#im not saying either of these dynamics are inherently better or worse than the other
no but in regards to that other post, i really am in love with the hc of the two ways bowser and mario express their attachment to luigi, regarding his safety
Where while mario is overprotective, something born of like a lifelong anxiety over his little brother—
Bowser goes through a couple stages. Where at first he believes luigi is weak and defenseless, a belief born from always seeing mario on the frontlines.
But ofc as he gets to know luigi, he eventually sees that luigi is the opposite. That he isn't inherently weak for allowing himself to be vulnerable. That he is fiercest when it comes to standing up for the things and people he believes in (a ferocity he's exhibited on bowser's behalf, most notably)
And so bowser eventually becomes self assured when it comes to luigi, and luigi's ability to handle himself. (One of his few (but major) motivations for keeping an eye out for luigi is his own desire to not make luigi constantly fend for himself, even if bowser knows he can.)
But another reason bowser's so self assured, is because he has /unwavering/ faith in the /fact/—the FACT—that /no one/ will mess with what's his. And bowser ensures this by making it /very known/ that luigi is, /unsparingly/, his.
And i just think thats hot 💀😭😭😭😭

hullo! I read your chapter of your au with the Very Horrible Lex and the Very Baby Kon and the Very Sad Clark and i love it sosososo much! The GOOD ANGST my dood.
I want you to know i’ve been daydreaming abt it. Heck, i was daydreaming WHILE reading it- i mean that’s actually normal for me when i’m invested in smthn, but fr i kept getting distracted by So Many Thoughts and Feelings tm. Took me longer to read than it should’ve but rest assured that’s a positive thing!
i read the fic you based it on, and it was great! But so far im liking yours better >v>
I wanna see the rescue and the recovery! I wanna see it get worse first! I wanna see Clark attempt to raise Kon the best he can in the worst of circumstances! The love and human connection thriving even in the midst of a hurricane of cruelty— it’s so good bestie!
uhh anyway! The point of this ask: I wanna know, how did you come up with the title? “We shall be free; we shall find peace”? oVo?
Thank you!! That's basically how it came about, daydreaming about the fic that inspired it!
So I really love the fanfic tradition of using lowercase AestheticTM song lyrics as titles. Fic is already inherently intertextual, and I think it's fun to add another layer of intertextuality onto that; I named one of my other fics with a lyric mostly because 1. the lyric fits their relationship! and 2. the juxtaposition between Wholesome Radio Pop Lyric and soft d/s xeno tentacle pwp still makes me laugh.
At first the draft was just called 'horrible lex au,' and then I thought about using two other quotes before settling on the title. That's the tl;dr of it all, the rest of this is under a cut for plot spoilers for the overall arc of the entire fic, and also so, so much rambling:
The first title I was thinking about was be sure your heart is brave from Aeschylus' Agamemnon, but that quote is the chorus speaking to Cassandra right before she's about to be killed; her bravery is a heavy burden reaction to the monstrous injustices that have brought her to that point, like Clark and Kon... but then she's brutally murdered. Plus the power dynamic situation is... let's say, very different. It's an extraordinary, immortal line but the narrative arc I've got planned strays too far from the original arc, and in the end I decided I didn't want the shadow of a way better tragedy hanging over my little fanfic.
Chorus: Woman, be sure your heart is brave; you can take much. Cassandra: None but the unhappy ever hear such praise.
The next line I was thinking about went too far in the other direction, taste a morning out there, which is from one of the best 'I Want' songs, Out There from the Disney Hunchback of Notre Dame. Quasimodo's story of being thought monstrous and being imprisoned and gaslit by a socially powerful manipulator parallels Clark and Kon better than Cassandra's, but in the end the literal line itself doesn't fit right with either Clark or Kon. Clark, at the beginning of the fic, has atrophied to the point where he can only conceive wanting for such things through wanting them for Kon, and Kon, as we'll see soonish, isn't locked up underground the way Clark is. Plus, the fic is... lighter than the Orestia for sure but a hell of a lot grimmer than Disney, lol. I do have it on my writing playlist though.
So in the end I went back to one of my absolute favorite pieces of media ever, Fidelio. We shall be free; we shall find peace is a line from the Prisoner's Chorus in that opera. The solo prisoner that sings the line invites the rest of the prisoners to begin hoping, and from there, despite the sobering reminders of the dangers they face, that they're being watched, the music swells into a yearning for freedom so powerful it's difficult to understand how it passed the censors in 1805.
