes a brave bride to invite glamorous, leggy Meghan to your wedding. But flame-haired Lara Hughes-Young didn’t seem bothered about being outshone.
Lara, 30, a software developer at global technology company ThoughtWorks, knows Harry through her new husband ‘Skippy’, who went to Eton with the prince.
She’s the granddaughter of late Conservative MP Michael Hughes-Young.
Her father holds the title Lord St Helens – making her official title the Honourable Lara Inskip.
She is said to have been ‘singing Meghan’s praises’ since meeting her last year.
Tumblr media
They may have been the focus of attention on the day, but Megan and Harry were far from the only notable guests at the wedding.
Harry’s aunt Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, was on the list, accompanied, insiders say, by her daughter Eugenie.
After the ceremony, a smiling Fergie, wearing a black minidress with a jewelled neck, was seen posing for photographs with Pastor Conrad Thomas, who officiated the ceremony.
Archie Soames, one of the ushers, is the great-grandson of Winston Churchill. Maid of honour Alice St Clair Erskine is an actress who portrayed the Duchess of Cambridge in the 2011 American TV show William and Catherine: A Royal Romance.
Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt is rumoured to have popped in for the party.
Trying not to upstage the bride
For the ceremony, Meghan chose a £1,200 floral print maxi dress by Canadian designer Erdem.
Harry opted for a bespoke navy suit, believed to be from his favourite Savile Row tailor Gieves & Hawkes, and teamed with a yellow rose.
Meghan accessorised her elegant attire with a nude clutch bag and a pair of £249 gold-rimmed sunglasses by Dior to shield her eyes from the hot Jamaican sun.
The bride did her best to stay in the spotlight in a breathtakingly simple white satin gown with a plunging neckline and full, flowing skirt – a direct contrast to Meghan’s high-necked style.
Tumblr media
Meghan's tender touch for her prince
Meghan placed a protective arm on Harry’s back as she steered him out of the church and guests say the pair were very tactile throughout the reception as she was introduced to his old friends.
At one point they were seen deep in conversation, as a jacketless Harry drank a beer and Meghan an Aperol spritz cocktail as she continued to rub his back.
Minutes later, she moved even closer, gazing into his eyes and putting her arms around his neck.
‘They are both head over heels and don’t care who sees it,’ said an onlooker.

Lion (2016, Garth Davis)
20/11/2023
Lion is a 2016 film directed by Garth Davis.
Based on the memoir A Long Way Home, the film tells the true story of Saroo Brierley who is played by Dev Patel. The cast also includes Rooney Mara, David Wenham and Nicole Kidman. The film had its world premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, taking 2nd place in the Audience Award.
Khandwa, central India, 1986 - Saroo, five years old, second son of a very poor family, who survives with his older brother Guddu by collecting waste metals, asks the other to be able to work at night in a station near their home village. In search of his brother, the child mistakenly boards a deserted train that leaves and does not stop, taking him to Calcutta, about 1600 kilometers away.
Lost in the chaotic metropolis, not speaking the local Bengali language, Saroo survives on the streets. Hosted by people of ill repute, he manages to escape, only to be noticed by a young employee who speaks his Hindi language and who takes him to a police station so that, by publishing his photo in the newspapers, someone can recognize him. Saroo leaves for Hobart in Tasmania, where he grows up and becomes an adult.
At the age of 27, Saroo is a university student in Melbourne, with numerous Indian friends and loved ones, but he has not forgotten his roots and his family, for which he feels a sense of guilt due to his disappearance. At his girlfriend's insistence, the young man begins researching through Google Earth, desperately searching for his home village based on his fading memories, until he recognizes from a satellite image what appears to be the starting station.
Filming began in January 2015 in Calcutta, India, and continued in mid-April, in Australia, in the cities of Melbourne and Hobart.
The film had its world premiere on 10 September 2016 at the Toronto International Film Festival and subsequently at the London Film Festival and the Rome Film Festival. It was released in US cinemas on 25 November 2016 by The Weinstein Company, while distribution began in Australia on 19 January 2017, and in Italy it was released on 22 December 2016.
For the film Sia composed the song Never Give Up, released as a promotional single.
The score was composed by Dustin O'Happellon and Hauschka and was nominated for Best Original Score at the 2017 Oscars.

How a conservative US network undermined Indigenous energy rights in Canada
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This story is a collaboration between Floodlight, The Narwhal and the Guardian. It is republished here with permission.
A U.S.-based libertarian coalition has spent years pressuring the Canadian government to limit how much Indigenous communities can push back on energy development on their own land, newly reviewed strategy documents reveal.
The Atlas Network partnered with an Ottawa-based think tank — the Macdonald-Laurier Institute — which enlisted pro-industry Indigenous representatives in its campaign to provide “a shield against opponents.”
Atlas, which has deep ties to conservative politicians and oil and gas producers, claimed success in reports in 2018 and 2020, arguing its partner was able to discourage the Canadian government from supporting a United Nations declaration that would ensure greater involvement by Indigenous communities.
