She Who Became the Sun illustrations by Przemysław "Trust" Truściński
Okay I did some digging around and managed to find an ebook version of the illustrated Polish edition (Ta, która stała się słońcem) of She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan!! I got my copy from swiatksiazki.pl with the help of automatic translation.
Here are the illustrations I thought would be the most interesting to show here.
Chapters 1–4, Zhu at the monastery
Chapter 7, Ouyang
Chapter 10 - Ouyang and Esen
Chapter 16 - Zhu and Ma’s wedding
Chapter 19 - Zhu and Ma figuring out the business of rain and clouds
Had to censor this one OTL
Chapter 22 - Esen and Ouyang
Chapter 23, Zhu at the end of the book

LOVE IS SAND ITS SAND ITS ALL BEEN SAND LOVE IS FUCKING SAND
Anyone remember this? From chapter 42?
This was following his conversation with Chris the day he started going out with Mitsumi. He can’t get a grasp on his feelings.
Love is.. slipping away.. out of reach.. not seen often (he’s only been to the beach once b4). We know that Shima has struggled to have his feelings acknowledged growing up, and this metaphor encapsulates it well.
Then we have chapter 53
Mika walks up to Shima (who she has previously confessed to and since moved on), with a half complaint of ‘its actually kind of hard isn’t it? To walk on the sand’
To tread your feelings is hard. It’s hard work.. to love… to be loved.
But it’s not really a lament, it’s more of an affirmation. All their friends wanted to walk along that beach- together. And it’s ultimately worth it, even if it isn’t as easy as expected.
Then in comes Mitsumi… she doesn’t know the context of their conversation but she hears them query about something in the sand, that they don’t recognise.
She says there is life here. We can find it if we dig. It would’ve been nice to try sooner.
She’s so accustomed to love, she grew up with it from all her family and friends, and here she is showing her friends its got so much there if only you look, if only you have a hand. I can help.
Then Shima asks her to show him that life that’s there.
Love. Is. Sand.

it feels like a lot of people look at him and go ‘teehee my fav who’s committed war crimes!! <3’ but. only want to appreciate him as the archetype of ‘vaguely problematic fav’ and not actually engage with the specific things he’s done. i woke up like 5 seconds ago so maybe that’s not worded perfectly but that’s the vibes i get if that makes sense
no dont worry i get what you mean, that is kind of the vibe. and to be fair i feel like the cast kind of ended up doing that later on too, like after that plot was done the reaction is Aw he's such a problematic little baby hotboi (typing that feels like when adults call a dog a doggo i hate to say it but it pains me) lets draw him as a chibi eating soup. like no he was able to get away with what he did (giving away the beacons, working With ikithon and ludinus and igniting a war that destroyed sm peoples lives), frame another innocent man for it who ended up tortured and given to the empire as a prisoner too, lied to all of tmn about it to their faces, putting them in danger by asking them to retrieve the beacons for him when he knew where they were and who had them. . he got away with this (in the plot, to the cast and fandom) because he's a young, attractive, extremely wealthy, privileged and politically powerful man. like ?