First solo: Hope whispers softly to me: We shall be free, we shall find peace. Chorus: Oh Heavens! Salvation! What happiness! Oh freedom, freedom, will you return? Second solo: Speak softly! Be on your guard! [The jailer's] eyes and ears are on us.
And then - the head jailer returns, and the prisoners are brought back to reality, forced back into their dark cells at the end of the act. The temporary respite is over.
Farewell, warm sunshine - how quickly you fly from us. Night is fallen upon us, from which no day shall break.
The simple act of hoping is like a breath of fresh air, temporarily alleviating their suffering, but it doesn't materially change their circumstances; it takes a number of outside forces to do that, which will be paralleled in the fic. Love and hope is all they have, and it's not enough, but it does make the torment bearable until Bruce/Leonora uncovers the extent of The Horrors and Diana/Don Fernando can deus ex machina everyone into the sunlight.
All in all, the line is a very succinct summary of the plot. Clark and Kon will be free, and they will find peace, but they have to find out what both of those mean, reclaiming their agency in the process.
oooor at least that's the plan. chapter 2 is about 90% edited and can probably be ready this weekend, I hit a little plot snag in chapter 3-5 so chunks of that are undergoing rewrites, but the good news there is that the rewrites are SO much better than the original draft and there will be some bats showing up earlier than there otherwise would have been. I did uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh kind of lose my job a few days after posting the first part, so updates will be slower than I'd like, especially since I'll have to move to a different state if I get the positions I'm currently applying to 😓

Hi! Im trying to decide which remake to watch next. I have seen the og, france (i have to say besides season 3 it was super bad) and druck. Which remake is the best in terms of representation, like how would u rank them? (I trust u wont recommend italia lol)
This is an interesting question because I’m not sure that the remakes with the “best representation” are the ones that I personally find the most enjoyable to watch? (I’m also going to assume that when you say “best in terms of representation,” you mean the most ethnoracially diverse just in terms of casting?)
So instead of doing a ranking, here’s an outline of the ethnoracial representation of each one and my brief opinion on how each show works in terms of representation:
Skam España
Season 1: Eva (Eva) / Season 2: Cris (Chris & Isak)
España is one of the least diverse remakes in terms of ethnoracial identity, there’s no denying that. Although they have a few Latin American actors on the show, there are only two characters that aren’t white (or white-passing).
However, España is my favorite remake. Season one is pretty solid and I found myself interested in all of the characters and their personalities. Season two is absolutely spectacular, and while I have a few complaints, I cannot praise it enough. They gave Isak’s storyline to their Chris Berg (Cris) character, so it’s a wlw storyline.
One of the best parts of it is how  they treat their Sana (Amira). Imo España puts in way more care and effort into Amira than any of the other Skams do, including the OG. The Girl Squad actually seems to care about Amira’s religion and they make the effort to educate themselves, and Cris especially works to make Amira feel like she belongs. That’s not in spite of her differences, either, the show acknowledges how difference affects people and why it’s also a source of pride and important to a sense of self-hood. It’s the first Skam show, tbqh, where I’m not scared for the Sana season.
Most of the racism/Islamophobia Amira experiences is from outsiders commenting on Amira and through Cris’s mom. Their Vilde (Viri) is definitely sheltered and shows prejudice on a number of occasions in S1 but seems to be the one who lets go of those biases the most out of all the Vildes. Otherwise a lot of the prejudice is misogyny, homophobia/biphobia and ableism (which relates to the themes in Eva’s and Cris’s season).
Overall, I would describe España as tender.
Skam Austin
Season 1: Megan (Eva) / Season 2: Grace (Noora)
I think Austin the most ethnoracially diverse of the Skam shows. 3/5 members of the Girl Squad are WoC, and their Isak is a Black lesbian. (Yay!!!!!!)
Season one was fun but felt a bit rushed in some places. Season two started out pretty badly in terms of dialogue and characterization, but I did think it picked up well towards the middle of the season. I think it really hit its stride in the last few episodes!
All of the characters of color are fun, lovable, and get more complex characterization by the end of S2. What I do dislike about Austin is that they seem to love putting their characters of color in painful situations with very little resolution or support from other characters. I’m not sure how to get into this without spoiling things, but I was not happy with their Sana’s (Zoya), Eva’s, (Megan), Chris’s (Josefina) or Isak’s (Shay) storylines or how they wrapped up. However, when given complex dialogue and scenes, these actresses really pull out all the stops.