The Canadian Parliament did eventually pass the legislation to begin implementing the declaration in 2021, but observers say the government has made little progress to move it forward.
Meanwhile, Indigenous groups linked to the Macdonald-Laurier Institutes’s campaign — including the Indian Resource Council — continue to appear at conferences, testify to federal committees, and get quoted in major media outlets to push the view that Indigenous prosperity is virtually impossible without oil and gas.
Hayden King, executive director of the Toronto-based Indigenous public policy think tank Yellowhead Institute, called the campaign “a contemporary expression of the type of imperialism that Indigenous peoples have been dealing with here for many, many years.”
The Macdonald-Laurier Institute directed questions about the reports to the Atlas Network, which did not respond to requests for comment.
The Atlas Network calls itself a “worldwide freedom movement” and has nearly 500 partners, including think tanks like the Manhattan Institute. Other powerful partners include the Cato Institute, a think tank co-founded by Charles Koch in 1977, as well as the Heritage Foundation, which hosted a keynote speech by Donald Trump in April. Their influence on U.S. politics includes leading campaigns to make Americans doubt if human-caused climate change is real.
Atlas members have helped influence the views of Republican politicians, including George W. Bush. The Arlington, Virginia-based organization — which received more than one million dollars from the oil company ExxonMobil through 2012 and $745,000 from foundations linked to the Koch brothers through 2018, according to watchdog groups — has also exerted significant influence on conservative politics in the U.K. and Latin America.
Bob Neubauer, a researcher with a Canadian oil and gas watchdog organization known as the Corporate Mapping Project, said Atlas includes “a very significant number of the most influential right-wing think tanks and advocacy organizations on the planet.”
“It should make people nervous,” he added.
Atlas and the Macdonald-Laurier Institute have for years been pushing back against attempts by the Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to align Canadian laws with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, or UNDRIP, a declaration Canada endorsed more than a decade ago. That could have codified Indigenous rights to reject pipelines or drilling, the Atlas Network feared, according to their strategy documents, which were shared with Floodlight by an investigative climate research organization called DeSmog.

That’s because the treaty contains clauses affirming Indigenous peoples’ sovereignty over territories they’ve lived on for thousands of years. Implementing it would potentially make it harder for extraction companies to operate on those territories. At stake, the report explains, were Canada’s “monumental reserves of natural gas, hydroelectricity, potash, uranium, oil, and other natural resources.”
In recent years the Atlas Network has deepened its connections to Canada, setting up a Center for U.S. and Canada that “works with local civil society organizations on both sides of the border to create positive perceptions of the role of free enterprise and individual liberty,” according to its website.
The Macdonald-Laurier Institute is one of roughly a dozen Atlas Network partner organizations in Canada. It’s a relatively new organization, formed only in 2010, but its board members and advisors come from some of the top lobbying, legal, and financial firms in the country.
In 2018, the Atlas Network created a 13-page “think tank impact case study” report about a campaign being led by the Macdonald-Laurier Institute called the “Aboriginal Canada and the Natural Resource Economy Project.” Atlas wanted to highlight this project at a training academy for its partners around the world.
The report is no longer accessible on the Atlas Network website but was recovered by DeSmog on an internet archive called the Wayback Machine.
“The Macdonald-Laurier Institute, its staff, and the authors affiliated with the Aboriginal Canada and the Natural Resource Economy project were the only entities that worked on that project,” institute spokesperson Brett Byers wrote in an email.
“Questions regarding the content, nature, or interpretation of a report published by the Atlas Network are better directed toward the Atlas Network,” he added. The Atlas Network didn’t respond to a detailed list of questions about its involvement.
The report claims that this project was started “at the behest of the Assembly of First Nations,” a national advocacy group for Canada’s Indigenous peoples, which “saw potential in the natural resource economy as a major driver of transformation in Indigenous opportunity.” The Assembly didn’t respond to a media request asking if this is accurate.
The Atlas report notes that a prime objective of this collaboration was removing barriers to the production of fossil fuels. It explains that as political momentum began building in 2016 for Canada to implement the U.N. declaration, this “concerned the team” at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute.
That was because the U.N. declaration contains a clause stating that Indigenous peoples have the right to give “Free, Prior, and Informed Consent” before governments make decisions that could have a large material impact on their traditional territories.
Some legal experts see this as a reasonable way to ensure that Indigenous communities are equal partners in decision-making. But the Macdonald-Laurier Institute and the Atlas Network appeared to interpret this to mean that those communities could effectively veto new oil pipelines, fracking operations, and other resource extraction projects.
“It is difficult to overstate the legal and economic disruptions that may have followed from such a step,” the report continued.
The Macdonald-Laurier Institute with the support of Atlas embarked on “a sophisticated communications and outreach strategy to persuade the government, businesses, and Aboriginal communities on the dangers involved with fully adopting UNDRIP,” the report says.
Early success came that November, when then-Canadian minister of justice Jody Wilson-Raybould, who is is a member of the We Wai Kai Nation, “offered her support to [the institute’s] view.” The report was referring to a 2016 speech where she said that fully implementing UNDRIP would be “unworkable,” creating doubt about the government’s commitment.
