Hello, beautiful girl, Cosmo, and the awesome people of the 'gram! ... Today I thought I'd share a little bit about how our horses live all Winter. Many of you know they all live outside -- with the exception of our two old studs, and sometimes Avie (just because he's my special Diva) -- and those three only get to come in if the weather is going to be *really* bad. ... Equine Winter coats grow in based on the amount of daylight the horse gets -- so as the days get shorter the horse grows more hair. ... Did you know that a horse can loft their coat, up or down as needed to stay warm? That is, assuming we let them grow a full winter coat! Horses that live in the North, with even shorter days, tend to produce more melatonin, which allows for the coat to grown in longer and thicker than a horse that's kept in a warmer, Winter environment such as say, Texas. Lofting is essentially the individual hairs in the Winter coat "springing" up as it gets colder. This creates air pockets that provide extra insulation! Basically it keeps the horse’s natural body heat from escaping. It's the same for us when we wear a winter jacket. It's not the jacket itself that adds the warmth to us -- it's how much body heat the jacket keeps from escaping that keeps us warm! ... If the horse gets rained or snowed on, that can diminish their "lofting" capability. But when you see horses with snow on their back -- that snow actually acts as an insulator and helps them stay warm too! ... So, next time you see a horse standing in the snow eating hay, don't worry, he's likely not cold and is probably enjoying his time outside. ... Do you blanket your horses in the Winter?