There’s not too much racism/Islamophobia in season 1 besides the patent Vilde-to-Sana (Kelsey to Zoya) prejudice. Megan is actually Latina but I don’t remember that really being brought up at all. I love Josefina but at points I feel like she was also just supposed to be the comic relief as well. Season 2, imo, had a LOT of racism/islamophobia, mostly directed at Zoya but a few microaggressions against the other girls as well. Kelsey seems to grow and isn’t blatantly racist/islamophobic but is still cringe-y/funny in that white-woman-who’s-trying-too-hard kind of way. Other forms of prejudice are misogyny and lesophobia (season 2 is also the Noora season, so content note for sexual assault).
Overall, I would describe Austin as campy.
Skam Netherlands
Season 1: Isa (Eva) / Season 2: Liv (Noora)
Netherlands is extremely ethnoracially diverse as well. They’re also the first remake to give us a WoC!Noora and a MoC!William.
Season one is probably my favorite season one (besides the OG). They built on so much of the wonderful aspects of the OG and went a step further, imo. Season two started out so well, but then it began to teeter off towards the end. It felt very rushed by then and some of the changes they made to the characters didn’t affect the plot at all, which was disappointing and almost nonsensical to watch. The show is very aesthetically pleasing though and I love most of the characters because they’re so... emotionally messy. lol.
Overall, their characters of color are quirky and nuanced. They’re also treated pretty well by the narrative. However... I think the show tends to not acknowledge their ethnoracial identities at all. Overall, it gives me the impression that the show did “colorblind” casting and then just either didn’t want to or forgot to engage with ethnoracial identity on any kind of level (sort of like Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella or Still Star Crossed). This… is not necessarily a bad thing? But it annoys me because I personally think that stories inherently change when you cast marginalized actors. The exceptions to this are their Sana character (Imaan, who is only in season one) and their new Sana/Linn hybrid character (Esra who is in season two).
Again, because the show doesn’t really engage with ethnoracial identity, there’s not much racism/Islamophobia besides the Vilde-to-Sana stuff (Engel to Imaan). Engel is also painted as a cutesy, just doesn’t know any better kind of ignorant and not purposefully racist like many of the other Vildes. In season two, her interactions with Esra have a different tone like she’s genuinely curious, which can still be couched in prejudice. To me though, the dynamic is different because Esra is so much older than she is, so the power is more balanced. The show mostly deals with misogyny but not in a racialized way with Liv, which I found disappointing as well. Again, season 2 is also the Noora season, so content note for sexual assault.
Overall, I would describe Netherlands as surrealist (Also, from what I’ve seen, a lot of people who like Druck really like Skamnl too).
WTFock
Season 1: Janna (Eva) / Season 2: Zoe (Noora)
WTFock is in the middle when it comes to ethnoracial diversity.
Season one starts out slowly, but the small changes they make to the plot make a lot of sense and I really quite liked. It’s underrated but I think some of the characters are extremely strong, and for some reason it gives me the most OG vibe. Their Noora (Zoe) and Sana (Yasmina) are some of my favorites. I haven’t watched season two fully yet, maybe five-six clips. I did like the ones I selectively watched because it seems like they did change things up in a way that actually impacts the storyline (unlike in other remakes, who do small changes but ultimately stick to the exact plot of the OG).
I adore Yasmina and have no strong feelings about the rest of their characters of color so far. Their Chris (Luca) isn’t as strong as some of her counterparts, imo, but I think there’s potential to really build her up. I will say though that their one MoC, Moyo (a Mahdi/Magnus?) is arguably also the worse. He’s obsessed with saying fa**ot and is pretty homophobic. I have a suspicion that WTfock is gonna pull out some antiblackness the same way Skamfr did but again, I haven’t watched most of season 2 so I feel like I can’t really say that for sure yet. The show is good so far at hinting at Yasmina’s backstory, which I also really like. I feel like Wtfock and España have been the best at giving their Sanas a life outside of their friends, where we get more about then in early seasons then we did with Sana.
Yasmina deals with a lot of racism/Islamophobia from her Vilde (Amber). Imo, Amber is the fucking worst, and I don’t know how anyone can tolerate her. She’s even worse than Kiki which is saying a lot because I really really loathe Kiki. But anyway. Season one also has a “Mexican” themed party which was atrocious to watch, and not one of the characters seems to think that’s racist at all. The show tackles with misogyny as well, and season 2 is also the Noora season, so content note for sexual assault. I’m not 100% certain because again, I haven’t watched it, but apparently a bunch of characters, not only Moyo, have also been really gross, fetishizing and homophobic towards Robbe.
Overall, I thought season one was solid. I can’t really comment on the show as a whole yet.