The Macdonald-Laurier Institute’s “experts are always in regular communication with MPs, ministers, and government officials,” Byers wrote. Wilson-Raybould didn’t respond to a media request.
Meanwhile, an opposition party member introduced a new bill meant to enshrine UNDRIP in law. This effort slowly gained momentum and political support, but when the bill ended up before Canada’s Senate for approval in 2019, a Macdonald-Laurier Institute scholar named Dwight Newman submitted written comments that the legislation’s inclusion of “Free, Prior and Informed Consent” could “have enormous implications for Canada.”
“The bill was ultimately defeated,” Atlas explains on its website.
“There could be some truth to that,” said King, who is Anishinaabe from Beausoleil First Nation. “The bill died in the Senate because Conservative senators delayed and basically filibustered the legislation.” And one of the senators accused of filibustering, Don Plett, quoted at length from a Macdonald-Laurier Institute report during a Senate debate about UNDRIP.
This was seen as a major victory by Atlas, which appears to have provided funding for the campaign. “Atlas Network supported this initiative with a Poverty & Freedom grant,” notes a 2020 document on the Atlas website. That document also identified First Nations allies “working directly” on the campaign, such as the Indian Resource Council and the First Nations Major Projects Coalition.
“That is inaccurate,” wrote a spokesperson for the First Nations Major Projects Coalition, referencing 2018 testimony its vice-chair gave in support of UNDRIP.
When the Trudeau government made yet another attempt to implement the U.N. declaration in 2021, Indian Resource Council president Stephen Buffalo told a standing senate committee that there should be language in the legislation preventing “special-interest groups” from being able to “weaponize” the declaration to block new pipelines.
“Whether or not you support the oil and gas industry, it is the right of the 131 nations of the Indian Resource Council of Canada to develop their resources as they see fit,” he said. The organization didn’t respond to a media request.
The Trudeau government successfully passed a bill starting the implementation of the declaration in June 2021. But it’s been a slow process since then. “There’s very little progress,” King said. “It’s bogged down in administrative morass.”
The Atlas Network appears to be moving into a new phase of advocacy. At a conference in Guatemala earlier this year, leaders “from freedom-minded organizations, many of them Atlas Network partners,” gathered to “sharpen their plans for the coming year.”
At this invitation-only event, Macdonald-Laurier Institute “workshopped a project to improve opportunities for native populations,” according to an Atlas Network write-up of the conference.
Macdonald-Laurier Institute wanted to apply what it has learned in Canada globally. “The goal of the project would be to promote Indigenous economic development across the world,” Byers wrote.

"CHIEF OF POLICE FINED," Cobalt Daily Nugget. November 23, 1912. Page 1. --- For Having Furs in His Possession - - Makes a Statement For the Nugget and Will Appeal The Case ---- C. H. Goodman, chief of New Liskeard, was fined $50.00 for having muskrat skins in his possession out of season; Eli Thibb, of Charitos was fined $100.00 for a similar offence; both pleading guilty, while an infor mation has been laid against a former New Liskeard resident, who at the present time is supposed to be in the Eastern part of the province. This was the result of a secretly court in New Liskeard on Thursday afternoon before Chief Game Inspector Hunter of Toronto and District Game Warden M. Parks, of North Bay. As a result of his appearance in this case, Chief Goodman was asked for his resignation as head of the New Liskeard force, by Councillor MeKnight, chairman of the police committee, and the resignation took effect yesterday morning. Dan McKelvie, of New Liskeard, the local game warden was also present at the trial.
The events leading up to the trial on Thursday really dates back to last May. Game Warden Mekelvie seized furs from Angus Wabi, a North Temiskaming Indian, 300 muskrat pelts being included with other furs. Another well known North Temiskaming resident was implicated but in the trial before Magistrate Hartman in New Liskeard, there was insufficient evidence to convict and the furs were ordered to be confiscated and judgement reserved on the Indian until further evidence was received. In the meantime the furs, it is claimed, were left in the firehall and they disappeared.
The North Temiskaming man after being acquitted of the charge, wrote the department asking that the furs be given back to the Indian and it is alleged that parts of his correspondence were taken up by the department and an investigation was made two months ago and the result was the court proceedings this week, when the two men were charged, pleaded guilty and were fined.
Ex-Chief Goodman will appeal his case, as according to his statement, he is not in any way responsible and he has already taken proceedings to have the fine set aside and himself held cleared of all connection with the matter. The following statement was given out relative to the case by Mr. Goodman to a Nugget representative.
"When the furs were first confiscated," 'stated Mr. Goodman, "I had only been on the New Liskeard force a few days and they were taken to the firehall by Game Warden Dan McKelvie. Some few days afterwards McKelvie, in company with Thibb and Ira Virgin, came to the fire hall at 2.30 in the morning and woke me out of bed and took the trunk conttaining the furs. McKelvie introduced Thibb to me as Game Warden Parks, of North Bay. The furs were bundled up and taken away but in the morning William Madill, who has charge of the firehall and I noticed one bundle on the floor. I notified McKelvie and asked him to take it away. I asked him on different occassions to remove them. When I went on my holidays a month or so afterwards I asked Madill to see that McKelvie took the furs away as we did not want them around the firehall. While I was away the furs evidently were thrown in a trunk and a few days before the inspector came to town two months ago, I noticed they were missing."

Top Indo-Canadian Success Stories: Inspiring Journeys of Arun Garg, Aditya Jha, Nisha Pahuja, Alice Benjamin, and Garry Sangha
Tumblr media
Arun Garg: Medine, Tech, Academia, and Administration
Arun Garg is known as an entrepreneur and tech innovator. He is widely recognized as someone who has played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of the Canadian technology industry. Born in Agra, India, Garg found himself in a strange situation by his 16th birthday, that of being too young to take admission in medical school in India, despite having already completed his master’s in chemistry, one of the youngest to ever achieve that at the University of Agra. Thus, Garg immigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada to pursue higher studies.
By the age of 27, Garg had earned a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Regina, as well as a medical degree from the University of British Columbia. As a pathologist, he served as a medical partner in Dr. C. J. Coady Associates between 1979–2011. He became Medical Director of Lab Medicine and Pathology at Royal Columbian Hospital in 1997 and went to assume the responsibility of regional director post the hospital’s absorption into the Fraser Health region. Garg has also served as the president of the British Columbia Medical Association board, and as a board member of the Canadian Medical Association. As an Indo-Canadian, Garg has been active and indeed quite instrumental in deepening the ties of two of the world’s largest democracies, having served as chair of India Marketing Advisory Group, India Advisory Council for Simon Fraser University. He was also a founder member of Canadian Physicians with Interest in South Asia of BC and Canadian Association of Physicians of Indian Heritage.
Aditya Jha: Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy
Aditya Jha is one of the most accomplished Canadian entrepreneurs currently living. He is also perhaps one of the most creative entrepreneurs in Canada. Jha traces his ancestry to two South Asian nation, having been born to a Nepalese father and an India mother. His journey from a small town in India to the nation’s capital where he was a scholar in the two of the nation’s most well-respected universities would be impressive enough. However, Jha would transcend all barriers and dared to dream on. After completing his undergraduate degree from the University of Delhi, and Masters from Kurukshetra University, Jha went on to become a research scholar at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University. There, he became actively involved in progressive student politics, and led the country’s largest progressive student body as president in two Indian provinces. By 1979, the political scene in India had gone pear shaped, and due to socio-political unrest, the government had suspended civil liberties and imposed an emergency. With student politics outlawed, Jha was forced to go underground and was instrumental in keeping the embers of democracy glowing through underground activities. Around the same time, he got the opportunity to visit Paris, France, for mainframe computer training with CIT Alcatel for six months. A brilliant scholar, he had qualified for India’s University Grants Commission’s Junior and Senior scholarship and Research Associateship from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. And thus, Jha left India. Before immigrating to Canada and starting a career with Bell, Jha worked in Singapore, Australia and Southeast Asian countries.
After a career at Bell, he would go on an entrepreneurial spree, co-founding Isopia, software company, which was acquired by Sun Microsystems for over $100 million, Osellus Inc, another software firm with offices in Toronto and Bangkok, and acquired several businesses including a confectionery from Allan Candy/Cadbury Adams Canada which he renamed Karma. Through his acquisitions, Jha was instrumental in saving more than 150 jobs who were poised to be laid-off. Between 2013–2016, Jha was the CEO of Euclid Infotech. In January 2017, Jha acquired dgMarket International Inc from Development Gateway. dgMarket is the oldest and one of the largest portals for tenders and consulting opportunities globally, with solicitations from national governments and international donor agencies, integrating about 1 million procurement notices per year, covering about $1 trillion tender opportunities. Given what Jha has achieved, he can easily lay claim to being one of top 5 most successful Canadian entrepreneurs ever. Jha is renowned for his philanthropy and is involved in philanthropic activities to promote the interests of first nations in Canada, and the poor in India and Nepal.
Nisha Pahuja: Films and Society
Nisha Pahuja is globally acclaimed filmmaker, having directed Emmy nominated The World Before Her and the Oscar nominated To Kill A Tiger. She has earned praise for her thought-provoking documentaries that delve into complex social issues. Born in New Delhi, Pahuja moved to Canada as a child in the 1970’s. She studied English literature at the University of Toronto, with the aim of making a career in fiction. However, her life changed when she was hired as a researcher for the CBC documentary, Some Kind of Arrangement. Having seen the process of making a documentary up close, Pahuja decided to become a documentary film maker.
The World Before Her was her first major work as an independent film maker. In the documentary, she explored the contradictions that exist in Indian society, where on one hand Bollywood infused glamour encourages a girl to dream of making it in the fashion industry (shown through the eyes of a contestant in the Miss India beauty pageant), and on the other hand the deep rooted traditional values which often took on a violent and militant form (shown through an activist of Durga Vahini, an all-female ultra-right wing conservative organization that opposes beauty pageants as crass commercialization of a woman’s body and antithetical to Indian culture and ethos). Through the film, Pahuja also focuses on the two main characters, their motivations, and dreams. The film, acclaimed globally, released in India around the time of the gruesome Delhi rape case, garnering a lot of attention, and gaining support from renowned film makers like Anurag Kashyap.