In Conclusion
Anyway!
I hope this was helpful, but what you’re going to like really depends on you. This is all my opinion and ofc folks are free to disagree with me. I might be missing a lot because I wrote this all off of memory, but these are the impressions that stuck with me the most.

Ok just for clarity im gonna compare how SU and ATLA are treated by this website, obviously this isn’t a one-size-fits-all since I’ve seen someone say “why do the creators of LOK hate brown women so much” but I digress:
ATLA: ATLA is often praised as a perfect, amazing, near-flawless show.  However, there are people who have legitimate complaints with it.  Many people dislike how Ozai’s defeat was handled and others still have problems with the het couples in the show, among other things.  The Fire Nation is generally compared to nazi germany to a certain extent, in that Ozai is a hitler-like figure and many fire nation civilians don’t know the truth, HOWEVER, they are still to blame/the enemy even if they’re good people deep down.  Either way, most people say that this show is pretty good, with people pointing out various flaws here and there.
SU: The diamonds are not perfectly comparable to Ozai in that the diamonds have very emotion-driven motivations (with the exception of White) while Ozai has always just been Bad.  Having said that, having emotions doesn’t immediately redeem you.  We learn more about Ozai and his motivations for why he does the things he does in the ATLA graphic novels, but that doesn’t condone or redeem him.  The Diamonds, thus far, have shown no signs of being redeemed; Steven is just working with them because it was basically “reveal you’re pink diamond or die” so he chose to reveal himself and now they won’t leave him alone, so he decided hey, maybe he should use that to fix some shit?  Basically Steven is using them, but obviously that’s not to say he’s doing anything wrong to the diamonds or anything.  I mean, they’re slave owners.
There is most certainly a difference between many things in SU and many things in ATLA.  For example, ATLA’s “morally gray” character isn’t exactly like Pink Diamond.  Zuko doesn’t fit the bill at all and the only closest character I can think of is Iroh.  Iroh I think is an okay comparison, especially when you consider that he didn’t step down from the Fire Nation until his son died, and then he pledged himself to try and keep balance in the world.  You could even argue that him leaving the army prevented him from becoming fire lord, which in turn would’ve let him save more people - just like if Pink stayed Pink instead of turning into Rose.  However Rose’s role as Pink Diamond is a bit more complex than Iroh’s when you consider Pearl and the extent of Rose’s powers.  In my eyes, I think it’s obvious that Rose and Pearl had a toxic dynamic, even if Rose didn’t mean to be abusive.  Pearl’s behavior feels very in-line with a trauma/abuse victim to me; a lot of that behavior WAS over Rose, but the reveal paints it in a whole new light imo.  Additionally, we don’t know how much Rose could’ve done if she stayed Pink, and/or how many people she could’ve saved from the blast if she wasn’t most focused on Garnet and Pearl.  Iroh had nothing like that; Zuko was in a very similar situation of being semi-disowned from his family for being “too soft” and Iroh was only ever a positive influence on Zuko’s life.  Iroh didn’t really have power over Zuko (not any more than a weird uncle normally has over their emo nephew anyways) and their relationship couldn’t become toxic because of that.  No one was inherently on a plane above the other besides seniority.  Pearl was programmed to always listen to Rose; Zuko basically never listened to Iroh but also they’re both humans so that would be weird if it was the case.
Ergo, there is certainly something more worth critiquing in SU over ATLA’s story.  I for one found ATLA’s handling of Aang’s pacifism pretty good overall, since it was presented (in my eyes) as HIS choice, HIM being SELFISH.  I can’t really tell you which direction SU is leaning in, however I think the worse thing you can say (accurately) atm is that the tone/message is muddled/confused.  That’s an opinion, and a fair one to have.  Like you can say it’s nazi apologism but maybe think for like 2 seconds considering 1. the show has done nothing except have three-dimensional villains that the hero is only “friends” with because he wants something from them and 2. the creator is literally jewish (white, but jewish)
None of this is to say either show is perfect, that you can’t critique SU, ect.  If you think the show is heading down a dangerous path, say it!  If you have problems with smaller things like potential racial stereotypes peaking through, critique it and say what a better personality would be!  If you have problems with lgbt stereotypes, well maybe shut your face because Rebecca is a bisexual nonbinary woman but you can still give constructive criticism, just be nice since she’s literally a trans wlw!  Be! constructive!  Be! normal!  It’s normal to have gripes with a kids show, especially one as gutsy as SU!  You can have an opinion without acting like finding a few things here and there makes everyone involved with and who likes SU a shitty person!