Her latest work, “To Kill a Tiger” focuses on an Indian family’s fight to win justice for their daughter who was brutally raped. Shocking and yet inspiring, the film has found support from the likes of Dev Patel, Mindy Kaling, and Rupi Kaur amongst others, who have actively promoted the film. The film has been shortlisted for the Academy Awards, 2024.
Alice Benjamin: Medicine
A recipient of multiple awards, Alice Benjamin is one of Canada’s foremost experts in fetal and maternal medicine. Born in Kerala, India, Benjamin completed her Bachelor of Science from the University of Kerala, before earning a Doctorate of Medicine from the university of Delhi. She did her internship at Lady Harding Medical College and Hospital in Delhi, before immigrating to Canada to complete her residency in ob/gyn at McGill University affiliated Jewish General and Royal Victoria hospitals. This included a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine.
Benjamin has successfully overseen innumerable high-risk pregnancies during her career as a physician. She created history when she performed Canada’s first successful diabetic renal transplant and pregnancy in 1984, and once again in 1998, when she delivered Canada’s first successful interval delivery of twins, where the babies were delivered six weeks apart. In 1994, Benjamin supervised the first peritoneal dialysis pregnancy and delivery in Quebec, and in 2003, its first successful pregnant peritoneal dialysis on cycler. In 2001, Benjamin delivered the first ever infant whose cord blood stem cells were used for a bone-marrow transplant to cure the mother’s leukaemia. Both infant and mother survived and achieved full health.
Benjamin is actively involved in social causes and philanthropy, especially through World Vision and the Salvation Army. Due to her innumerable contributions, she has been feted with numerous honours, including Officer of the Order of Canada, and Knight of the National Order of Quebec. There are also awards that have been created in her honour and are given out annually to deserving students. They are Alice Benjamin Award for Excellence in Obstetrics, Molson Award for Educational Excellence, Dr. Alice Benjamin Leadership Award, and Dr. Alice Benjamin Global Maternal and Child Health Awards.
Garry Sangha: Construction and Philanthropy.
Having covered Indo-Canadian success stories where education played a crucial role, it is only fair that we look at someone who achieved success despite being denied a fair opportunity to pursue higher education. Garry Sangha is today one of the most easily recognizable names in the Indo-Canadian community of the Lower Mainland. Still very much in his mid-40’s, Sangha commands a vast empire in construction, real estate and hospitality, and has done all this from scratch, in less than 25 years from landing in Vancouver as a raw, 17-year-old. Born in a small hamlet in Punjab, Sangha grew up in an agricultural family. He studied at his village school, and after graduating high school took admission in the local Khalsa college, also getting attracted to student activism around this time. In his very first year, Sangha won student body elections and became president of the student union from a progressive platform. Popular, a keen student and soccer player, Sangha could very well have charted a course in Indian politics. However, in 1997, he immigrated to Vancouver with his entire family, forced to drop out from college. In Vancouver, he took admission in the prestigious British Columbia Institute of Technology in the engineering course. However, given his parent’s advanced age and financial pressures, he dropped out yet again to take up work full time as a construction labourer.
Starting out at the very bottom, Sangha quickly climbed the ranks and was soon a supervisor on major construction sites, specializing in drywall. In 2005, less than a decade of landing in Canada, and still in his mid-20’s, Sangha would launch Crystal Consulting Drywall. Today that single company has grown to be a a group of companies that includes CCI Drywall, CCI Waterproofing, CCI Masonry and Kanin Constructions, by its own right one of the most prestigious brands in Canadian construction. Collaboration with IT becomes essential as India’s healthcare sector grows to accommodate an increasing number of patients from abroad. Digital Health Records, analytics for data, telemedicine, and patient management are just a few of the areas where healthcare-IT solutions may simplify the delivery of healthcare.
Effective Patient Assistance:
Patient administration, including arranging appointments, keeping track of medical histories, and managing prescriptions, may be done seamlessly with the implementation of healthcare information systems. This guarantees that healthcare organizations can effectively manage the influx of foreign patients while also improving the patient experience.

Mychael Danna is an Emmy and Oscar-winning film composer known for his evocative blending of orchestral and electronic music with non-Western traditions. His numerous Genie Award-winning scores for filmmaker and longtime partner Atom Egoyan, as well as his Oscar-winning score for Ang Lee's 2012 film Life of Pi, are among his highly acclaimed compositions. Mycheal Danna At the University of Toronto, Danna developed a penchant for communicating difficult concepts in a way that is musically understandable. He was exposed to early music and global music there, which eventually shaped his style. In 1985, Danna won the school's first-ever "Glenn Gould Composition Award" and started composing music for student theatre companies, beginning his collaborative artistic relationship with Egoyan. Since 1987's Family Viewing, Danna has provided the music for all of Egoyan's movies (1987). The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television awarded Danna Genie Awards for his work on the Egoyan movies Ararat (2002), Felicia's Journey (1999), The Sweet Hereafter (1997), and Exotica (1994), as well as for his Oscar-winning score for the movie Water (2005). After working with Ang Lee on the scores for The Ice Storm (1997) and Ride with the Devil, Danna won the 2013 Golden Globe and the 2013 Oscar for his work on Life of Pi (2012). (1999). A church choir sings in Sanskrit, Indian sitars play French melodies, European instruments play South Asian patterns, and a variety of other musical combinations soar alongside a full studio orchestra in Life of Pi (2012)'s complex soundscape, reflecting a very international story. Along with Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) and Tideland (2005), Bennett Miller's Moneyball (2011) and his Oscar-winning drama Capote (2005), Mira Nair's Vanity Fair (2004), Monsoon Wedding (2001), and Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996), and Billy Ray's Breach (2007) and Shattered Glass are other notable collaborations (2003). The Oscar-winning Little Miss Sunshine (2006), for which Danna was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album, Marc Webb's celebrated romantic comedy 500 Days of Summer (2009), and James Mangold's Oscar-winning picture Girl, Interrupted round out Danna's list of accomplishments (1999). According to Danna, his strategy is to "make music an intrinsic element of the storytelling, not just duplicating what is happening onscreen, but adding unexpected dimension and insight that improve the experience of the director's vision. Since his 1978 debut on the Canadian science-fiction musical "Metal Messiah," composer Mychael Danna has been recognised for hundreds of cinema and television themes. He has collaborated with several of the best Hollywood filmmakers and provided the music for various films directed by Atom Egoyan and Ang Lee. For his score to Lee's 2012 film "The Life of Pi," he received the Academy Award and the Golden Globe, in addition to five Genie Awards in his native Canada. For five years, Danna worked as the resident composer at the McLaughlin Planetarium in Toronto (1987–1992). Music for dances has been used in performances such as Dead Souls (Carbone Quatorze Dance Company, 1996; directed by Gilles Maheu), and Gita Govinda (Royal Winnipeg Ballet, 2001; choreographer Nina Menon). Danna received an honorary doctorate from the University of Toronto in June 2014 for his work in the music industry. Since his 1987 feature film debut as a composer for Atom Egoyan's Family Viewing, Danna has been nominated for thirteen Genie Awards. He has received five awards for Original Score Achievement in Music. In the field of film music, Danna is regarded as one of the pioneers of fusing non-Western sound sources with symphonic and electronic minimalism. Because of his notoriety, he has been able to work with filmmakers like Denzel Washington, Atom Egoyan, Deepa Mehta, Terry Gilliam, Scott Hicks, Ang Lee, Gillies MacKinnon, James Mangold, and Mira Nair.
His score for Ang Lee's Life of Pi received nominations for two Academy Awards, including Best Original Song for Pi's Lullaby and Best Original Score. Other movies include Onward by Dan Scanlon, On the Basis of Sex by Mimi Leder, The Breadwinner by Nora Twomey, Capote and Moneyball by Bennett Miller, and (500) Days of Summer by Marc Webb. The Academy Award for Best Original Score went to Mychael Danna, the score composer for Life of Pi. The Canadian composer triumphed over John Williams, Thomas Newman, Dario Marianelli, and Alexandre Desplat in a battle of composers. Different Interviews Regarding his Work: The honour follows Danna's earlier Golden Globe triumph in the same category. Earlier in February, Thomas Newman's soundtrack for Skyfall won the BAFTA for best soundtrack, but he was unable to duplicate the feat at the Oscars. Tale won three Golden Globes—often regarded as a forerunner to the Academy Awards—in the following categories: Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Actor (Musical or Comedy, for Hugh Jackman), and Best Supporting Actress (musical or comedy, for Anne Hathaway) After collecting nominations for the music and the song "Pi's Melody" from the movie on Thursday, Mychael Danna's score for Ang Lee's Life of Pi won the award. Director Ang Lee and his parents were acknowledged by Canadian composer Danna for "the gift of music that you gave me." I felt very, very lucky to be a part of the entire Life of Pi experience, and I speak for the entire cast and crew, even before this, he continued. Ang Lee's film adaption of Yann Martel's book Life Of Pi is unquestionably one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year. Critics have already hailed it as a visual masterpiece for telling the strange tale of a youngster who is trapped in a lifeboat with just a tiger for company. However, Mychael Danna, the composer, wonders how on earth one goes about writing music for a movie like this. Danna talked to Classic FM's Lucy Coward about the process of writing the movie's score (for which he has since gotten a coveted Golden Globe nomination), how some of the music was inspired by his upbringing, and why staying in his compositional bubble for four months worked so well. In regards to the movie itself, Danna says: "Working on this project is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and in a way, my entire career has brought me to this picture." It's difficult to disagree when praise is pouring in and expectations for the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards are high.

India-Canada Political Ties Create Mayhem for Startups
Tumblr media
The recent India-Canada diplomatic strain has affected startups severely. The diplomatic tensions may become a source of worry for Indian entrepreneurs who vouch for Canada as a gateway to North American markets.
Canada plays a prominent role when it comes to trading and entrepreneurship. Canadian start-up visa provides access for Indian startups to pave their way to the North American markets. It helps immigrant entrepreneurs in taking their business to a global level.
The Canadian start-up visa provided enticing incentives for entrepreneurs. Due to the suspension of visas, businesses have started exploring alternative potential markets around the United States.
The India-Canada Rift
The ties between both countries are strained due to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statement that suggested that there was Indian involvement in the assassination of a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist leader. Both the countries expelled a diplomat in retaliation amidst which India denied the allegations. The conflict majorly revolves around the Khalistan movement which was previously banned in India.
What is a Canada Startup Visa?
Tumblr media
Canada’s Startup Visa allows any foreign entrepreneur to obtain permanent residence in Canada through business immigration. Enterprising owners of startups or established foreign companies may be able to use this program to permanently relocate to Canada along with other founding partners (up to 5 partners), provided that they meet other requirements.
Tumblr media
Canada Startup Visa Numbers
Entrepreneurs made less use of the Startup Visa (SUV) in the first quarter of this year than they did for the same period last year. Even though there was an upward trend in immigration to Canada, there was a downfall in the number of SUVs used by the permanent residents of the country. It was down by 6.25%, slipping from 160 in the first quarter of 2022 to 150 this year.
The monthly number of new arrivals through the immigration program dropped to 40 after starting with 50 new immigrant entrepreneurs through the SUV in January.
Tumblr media
Indian Startups in Canada
Canadian accelerator and incubator Toronto Business Development Centre (TBDC) has announced plans to help Indian startups and micro, small, and medium-sized businesses to globalize their companies.
Tumblr media
On average, 96,000 new startups are formed in the Canadian economy per year
TBDC predominantly offers a six-month-long incubation program for startups in three distinct phases. In the first phase, they provide a three-month pre-arrival virtual training to Indian startups and entrepreneurs giving them a comprehensive understanding of the Canadian business market.
Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) has made investments in several Indian start-ups including Delhivery, Flipkart, Paytm, and Byju’s. According to Tracxn data, CPPIB has a 3.6% stake with a cumulative investment of Rs 292 crore in Acko. In Byju's, it has a 3.4% stake with cumulative investments of Rs 1,456 crore. In Flipkart, its cumulative investments stood at Rs 6,663.50 crore.
The political turmoil between the two nations should hopefully be resolved soon. If not then it will continue to have an adverse affect on the startup funding.

Indian Students Facing Deportation from Canada due to Fake Admission Offer Letters
Recently, we all have heard the news that more than 700 Indian students are facing deportation from Canada after discovering that their educational institution’s admission offer letters were fake as a result the students were unable to enroll in their chosen programs. Students came across this fraud when they applied for permanent residency in Canada. The Canadian Border Service Agency (CBSA) examined the documents on the basis of which their visas were issued and discovered that these letters were fake. Now, they are facing deportation from Canada and are struggling to recover their lost money.
The majority of the students arrived in Canada to attend college in 2018 and 2019. Many of them had also already finished their education, obtained work authorizations, and accumulated experience in Canada. The students filed for study visas through Education Migration Services, which is Canada study visa consultant in Jalandhar, according to the Toronto Star. Brijesh Mishra, the director of the consulting company, charged students thousands of dollars to cover the fees of completing their college and visa applications as well as tuition.
The Problem of Fake Admission Offer Letters
The problem of fake admission offer letters is not new, but it has become more widespread in recent years. Students from India and other countries are often targeted by unscrupulous agents who promise them admission to Canadian colleges and universities in exchange for large sums of money. These agents use fake admission offer letters to convince students to pay, but the letters are often not recognized by the institutions in question. Unfortunately, some Canada study visa agent attracts students seeking to study and work in Canada in order to gain a chance at permanent residency and gain their trust on false promises. Some of these agents accept payment in cash, do not sign a contract, and are not licensed. Sometimes, the Indian students become a victim of what is known as a "ghost consultant." Ghost consultants are individuals posing as representatives from educational institutions or unregistered immigration agents. They provide services to students in exchange for a fee and, after receiving payment, they "ghost" the victim by disappearing. People who are applying for work permits, study permits, or permanent resident status may come in contact with this kind of fraud.
The Consequences of Fake Admission Offer Letters
Students who fall victim to fake admission offer letters face a number of consequences. They are often unable to enroll in their chosen programs, despite having paid large sums of money. They may also face deportation from Canada, as their study permits are tied to their enrollment in a recognized institution. Additionally, they may be unable to recover their lost money, as the Canada study visa agents who took their money are often difficult to track down.
What Can Be Done?
The only individuals legally permitted to provide immigration advice and services for a fee should be licensed lawyers and consultants registered with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultant (CICC). Additionally, all Canada visa and immigration consultant must hold a CICC license. To prevent the problem of fake admission offer letters, it is important for students to be cautious when dealing with agents. They should research the institutions they are interested in and verify that the admission offer letters they receive are legitimate. Additionally, they should avoid dealing with agents who demand large sums of money upfront, as this is often a sign of a scam. For students who have already fallen victim to fake admission offer letters, there are a few options. They can seek legal assistance to challenge their deportation orders and recover their lost money. They can also report the agents who scammed them to the authorities, in the hopes of preventing others from facing the same fate.

Brú Finance: NFTs backed by Commodities — A Global First
Tumblr media
Mar 01, 2022
Brú Finance
Many Web3 organizations have been trying to adopt and bring real world assets on-chain since 2017–18. But success has been far and few.
We, at Brú Finance, realized that digitization of the existing paper documents is not an appropriate way of tokenization. The tokenization of the real world assets should take place either at source or under a custody of a decentralized third party.
Significance of NFTs backed by RWAs
The tokenization could be done either at the time of the issuance by the issuer. We can take the example of gold. Miners should do the process of tokenization and create tokens for the gold produced at the mine. Tokens could be created in the form of the gold bars and authenticated using some unique number printed on the bars which cannot be altered. The entire journey of the gold bar could be captured.
Another point of tokenization is possible when the assets are in the possession of the custodians. Tokenization of the real world assets can solve the existing problems like ownership, IP records, duplicacy of the tokens, etc.
To solve the above-mentioned problems, Brú Finance has adopted the tokenization of real-world assets like agri-commodities when they are in the custody of a warehouse. We have onboarded more than 1400 custodian warehouses in India and the number is growing continuously. We create tokens in the form of NFTs when the goods are stored in the custody of the warehouses. These NFTs are then used to provide collateral to lenders for borrowing against commodity NFTs.
As the tokens created by Brú Finance are backed with real world assets stored with custodians, they are more reliable in terms of quality/quantity and are free from volatility risk. This makes them excellent collateral for financing.
How does Brú Finance convert RWA to NFTs?
We are focused on commodities and commodities finance. The farmers and other supply chain players like traders, processing mills etc. deposit their agri-commodities like rice, wheat, sugar, etc. in the warehouses.
The third party decentralized verification agencies record and audit the information like quality and quantity of the goods stored in the warehouse. This data is recorded on our Blockchain protocol. On a daily basis, all the stakeholders can determine the most accurate last traded price on regional and national exchanges and markets. This price information is used for issuance of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) against the warehouse receipts (WHRs).
For lending, our partners use these commodities as collateral for loans. In this way, Brú Finance is connecting real economy with decentralized world using the NFTs supported by RWAs.
Brú Finance Journey
Since launching the platform in early 2020, we have already tokenized assets worth more than $500 million. We are the largest blockchain fintech company using the RWA as collateral for NFTs. Using these NFTs, the platform provides loans to Indian farmers, thus creating a social impact. We have witnessed the rise in the income level by 30 to 40% of the Indian farmers. 85% of these farmer borrowers have land holding less than 4 acres thereby creating grassroot social impact.
Efforts of Brú Finance are recognized and supported by Indian government entities, banks, non-bank organizations, thousands of platform users, and prestigious institutions like MAssChallenge, UNDP’s SDGia, ETHDenver, Microsoft, University of Toronto’s CDL, etc.
In India’s most prestigious business school IIM-Ahmedabad, our success story in social impact finance to Indian’s farmers using Blockchain is being taught.
We have won accolades across the globe from organizations like Indian Bank’s association, DCB bank, Polygon, Indian Merchant’s Chamber for innovative usage of blockchain technology in facilitating lending against commodities backed by NFTs.

Maria Qamar - HateCopy
Maria Qamar, also known as HateCopy, is an Indian Toronto-based artist who creates paintings that relate to the South Asian diaspora. Her pop art style is inspired by Roy Lichtenstein. Her work depicts the stereotypical aunty usually accompanied by a phase that pokes fun at her culture. She chose these characters because in India the term aunty is used as a “sexist disparaging term to dismiss women above a certain age.”(Gill,2016) pop art typically represents women in a glamourised fashion with their faces being the focal point in the compositions. By using the pop art style she is subverting how these women are typically viewed.
Her work is very humorous. I think that her target audience is specifically from her diaspora or similar to one similar to her. This is what makes it so engaging for me. The large canvases covered in bright colours and thick black outline captures the viewers attention and the funny speech engages the viewer so that it feels like an inside joke, especially for those who live in predominantly white areas because they may not have another place to share these types of jokes.
I think that although they may not be her target audience, western audiences can also relate to these characters more than the ones they may see in western movies that portray indians like in Bend it Like Beckham. This is because she did not build her work around “ easily recognisable touchstone tropes” (Ruthnum, 2017) that were created by western media to portray indians. She just overexaggerated real people from her life.
For my work, I also want it to connect to those of my specific diaspora but I also want it to be able to connect with other diasporas and cultures. Qamar started off as being an instagram artist before she started to present her work in galleries and this is why she liked to use the bright colours, but for my work I want to really focus on the details of my prints and make a composition where the viewer’s eyes travels around the piece, creating fluidity and representing diasporic aspects that I have observed in other works.
